    Breath of the Wild was the first appearance of a living Ganon in over ten years. And we're still counting since the last time we've seen Ganondorf. They released five games back to back that had no trace of Ganon, except his corpse in A Link Between Worlds. They're not using him too much. In fact they're barely using him at all. A few games without Ganon would not be unprecedented at all. He's featured in less than half (8/18) of them as it stands. And human form Ganondorf is only in three!

    • @tepes6563
      @tepes6563 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's likely the idea of Ganon that he's grown tired of rather than the execution. While Ganon (and to a much lesser extent Ganondorf) have been in less games than people think, he has been mentioned/affected the story enough for it to get tiring.

    • @Jotari
      @Jotari 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Of those games there's only a single one in which he affects the plot without being featured (A Link Between Worlds). He appears on the Game over screen of Zelda II and as a phase of the final boss in Link's Awakening, but neither of those are story influencing. They're basically cameos. Unless Arlo is suggesting they abandon the character and never utilize him again ever, then his wish has already been granted. Ganon was dropped from main series Zelda for a literal decade.

    • @tepes6563
      @tepes6563 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Jotari True, but I agree with him to a degree. I'm by no means really tired of Ganondorf, but it'd be so cool to see demise officially use another vessel (even if it's for only one game) or see another kingdom entirely, though I know it's not likely any time soon.

    • @Jotari
      @Jotari 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      We saw another kingdom just a two games ago in Hytopia and the Drablands. What people really want is to see the major console releases of Zelda (ie the 3D games) do something different. The series has been straying from Ganondorf, Hyrule and the Triforce ever since 1993, it's just they play it safe when it comes to the big budget titles. Majora's Mask is the only instances of a major 3D game that abandoned these common elements (and even then that game's budget was probably pretty small given how much they reused). I'm not saying I wouldn't want to see the Zelda series do more experimental stuff, but to say that it doesn't is ignoring more than every second game.

  • @williambarnes5023
    @williambarnes5023 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    I feel like this would be pretty amazing - Demise is dead now after Zelda spent all her Hylia power nuking him. The curse is broken. Gannondorf is no longer a puppet of Demise. Gannondorf is AWARE OF having been a puppet of Demise. Gannondorf is PISSED OFF about all his reincarnations having been puppets of Demise, AND HIS PEOPLE suffering as a result of Demise's actions. And so... he makes peace with Hyrule. He, Link, and Zelda resolve their differences, even though they don't LIKE each other they put it aside. To fight a new threatening challenge. At first it seems like Gannondorf is going to be the enemy again. But then he just lurks and carefully approaches, not doing anything bad. He's wary about this contact, and reluctant, and still a little spiteful. But he has to get over it and isn't going to let whatever resentment he still has get in the way of his people's needs. And maybe he has some legitimate grievance to air against Hyrule to explain his motivations for actions he's been demonized for. Gannondorf can be a sympathetic antihero. His speech in WindWaker was pretty damn amazing. When you have people you rule who are counting on you, and the gods are being spiteful, you still have to be responsible and act in your people's interest even if another kingdom calls it evil or becomes the victim.

      They definitely can have occurred, though. Remember, this is *10,000+ years* we are talking about. *Anything* can happen in this timespan. For all we know, every timeline repeated itself 190 times. And notice that I said 10,000+ as opposed to simply 10,000, because while BotW alludes to some events that happened 10,000 years ago, those events involve the origin of Calamity Ganon, a villain that does not exist in any other game, implying that those events 10,000 years ago themselves happened WAY after everything in whatever timeline. For all we know, there literally could be a 1,000,000 year gap between Calamity Ganon origin and the latest events of any timeline. Nothing that Nintendo stated prohibits this from being the case. The gap could 10 years, a million years, a billion gazillion jillion croutonillion years. Who knows? So, yes, literally anything can happen in the timespan.

    • @javiervasquez8995
      @javiervasquez8995 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@angelmendez-rivera351 I somewhat disagree with what you're saying given that the main villain in BotW is still technically Ganondorf. Given that the "story" of BotW *barely* explained anything regarding it's Lore when it comes to Calamity and Zelda's "Sealing Powers" that to me only implies that Nintendo always intended to make a follow up to BotW either as a DLC or full out sequel in order to fully explain the current "situation" of the series.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Javier Vásquez Nintendo only intended to make a sequel to BotW because they realized that giving BotW the self-contained story they had envisioned was impossible. There just was not enough time. The game had already been delayed two years and they could not delay it further. And as much as BotW is packed with content, there was going to be A LOT more content in BotW originally. It had to be scrapped because there simply was no time, once again. Sure, they released DLC to tie loose ends, but at the end of the day, they knew they needed a sequel. None of that disproves anything I said in my comment. Sure, the villain "may be" Ganondorf, but BotW is the only game in which Calamity Ganon exists. That's not missing lore, that's just a straight up fact. Play all 19 canonical The Legend of Zelda games and you will never see a Ganondorf sealed by a green hand nor the origins of the Calamity Ganon. This alone proves my point: the events from 10,000 years prior from the events of BotW are completely disconnected from any of the games in the timeline, with any arbitrary timespan from said events and the latest events in any given timeline. And once again, this still just means that arbitrarily many things can happen in such large timespans. That has absolutely nothing to do with BotW's sequel. C'mon, read my comment more carefully next time.

    • @javiervasquez8995
      @javiervasquez8995 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@angelmendez-rivera351 I get what you're saying. 👌 STILL you really are ignoring the true identity behind the being known as Calamity *GANON.* Just because "it" looks like something we've never seen before in the WHOLE series that doesn't mean it's not meant to be the same character in a new form. As you say BotW was originally going to have even more content to which i assume would have included a full elaborated narrative story explaining Ganondorf's transformation into the Calamity but since we DIDN'T that can only mean Nintendo decided to leave the ending of the game open ended in order to fully develop the story in a direct sequel.
      Ganondorf has ALWAYS been part of the series's Mythology ever since the original The Legend of Zelda. As such it would be really out of place for Nintendo to suddenly and magically dismiss one of the 3 "core elements" that represent the Ultimate Divine Power that sustains the World of Zelda(The Triforce) and replace it with a brand new villain "just because".

    When I first played BotW I thought the old man in the beginning was Ganon. I thought the story was going to be that when Ganon took over 100 years before he awakened an ancient evil so great that he couldn't control it and he basically fucked up Hyrule as a result. Then realizing the folly of being a king without a kingdom, he exiled himself and was going to try to work with Link to try and save Hyrule. I was actually disappointed when none of this was true and it was just the king of hyrule telling Link he needed to stop Ganon. Again.

      That is my theory too. That BOTW is the 'real' Hyrule, and that the other games are mainly that, just legends.
      Maybe that is why the books and characters for this game call everything prior to 10,000 years ago as 'The Era of Myth.' Most of the games called the events of the previous games from before them as 'legends' so might be the devs are implying through them to take the games as legends and myths rather then literal history.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Infinite Fretboard Well, that is exactly how Nintendo intended to go since the very first game in the series. That is how the envisioned these Legend of Zelda games in mind: as legends told about an overlying reality which we can learn about, but we can't directly observe. Of course, American fans never liked this approach and wanted something more like a linear chronology. So Nintendo gave a half-assed chronology with inconsistent timeline splits at Ocarina of Time. And they realized it was a mistake. And they wanted to reboot the series. So, easy solution: the entire timeline itself IS the legend. And then that legend is being told within the real world. That real world is BotW, and we know this is how it is because Nintendo made it implicit multiple times that BotW was a reboot to the whole franchise and more loyal to what they actually wanted to do with the series when first envisioned. This is why Nintendo cleverly placed BotW at the end of all three timelines without convergence.

    • @beyondsleep327
      @beyondsleep327 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      This is definitely strengthened by the fact that three historians in BotW literally debate the causes of the deaths of the 3 leviathans, aka the 3 timelines, and none can agree but all have strong and contradictory evidence for each, much like BotW's timeline placement (history).

      @@SAGERUNE Link, Zelda, Ganondorf=Courage, Wisdom, Power=Farore, Nayru, Din=Wind, Water, Fire.
      This 3 characters and the many "triune" elements that sustain the Zelda Universe are at the very heart of this franchise. To completely erase any of the 3 is to take away the very *identity* of what makes the The Legend of Zelda franchise. Were such a thing to happen how could anyone argue that the franchise would still remain truthful to it's core Mythology? 😐😕 I can agree that Ganondorf has been an overused antagonist over the years as Arlo suggests on his videos but that in NO WAY means Nintendo has to simply take him away from the "equation". That would be really hypocritical given Link and Zelda's own constant presence and relevance in the whole series as well. What they should do instead of giving away Ganondorf is to *expand* the World of Zelda in such a way so that it would include more villains and storylines that would add to the Lore of the series in ways we've never seen before(like with Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, Phantom Hourglass, etc.) while ignoring Ganondorf *for a while.* Nintendo need only gives us more games and time to ignore the "Ganondorf plotline" and then (after a considerable amount of time has passed) give us a new story that completely surprises us with a new incarnation of the Gerudo King of Thieves. This new incarnation of Ganondorf could still have altered motivations and original personality traits while still remaining the "same character" as seen in before games. Do that and the franchise will only continue to remain both original and exciting while still keeping itself truthful to it's core themes.
      That idea right there is far more preferable than to randomly decide to kill him off just because "it's been a long time with the same villain". 😧 If you're gonna be like that then i'll argue that the same thing applies to both Link and Zelda for i see no REAL reason why they shouldn't also be removed from the series as well. 😬
      To be really honest if you were to *forever* take Ganondorf away from the franchise then i see NO reason nor justification why you shouldn't do the same thing with Link and Zelda. 😒 Might as well change the name of the franchise if you are at it. Call it "The Legend of Tingle" for it's clear that Zelda has already passed her time too.
      *No Ganondorf means NO The Legend of Zelda.* 😩😣

      @@javiervasquez8995 Totally agree. From a narrative perspective, for coherence of the lore, it should stay.
      Although, since BoTW is the last chronologically, it would be nice to see the characters trying to interact with their core myths/fates, like trying to break Ganon's curse. I don't know think they should succeed, they should fail, maybe even unleashing a greater evil or strengthening Ganon's curse of reincarnation. But it would make sense, after so many years of the process since SS, that Zelda and Link would gather evidence on the curse and try to break its cycle.
      This attempt to interact with the curse could lead to enhancing the lore, adding ideas and revealing stuff about the deities that we don't know, much like extending the universe, as you said. The greatest benefits that BoTW and SS extreme time lime can bring to the lore is add elements and expand them, be it through the original stories and conditions of the lore, like SS, or through more experienced and knowledgeable characters, that would try to interact with their fates (and if successful at that, would rather transcend and enhance future interactions than change its core)

      @@javiervasquez8995 As Arlo said in the video, Ganondorf, Link, and Zelda aren't the only reoccurring things in the timeline. So if Link and Zelda (in the next game) manage to brake Ganandorf's curse specifically, that doesn't mean that he still won't be reincarnated throughout the series. As Arlo stated in the video again, Demise will just have to find a new host (or reincarnate again. It's pretty unclear 😐).
      I think this is the best option, because instead of ignoring Ganondorf for a few games to freshen things up, we get a new (or returning) villan, and just change Ganandorf's dinamic with the characters (to freshen things up). He could help out by leading the gerudos against the new villan. Or take the villans side, and we could see a return to the evil Ganondorf we're used to.
      TL;DR: Remove Ganon's curse only in next game=new villan and keeping reincarnation. Wich=keeping Ganondorf.

    I think the Zelda series going in the direction of gull on sci-fi is very possible, considering how the original drafts for The Legend of Zelda was going to incorporate the idea of traveling between two time periods: the medieval-style past, and the far off sci-fi future. Recycling that potential setting would be extremely interesting, even for one spin off.

    A few points I thought of while watching.
    - Way back when, A Link to the Past was originally planned to halfway take part in an era of high tech, instead of the dark world.
    - BotW had concepts for 90s style Link I'm sure we all have seen by now. It was just one drawing from early concept phase but the idea prevails.
    I'd love to see scifi Zelda with a minor twist on the old formula. Instead of technology based on magic that is long forgotten, the technology is there but *the magic is leaving* (TM). And you have to find the mac guffins and Zelda to bring back the triforce and use it to restore the *Glory of the Old Land* with a message about environmentalism even more akin to Ghibli movies than BotW was. Idk I think the real scifi treatment would feel like the fresh take Nintendo has been putting of for way too long...

    Loved this video so much! It’s funny, I’m working on a Zelda project of my own and I had already included so many of the ideas you mention here. I think we all would love, for example, a new Ganondorf that isn’t actually the bad guy (in my story, he’s reincarnated just as Zelda and Link, but he kinda remembers all the stuff he went through in his past life and decides he doesn’t want to be Demise’s puppet anymore, so he casts that spirit away and Demise has to find a new vessel). I also think Nintendo wants to make a drastic change for the series and I’m all in for that. Thank you so much for all of your videos and the amount of work that it takes! los, I’d love to watch an entire video of your ideas of a new villain 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    Zelda story theories in particular are the most dangerous game Arlo. Much like typewriting monkeys, a bunch of impatient nerds chattering to each other on a webpage do eventually create great stories. Create stories that we get so invested in and are so high concept that the illusion we create in our individual heads to fill in the gaps is perfectly catered to our individual tastes, and end up worlds better than anything a professional writing staff will ever achieve. I was on the Nsider forums in it's prime. I've seen the damage that investing in fan theories causes to one's mind.
    It's a dark magic, one that is alluring, and ultimately, corrupts...and it's delicious to indulge in every single time. Cast your dark spell on us Arlo!

The only reason I was still alive was because he wasn't fully back yet. The "he has given up on reincarnation" bit to me meant he had been holding back in the previous fight. This was him going all out in a last ditch attempt to stop me before he was fully defeated again. That's what I got from it anyway.

    I really like the theory that Demise's curse/hatred is something that can posess otherwise normal people. I've always been of the mind that the triforce of power has something to do with it, either being some sort of carrier of his will or just making the owner more subsceptible to his influence since "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely".
    I had the idea years ago of a new Zelda villain actually starting the game as Link's childhood friend, and maybe even having gameplay in the first third or so of the game revolve around teamwork with this ai-controlled character. Then he or she obtains the Triforce of Power and spirals out of control, forcing Link to have to find a means of stopping him or her from enacting their well-inentioned extremist agenda on Hyrule and finding tools to replace the functions your friend served in the first part of the game.
    Although, if I may say so myself, I think this idea will also fall victim to the "it's too cool so it'll probably never happen" clause.

      The Triforce of Power is not inherently Evil though as it was created by the Goddesses to be both a symbol and the source of their power in the Zelda World. It's supposed to belong to whoever most embodies it's Power similar to the Triforces of Courage and Wisdom.
      Your idea of the Curse choosing a new "vessel" does sound interesting so i think that would be a great idea nonetheless.

    • @Nyahahameha
      @Nyahahameha 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't mean to imply I think the Triforce of Power itself is evil. My theories are that either a) Demise hitched his curse onto the Triforce of Power, or otherwise made it target its future wielders, either to ironically mirror how the other two pieces would always belong to a Link and a Zelda, or explicitly because only someone with that power would be able to cause enough trouble for them; or b) that holding the Triforce of Power alone just so happens to make people more vulnerable to being possessed by Demise's curse, just because of the natures of people and the incredible kind of person it would take to wield such power responsibly without the guidance offered by the other two pieces.
      Does that make more sense?

    Personally, I think that saying there's only so many stories you can tell with the same three characters is like saying there are only so many sonnets you can write using the same rhyme scheme and meter--which is totally false. I would never get tired of the "Zelda, Link, Gandon(dorf)" trio so long as the writers make artistic use of template and surround them with compelling story elements. I do think we're due for a big change, but I am actually terrified that they will retire Ganon(dorf). I never want him to go away completely. It's good to have our Skull Kids and Vaatis, but I always want Ganon(dorf) to eventually come back.
    Also, I love the current blend of sci-fi and magic, but I would never want to stray from the medieval tone of the series and tip too far toward the sci-fi. The chivalric myth appeal is too great--knights, princesses, swords, evil sorcerers. I guess I'm a traditionalist.

      Exactly. It only feels like he appears a lot because he's featured in the likes of Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors, where of course he's going to be Zelda's villain rep. Within the Zelda series itself, Ganon appears in less than half the games, and Ganondorf as a human only appears in three!

    Personally, I don't feel that Ganon as a character has gotten old. Sure we have other series villains such as Vaati, Majora, and Agahnim, and they are really cool, but in my opinion, Nintendo has proven to find a way to make each incarnation of Ganon unique and interesting. Even if we don't see someone other than Ganon in the near future, we can be confident we won't see a game as bland as "Link meets Zelda and they go fight Ganon together." There is always so much more to the stories.

    A hyrule that takes place on a mountain or cliff side or something, where the game is just a big long climb to the top where you'd fight ganon. shortcuts to the lower parts of the mountain exist like a metroid-vania. have climbing combat. get a bird like skyward sword. have a glider like avatar. jump from mountain to mountain. just think itd be interesting gameplay wise and aesthetically.

    I really want a game like “The Legend of Zelda: Reckoning”, where Link is confronted by the Goddess Hylia and is told of the curse and all his past lives. He soon realises that all his efforts are useless if the suffering and fighting will only continue after every victory. The game then ends with Link finally destroying Demise’s curse and we get a montage of all previous Zeldas, Links and Ganons fading away until finally everything fades to black.
    The credits roll and just as we think it’s all done for sure, birdsong starts and we see a boy roll from his bed. He looks out a new land and puts on his favourite green tunic.
    The end of an era and a true fresh start for the franchise.

    On theories, I really like Game Theorists take on the Convergence Theory, with Hyrule Warriors being the where it all happened. Since all the timelines did warp into existence in that game, and the Champion's Tunic being blue where the only time blue was used on Link was in Hyrule Warriors. Matt Patt makes some really good points in the video, and I'm pretty much sold on that idea, until the devs themselves explain it themselves, that's my head canon: Hyrule Warriors was the prequel to Breath of the Wild, in the timeline.

      Chi se non il pinky Yes because something from the early 90s where literally everything except for mainstream cartoons had very shit voice acting should determine whether or not they should have a voiced link. That’s like saying Resident Evil should not have voice acting because the voice acting in the PS1 titles were terrible(ly entertaining) (especially the first game), but the voice acting of that series has been amazing since the remake of the original in the early 2000s.
      With that being said I do think they should wait until they take voice acting way more seriously before voicing Link (at least the English voice acting). Botw would’ve been a bad game to start with a voiced link cause there were only a few decent works, and 1 really good work. The rest weren’t the greatest.
