  • Today we're visiting the East Demi Bastion in Dover.
The East Demi Bastion is located on the East side of Dover Castle, positioned high up on cliffs at the end of the defensive ring of Napoleonic fortifications surrounding the castle.
This Bastion comprises of a fortified guard room with casemates facing into the dry ditch, along with gun positions and expense magazines on the surface. There's also a spiral staircase that leads down into a small tunnel system beneath the bastion featuring lookout holes in the cliff face and a tunnel that runs under the dry ditch and into Dover Castle itself. Unfortunately on our visit this section was thoroughly sealed.
During the later part 19th Century the bastion was upgraded with larger firing positions to house two 9-inch 12-ton RML (Rifled Muzzle Loading) cannons and became known as the East Demi Battery, classed as one of the Palmerston Fort upgrades. This caused issues however due to the cannons large size and close proximity to the cliff face. The positions were never actually used and were disarmed around 1900.
We hope you enjoy this explore with us.

Yeah that would stop most. That metal sheet was enough for us to not even think about it, and now knowing there is also a locked door behind. It would be awesome to see some pics of the inside, I hear theres a window looking over the port thats an amazing view. My email is jambokue@gmail.com

Shame EH don’t look after these along with the castle and open them up to everyone.

100%, I would guess it's partly to do with insurance and the fact that there would have to be access from the castle which then gives easier access from the outside. But it is a sad this history doesn't get shown, this is one of the reasons we do what we do and record it.
