There IS a storage spot for minimus. Its in the back of the truck and right in the middle towards the front. youll see it. There is a peg that fits him.
To give it its due, this was the first mainline G1 Ultra Magnus that incorporated the truck into the transformation since the 80s (not counting the die cast one).
Yes, I’ll give Hasbro props for 1) IDW/G1/86-like 2) integrated Minimus Ambus 3) movie/TV-accuarate transformation. I mean, I like the Seige/Kingdom “armored-up white Optimus” homage, too, but CW was cool, and with “better”missile launchers.
I love this toy. It is IDW Magnus. What it needs, and what I gave it, was a custom paint makeover. It is COVERED with details all over that just need to be painted to be highlighted.
I remember getting this guy off Kijiji in the silliest way possible. The guy asked me to meet in front of a Sobeys and there I was going up to a black van asking “ya got it for me?” I like to imagine ppl thought it was a drug deal only to see a fucking transformer coming out of the car Lmao. For that memory I’ll always love this guy 😂
I got him on eBay a few years ago and he came with custom filler pieces on the back of his legs that weren’t mentioned in the listing so I guess I got lucky. Still prefer the SS version and the former has been sold online.
Surprised you didn't mention how absurd the cab is, that based on the ladder and door the cab could dwarf a 4-story apartment, 3 stories of which are just the grill.
one day well get a magnus with a minimus and that minimus with another smaller minimus, sooo desperately need a full and fancy lost light crew (MMCs been great for that but also i like being able to afford them and them not running out of stock before i can)
God yeah, Ultra Magnus would need to be massive for the smallest minumus to even transform tho, but it's a fun idea AND YEAH I NEED SOMEONE TO MAKE AFFORDABLE FIGURES OF THE LOST LIGHT CREW, we are thankfully gonna get a Rodimus figure soonish that is incredibly accurate (tho it's still gonna be really expensive) but i hope they start to test with other characters aswell, i would kill for a MTMTE accurate Whirl
I can't afford a Studio Series 86 Magnus, so I might get this one. The whole mechanic of the truck opening up for the minifigure to drive it or even a headmaster is very appealing.
The 86 figure having a bigger truck mode does actually make a lot of sense, specifically because of the cab. This figure limits the size of the cab to what fits in the chest, meanwhile 86 Magnus folds it up a lot, allowing it to fit in the same space while being bigger in truck mode
Even considering the plastic and combiner wars engineering on this guy, I think he still holds up really well, even without the upgrade kit. Only thing holding him back for me is the limited posing, a lack of paint, and the guns honestly. I think the plastic on the prime wars leaders really show why leader class changed so much after Siege, but this still hits. He looks awesome in both modes, I love the Minimus inclusion and how he can pilot Magnus, love how well he carries cars, the transformation is simple and fun, it really feels like a less complex take on the commander's conversion. I have him on a shelf with my other Magnus's and he looks great with them. When I originally got him (before siege), I really wanted the more cartoon coloured takara deco but now having the SS86 and Siege which both cover an accurate G1 and Stylilised G1 respectively, the toy colours really give him a unique edge and make him feel like a true IDW Magnus. I love him, he'll always be my first Magnus, and even if he isn't the best chug magnus. He's my favourite.
This is one of those figures that despite its obvious flaws, still holds up really well. He looks like hes supposed to in both modes, the whole mech suit gimmick for Minimus is sweet and a different take on the inner robot. Honestly I prefer it to the siege/kingdom mold, and if I hadnt gotten SS86 Magnus this would still be my main display figure.
Thrilling 30s and Prime Wars had some great figures for their time. This particular Magnus mold managed to capture the IDW aesthetic and be proportioned well. It did what it needed to do and did it great. With the Siege and SS molds also now in the rear view I guess Hasbro can continue their "Perfect X" chase.
I got the Japanese Unite Warriors version of this guy from a friend and I'm very glad I did, especially with how that version swaps Minimus for Alpha Trion. The reworking in Titans Return for Power Master Optimus is also oddly good. Not perfect, but good.
The Takara Legends version wipes the floor with this version. Anyway, this mold was just okay. I got him not as a G1 Magnus but because I liked Minimus Ambus in the IDW comic. Also, We wouldn't have gotten Takara Legends Ginrai without this mold.
This is by far the simplest transformation for a non-partsforming G1 Ultra Magnus (aside from the missiles) that I have seen, yet the results are quite epic. The way the cab worked is so simple to the point where Perfect Effect made a core bot that could seemlessly replace the stock truck.
Hello That Toy Guy. I actually have this Ultra Magnus. Thank you for the review of this toy. I subscribed to this channel not too long ago and I love your commentary.
Wonderfully timed since I’ve been catching up with Unite Warriors. Not going after this guy since I have SS86 Magnus, but I do remember all the praise this guy got at the time (and apparently still is, going by the comments!).
Ah, this mold- it’s the usual punching bag for me whenever I want to show off a bad figure. I know he’s not too horrible, but he came out almost a decade after the 07 movie, and I still proudly display those toys. I don’t proudly display my TR Leader Optimus. Hasbro had, at the time of this mold’s release, shown that they can do much better, yet they chose not to. Honestly with all the hollowness, super thin plastic, and the bare-minimum of articulation to be considered passable, it seems to me that they were deliberately trying to make this mold as cheaply as possible. Perhaps to make some other figure in the wave extra-good?
I got this guy for like somewhere between 50 and 70 quid on Ebay last year in his box sealed. It isn't the IDW coloured one unfortunately but I still love it. The commander class Magnus had just come out but I wanted an IDW design for the Lost Light shelf, not G1.
Great review! Man, I had to do my homework on this one…been awhile. So, this was 2015. I remember, a few years before, kind of a drought of big Ultra Magnus figures - WFC/FOC games-1 deluxe (?) and Transformers Prime-1 medium/1 big. I was shopping for a big Ultra Magnus figure, and I decided to get the medium “Beast Hunters” version, though he seemed “small” for an Ultra Magnus. Discounted, too. The big TFP one just seemed too odd. Then the CW one came out, and though he’s a lot more now, I thought he cost a lot at the time, and passed. Of course, a few years later, the Prime Trilogy, and I probably spent more on the Netflix Spoiler/KO-Siege Ultra Magnuses… LOL Hmmm, I always had the impression (due to the truck cab) that he formed a huge truck. I guess Studio Series 86 is better-sized, though. At least CW/86 Magnus have plenty of car carrier space. Not so for Siege/Kingdom, and for mainline versions between the WFC/FOC games and CW… Edit: TFP had 2 medium Ultra Magnuses…
Having the Minimus Ambus included was one of my favourite things about this toy. Being one of the few in my local group that was knee deep in the comics at the time, it felt like I was in on some very inside joke. (There is a minimus Ambus joke in there somewhere)
I had the Japanese version, and bought an upgrade kit, though not the one you were referring to. I wound up selling it for the Kingdom version, then bought the SS86 figure for my movie shelf. I kept the Kingdom figure for my Season 3/Headmasters shelf, so he's my Jack Angel, but SS86 is my Robert Stack, lol.
minimus has a series of tabs on the underside of his alt mode. one on each arm around where the wheels are, and 1 each on the legs that kinda shove together into a wider single tab in the center, closer to the front of the car. there is a series of corresponding grooves right on the floor of the red section and the white part where ultra magnus's waist is that those tabs can slot into. these groves are quite long, so you can position minimus more or less wherever along them. i owned this toy years ago and have since given it away or sold it, don't remember which, so this may not be entirely accurate, but it should be close enough.
For the longest time the only way to complete the look was the X2Toys XT-009 upgrade kit: it had gap fillers, new arms/hands, ankle tilts, helmet with different face sculpts and a ginormous cannon. Unfortunately they went extinct. But if you have a 3D printer, you can buy and download files from Funbie Studios that makes him look a lot like the legend's scale Iron Factory IF EX-44 City Commander.
The way he transforms Magnus gives me mad anxiety Especially when folding the chestplate into the trailer, I found a way to do it without the clipping and possible plastic stress Basically: Untab the side parts, rotate them to the bottom of the large hollow part, fold the chestplate with the legs, pull the side parts away a bit and THEN rotate them into place
Really like the simple engineering, and updated look for the carrier mode. A much nicer option I feel than the puzzle former known as Siege Magnus though I prefer that one's robot mode to this IDW iteration. While SS 86 is probably the best we're going to see for a while this looks like a fun toy if you can find it abandoned in a thrift store somewhere. Wouldn't consider new as I've never been a fan of the lightweight/hollow feel of most if not all the Combiner Wars line which was not an improvement from the Power of the Primes line.
I have that one too! Although I lost the headmaster it came with. The first time I saw this video I thought that ultra Magnus was a retool of The Optimus figure for the reason that headmasters can fit in the cab in vehicle mode, but minimus can’t fit in ultra Magnus.
I remember seeing this at toys r us while I was in college but I didnt have enough money to buy it. That toys r us had a lot of great figures. Leader skywarp, a lot of tlk figures, titans return alpha trio and more.
I used to have this guy, and i loved him so much, but i lost it somewhere in my home and havent seen it since, but i remember the minicon being dismembered and scattered
I still like this Magnus. I have the Takara one which has a different white plastic so it isn't yellowing even after, like 7 or 8? years on display and the blues are much more vibrant. I also got the hands and feet upgrade which makes it look a lot better and gives it wrists and ankles. Looks great alongside MMC Megatron and Rodimus
I have two of the three that I know of: the normal Hasbro version that I customized and the Takara Legends version. There is another version I have seen in person from a myltipack with Arcee, Thrilling 3o Springer and Kup where everyone has some king of metallic / spectra flame paint job that was too coatly to me.
I have been collecting Transformers off and on since the 80's. And...only once have I sought out an Ultra Magnus figure. It's the only one I have. The Siege Magnus with the grey tint. The red, white and blue color scheme was always too loud to me. Never mind how many alts they created for him. Every variant of this guy should come with a shelf. Good review.
My first g1 styled Ultra Magnus. I still like it. I had to return the first one I got because it had a broken thigh out of the box… I was lucky they had another one to get an exchange. I never cared about the Minimus Ambus, so as soon as I saw the perfect effect upgrade I had to get it… It improves the toy a lot. Also I have the platinum edition one wich I only took out of the box to check if it was fine with QC and then back to the box it went thanks to the normal one having the upgrade…
I'm surprised you had trouble getting him. I bought him last year on eBay for stock leader price. And that was only after I lost out on 2 separate auctions which had him going for way cheaper. Mine didn't have the issue with minibus ambus falling apart either, so that might just be your copy.
Yeah, my CW UM was marked down because he had these panel lines done by marker when he was used, I got mine at my local GameXchange store, and he was priced at $9.96. I know, that's cheaper than later Generations figures, believe me, I got Titans Return Blurr, Combiner Wars Rodimus, Blackjack, Swindle, Power Of The Primes Blot and Sinnertwin, Kingdom Rattrap< Core Prime, Generations Selects Bug bite, G2 Sandstorm, Rotorstorm. Generations Selects Smokescreen and Deep cover were Gamestop exclusives, so they don't count.
Never picked this guy up as I was more interested in the Combiner Wars combiners; I have gone back and gotten Leader Megatron from the line, from a convention. I do have the TR Powermaster Optimus Prime that was retooled from this Magnus figure, with Apex (aka Hi-Q, aka Ginrai) able to ride in the cab in truck mode. (My copy has a minor QR mis-assembly, with one of the rear tires being a front tire instead so the longer axle wobbles when rolled)
i always thought that Minimus was a robot(or human not sure which) that just uses Magnus' body as a mech suit to keep his legacy alive. i have him. he is in storage though but not horrible. i also have the Power Master Prime version of this mold. his greys are not as crisp anymore but he is a fun figure too.
Last year you gave the tr02 galaxy optimus a pretty bad review, do you have any interest in their new version of it coming out soon? Also will you be reviewing it, and if not, do you expect it to be better?
Good toy, though i wish they gave him his IDW head and went all in with that design. The paint is also lacking, but the Takara and 5 pack ones look to fix that.
If you can track down the LG Magnus, he's no less flimsy but the colors and paint are amazing and worth it. Funbie Studios on Cults 3D has some amazing upgrades for this guy, if you are crafty enough to do some 3D printing and painting or know a guy.
My personal Magnus. I haven’t gotten SS86, I’m sure it’s great, but this is fantastic. He’s fun, great looking, and all around just good crack. Oh yeah and he’s IDW Magnus.
I also have this figure, it makes me wish that kingdom magnus had transformed this way, I personally think that the taller the shoulder stacks, the better Magnus looks.
last year after my exams in like august i was allowed to get anything i wanted from my mom as a reward for good grades and i was contemplating wheather to get leader magnus or legacy motormaster, then the pre order for 86 magnus went up. fastest pre order i ever made and i dont regret it
Their is a version of Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus that comes Alpha Trion instead of Minimus Ambus. I think it was from Takara, so probably exclusive to Japan.
I want ankle/feet upgrades and better hand articulation for this guy, but I've gotten the platinum edition version and i like him more than the classic versions
This is probably gonna be my Magnus for the foreseeable future. Is the plastic crap? Yes Is the articulation kinda meh? Also yes. Are there problems with the joints? Is he hollow? Yes. But he's the only Magnus so far that's an actual IDW Magnus, complete with Minimus Ambus and I'm an IDW fan and I really don't have any kind of connection to any other Magnus variant so…
thin and rickety is my main complaint with most of the transformers toys over the last couple of years XP its why ive mainly moved over to Tobot and Sentai
I didn't end up with Mangus, but I got PM Optimus and the Takara Ginrai with God Bomber (even getting Takara Wheelie so I could have Shuta to go with Cab and Minerva), and I was just never happy with how the legs never felt correctly aligned with being upright on either version. Takara Ginrai did feel better, and I did wish I had gotten my hands on the PM Optimus 3rd party kit for PM Optimus Were they perfect? Nah Am I looking forward to MP Ginrai? Yes, but that's supposed to be on another level
I like the idea of IDW magnus, would've bought it too had it been a better toy...also, minimus isn't madnus, he just took over his corpse after Magnus died...
I got the Takara Legends one and it's still one of the better Magnuses I own and I own the Kingdom one lol. If I find a cheap SS86 during TFcon I'd get one but I'm not paying $300 for one lol.
I definitely prefer CW Magnus to Kingdom Magnus. I can't get over Kingdom Magnus' exposed hands in alt mode. I'm still surprised no one made an addon that just covered the hands neatly and made them look like part of the truck bed or trailer hitch. It also helps that CW Magnus can actually fit other cars on his trailer.
There IS a storage spot for minimus. Its in the back of the truck and right in the middle towards the front. youll see it. There is a peg that fits him.
There is!? Damn I don't think I know anyone who knows about that. Thanks!
Below me gets burger🍔 cuz why not

@@ThatToyGuy yeah, it's like a spot with three tracks that line up with all of minimus' weird wheel bumps
@ThatToyGuy I found it out of frustration of not having a spot to store him! Lol..but its legit..it fits him
The virgin Kingdom Magnus vs the chad Combiner Wars Magnus
vs legend 86 magnus
This is the Magnus I really wanted a Diaclone repaint from, with the little Ambus guy done in red to homage the Powered Buggy.
Yes! I am glad I am not alone.
That would have been amazing
Ah, yes, leader Magnus one of the best from the Prime Wars trilogy.
This and Optimus were the best leaders arguably

It's amazing how this guy aged.. despite being a ways behind in quality, it still can stand among some of the newer guys

The only problem I have with this mold is that I'm authentically terrified that I'll snap the head off if I transform it too often.
Just a heads up at the store where u bought lugnut they also have a leader Magnus I forget from which series
I love this figure so much, whenever the next time I can get I’m getting it
I have the Power master Optimus and that actually does have a place in the cab for the headmaster.
As a person who also owned the headmaster version, I can confirm this
Was that a sonic screwdriver in the intro bit?
There's another upgrade kit that gives him posable feet and a hammer (and more stuff but I forgot what) but it's impossible to find anywhere
i always thought that Minimus was a robot(or human not sure which) that just uses Magnus' body as a mech suit to keep his legacy alive. i have him. he is in storage though but not horrible. i also have the Power Master Prime version of this mold. his greys are not as crisp anymore but he is a fun figure too.
Smash or pass ultra magnus
Is that even a question? Obviously smash.
Smash
Smash
ITS A ROBOT?!
@@The-Radio-Demon-Himself So? People want to smash the female bots.
Last year you gave the tr02 galaxy optimus a pretty bad review, do you have any interest in their new version of it coming out soon? Also will you be reviewing it, and if not, do you expect it to be better?
I bought the Japanese version of this mold. It's great!
Man am I glad I have the 86 version, but this guy has always been an interesting one. Maybe one day I will get him... maybe.
How long should that code for Tfsafari last? I'm getting winter optimus once payday comes through.
I'd like to get this guy. I love the IDW designs. Definitely waiting for a decent price though.
Are you gonna review the hammon collection carno
I struggle with keeping my copy or selling him. There just arent enough IDW figures in my opinion. How many really are there? like 6?
I have the Optimus remold of this figure. Really thinking about getting this one, too.
5:42 The long arm of the law.
I also have this figure, it makes me wish that kingdom magnus had transformed this way, I personally think that the taller the shoulder stacks, the better Magnus looks.
last year after my exams in like august i was allowed to get anything i wanted from my mom as a reward for good grades
and i was contemplating wheather to get leader magnus or legacy motormaster, then the pre order for 86 magnus went up. fastest pre order i ever made and i dont regret it
I like that you put some of the characters from idw when you show him bc rewind and chromedome
I remember owning this back in the day
It wasn't bad, but the 86 one is just so much nicer
Their is a version of Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus that comes Alpha Trion instead of Minimus Ambus. I think it was from Takara, so probably exclusive to Japan.
I want ankle/feet upgrades and better hand articulation for this guy, but I've gotten the platinum edition version and i like him more than the classic versions
I wanted to buy combiner wars Megatron, but the store didn't have it. The only leader who was there was Ultra Magnus, so i got hi instead
I still have fond memories of CW Ultra Magnus but man the hands not being able to grip the guns was annoying.
This is probably gonna be my Magnus for the foreseeable future. Is the plastic crap? Yes Is the articulation kinda meh? Also yes. Are there problems with the joints? Is he hollow? Yes. But he's the only Magnus so far that's an actual IDW Magnus, complete with Minimus Ambus and I'm an IDW fan and I really don't have any kind of connection to any other Magnus variant so…
See i found an offer to get the platinum editions from the 86 movie and i still dont know whether its a good buy
3:10 you should review the upgrade kit too
thin and rickety is my main complaint with most of the transformers toys over the last couple of years XP its why ive mainly moved over to Tobot and Sentai
they made a upgarde cit how did i not know?!😐
I can't unsee the elephant face on his chest/torso.
I didn't end up with Mangus, but I got PM Optimus and the Takara Ginrai with God Bomber (even getting Takara Wheelie so I could have Shuta to go with Cab and Minerva), and I was just never happy with how the legs never felt correctly aligned with being upright on either version.
Takara Ginrai did feel better, and I did wish I had gotten my hands on the PM Optimus 3rd party kit for PM Optimus
Were they perfect? Nah
Am I looking forward to MP Ginrai? Yes, but that's supposed to be on another level
Wait there’s an upgrade kit to make him a tiny robot!
I’m just kidding I know you mentioned it
Also I really enjoyed the livestream the other day
I like the idea of IDW magnus, would've bought it too had it been a better toy...also, minimus isn't madnus, he just took over his corpse after Magnus died...
i remember when the 86 one got revealed everyone was claiming the CW one was far superior 💀💀💀
What TO store did you find your first one at?
I got the Takara Legends one and it's still one of the better Magnuses I own and I own the Kingdom one lol. If I find a cheap SS86 during TFcon I'd get one but I'm not paying $300 for one lol.
He really was a good Magnus for the time. I got the Legends version cause I liked the paint job on it better then CW.
