The problem was that they all had to do the same 3 things, so they ended up feeling like the same figure. And the sheer quantity you need for multiple combiner teams was overwhelming.
I feel like there was such a missed opportunity by Hasbro not repainting POTP Starscream as a Leozack and maybe even retooling/remolding POTP Beachcomber to be able to become a chestplate or gun so they could make Jallguar
Coming from the Uni trilogy and then the movies, Combiner Wars was everything I ever wanted. Good combiners that was more than 3 bots was a non-starter. With the P/E addon kits the combiner war designs were great.
I’m glad you like this figure. He was one that I definitely enjoyed when he first came out but after a while of him just sitting in a bin, I recently sold him to a local toy store. I hope whoever buys him next will have more fun with him.
One of my favorite CW combiners too. The standard hands and feet work better proportionally if you leave the lower sections of the tank in tank mode, which makes the legs a bit longer.
Combiner Wars might be a weak line for most... But I respect their ambition. When it comes to the Deluxe figures, they went for G1 versatility/compatibility, but adding modern articulation and more unique transformations. In my opinion, their only big flaw were the Voyager sized torsos, they should have been "Leader" class (Voyager size but more solid and involved)
Agreed on all points. I really like that they went with the "Scramble City" style, even if that meant sacrificing the kind of cartoon accuracy we've seen on the recent Menasor. But the toys would have been even better (and presumably more stable on their feet) if the central figures had been leaders instead of voyagers. It's a shame they had to compromise the design to fit the planogram.
I never got a full combiner from combiner wars and potp, but I did get assorted figures, enough to make my own custom combiner. I use sludge and slug as legs, darkwing and dreadwind as arms, and either silverbolt or onslaught as the torso. It’s actually really to mess around and customize with combiner wars figures
I think Legacy or maybe the sequel to Legacy will do Liokaiser at some point. Deathsaurus is going to be a thing in Haslab so we will get the Breastformers redone as well. I really hope so they are my favourite G1 combiner team.
Was fortunate enough to get this combiner back around 2016 for a decent price, though never had any luck with the 3rd party combiner hands and feet, so I just left the tanks untransformed to gain the extra height to make the arms less big. Disappointed no company had a go at making combining 3rd party fig versions of Liozak and Jallguar that could combine into main Liokaiser body to replace the Dezarus fig, but I suppose not many would get a Liokaiser and wanting to upgrade compared to the other sets (even though they made a Computron upgrade kit).
My main issue was some countries (mine included) didn't get every set released. Several were skipped like set 2 and 4 and that caused an issue for those that had set 1 as you had four parts to Superion and 1 part for Menasor.
I really wish that during Power of the Primes they would have done a retool of the Starscream chest mold as Leozack. I've seen fan made customs and it just works so well. Maybe while they were at it, also a retool of Alphabravo/Blades as Deathcobra.
I’d always wanted a representation of liokaiser but it’s expensive and fee and far between. The G1 is way WAY to expensive to get complete or loose complete and has GPS issues, the CW looks very nice granted it’s 5 not 6 but that’s an issue with the line limits but again expensive to get, there’s the 3P hades which is I think 400-500$ not bad for a combiner team but it’s an old/dated combiner with I think some joint issues. Then that’s it combiner wise those 3 for now Iron Factory has a legends one coming out with renders but an unknown release date it looks promising. The only was I could see getting a good modern figure is a haslab thing to give the 6 bot combiner proper budget to be a solid team
Great review! The PE hands and feet are essential with any of the Combiner Wars gestalts. I used the dark blue KO Abominus set for my LioKaiser because the spiky knuckles seemed more appropriate for this character.
If I was a dad and give my kids some transformers toys, I‘d rather give them combiner wars than legacy evolution for example. Easy to transform in seconds, more time to play, less time to go to dad because some parts fell off or some panels won‘t line up.
I chose Unite Warriors over Combiner Wars. They're good for now, but I'd love to get new Aerialbots and Protectobots, and Technobots wouldn't hurt either but not necessary.
Combiner Wars had to do a lot on a low budget. I think the biggest handicapp was the scramble city style which I was never a big fan of. I'd rather have dedicated combination if it means unique engineering. Hasbro's Devastator and Predaking being a good example. The hands and feet they are sold with for combined mode are lame no doubt but it's a double edged sword. They were trying to deal with the loose parts in a way that could be weaponized at least and still scramble city style. 3rd party options look and function much better in combined mode but have zero integration otherwise. Also while some decos in this set are better then others the reason they look the way they do is to be accurate to the source. As paint apps go, even the worse looking figures are still much better looking then your average combiner wars because the set is a premium deco.
Actually liokaiser got leaked recently and is most likely coming out next year, with a mainline version of Deathsaurus coming out in the star seekers sublime

I get why they wanted to include Deathsaurus, but I would have rather had a retooled Silver bolt as a Leozack. But maybe a Power of the Primes Voyager Starscream repaint wouldn't make a bad replacement, I just hate that mold.
The hand foot guns were tolerable as hands but they're were tiny tiny tiny as feet. The lack of ankle title and forward and back also crippled articulation in addition to giving gestalt ape like proportions due to their small size.

US Computron! I love the better official hands and feet, and Scrounge is a must! I will admit the Takara version has better paint. Also Victorion or Megatronia aren't too bad
The one major disappointment with Combiner Wars is that we never got a Deathcobra to go with this set. Why? We have a perfectly good helicopter mode! Not even a BotCon figure...
I didn't bite on this set because I was so sure that Takara will make a 2 deluxe torso to make an accurate one. This was the era they were willing to make new parts to make more accurate toys. Kinda sad it didn't happen because I really didn't mind the limbs but the SkyReign torso really didn't work.
I hope we do see a "proper" generations Liokaiser sooner rather than later, but I imagine that it's a lower priority next to the other G1 combiner teams.
I liked the CW hands/feet; they're practical weapons that turn into either hands or feet; you could buy any 4 deluxes and mix and match. I know a lot of people complain, but the 3rd party kits and later takara box set alternatives were all loose parts w/o a function outside of combined form; they were cheats.
Nice vid man love it. The little bit at the start was funny and that menasor mention as well. That thing is so wacky 🤣. Great content 👍. Also praying you get that combiner and if you make a vid on it ( which you might ) i know it will be funny.
I *really* wanna get the Combiner Wars Superion and *maybe* Unite Warriors Grand Galvatron (Only for Ghost Starscream, Prime Breakdown and Armada Thrust though) but they're all just so expensive these days, it's ridiculous.
I kind of like Lio Kaiser, I may pick up one day (for good price). What stopped me at was that "Desaurus. I mean they could've used that Cyclonus/Silverbolt mold one more time for a Liozak. Say where do get Romulan Ale?
If you do more Combiner Wars, could you PLEASE do the Combaticons at some point? (Definitely a while later since you did the FOC team.) CW Bruticus was the only team I completed back then, a childhood favorite of mine. (And ragged as hell by now.)
Always wished Takara did an extensive retool like they did for the Seacons. There's customs on TFW that take a jet and modded Jeep combiner to make a proper Leo kaiser. Odds are Takara could have easily done that.
i weirdly have just a guyhawk. i got him lose from a resale store; they didn't have any of the others. but, he makes a great leg for galvatronus with the original blast off, and the dreadwind/darkwing pair for arms.
I’m glad iron factory is making their own liokaiser granted legends scale isn’t for everyone but the whole set will still be cheaper than this version or the Tfc toys version
I would try to get teh KO hands and feet upgrades they have rubber stoppers to prevent him from sliding and toes are more pointed over sneaker looking and the fingers are square. This was Hasbro coming off T30 and trying to cut costs to make more money they do fit that nostalgia feeling but they are not good figures compared to what we once had. Sure Legacy Menasor is better but your looking at double the price you should expect it to be better but also surrfers from the price gouging stuff and mold reuse issues.
This is easily my favorite combiner team character and original design wise, but this set... does not do them justice. I got it because I want to have some version of the team, so I use the deluxe and the Bot Con Leozack as my team for now. They really need a better update though
Combiner Wars: Uggh. I love it and hate it. The teams were great. I even loved the sixth member added to the teams. I hate the sports car mold. I didn't at first, but by the time we get 7th or 8th repaint I was actively grinding my teeth. I also hated that Hasbro knew collectors were starved for some characters and used CW to sell a not so good version. That is the move of some bottom feeding 3rd party, not from top tier first party Hasbro. Here's my micro review of the combiners. Menasor: Then 7, Now 3 - I got caught up in the hype. Especially since my son was getting into Transformers too. And seeing his eyes light up as he put Menasor together is a cherished memory. but so many problems really cracked the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. Superion: Then 7, Now 5 - Silverbolt is the superior (pun intended) torso. And I liked, later loved, the Alpha Bravo helicopter mold. Ultra Prime: Then 5, Now 4 - More of a proof of concept that these combiners are interchangeable. Galvatronus: Then 6, Now 4 - Another concept combiner so if you have four limbs and a torso, you had a combiner. I liked that Galvatron was inside Cyclonus. Defensor: Then 6, Now 3 - Overall a solid combiner. Bruticus: Then 6, Now 3 - Essentially, the Decepticon version of Defensor. I liked jet Blast-Off (I call her Lift-Off) Battle Core OP: Then 5, Now 2 - This is when the repaints got excessive. I liked Ironhide as a red pick up. Plus they missed a chance to call it Ultra Magnus. Sky Reign: Then 7, Now 2 - This rose and fell mostly on Sky Lynx. I tried to fit this square peg into a round hole because it was unknown if we'd get a more faithful Sky Lynx in the future. Betatron & Computron: N/A - This was the end of CW line and store shelves were already adding TR merch. I don't know if I'd pick it up if I had the chance. Victorion: N/A - The color scheme really sunk it. If it was like red and gold or something more appealing, I might not have sat on the sidelines until it was gone. Starscream: N/A - I feel Starscream and Darkwind and Dreadwing were more filler pieces than a real combiner. If you were missing a limb or a torso, these POTP entries can help you complete a combiner. Orthia: Then 5, Now 2 - Elita as a jet was a cool idea, but all four fembots being the same really sunk the Battle Angels (my name for the fembots) Abominus: Then 9, Now 7 - This one held up. I still prefer it over the individual bots. Volcanicus: Then 5, Now 2 - The Dinobots as a combiner team was a good idea, but the execution was pitiful. You can focus on loyalty to the G! aesthetic or focus on build a rocking combiner. You can't do both.
I've never liked the CW skylynx mold. the torso where you can see through the center part. They couldnt have spent 2 cents more on plastic there so that when viewed from the sides as it will look solid.....
I once had a combiner wars superion as soon as I took it out the silverbolt’s head’s rubber horns got instantly stuck in the hatch for the head and I don’t have most of him anymore I think didn’t know about costumer services then.
I wouldn't say there's little chance of us getting a new version of this guy, we know he won't be this years haslab because they said it won't be JG1, but I could easily seeing it being the one for next year or 2025
Combiner Wars was alright. Just too many repaints overall. I wish I hadn't gotten the Unite Warriors versions. I thought we wouldn't get the original members over here - ha ha, we did eventually. Oh well. Menasor was a real dropped ball. I get wanting to do something different, but it's thinking too outside the box. Didn't get the new one, though. Partially because I see it as part of a set with the rest of the combiners - Scramble City and all. Partially because I feel like I've been spending too much on TFs overall and it's time to say no. And partially because I have upgrades for UW Menasor, such as hands and feet, the trailer, and his torso fixer PE did.
I think Combiner Wars-era combiners was pretty great. They just kinda got lazy/cheap with the retooling and apparently rushed some things. Though... it really felt like Takara was putting out the finish product while Hasbro was putting out the prototypes. Comparing CW Defensor and Bruticus to their UW releases made me sad. At least CW Defensor eventually got a Deluxe class Groove to replace Rook and make up for the legends scale chest bling one. I don't think CW Bruticus got an accurate Blastoff. Also some of the individual bot legs in CW were just awful and if the bot that made up the body was bad, the combiner wound up bad. Hot Spot was the weak point of Defensor and that weakness carried over to Victorion and I assume MegaEmpress. Then there was the whole Voyager Optimus/Motormaster mold with the messed up leg ratchets which even upgrade kits couldn't really fix. Plus one of the car limb molds was just outright horrible at staying together and the legs would separate all the time. Poor Victorion got hit by a pretty bad Voyager and the bad car limb mold. I think Skylynx and the Cyclonus/Silverbolt Voyagers were the best of the group. Onslaught really seemed cheap and hollow in alt mode but never gave me any issues as a combiner or solo bot. Grimlock was... almost good? Solid bot and Alt mode but he made Volcanicus look really goofy with the way the limbs spread, even with the extra fists as torso filler. I actually liked CW Skylynx but I sold off the entire combiner set when the Commander Class Skylynx was released. I'm currently glancing at CW Menasor w/ PE Upgrade sets and considering selling that off as well now that I got Legacy.
Let go of my full set for $80 a few years ago not knowing what character he was. Got into victory recently and now I really, really wish I could go back…
My first Gift set I bought and the last. This set is awesome. But Jesus CHRIST picking Dezarus is SO weird. One of my Kill Bisons feet just disappeared the other day. Don’t know where it went it’s just gone. I hate everything.
Deathsaurus, Hellbat and Killbison were renamed because Hasbro wasn’t going to allow a toy, even an exclusive one, to have the words "Death", "Kill" or "Hell" in it.
This was a pretty decent set..they just didn't go as far as they could have since it was a quick repurpose of SkyLynx/Superion.

Why the hell did Hasbro make Deathsaurus out of a Sky Lynx for the torso? Could'nt they have made a Leozack out of Silverbolt instead.

The one major disappointment with Combiner Wars is that we never got a Deathcobra to go with this set. Why? We have a perfectly good helicopter mode! Not even a BotCon figure...
I’d argue that a bigger disappointment if that we never got a repaint of POTP Starscream as Leozack to give a more traditional looking Liokaiser torso
I hope we do see a "proper" generations Liokaiser sooner rather than later, but I imagine that it's a lower priority next to the other G1 combiner teams.
dont you hate it when hasbro calls Killbison and Hellbat ironbison and fellbat on earth wars.
(Definitely a while later since you did the FOC team.)
CW Bruticus was the only team I completed back then, a childhood favorite of mine. (And ragged as hell by now.)
Kill bison sounds like a great metal band name,
Always wished Takara did an extensive retool like they did for the Seacons.
Sure Legacy Menasor is better but your looking at double the price you should expect it to be better but also surrfers from the price gouging stuff and mold reuse issues.
your dad is so wholesome!!
It’s the arms that are hips and thighs for me, they followed thrilling 30 with some of the most ass transformers since the g1 toys
This is easily my favorite combiner team character and original design wise, but this set... does not do them justice. I got it because I want to have some version of the team, so I use the deluxe and the Bot Con Leozack as my team for now. They really need a better update though
I still think this would make a great Haslab, but I think they said the next one wont be from Victory
The combination of characters does seem like a freak occurrence.
13:30 Hey!!! Don't talk about combiner hands!! But But Combiner feet? Maybe..
I liked jet Blast-Off (I call her Lift-Off)
Battle Core OP: Then 5, Now 2 - This is when the repaints got excessive.
Orthia: Then 5, Now 2 - Elita as a jet was a cool idea, but all four fembots being the same really sunk the Battle Angels (my name for the fembots)
Abominus: Then 9, Now 7 - This one held up. I still prefer it over the individual bots.
Volcanicus: Then 5, Now 2 - The Dinobots as a combiner team was a good idea, but the execution was pitiful. You can focus on loyalty to the G! aesthetic or focus on build a rocking combiner. You can't do both.
The swords on the skylynx mold attaches to the tail to make it longer it’s my only combiner so I know so ticks about it
I've never liked the CW skylynx mold. the torso where you can see through the center part.
The next video better have "I know you're all here for the hands and feet"!
As a proud parent of Optimus Maximus, Imma need some of those hands'n feet for my boy.
I wouldn't say there's little chance of us getting a new version of this guy, we know he won't be this years haslab because they said it won't be JG1, but I could easily seeing it being the one for next year or 2025
Would've been interesting if Skylynx/Deathsaurus... Was A BOAT
I really want Haslab to do Liokaiser
If you untab the feet on the tanks you can get near limitless forward and backward movement
Maybe nostalgia makes me say it, but I say that Titans Return, Combiner Wars and Power of the Prime were peak for the time
I think Combiner Wars-era combiners was pretty great.
YES, I’ve been catching your videos early!
Let go of my full set for $80 a few years ago not knowing what character he was. Got into victory recently and now I really, really wish I could go back…
The white feet and hands really pop… I went with black for toon accuracy
All the combiners were good besides that Optimus Prime/ Motormaster figure. Otherwise, it was good
My first Gift set I bought and the last. This set is awesome. But Jesus CHRIST picking Dezarus is SO weird. One of my Kill Bisons feet just disappeared the other day. Don’t know where it went it’s just gone. I hate everything.
It wasn't bad per se, but there were lots lots of mold reusing
You sounded talking about the snacks sounded like they’re following you and won’t stop giving you snacks
Deathsaurus, Hellbat and Killbison were renamed because Hasbro wasn’t going to allow a toy, even an exclusive one, to have the words "Death", "Kill" or "Hell" in it.
