2:08:00 Subject: 720p A big reason 720p doesn't really work now but did work well in the PS3 era is the higher density of details in the environment. On PS3 you would get a couple of large bilboards for grass if you're lucky but now, grass is hugely rich with individual blades being rendered. There is so much texture and geometric complexity that at low rez you'll only get massive amounts of shimmery aliasing, or blurry upscaling.
You are right, but he is comparing terrible FSR from 720p to native 720p. I'll give you my example with RE4 Remake. That game on PC doesn't have DLSS, and FSR looks terrible as usual. I was comparing 4k FSR quality to TAA with 80% resolution scale, and to me 80% res looks much better. It's slightly softer but stable in motion so you get consistent PQ. FSR looks ok on screen shots, but in motion looks really bad with terrible shimmering. Both modes perform about the same.
All the talk of MGS: Delta has me nostalgic for Splinter Cell. Those games had incredible use of light and shadow in the early 00s. Imagine what they can do today. I wish we could get remakes of the original trilogy. They might be a little short by modern standards so maybe we could get them in one package or perhaps individually with some expanded or even added levels. I hope MGS Delta sells well so there will be more incentive for SC remakes.
There are remaking Splinter Cell! I still need to play them (outside short session at a mates),i don't know how i missed out on them , i always loved Metal gear solid and Hitman, some of my all time fav games
19:28 I think the fact this console is targeting enthusiasts makes it easier for Sony to market. Because 95% of that group of people already know the benefits. The ones who would want one are already right here watching videos like this one
It probably took a lot of R&D money to create that console, so I wonder how many units they have to sell to make a profit (even if the margins are high). Personally I'm not getting the Pro, because I only play first party titles on Sony consoles, and it doesn't seem like there are many coming.
You understand we are the minority. Like there may be 700k of us out of all the people who own Sony, and a fraction of that buys a Pro. The casuals far surpass our army.
I dont agree with Avowed being okay at the bare minimum 30 FPS. that just says it all. Today people just WANT MORE FPS, so if a game is built at 30 FPS, making some the efforts to add a 40 FPS mode is mandatory to respond this new demand by players...
Why do developers sacrifice image quality? Just lower everything until the image quality is good. Having higher settings is pointless if you can't see it
Honestly, you've got a point there. It's how I play my games on PC after all. That being said, there is _also_ something to be said for having really high fidelity assets and settings, at the cost of resolution or performance. It's kind of a fine line to walk though, and a lot of developers lately seem to be falling from that line or willfully jumping off and counting on FSR2 to save them
I assume it's because at couch distance image quality doesn't matter as much as when you're playing at a desk. I can play a game that's 720p upscaled to 1440p and enjoy my time on the couch but at the desk it just looks like shit unless the game just has a great implementation of DLSS/TSR. Of course it's not optimal at all for a game to rely on upscaling that much but I think that's why devs sacrifice resolution when developing console games.
I hope Astro Bot sells millions, so maybe Sony realize that this is the kind of games that they should be investing on, instead of horrendous GaaS like flopcord
There is such a thing as "house poor" where you are living large but paycheck to paycheck. Intel has been struggling for a while which you can see with the layoffs, and the latest issues likely have incurred significant costs both in the present and in the future. They've been losing ground to AMD, and the reputational hits from all these issues is likely going to make that worse. So yeah, they might have a bunch of assets and have lots of revenue, but they might be running on shoestring budgets and low profits or even deficits.
Totally agree with John about 40fps. I often lock my fps to 40, whack everything to max, sometimes use DLAA if I can afford it (on a 4090). It's basically 1/6 Vsync on my 240Hz panel, and with nice motion blur it looks super stable, super smooth. More devs should optimize their games for 40 fps on consoles as more and more 120Hz TVs are being sold, and if it meant dropping the often horribly performing performance modes, they should just focus all their time and effort to 30fps/60Hz and 40fps/120Hz modes.
They're right about the PS5 Pro having limited appeal. The Quality modes of many PS5 games are barely visually distinguishable from the Performance modes, so being able to play a game on Quality at 60 FPS won't be that big of a deal (certainly not for up to $600 USD). Also, raytracing gives a very subtle and difficult to notice visual difference unless it's reflections, so if the Pro can only really handle raytraced shadows, I don't see that providing much value either. I think its machine learning capabilities will be the biggest factor.
I am OK if they do not use raytracing in MGS 3. Because without it, there should be no question with them getting to 4K/60, which means that it’ll look sharp and solid. Which we are getting very little of this generation. Raytracing has been very underwhelming except for one or two games this generation. Metro being one of them. Which reached high resolutions and used full scene ray tracing, which is absolutely amazing and I wish they would share their techniques with the rest of the world.
2:03:17 This. People need to stop sleeping on a 40 fps cap for those really graphically intensive single player games. Feels great with Reflex enabled on a gamepad. VRR with LFC in an approx 80hz container and you get much more consistent frame times and a lower power bill to boot.
“Graphically intensive” is superficial and doesn’t matter. Every technological quantity in console games has increased over the decades, except framerate which has overall decreased (60fps always, until it was thrown out in 90’s and then remained spotty for decades up to today).
It’s absolutely going to be live service everywhere to ensure SP isn’t getting in the way of MTX, just look at how they treated GTA V SP they stopped adding the new weapons and vehicles to it when they realized people would get them there instead of spending real money for them in Online, it’s also a reason they never added new story DLC so anything new was locked behind Online and it’s numerous money gates
About PS5 pro, they should release upgrade patches day-one for all PS Studios releases. Even simple tweaks like unlocking 4K + 60FPS + already implemented RT features that we can play without weird modes to choose. New hardware can be cool but we don't have time to wait another pale 2 years to see some upgraded new games worth play - That's pointless.
@@palaczythis is now confirmed. PS5 Pro will double frame rates of games like Last of Us Remakes, Demon Souls, and they also used FF Rebirth as an example of benefits. GT7 now has raytracing reflections in races instead of replays only! Not to mention improvements to VR2…
I like the idea of testing a game on 5 different specced computers and it gets a score based on how many of the 5 it can produce acceptable (numbers TBD) performance/imagequality. This game gets a 1 Rig out 5 because it only ran acceptably on the 4090 machine or somethin. Hard part would be deciding what the 5 representative machines were and when to update them, and what is 'acceptable' performance. Though obviously that caters towards lower specced games. Maybe the score is a Bronze 5 out of 5 because it runs well across all machines but isn't very ambitious and another is a Gold 3/5 because the lower machines are out but it strives for more. This is the problem with these quantitative things, always edge cases.
Games should not be struggling on consoles. Given that for the vast majority, the gameplay is no more complex than we’ve had for 20-30 years, it’s just developers pushing graphics just a bit too far. If they just scaled back a tad we’d have so much more stable 60fps games but with 80%+ of the image quality
@@yomamasohot6411 The Demon's Souls remake runs at 60fps on the PS5 and still looks better on a technical level than basically every other game on the console. It’s really absurd and stunning to see here. John himself made the “60fps has always mattered” video, of course about an excellent classic from 1994 (Daytona USA). 30fps is a lowest common denominator cop out: pointless superficial “technology” for superficial gamers. It’s a shame to see excuses for 30fps given by people who know full-well that older weaker systems had 60fps games with “primitive” graphics (compared to today) and it was great and more than good enough. We don’t need more pixels or more reflections or finer shadows. 30fps ‘quality’ is for gawking at “I Paid Money For New Hardware”, not for playing games.

I think one marketing strategy Sony could follow for the PS5 professional is to go ahead and make the review standards before games are approved on the store stricter requiring better image quality. That way they could both address the current complaints around IQ and at the same time show how new games coming to the pro would have significantly better graphics than the amateur due to the IQ requirements. That would please people who don’t care that much about graphics and don’t want to spend another $600 just to have better IQ while at the same time making a case for those that do care about graphics to upgrade.
Re: SH2. In the original game, other than the final fight, Pyramid Head always showed up unceremoniously in mundane locations. In fact, unlike SH1 and SH3, the second game did not have very obvious boss rooms; it made you fight bosses in mundane rooms. It was obviously deliberate. It's scarier to encounter Pyramid Head in a normal place than in a designated boss arena, since you then become afraid of normal places. I understand that Tom and Oliver aren't big SH fans - and that's fine - but they'd probably be better off not making these kinds of judgements if they don't understand the original work.

haven't owned a PS5 and not planning to, but i'm also an incredibly happy Dualsense user on PC. We've come far since the day of the Sixaxis when PCs would need third party apps to have the controllers even workable. You'll genuinely be surprised how well the Dualsense is integrated into the PC space these days. A small but ever growing number of games support DS5 specific features (all the big console PC ports tend to) and even most indie games have at least basic compatibility with this controller. I'm using its gyro to emulate the Wii mote pointer in Dolphin! For most older games you'll get by just fine using methods like Steam Input and for very very rare occasions you'll still have DS4Windows to fall back on. But i can count the number of times i've had to use that tool on a single hand. I can only recommend the Dualsense for any PC player and would love for Microsoft to finally bring some real additions to their controllers for the first time in over a decade. (The lack of gryo at this point is truly shameful.)

I got the PS4 Pro and I can tell you that it wasn't worth it. There were very few games that would actually increase the frame rate from the base model. If games aren't going to look as great and run as smooth as Horizon Forbidden West then PS5 Pro is a waste.
"It does not look good anymore" -- John Linneman (2:10:00) I second that. I rather have "native checkerboard upscaling" than FSR or DLSS. Just can't stand looking at some smeary / pixelated mess anymore.
1:50:25 Xbox's hypothetical early release into next gen still doesn't make sense to me though? Releasing their new mainline console approx 2yrs early (at most) will just see short term benefit of being the most powerful console... but will see longer term issues with it being the obvious _weakest_ console for the remainder of the next gen when the PS6 releases and then compounded even further with the eventual PS6 Pro aswell. It would be as bad, if not worse than this gen's Series S holding the generation back overall and also holding back 3rd party game releases on the Xbox platform like most recently for example Black Myth. The only new hardware I could _maybe_ see them releasing in 2026 is a new handheld with performance capabilities close enough to their current Series S to make porting easier, then around 2027 or 2028 along side or around PS6 release date their new next gen Xbox console. This makes the most sense to me. Also cutting a console gen short on time also cuts down the value for customers, whats to say if they do it this gen by 2 years, that they won't do it again by 4 years the following gen reducing the consoles life/value even further?? It just erodes trust for the consumer.
I like to think a reporter is asking specific questions to each of the DF members, and their faces in the video thumbnail represent their reactions. “John, Do you think Metal Gear Delta will appease longtime diehard fans?” “Rich, Are you excited for PlayStation 5 Professional?” “Tom, How is that performance mode shaping up in Silent Hill 2?” “Oliver, Besides PC and PS5, what other platform was Black Myth Wukong originally slated to launch on?”

The PS5 disc drive is 120€! (This is north of 130USD!!!!). If they force me to buy that thing for the PS5 pro I really am not sure I will do it. Also, why does the US always get the better prices?

@@xtr.7662 that's really optimistic on that price point. Considering they just raised console prices in Japan. Aren't high end gaming PC's without disc drives for enthusiasts too? I'd say the lack of a disc drive on the PS5 Pro is to keep the cost more attractive and not to scare off potential buyer's..you can always add one later for extra cost and Sony probably have a lot of them they need to move. If the Pro model can do 4k/60fps(using PSSR)without the need to choose either a 30 fps fidelity mode, 60fps lower resolution performance mode or a balance 40fps mode it will sell handsomely

A big reason 720p doesn't really work now but did work well in the PS3 era is the higher density of details in the environment.
Most screens in the PS3 era were 480p, 720p or occasionally 1080p. So 720p was more like 1440p on a 4k screen today

It's kind of a fine line to walk though, and a lot of developers lately seem to be falling from that line or willfully jumping off and counting on FSR2 to save them
A mix is probably best
I assume it's because at couch distance image quality doesn't matter as much as when you're playing at a desk. I can play a game that's 720p upscaled to 1440p and enjoy my time on the couch but at the desk it just looks like shit unless the game just has a great implementation of DLSS/TSR. Of course it's not optimal at all for a game to rely on upscaling that much but I think that's why devs sacrifice resolution when developing console games.
100% agree.
"4K Medium" is infinitely better looking than "1080p Ultra".
I hope Astro Bot sells millions, so maybe Sony realize that this is the kind of games that they should be investing on, instead of horrendous GaaS like flopcord

Intel struggling financially is an hilarious statement
40 is immensely better than 30 fps, 100%. But 60 is still nice when feasible, and a must for multiplayer games
@@PositionOffsetGaming oh yeah, excluding MP games and MP modes in SP games, ofc.
40 fps and 60 fps for heavy titles; 60 fps and 120 fps for lighter esport titles.
You don't want to use vsync at 40fps. On PC better use VRR for lower input lag.

Complaining about developers pushing graphics too far under a DF video is certainly a choice😂

Doesn't PS cut each console gen short by releasing their pro versions?

If they force me to buy that thing for the PS5 pro I really am not sure I will do it.
Also, why does the US always get the better prices?
Because the US prices don't include tax and/or VAT.
Because the US doesn’t charge high import tariffs on those kind of products
@@gothpunkboy89 and tax isn't 100%
Oliver hitting all the right notes in his comments
The ps5 pro will probably be at a price that most gamers would not want to cross. If i have to pay 800-900$ for a console,i will stretch the budget to pick up a pc instead.
It will be 599 for the 1tb no disk drive and 699 for the 2tb possibly with the disk drive
@@xtr.7662 no way. then everyone would buy the 699 one
@@GTA6isWoke thats what they want upsell but still offer an affordable version
@@xtr.7662 700 for a console would be kinda crazy though. You add 80 for subscription. Buy a few games and it’s 1k already
@@xtr.7662 that's really optimistic on that price point. Considering they just raised console prices in Japan. Sony is not trying to take a loss on consoles anymore. $649 at the least, and the only difference will be with disc drive and without disc drive. Pro consoles are a niche market I don't see them making that many sku's.
John, in regards to image quality and 4k resolution being a selling point, it will be a selling this time because resolutions have dropped so low.
