I took a writing course and my professor had us do ~10 minutes of freewriting in class, writing about anything and writing without fear of judgment, as nobody else would read them. I suggest reading Peter Elbow's piece on freewriting too! Also, I definitely agree with the idea that even if you don't think you have "a thousand thoughts whizzing through your head" you can even write about how you feel like you have nothing to write about.
I also rarely reread my journals because I don't really scrutinize them after, it's more of an in-the-moment relief/therapy. Occasionally I'll look back at them and see if there's been any growth or just to empathize with the multiple stages of myself.

My tutor told me about this during my second year of university. I was going through a really tough patch with anxiety and depression, my creative work was suffering and I didn't know how to break out of it. My tutor explained this method to me and it helped me to process any negativity before my day begins so that I could separate it from my creative work!

I write for school and for work, and sometimes I forget to write for myself. But whenever my head gets messy and I don't know how/why I feel a certain way, I let my stream of conscious write and I feel so much better. Totally understand how good you can feel if you start your day this way.

I just started including a similar practice into my morning routine! I wake up and roll around on my yoga mat and do silent meditation first, then I set a timer for 5 minutes and scribble all my thoughts down in my journal. I’m gonna try journaling first thing when I wake up and see what impact it has on my meditation. Thank you for videos like this Amy, you’re a breath of fresh air

Even as I was scrolling through all your old videos to get here (which I need to revist as well because I still find value in your words), I cant believe how much has happened between the time you dropped those videos and now. Omggg I'm so glad you brought attention to this! I actually do this morning pages at night... so night-pages? LOL But I definitely second that this journaling routine has significantly help maintain a healthy mind.
It is also a fantastic way for you to vent and rant when you don't have anyone to talk to or you just don't want to bombard people with your thoughts. Another plus is that, most of the times, when I am venting, I end up with a positive outlook/ solution to it.

First off, Amy, your eyebrows are amazing. Second, I’ve journaled my thoughts, too, and typically, they consist of negative and toxic thoughts and I’ve always felt somewhat ashamed of it because they were so negative, but your reassurance that it’s completely normal makes me feel better! And third, I can’t handwrite my thoughts either. I, like you, have too many racing thoughts and the only way I can keep up with it is if I type it lol But anyways, thank you so much for sharing this activity(?)/practice(?). 💜

Aww Amy! I'm so excited to try this practice together! ❤ 100% can relate to having numerous thoughts prior to bed and LOTS OF ANXIETY - not a very pleasant thing. There are some moments when the thought is a positive and insightful one but other times, I have many worries. I am thinking of either writing it on a piece of scratch paper so I can literally trash it afterwards without review. Thing is I like to be a perfectionist so if I were to review my thoughts, I would probably be very judgemental of myself/writing. Or I might just do in the notes section of my phone so I can do it every morning. Once school starts up again (holy shoots I am entering college!!), I'll do it during my morning commute. Hawaii has pretty bad traffic especially to town so it'll be a perfect way to pass time also. 😄
