A friend of mine was telling me the story of one of his times playing Battletech full on roleplay mode, on a colonized world and both mechs were completely disarmed, both cockpits were smashed open, they wound up grappling or something and ended up pretty much cockpit to cockpit when he took his next tern and made an inquiry as to whether his pilot has a sidearm or not and whether he can use it or not, it was established that he did and he could, so he shot the enemy pilot.

There is literally a Mechwarrior RPG. But it hasn't had a rules update in _forever._ Edit: I was wrong, the most recent version is Mechwarrior: Destiny. Good shit.
Goddamn this guy has the vocabulary of Shakespeare coupled with the gift of the gab of a bonafide New York car salesman and the delivery and irreverence of the late George Carlin. A dangerous combination, and yes...Subscribed!
I played MechAssault religiously when i was a kid. I'll always remember the commander shouting "Don't waste your ammo! Pretend that those poor bloody infantry are bugs and step on 'em!"
+TacoWrath MechAssault gets a lot of shit from Battletech purists, but I personally think it's superb, for an Arcade-style action title. One of the better games on XBox.
I've been a massive MechWarrior/BattleTech fan since my childhood, and this sir, was an awesome video to watch. Thank you for this, this definitely needed to be said and I hope this gets more people into the franchise. Respect!
The problem with something becoming very popular is that it tends to be ruined either by a political agenda or by corporate greed. It fucking sucks man.
One fun thing to do with the classic 16 bit Battletech game, load it into an emulator (I know, I know...) and set the 2nd controller commands and the 1st controller both to the same xbox 360 controller (or whatever dual stick option you may have.) Playing the game in 2 player mode, pilot and gunner, but having the controls set up to where you actually have full control of your mech.. now that's some good 16 bit Battletech. I mean, it's not what you would consider sim and it pretty much turns it into a dual stick shooter.. but... fun?
I'd plug the Tex Talks that were released after this video, full feature length movies of lore and humor with a voice cultivated by years of whisky and cigars.
Razorfist, I wanted to say thank you. I saw this video a couple of months back and it just reminded me of how much fun my friends and I had in the mid 80's when we aged out of Car Wars and found BattleTech. This past weekend my 10 year old son and I battled it out lance on lance, little turkey got behind my Enforcer with his Hunchback. Lot's of fun, lots of dad-son time. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm that this game was still out there and still great.
I don't know why but the thought of Yngwie Malmsteen piloting a mech just popped into my head. He jumps into his mech, screams "Time to unleash the fooking FURY!", makes his mech run out all guns blazing only to instantly wreck it by running top speed into a surprisingly sturdy street light. Time to revisit my psychiatrist, I guess.
+starwarsfan117 Well, if it's the tabletop game you get into, there's actually an online, computer-based version of the game that's free, called 'MegaMek'. It's basically a full simulation of the tabletop game with online functionality. megamek.info/ Pretty good for keeping tabletop or role-playing campaigns going across state lines. There's also a massively multiplayer online variant called MegaMekNET, but I haven't given it a spin yet.
starwarsfan117 Well, the role-playing game is its own thing. Think of the tabletop game as a _very_ deep pen & paper combat system for it. Basically, you _can_ play the RPG _without_ the tabletop game, but the tabletop game _greatly_ enriches the experience. So, essentially, you would be playing the RPG - over email or whatever, like anyone who role-plays with people overseas - and when it came time to strap your characters into their mechs / fighter jets / tanks / whatever, you could both just sign into MegaMek and play it in real time. It's very convenient.
+The Rageaholic how connected are the two? because if I did something in the RPG and it connected with the table top, I'd probably stop perusing female relationships. no not really.
+starwarsfan117 The RPG directly affects the tabletop, because depending on the skill of your pilot (who you're roleplaying as, if you connect it with the RPG) your mech will perform better. At certain times, you have to perform maneuvers that require expert gunnery or piloting skills, and at others, your mech takes physical damage and needs to eject. Your skill level in the Mechwarrior RPG affects whether or not to excel - or even _survive_ - any of those activities. And, obviously, accomplishing mission increases your character's experience points.
+The Rageaholic Just out of curiosity, would you ever consider doing a similar video on Cyberpunk 2020 by Mike Pondsmith? With the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, I think it would be most appropriate, at least IMO, to review and/or do a retrospective on the Pen & Paper RPG leading up to the video game.
the thing that seperates battletech from all the other mech shows/sims/games is that the mechs themselves are actually realistic in operation and combat
Worth noting: Whereas weaboo mechs act and look like their girly teen spiky haired ladyboy soulbound pilots, jumping around with power of naruto and posessing durability of soiled schoolgirl panties. Battlemechs are fucking machines! Tons of weight, clad in armor, lumbering platforms of destruction, which dominate the battlefields - and feel like warmachines, instead of feeling like a pretty piece of cosplay for an underage Armored Core fanboy.
Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) Dude, the only Japanese mech game which had solid badass warmachines duking it out, was Ring of Red World War 2 style colossi hurling battleship grade rounds at each others, lumbering slowly from kilometers afar.
+Yuri PRIME I'm just here to say that I love Mech Warrior, Battle Tech, and Armored Core. As far as video games go- Mech Warrior = Tanks Armored Core = Jet Fighters They're both good, and neither one is suffering from "Unicorn Gundam" syndrome.
I would add that the MegaMek software allows for automation of the game rules, while MekHQ allows you design an entire campaign. I played on a trip a few years ago to pass the time and it felt as authentic as the pen and paper.
Also Mechwarrior Living Legends has become active again, both in playerbase and development. Time to ditch MWO. MWLL is a mixed arms multiplayer mod for Crysis Wars featuring Mech's, tanks of all flavors, jets, VTOLs, and power armor, with a bit of a counter strike esque match economy sprinkled on top.
Yeah, the dev team was forced to drop the project in 2012 when MWO slapped with with a cease and desist, but a new team has started deving it again. A youtuber named Shivaxi made a video about it with a link to the all in one download (mod + free crysis wars)
My familiarity with Battletech begins and ends with Mechwarrior 2, one of the couple of free games that came packaged with the first PC my family ever bought back in the days of Windows 95. Man was that a rude awakening, going from using a mere directional pad and two, three, maybe even four buttons for standard 2D platforming romps to getting fucking owned within a 3D warzone while trying to figure out which key on the keyboard was the start running button. Shit I didn't even know you could customize the mechs I just picked one with its preset layout and hoped for the best (favoring anything that shot those plasma bursts). I was fucking terrible at it but damn if it wasn't one hell of a good time regardless.....and I still can't get enough of that female computer voice....
If you have a version that runs on DOS you can still play it using Dosbox. These polygonal graphics look very artistic and comics like these days. Very artistic I would say.
During this pandemic, you may like to buy "Battletech A Game Of Armored Combat" the board game, revamped in 2018. It has 8 plastic well sculpted mechs. And none are junk mechs, they are top notch war machines. If you want some extra map and two more plastic mechs, you may get the beginner box. And it seems soon there will be the expansion clan invasion. Playing a mission could take a few days, so you will need a dedicated table to play. You may even play solo. Handle all mechs. Lots of fun with so many rules that bring realism.
subbed! This was in fact one of the finest, most entertaining youtube videos I have ever seen. Thank you for your brilliant breakdown of one of the finest game systems/world ever created.
You hear that, Razorfist? It's the howling of dozens of fanfucks who are demanding your execution for insulting their precious Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Eh, fuck'em. NGE's overhyped anyways and what it did is just a retread of works like Space Runaway Ideon, Mazinger Z and the like. Folks who said that NGE is deep are folks who never watched mecha prior to NGE.
Sabatheus haha I love razor but that is an impressive fail if I ever saw one. Names the wrong bomber and shows the wrong bomber. The right answer was the B-29
He also got a pretty important piece of lore wrong. It was Richard Cameron who was assassinated by the Stefan Amaris, not Richard Davion. All of the First Lords of the Star League were Camerons. it's also a bit inaccurate to describe the Succession Wars as "increasingly costly" - most of the damage to infrastructure, loss of technology, and jaw-dropping atrocities happened during the first two Succession Wars. The third one may have been the longest, but the fighting was on a much smaller scale. And the fourth one was a skirmish compared to the other three.
they had a Battletech game center in Vegas in the '90s. it was cool as hell with individual cockpits and a 1/8th scale Madcat in the lobby. They need to bring back Mechwarrior!
HBS did great with Shadowrun, with each iteration they made improvements that the fans requested. I hope the Mech Warrior game is just as good or even better than Shadowrun.
My son watches Rageaholic all of the time. He loves the no-nonsense way the Rage-ster delivers his topic. I thought he was ok... better some times than others. But, now I think I'll pay him some more attention!I have been a MechWarrior since the board game / RPG in the late '80s. I hated D&D and AD&D. They were way too random for me. Then came Robotech with it's futuristic technology and transforming Veritech fighters! Loved the shit out of it! I just didn't get to play much as the people I gamed with all got left behind as I moved around in my career as an Army Infantryman. Well... I move to a new duty station and here's one of my young troops introducing me to Battletech! I, being in my young to mid 20s, see giant battle mechs... rich back-story... intrigue, in-fighting, treachery... and blast 'em to hell and gone action: I was hooked. Did the board games until I bought my first PC in 2000. I was stationed in Hawaii. Found me my first MechWarrior title and a decent flight cyclic and I was lost in space. I gamed in the campaigns, on-line, when ever, where ever I could. I still own all of the titles I could find all of the way up through MechWarrior 4, Vengeance, & Mercenaries.I still recall the good ol' days of board gaming with a tricked-out WarHammer Mech. If I could re-create some of those old battles with the MW4/Mercenaries game system in my trusty ol' 'Hammer, my better half would probably have to smack me up side the head and drag me to the dinner table. The Mech battles we had were a blast. Don't get me wrong: I loved being an Army Infantryman. But, if I could have had me a BattleMech in real life... better yet, a full lance at my command... America just wouldn't have any terrorists dogging us like a bunch of playground jackanapes! Shit... if I could have me a 'Mech now... I'd forgo my retirement and serve for free! Just as long as they fed me and pulled proper maintenance on my 'Mech... and loaded me up with all of the ammo I could shoot!
Epic, gotta say the first 10 seconds I was about to move on "nope, not gonna waste 15 minutes of my life", but I was happily rewarded once I got past the aviators and initial tone of voice lol now I wanna see what else you've reviewed! Well done sir, well done.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed watching this. Superbly well done, Rageaholic. As a nearly 25-year Battletech player, I can honestly say you did this intro to the games the justice it deserved. BRAVO!!!
Thanks Razor, for carrying the battletech torch all these years. Truly remarkable the pluck of this game. Just getting back into it after a looong hiatus. Printing some 10mm scale mechs for 10mm scale Alpha Strike. Most fun I've had painting models in a long, long time. GW models have become far too over-designed (and expensive!).
I went to a big game convention in Baltimore in 1985, and Battletech was one of the biggest things there! FASA even had a huge diorama with dozens of Mech robots from the Japanese model kits in mid battle on it!
Once I can scrounge up a spare $50 I'll drop some cash into the Battletech you recommended. This game does look ridiculously fun and far cheaper than Warhammer 40k. But man I'd kill to have a Mechwarrior/Battletech RPG as expansive as Mass Effect which would allow me to either run around on foot in First person and also have control over a mecha which I can pilot in First Person. Just keep it away from the Kinect because that killed Steel Battalion and this thing will be amazing.
***** They need to bring back specialized controllers and joysticks for certain games. I mean if they're going to jam random plastic figures into 100 dollar boxes for special editions that end up taking up space and gathering dust in your house. Then sell us a specialized controller designed exclusively for your game. Hawken and Mechwarrior online should look into that lol

Just bought the recommended box set. Played this game 2-3 times waaaaay back in the 1980s and 90s, but usually had my head up my ass with Battletech's emaciated bastard half-sibling series from the FASA family - Renegade Legions. Thanks for the tip on which edition boxed set NOT to buy, these things are still floating around depending on where you buy from. Great tip, great video. :D

If you guys haven't tried HBS BattleTech for PC, I highly recommend it. Very similar to the table top, with some video game aspects, but it doesn't stray too far from the spirit of BattleTech.
I came from the 80's and the pen and paper turn-based strategy version of the game, and never really got into the whole simulator first-person-shooter-esque series of Mechwarrior games. I actually got to run in one of the aforementioned 'virtual pods'. It was interesting, but it was also understood that this was technology that was too expensive for what they were doing with it, and it hasn't been until recent days that we've actually developed the technology to make something like that practical. Personally, what I like to do is set up succession wars era conflicts. No Clan Cheater Tech with their godlike ER PPC's and double heat sinks. Classic 3025 tech, where seeing a Marauder is probably the last thing you will ever see unless you're in an Atlas. Where overheating is a thing which can actually be POSSIBLE (yea, radical concept here...), ammo explosions are an insta-gib and the machine gun ammo most mechs stored was little more than a suicide device waiting to be set off which any pro pilot whose gone on more than one mission instantly ejects before it can be used to blow him to kingdom come. Personally, what I'd love to see is the team that did the SFX for the never to be sufficiently reviled Michael Bay rendition of the Transformers movies apologize to everyone for pissing on their childhood by doing the mechs for a Succession Wars movie trilogy. As long as they issue Michael Bay a restraining order. Maybe they can convince Joss to do it.
That was so epic to read. Thx for that. The tech either you like it or hate it. I liked the maximum tech experimental construction options and ECM, Probes. never used narc beacons favored the artemis. Pft marauder give me a grasshoper and i slice away. But not that one with the srm2. Lasers only. Have a nice weekend
The first time I ever engaged in anything related to Battletech was when playing the Mechassault games, underrated xbox classics with which I would love to see a followup.
+dillamadukes21 He lacks (relatively) a primary focus/niche like Angry Joe (video games) or Jeremy Jahns (movies), opting instead to split his attention rather evenly among multiple subjects. He's a jack of all trades, and popular in none.
MWO has seen a massive increase in quality since Piranha Games split from IGP, not sure when's the last time you've played it, but after the split they've introduced quirks, which has helped balance all the sub-par IS mechs, they've been rebuilding some of the maps (river city and forest colony are massive now), trying to information warfare an important element, and are working on the next phase of faction warfare, like scouting missions (4v4 battles before a big one occurs), bonuses for capturing certain planets and overall improving whatever needs improving. It's true that a lot of people don't agree with how Piranha's been balancing clan mechs (which you yourself described as a power grab to milk cash from fans) but they've been working hard on making the game enjoyable and balanced no matter what mech and layout you use as well as introducing lots of new mechs (clan IICs, warhammer, archer, rifleman marauder and so on) I've honestly been enjoying the game since somewhat early beta, but now there's a lot more to it that makes it more enjoyable for people that didn't like it in the past.

I Really liked the part where you explained The lore of Battletech, As someone who hadn't heard of it you got me interested. I'd love to see more video's like this about other game's. great video !
I've played Battletech, Mechwarrior, the CCG, some of the PC games, the Mechwarrior Dark Age CMG, played in a Battletech centre, and backed the new HBS game, and I never tire of the Battletech setting. Its great to see some attention given to the Battletech lore, as its one of the great parts of the IP that a lot of people overlook. Hopefully the new game will fully embrace the spirit of the original source material, and it should, given the involvement of Jordan Weisman and Mitch Gitelman, two of the original FASA Battletech devs.
+Nerzenjäger - I disagree. The 10-sided die always seemed needlessly tacked on. Thank Lemmy 'A Time of War' removed it. I also think the first three editions of MechWarrior threw up a few too many roadblocks for actually attaching the RPG to the miniatures experience. 4th Edition also fixes that, which I appreciate.
Ya, well, we agree to disagree. Never found it hard to play them together, although I always found the RPG to be its own thing anyway. The introduction of the clans was horribly implemented and 3e and 4e are bloated beyond measure. They succeeded on the synergy with the tabletop on 4e - I'll give you that.
+Nerzenjäger I can't agree or disagree. MW2nd's definite strengths were the easy learning curve and fast character generation, but it did suffer from having some really bad holes in the mechanics that required the expansion to even begin to help to rectify. One such problem being clearly stating you don't use the "Throwing Weapons" skill to toss a grenade, but it never actually tells you what to use. That said, I chose it over Mechwarrior 3rd edition for years, because MW3rd was a little too much RPG to be treated like a companion product if your players weren't already well versed in the game, and poor placement of very important (Wounds) tables made it a bit tough to use, besides relying on D10s "Just because", but as a stand-alone, it felt far more realistic than any MechWarrior RPG system to date. Again, a Time of War has some really nice parts, and it also suffers in others. But in the end, like The Rageaholic says, It's all MechWarrior, and getting the chance to live the setting (Especially since we'd been left high-and-dry for Battletech stories outside of e-pub short stories for the past decade-and-some) is a treat.
One of the interesting things about Battletech from a realism standpoint is how outrageously light they are for their size. To give you an idea. An M1 Abrams main battle tank is around 60 TONS with modern armor. For those who know Battletech... The Atlas is one of the heaviest mechs of the setting at 100 tons. An M1 Abrams? It's the size of the Atlas' foot. Not even including the ankle. Speaking of size that's one of the biggest problems with Mechwarrior Online. The medium and light mechs are too big relative to the size of heavies and assaults. So you end up with mechs that are too large, and not quite fast enough to avoid being ripped to shreds. So the mediums end up becoming hard to use in matches. Which is one thimble full of the fucking ocean of problems that game has had and still contends with.
One word Endosteel. The whole idea is that Battletech is set in the future. Hence the lighter materials. People fail to use the proper prospective when applying comparisons.
Jesse Hancock except that not every mech is equipped with endosteel. And even then the TOTAL weight that can be put on a mech chassis is 60 tons (depending on class, in just using 60 for an example) even with the endo steel. So no, the weight in battletech has always been unrealistic no mattrr what weak argument you try to use to justify it. They seriously just need increase the tonnage by like a multiple of 5, then things would at least be believable.
This was a suggested video watching a sidestrafe video. God damn son you're a high energy heavy metal mechwarrior guru. I love it! Going to take the dive into the lore and I'm definitely checking out the new Battletech.
Eh, MWO's a bucketload of fun, and that's as someone who started the games at MW2 and MC. It certainly has the visual and sound design to match, and honestly despite the clusterfuck of clan bullshit it's the closest the MechWarrior series got to balanced in recent memory.
+The Rageaholic As former player of Call of Mechwarrior, I can attest to Razor's arguments. Can't wait until 2017 when BATTLETECH gets here and MWO's playerbase will experience the greatest exodus since Moses(or Kerensky).
+Man With A Stick Mechwarrior: Online is an average multiplayer tank shooter wearing battletech's skin. And if you're into competitive tank shooters, then yeah MW:O is exactly that, go have fun. But I'm with rage on this one. I want a story. I want characters, and music, and my own lance. I can only waddle along with the rest of my team, peak from hillsides, and scamper away so many times. I can only grind the same goddamn 12 v 12 matches for so long. Mechwarrior Online looks real pretty, but Harebrained's Battletech is where it's at.
been playing battletech/mechwarrior since the late 1980s. I own virtually every book, suppliment, boxed set, novel, pc game, etc... it's been my single favorite escape from reality since gradeschool, and one of the finest ever developed. this is about as good a general overview as one could possibly get of the series! #FMWO, #SUCCESSIONWARSFORLIFE
Lmao, major points for knowing about Burst Angel. That was one of my first mecha animes that got me into mecha as a whole. Hasn’t aged as well as most, but still a lovely little series.
I know I did and I got my Jacket and all that also already! I've been playing since Sega Genesis days... Which led me to the tabletop version at my local college game club... I bought my first PC just so I could play MechCommander, lol...
Although lately, I have been more towards Gundam and Macross as far as mechs go, but my start has always been Mechwarrior. I have played the early games and saw the animated show based on it, forgot what it was called. What can I say, I have always liked the more military or tank like mechs and how they are used.
For me the ultimate Battletech game would be a mix of HBS's Battletech and something akin to Mount & Blade. Starting off as either a simple mechwarrior or a lance captain and working your way up to creating your own minor house/nation in the Periphery.
+Corpsealot Your not complaining, that is a first, mark the day Corpsealot ; the Steve Shives of videos game, stopped bitching for one comment. I need to screen shot this....... or wait someone might have hacked his account and actually started acting like a human.

The kicker is that we are a merc group with a big enemy, the Capellon Conference and they have sent a certain warrior house that is used to well conduct perges. But thanks to Comstar we got the jump on them lol.
As an anime fan, I must say, I applaud you for calling out Evangelion for the pile of shit that it is. Of course, I'm a part of the camp that claims the EVA Units aren't really Robots. On a related note, if you want some GOOD Mecha anime that doesn't suck, your best bet lies in the best decade of anime: the 80s! Specifically... Armored Trooper VOTOMs Fang of the Sun Dougram SPT-Layzner Aura Battler Dunbine Galactic Drifter Vifam Space Runaway Ideon Combat Mecha Xabungle Giant Robo: The Animation And of course...UC Gundam (Gundam 0079, Zeta Gundam, Char's Counterattack) Mind you, a lot of these shows aren't available in the U.S., so you're gonna have to track 'em down by "Other Means."
+ALJustice0 Even so...it's still Evangelion. As for the second part of your statement, I went for Mecha anime that are more in line with Battletech than the Go Nagai Super Robot Genre.
+Natendowii You want a good comparison on giving mecha "weight" how about the one Gundam product that actually did that. Im talking about the live action move that was done, those suits had WEIGHT.
+The Rageaholic Right on. To address the content of the video directly: As a massive simulator nerd and someone who's looking to get into tabletop gaming, this definitely seems like it's worth a look. Seems like the best of both worlds.
BattleTech/Mechwarrior...sadly, my experience has been limited to a handful of games: Mechwarrior 2 and its Mercenaries expansion (I own both, and have the latter on DOSbox), the base game of Mechwarrior 3, and Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance--the latter two of which no longer function properly. On the subject of Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, I've been wondering whether I could get a patch to work on DOSbox, since the game is (to steal one of your expressions) "buggier than Hannah Minx's pantyliners". Phantom weight, hit registration problems, random mission failures in scenarios that SHOULD have succeeded (as happened to me during the mission "Brother's Keeper"). All these issues just barely keep towards the bottom of my top 20 list. And, of course, this is ignoring MechAssault and its sequel (fun games, I'll admit, but also dumbed down and thus don't count). I must be missing a LOT...
While there were a few discrepancies here and there, this was by far the best presented review of Battletech I've ever seen. There are a lot of men and women who are very invested in this franchise, but not a whole lot of them that can present that passion in a way that is entertaining to take in. Hell, I think I would fall short of my own expectations. As for the Metal Battletech Cartoon intro? This COMPLETELY slipped under my radar, even though the cartoon was my very first exposure to the franchise. Thank you for including it.
Oh god. I don't want to be that guy but the cockpit was from a b29, you said it was a B2, and the picture showed a b52. I'm sorry, I don't want to be that guy, but I have to. Please don't hate me.

***** oh certainly, but MS have been saying they'll support PC more for years with nothing to so for it. I hope the new Battletech is going to be good, there's so much potential for the IP, and as you me mentioned a detailed RPG would be fantastic.

There is literally a Mechwarrior RPG. But it hasn't had a rules update in _forever._
Edit: I was wrong, the most recent version is Mechwarrior: Destiny. Good shit.

I played MechAssault religiously when i was a kid. I'll always remember the commander shouting "Don't waste your ammo! Pretend that those poor bloody infantry are bugs and step on 'em!"
FUCK YES!!!! I fucking loved MechAssault it was my introduction to one of the coolest and most in depth sci-fi there ever was!
I mean, it's not what you would consider sim and it pretty much turns it into a dual stick shooter.. but... fun?
Did not expect to see you.
pro trick: you can watch series at Flixzone. I've been using it for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Finn Matteo yea, have been using Flixzone} for since december myself :)
What 15 bit Battletech game? Is it for snes?
This is brilliant

Razorfist, I wanted to say thank you. I saw this video a couple of months back and it just reminded me of how much fun my friends and I had in the mid 80's when we aged out of Car Wars and found BattleTech. This past weekend my 10 year old son and I battled it out lance on lance, little turkey got behind my Enforcer with his Hunchback. Lot's of fun, lots of dad-son time. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm that this game was still out there and still great.
Battletech Night with your progeny?
Attaboy.
You sir get a gold star for being a great parent.
I did that on blast corps.
I want to get into this, so fucking bad now, mecha is one of my favorite genres, period.
and I know one guy who shares my love of it...in India.
FUCK
+starwarsfan117 Well, if it's the tabletop game you get into, there's actually an online, computer-based version of the game that's free, called 'MegaMek'. It's basically a full simulation of the tabletop game with online functionality.
megamek.info/
Pretty good for keeping tabletop or role-playing campaigns going across state lines.
Wait... MW4 mercs is freeware? Damn. I'm telling everyone I know now.
Not anymore.
need. more. battletech. videos.
I used this to recruit another viewer. Children of the 80s can't help but enjoy something like battletech.
the thing that seperates battletech from all the other mech shows/sims/games is that the mechs themselves are actually realistic in operation and combat
Seriously dude, I wish you'd cover more Battletech/Mechwarrior stuff.
Worth noting: Whereas weaboo mechs act and look like their girly teen spiky haired ladyboy soulbound pilots, jumping around with power of naruto and posessing durability of soiled schoolgirl panties.
Battlemechs are fucking machines! Tons of weight, clad in armor, lumbering platforms of destruction, which dominate the battlefields - and feel like warmachines, instead of feeling like a pretty piece of cosplay for an underage Armored Core fanboy.
hell yeah screw the stupid animushit. give me a mech warrior who is a fucking badass.
+Yuri PRIME The only Japanese mech game I ever played that didn't have weeb mech designs was Front Mission 3 on the PSX.
Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) Dude, the only Japanese mech game which had solid badass warmachines duking it out, was Ring of Red
World War 2 style colossi hurling battleship grade rounds at each others, lumbering slowly from kilometers afar.
Yuri PRIME Oh yeah. I heard about that one but never got around to playing it, Might have to check it out someday.
+Yuri PRIME I'm just here to say that I love Mech Warrior, Battle Tech, and Armored Core.
As far as video games go-
Mech Warrior = Tanks
Armored Core = Jet Fighters
They're both good, and neither one is suffering from "Unicorn Gundam" syndrome.
I would add that the MegaMek software allows for automation of the game rules, while MekHQ allows you design an entire campaign. I played on a trip a few years ago to pass the time and it felt as authentic as the pen and paper.
MechWarrior 4 will always be held in my heart as one of my favourite games of all time
Battletech has always been my favorite futuristic setting. It's so grittily real.
A new Battletech (tactical RPG) and a new Mechwarrior (first person simulator) is on the way.
Azure Kyuubi is it free?
Yeah, the dev team was forced to drop the project in 2012 when MWO slapped with with a cease and desist, but a new team has started deving it again. A youtuber named Shivaxi made a video about it with a link to the all in one download (mod + free crysis wars)
Azure Kyuubi And I suppose the current developement is not under legal problems?
Not that I know of. Or care. ;)
7 years , Man. And this is Still the best Battletech intro ever on TH-cam. I'm a fan since the 80s , and I watch this once a month! Outstanding work
My familiarity with Battletech begins and ends with Mechwarrior 2, one of the couple of free games that came packaged with the first PC my family ever bought back in the days of Windows 95.
+Terry Jones Her name is : "Bitching Betty" !
Wouldnt have happened to be a 94 IBM Aptiva by any chance would it?

FAN-TASTIC video. This is what I will use to get new people into BattleTech. You sir, are a trip. Look forward to more BattleTech stuff!
And for those who play magic: I'm sure you've heard of Richard Garfield. He designed the Battletech card game as well.
You hear that, Razorfist?
It's the howling of dozens of fanfucks who are demanding your execution for insulting their precious Neon Genesis Evangelion.
But Neon Genesis Evangelion is over rated.
It's decent popcorn fodder. But the title of anime masterpiece goes to AKIRA.
The manga version of Akira is phenomenal. The movie is great but it's more style over substance.
Eh, fuck'em. NGE's overhyped anyways and what it did is just a retread of works like Space Runaway Ideon, Mazinger Z and the like. Folks who said that NGE is deep are folks who never watched mecha prior to NGE.
That's a thing?
2:23 That's a B-52 Stratofortress, brotha.
Sabatheus haha I love razor but that is an impressive fail if I ever saw one. Names the wrong bomber and shows the wrong bomber. The right answer was the B-29
Not to mention that he also meant to say B-29 SuperFortress instead of B-2 Spirit and then showing a B-52 StratoFortress
From the future: it is!
After watching this video I have one question.
HOW THE FUCK DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS GLORIOUSNESS MY WHOLE LIFE?!
GW models have become far too over-designed (and expensive!).
man, this is the finest intro to battletech i ever seen
I went to a big game convention in Baltimore in 1985, and Battletech was one of the biggest things there! FASA even had a huge diorama with dozens of Mech robots from the Japanese model kits in mid battle on it!
I remember getting a 4mb video card at compusa for the family pc, made mw2 run awesome. I loved the nova.
Hell yeah, MW4 even had a big modded upload with bunch of mechs and gameplay improvements!
+Bluemagus - Totally agree. Steel Battalion was... *_almost_* an awesome idea.

I would absolutely KILL for a Mass Effect style Battletech game.
Would it more sensibly be set in the first succession war?

Mechwarrior 2nd Edition was the pinnacle of the RPG-part of the franchise.
Nerzenjäger Hey, it's all MechWarrior, so it's all good. Not a single edition of the game is 'bad'.
Agreed. The current introductory set is fantastic. Thanks for promoting the game.
A mechwarrior RPG, sounds very good.
Jirekianu Battlemechs aren't tall. The Locust was seven meters tall. An Abrams is less than 3 meters tall.
Every BattleMech Pilot thinks their badass till the churches start walking.
Ehhhh. Most Mechwarriors just do there jobs and dont really get a ego. They are more akin to the old Bomber/Fighter pilots of WWII.
Since Games Workshop basically pulled a Blizzard, time to jump ship to Battletech and get immersed in the lore like I’m doing with FF14.
GW pulled a Disney but without the Disney bucks

Eh, MWO's a bucketload of fun, and that's as someone who started the games at MW2 and MC. It certainly has the visual and sound design to match, and honestly despite the clusterfuck of clan bullshit it's the closest the MechWarrior series got to balanced in recent memory.
+Man With A Stick - Keep settling for mediocrity. I appreciate you poisoning the well for the rest of us.
Well, when you put forth such a great argument, sure, man. Peace!
+The Rageaholic As former player of Call of Mechwarrior, I can attest to Razor's arguments. Can't wait until 2017 when BATTLETECH gets here and MWO's playerbase will experience the greatest exodus since Moses(or Kerensky).
+The Rageaholic What mech video game would you recommend?
+Man With A Stick Mechwarrior: Online is an average multiplayer tank shooter wearing battletech's skin. And if you're into competitive tank shooters, then yeah MW:O is exactly that, go have fun. Although lately, I have been more towards Gundam and Macross as far as mechs go, but my start has always been Mechwarrior. I have played the early games and saw the animated show based on it, forgot what it was called. What can I say, I have always liked the more military or tank like mechs and how they are used.
*COMSTAR would like to know your location*
For me the ultimate Battletech game would be a mix of HBS's Battletech and something akin to Mount & Blade. Starting off as either a simple mechwarrior or a lance captain and working your way up to creating your own minor house/nation in the Periphery.
Mechwarrior 2 sucked months of my life away. I am not comlaining.
+Corpsealot You're not alone.
I still have the disc which, at the time, came with my dad's new Matrox something-something GPU. The soundtrack still kicks ass
+Corpsealot I still have 2-4 here and Mech Commander 2
+Genetic Heresy
I see you everywhere.
+Corpsealot Your not complaining, that is a first, mark the day Corpsealot ; the Steve Shives of videos game, stopped bitching for one comment. I need to screen shot this....... or wait someone might have hacked his account and actually started acting like a human.
I'm currently playing a Battletech table top game, we are currently on a planet being evacuated by the magiststry of Canopas.
Armored Trooper VOTOMs
Fang of the Sun Dougram
SPT-Layzner
Aura Battler Dunbine
Galactic Drifter Vifam
Space Runaway Ideon
Combat Mecha Xabungle
Giant Robo: The Animation
And of course...UC Gundam (Gundam 0079, Zeta Gundam, Char's Counterattack)
Mind you, a lot of these shows aren't available in the U.S., so you're gonna have to track 'em down by "Other Means."
MACROSS!

3:55 me again…. Ummm… I feel bad to ask but my curiosity forces me
Did you mean to say B-52 bomber when you showed a picture of it or was the actual B-2 too stealthy to find a decent picture of? :P
+The Man They Call Asher Blame Terran Gell. Actually, don't. I think I actually said the wrong bomber to begin with.
+The Rageaholic Right on. To address the content of the video directly: As a massive simulator nerd and someone who's looking to get into tabletop gaming, this definitely seems like it's worth a look. Seems like the best of both worlds.
+The Rageaholic The cockpit is copied from a b-29, the plane you mentioned is a B-2 stealth bomber, and the pictured bomber is a b-52.
ah, this was the video that busted my Razorfist cherry. After watching every video, this is still one of my favorites. Keep up the good work man!
+zoidburger66 Yeah, I know. *_I_* fucked up while talking... and then *_Terran Gell_* fucked up the picture. It was just a whole bunch of fucked-upedness. You get the point, though. The shit was based on a real plane cockpit.
***** Minor technicality aside, the video was a success. I walked in knowing nothing about the subject matter and I walked out a fresh convert to the battletech franchise. Well-played, razörfist.
zoidburger66 That's what I was going for. Godspeed!
+zoidburger66 Good work, that guy.
Black Knight Legion ready to drop on your order, commander!
3:55 - What anime is that one where the chick's head gets blown off?
Mars of destruction, it's one of the shitiest animes ever though
Thanks!
I think I'll give it a go anyways. Sometimes you need to have really shitty animes to better appreciate just how good the good ones are. Perspective an' all that.
Or you just want to see some blood.
As a very old...(i prefer seasoned) Battletech/Mechwarrior/etc/etc player/fanboy/soldier
The was , BY FAR, the best explanation of the Battletech Universe, BAR NONE!
OUTSTANDING!
It's the damn shame Mexhwarrior Online is nothing. But a shallow cash grab. I hope the IP, gets someone truly worthy to make something new and great.
+Al Valentyn - I've said it before, I'll say it again: Microsoft Studios lacks first-party games. They own MechWarrior, and they're looking to refocus on the PC Market.
I'm not sure I have to explain further.
***** oh certainly, but MS have been saying they'll support PC more for years with nothing to so for it.
I hope the new Battletech is going to be good, there's so much potential for the IP, and as you me mentioned a detailed RPG would be fantastic.
+Al Valentyn It is fun I love it. it got improved highly since the shitty launch. but god damn it is expensive as fuck.
