I will say this though as both a Marik player and a lover of the Awesome -- fluff aside, how *did* the League end up with this as a iconic faction 'mech? According to canon, the League is chronically short of PPCs, to the point where other iconic PPC carriers like the Marauder have had to be refitted with large lasers whenever possible on Marik variants...
Looks like the Awesome is the _reason_ they're short on PPCs. And to be fair, Marauders are bad at heat management, unlike the Awesome with its 28 heat sinks; I'd rather downgrade the MAD's two PPCs than the AWS's three.
i second this opinion, i mean when the variant with 4 ppcs and 6 medium laser is considered a downgraded model you have something special........slow but special
I note that this vid is not included in the Tex Talks BattleTech playlist after he had to rebuild the playlist after the channel got hacked. Makes me wonder if he plans on redoing this vid. I suppose it could simply be that this one got lost in the aftermath...
Hello Tex. The Awesome is one of my favorite Mechs, ever. I have been playing B-Tech since late 1983, when it was Battle Droids. This just gives you an idea of how long I've been around. So, in my mid 20s, I ran into this game being 'play tested' at a Sci-Fi Con and liked it enough to find a copy. When I bought a 1984 copy of the game, it came with a rule book that had Mech Construction Rules in the back pages. And this is where my penchant for re-designing, and re-building Mechs came from, that is still with me to this day. As I said, I loved the Awesome. Partly due to its massive armoring, but also for its hitting power on the battlefield. The ONLY thing that I dis-liked was the penchant for it to over heat from prolonged use of its trio of PPCs. After a few battles where my forces 'took it on the chin' from having not enough firepower per turn of battle, mostly due to built up heat within the Awesome(s) on the field, I decided to 'fix' this problem. Using the Design Rules, I stripped out the three PPCs and the small laser. This alone netted me 22 tons 'to play with', without needing to alter much else on the Mech (yes I know that technically it comes to 21.5 tons, but by stripping off one point of armor from each arm, leg, the center torso, and the 3 portions of the rear armor, yeilded the additional 0.5 tons needed). I then swapped in three Large Lasers for the normally mounted PPCs, and replaced the small laser in the head, with a 4th Large Laser mounted upon the left arm. This 'cost' me 20 tons of weight, leaving 2 tons to spare. So, I added a pair of single Heat Sinks to the Mech as well, boosting it's cooling capacity from 28, up to 30. PPCs generate 10 heat upon each firing, and three of them equal 30 Heat total. Add movement and you get up in the range of 32 heat per turn generated. Subtracting the cooling for 28 Heat Sinks, still leaves up to 4 Heat per combat turn in build up. Which ends up meaning you can't fire that 3rd PPC after about the 2nd triple firing. It could take up to 4 or 5 combat turns to cool the Mech sufficiently to return to the all up triple shot maximum output. Which I saw as being inefficient. So, I exchanged the 3 PPCs and Sm Laser for 4 Lrg Lasers and a pair of Heat Sinks. Large Lasers generate only 8 heat per combat turn each, and thus the Mech's full 'Alpha Strike' would be 32 Heat. This was only 2 heat above the new installed limit of 30, and made the heat build up over time a lesser factor. The Mech could continue to pump out damage for longer periods without excessive heat build up effects. Also, turning off one Lrg Laser for a couple of turns would cool down the Mech relatively faster than what would occur with the PPCs. So, the 4 Lrg Laser Awesome would do more damage over time to the Enemy, over the older design. As for damage in combat. the older Awesome's 3 PPCs would do up to 30 damage per combat turn, provided all hit the target, and all three were fired (which was not always the case as you can see from above). The newer Awesome would pump out up to 32 damage per combat turn, provided all hit the target, and the number of turns were 'alpha strikes' were available was longer. Yes, one can argue that the law of averages would tend to leave off one of the Lrg Lasers, but the same argument can be made for the 3rd PPC as well. So, unless you are a 'numbers geek', the difference wouldn't mean that much on the battlefield. One can argue as to which version is 'best', but I tend to stand by the 4 Lrg Laser version as being tactically superior to the PPC version. I admire your liking for the Awesome, but I felt compelled to offer a Mech design that was superior to the original concept, all be it, only slightly. A side note about the two designs. PPCs can often be hard to locate and obtain for replacement. Whereas Large Lasers are more commonly found and available. Thus making the Mech more profitable, easier to maintain, and as I said, I feel 'better' in combat. The only detriment to the 4 Lrg Laser design, is the load it places upon the Mech's fire control. But that is easily solved with a software patch, readily available throughout the Inner Sphere. Enough from me for now, speaking Frank-ly
That's a great awesome build. I also enjoy the 'new' ER PPC Build and double heat-sinks.. Thank you for your story, it means a lot to hear from the older generation. I came into this game in the 90s, having been born in 1984. It's been a strange odyssey, hasn't it?

It also has one of the most basic and straightforward and yet best upgrade variants after the Clan Invasion. The AWS-9Q. What does it do? 19 double heatsinks, and then the saved tonnage goes into a 4th PPC and a Guardian ECM. It's basically the exact same, only with more heat capacity and 33% more PPC. And it's *still* under 8 million C-Bills.
I think you're forgetting the Flea mech. Yeah, some people forget the horde cause the horde usually randomly explodes when something just knicks the thing.
I used to run with an AWS-8T in MWO. 2 x LRM20 2 x Large Lasers 2 x Medium lasers Sand paper armour, then apply lasers to exposed engine. Same can be said for most Stalker variants, and the CPLT-C1. Other Mechs can also pull it off, but require a more drastic refit. Yes, I've driven a Fafnir with the same weapons loadout. Yes, I pretty much won the match single handedly.

If you have AC2 weapons you can out range it's weapons and have no minimum range to worry about. The Kracken has Ten AC2 ultras that fire twice per round if desired. 40 damage potential per round at any range. Pilot takes a skill test to avoid falling over if higher than 20 damage is done in a round. The Kracken is the way to go. Awesome is cool though. (Tabletop Game RULES)
As much as I'd love a "remaster" of this one, that would open the door to him being nagged to redo most of his current mech videos. Awesome through Catapult.
The map used for the background at the end hit me right in the nostalgia. It was included in the base box set I bought to get started in B-Tech and was the only map I owned for a couple of years. A good 3/4 of the games I played were on that map.

A minor note, and something you’ve probably noticed already, is that this video was taken out of the Tex Talks Battletech playlist on your channel. Was this deliberate on your part or a result of the recent channel hack?
What I don't understand is the Awesome variants that add missiles or autocannons. Part of the reason the base Awesome works so well and is so reliable is an all-energy loadout means no lucky shots can blow it up with an ammo cookoff. Adding missile or cannon weaponry puts that weakness back in. Gimme a Gauss rifle Awesome and then I'll listen with rapt attention, though.

Another reasons that the Striker had faded into obscurity was the fact that it was not a very good mech. Awesome's definitely a great pic for favorite mech. I always am wavering between it and the Cockett as my favorite assault mech. The Awesome's just so dang *solid* of a mech, but on the other hand the Crockett just feel like a great generalist, like a trooper mech that's been drastically up-scaled.
I'm an optimizer, so when I started looking at construction rules, I made a chart. The chart listed the 'weight left over' for a mech of a certain mass and speed, including structure, etc. Another chart let me figure out the maximum armor weight on a certain frame. Once losttech/clan-tech showed up it got more complicated, but the Awesome is one of three mechs that had pretty much the heaviest armor they could at their size. The other two being the Atlas and the ... Cyclops I think? The Awesome and whatever the other was had the last half ton missing, which contributed only a few points total. The Atlas had the half ton. Many mechs had far too big engines for their size, or a fraction of the armor they needed. The infamous Charger? Keep the same speed, same armor (iirc) and drop it to 55 tons and you have much more tonnage for toys. But the awesome was a well designed monster. One of the best '3025' style units out there. If you can keep it in the sweet spots, it can give an Atlas a bad day, unless he gets a lucky hit with those LRM's.
OR, unless you rip out those three PPCs and replace 'em with FOUR Large Lasers. And add a couple of heat sinks as well with some of the savings in mass.
@@franksmedley8619 Why would I give up 3 hexes of pew pew for 2 points of damage? I'm assuming bog standard tech here, ex-tech and clanner stuff is a whole 'nother deal. Though with the fun techs I vaguely recall a bizarre beast we called something like the 'RAD-11C Radical' that was just 'as many clan er-large lasers and double heat sinks as you could salvage and then crowbar into a single chassis'.
went back to this one finally and it is still amazing. it did make me wonder however. will you ever do a video on either the marauder or warhammer? they are my two personal favorites and would love a Tex run down of them.
Used it in my very first CBT game a couple of days ago. It was the MVP, scored the only kill of our game - literally stomping a Wasp - and then duked it out with a Warhammer and Rifleman. Despite them having a lake to hide in, despite the curses of the dice gods, the Awesome was still standing - if barely - in the end.
I agree with you about the Awesome; a damn solid Assault mech that can do yeoman's work on just about any battlefield. Love the swipe at the Trashborn, too. I'll second wanting to hear your opinion of LAMs; or perhaps the humble Centurion (especially in its greatest form, that of Yen-Lo-Wang)
Awe, I love me some " Timber Wolf " I don't play table top, would not mind it's just a bit expensive and no one here would likely play with me. That's when it just punches you in the face, er... Cockpit.
That's Charging. Then backing up when the other guy is on the ground so the minimum range is negated and blasting the crap out of them again.
The PPC is a decisive weapon. When you fire it, somebody is losing the fight.
As much as I'd love a "remaster" of this one, that would open the door to him being nagged to redo most of his current mech videos. Awesome through Catapult.
The only thing that can stop a bad guy with an awesome, is a good guy with an awesome!
Awesome video! Happy anniversary
Thanks bro.
The map used for the background at the end hit me right in the nostalgia. It was included in the base box set I bought to get started in B-Tech and was the only map I owned for a couple of years. A good 3/4 of the games I played were on that map.
A video on the appropriately named "Awesome"? Hating on the Vatborn munchkins? I like the cut of your jib, good sir.
Agreed. Dirty, Cheating Clanners need to be kicked out of airlocks to fall into the local star.
I'm happy to see this little gem back after things... happened to the channel that one time.
No mention of the Awesome piloted by Adam Steiner in the cartoon? I mean, ehem propaganda?
What cartoon? Seriously, even if it is pants-wettingly silly, I still wanna see it. Can't be any worse than Robotech, and I sat through all three confusing seasons of that.
@@MathonwyPrime Ah ha ha ha. No. It's worse.... far worse. But while MW2 may have been my introduction the show is what got me to buy the toys as a kid.
It's not that bad haha, it's called Battletech: The Animated Series and is on youtube, although most episodes are in low quality. Look for it, the first part of the first episode is amazing.
@@bartunthegreat2999 It's not that bad, but at the same time the story goes from those who've talked about it they pretty much had some meddling from higher-up the food chain hold it down a bit.

Take a look at this
Hey Tex, love your work on this series, which got me interested in this setting!
A minor note, and something you’ve probably noticed already, is that this video was taken out of the Tex Talks Battletech playlist on your channel. Was this deliberate on your part or a result of the recent channel hack?
I was wondering the same thing.
One of the most cost effective mechs in existence. Although my favorite assault mech is the Stalker.
Ah yes, the infamous unbreakable 85-ton walking butt-plug.
I call it a body builder catapult.
The Awesome was always one of my favorites. It always seemed like the mechs prices needed a zero added to the end.
nah, the C-Bill is just that strong. You use local/house scrip for smaller denominations.
This is what I listen to when my painkillers and anxiety run rampant.
Thank you from the core of my soul.
2+ years on and this doesn't get old.
We enjoyed making it
Thank you so much for doing these videos i just got into MWO and love it. I forgot how awesome the lore is!
I love this video, and you started with my favorite mech!
Well, it's fuckin awesome my dude. Welcome Aboard.
I fall asleep to these not sure why but it’s the best lullaby when I can’t go to bed
came here from a Warhammer40k subreddit to say 2 thinks: First, fuck Games Workshop! Second, fuck Erebus. Wow...feel better now, much better. Now enlighten me about Battletech!
In 3050 Switch out the ERPPCs for standard PPCs use 16 double heat sinks and the remaining 12 tons can be used for close range weapons
After melting twelve light mechs in two hits each single handedly, I can confirm the awesome is just that good...rest in piece little urbies Tex will miss you
This is missing from the Tex Talks Battletech playlist.
Ok after a start like that you better cover a lot more of that lore.
You have the perfect voice to incarnate Sarna wiki
That may be so, but I dont think sarna even knows I exist
@@theblackpantslegion Nothing like a triple PPC alpha strike and a good wack from that claw to attract attention 😉.
Yup as Duncan Fisher is for Solaris i think you are perfect to cover the lore
Very well said! Great video, this should be turned into a series.
This was great, I hope you continue the series! I'd love to hear your opinion on LAM's. Also, congrats on nearly 10k subs!
I may touch on that.
Laughs in VF-1S Valkyrie.
I really hope someday if this whole "Tex Talks" catches on we get a feature length version of this mech.
A PPC Boat produced by a realm that had a PPC Shortage. :)
The Awesome was the cause of the shortage.
As good and succinct the video is, it deserves a remaster, or rather a remake. If Tex can speak for an hour about other mechs, I bet he can do so for his favorite one.
I would love to see him talk about the diaishi or the uziel two of my favorite mechs
this helps me get past my ptsd and sleep at night , thank you.
You're welcome
This was.......Awesome
Found this series short while ago, every episode is a joy to watch.
^_^
Please cover the Urbie!
It will be considered.
YESSSSS
Everyone's favorite Mech trashcan... Or, "How to hunt other light Mechs with a Big Gun". :)
Only if people stop calling it the Urbie.
Big fan of the tex talks battletech series over all.
Tex I am loving the lore series! And I am also an Awesome fan! c-bill for c-bill, they're one of the best units in the game! Nothing like going up against that Timberwolf with an Awesome trio! :-)
agreed!
i love how excited Tex was in this. you can hear him grinning ear to ear
NOw after many feature length documentaries on these beautiful machines, i wonder if Tex will update this one or leave it as is
4:55 "now I know what some of you are thinking..." Me, a Steiner fanboy: "Zeus?"
When in doubt, add more ppc
Just getting into Battletech and was told about your videos in this series by a pal. Thank you for them!
@@copperhamsterbecause that way you will not have any malus at close combat.
Add another comment for the comment god. Also, this series deserves more attention (even if it's weird hearing Tex's voice like this).
went back to this one finally and it is still amazing. it did make me wonder however. will you ever do a video on either the marauder or warhammer? they are my two personal favorites and would love a Tex run down of them.
Its on my list
Rejoice
Man, I've gotten into Battletech because of this series, and I JUST got a *pair* Awesomes in MW5. Great stuff!
Glad you like them!
Yes yes yes. Urban mech go
After the next one I may. People really like Urbies.
That art work(at the beginning) is why I purchased this game. Awesome
Oooooooh. Can you do the Marauder next?
Possibly. I have another one lined up but I may let people vote on what's next.
ah man, Mech 2's Marauder was my absolute favorite.
Do the Urban Mech next! =D
Its nothing to a warhammer thats why Harmony Gold is suing to keep it
Glad to see this back up!
Getting close to 10k subs! :)
Getting there. If TH-cam will acknowledge that. It's been a crawl, but I'll get there. Or die.
I still come back and watch this video on a regular basis because it's so short and sweet.
I want to see my favorite Mech since the Dos Vector graphics game: The Battlemaster
Awe, I love me some " Timber Wolf " I don't play table top, would not mind it's just a bit expensive and no one here would likely play with me. But I did play Mech Warrior 2 as my introduction to Battletech in the mid 90's. So My favorite's are the Timber Wolf and the Marauder. But, never played with an Awesome so maybe soon in BattleTech
Please do a vid on the Centurion or I'll AC/20 this Urbanmech.
think of the kids
Watching your series makes me want to get back into writing. Great show!
Hold up, you telling me this thing is literally called the AWESOME? Those Federation bastards stole my notes from when I drew robots as a kid!
Just the kind of channel I needed. Keep 'em coming!
will do brochacho
