    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

    Some misconceptions in the video:
    Argonians do emote using facial expressions, though they are mostly detectable by other argonians.
    Argonians who leave black marsh always have the innate connection to their Hist. Only those who are born without the aid of Hist sap do not have a connection. The hist will often send argonians away on tasks/adventures to collect information for them.
    The argonians aren’t so much as slaves to the hist as you are a slave to your own brain.

    • @jkgf4671
      @jkgf4671 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Jotunn96 So when wizzard have telepathic connection to his familliar it means familliar is the wizzard? Or when two wizzards have telepathic connection to other wizzard it means that we have one wizzard? But then which one?
      Also this telepathic connection works more on Hist side. So that would means that Hist is a wizzard and Argonians are his familliars.

    • @Jotunn96
      @Jotunn96 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      JKGF That's a very loose comparison. A more accurate one which is actually used in the lore is that the hist is like a daedric prince and the argonians are like dremora. And unlike wizards and familiars both sides gain from the relationship in different ways even if one of them holds most of the power.

    I finally started my first argonian character, Claps-Many-Cheeks, and waterbreathing is nice.
    I use a mod that does a lightweight rework of racials, removing all of the active effects and making passive effects that replace them, and argonians get super swim speed, and they regen hp quickly while underwater. Pretty nice way to travel or escape

    This was fascinating. I ALWAYS play as an Argonian and Kajiit. They make the best sneaks and thieves but the Argonian has the added edge of not getting disease, being able to traverse through water with no issues and still have plenty of room to build up in archery, weapons both single and double handed as well as all the wonders of the arcane. Plus, they simply are the coolest looking of all the races. Easy.
    The Skyrim level up system really helps move the dial along in so many schools and fields.
    I’m currently replaying and my Argonian is a thief in the night, a powerful magician who is yet still super savvy with his bow and his war hammers. No need for shields and armor for him either. Robes and magic do him plenty well along with the Histhskin ability.

    With how handily the Hist-led Argonians were able to react to the Oblivion Crisis, wouldn't that imply the Hist allowed Argonians to be taken into slavery?

    • @narupiv
      @narupiv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes its well implied throughout the series that Argonians are basically just bodyguards the hist made themselves, and the hist only ever does the bare minimum to keep the argonions alive and populated to keep their defence force ready to protect them. The oblivion crisis is one of the best examples of this, as the hist supercharged the argonians solely to protect themselves. The Argonians made the choice to battle in dagons realm and the hist only kept them powered up in there because it would act as a deterrent for future invasions.

With the hist they can undergo certain metamorphosis to evolve more rapidly than any other race such as their conquest in the oblivion crisis. As far as roles go, they can essentially fill them all. Assassin, there's shadowscale. Warrior, the the an xileel. Necromancer, sure,, Etc... on a lore perspective I'm aware the hist essentially use the Argonian as vessels for knowledge and basically protection much like the dunmer have either the tribunal or Reclamations but they are a very unique and great race who have their scales deep in society rather it be a dockworker to a merchant, a slave, even a noble.

The discrimination in Tamriel is not based so much on physical aspects, but on the conflicts that have been had with other nations. An Argonian would suffer a lot of discrimination in Morrowind due to the conflicts they have had with Black Marsh, but that same Argonian would not have many problems in Cyrodiil, Hammerfell, Valenwood, etc. Just check Skyrim, the discrimination suffered by the Argonians does not compare to that suffered by the elves, especially the Dunmers. There even seems to be more discrimination against the imperial than against the Argonian.

      If I remember correctly, this is to prevent the Argonians and Dunmer from killing each other. And this is only in the city of Windhelm, in the other cities there is no problem with the Argonians. They are even business owners like in Riften.

      @@void9399 maven black-briar owns the bee and barb, talen-jai and keerava only work there. the only argonian that seems to own a buisness is modesi, where as there are several establishments all around skyrim that are owned by dunmer, there is :
      new gnisis cornerclub, the white phial, sadri's used wares, and calixto's house of curiosities. plus Aval's merchant stand (inside windhelm, the only place that you hear specific discrimination against dunmer)
      hlaalu farm (outside windhelm)
      drunken huntsman (whiterun)
      all the places on solstheim( only mentioning not really counting for obvious reasons)
      the fletcher (solitude)
      the point is that the dunmer at least seem to be able to own property while the argonians dont, they all have to live either in one bunkroom outside of windhelm (not even allowed inside) or in some other bunkhouse in riften.
      so if we are talking about discrimination, being allowed to own property seems alot less discriminatory than being forced to live in a single common area and not even allowed to enter the city you are employed by. i understand that the dunmer are being "contained" in the slums in windhelm, and that they are being discriminated against, but they are at least allowed to own property and run several successful businesses. and you only see dunmer discrimination physically in windhelm. and yes you hear nords yell that "skyrim belongs to the nords" and "damn elves" but they dont even refer to argonians as their title, only lizards and that they will use their remains as ornamentation.

      I think you're wrong, both the Wiki and IGN claim that Keevara and Talen-Jei are the owners of The Bee and Barb. Even the comments between Keevara and Talen make it clear that they buy the Mead from Maven. Logically, if Maven were the owner of the inn, they would not have to buy the mead, since she would supply it because it was her own business.
      elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/The_Bee_and_Barb
      www.ign.com/wikis/the-elder-scrolls-5-skyrim/The_Bee_and_Barb
      Modesi is also the owner of his own jewelry business.
      In Solitude there is also Gulum-Ei, who works for the East Empire Company, taking charge of the warehouse in that city. That is a very important position for the company, so it also highlights the confidence that Argonians have.
      In the Winterhold area you can discover the body of an argonian that belonged to the College, and also during the main story of that faction you can see the spectral form of Takes-In-Light, another Argonian that belonged to the College.
      So in the College there does not seem to be discrimination against the Argonians either. The only place that shows something like this is Windhelm, although in that place it also discriminates against all those who are not nords, and as I said before, this measure seems to be focused on preventing a greater conflict between dunmers and argonians
      Another point to take into account is that in Skyrim there are not many NPCs that are argonians, which makes sense because it is a cold place, a climate that the argonians do not like, and Black Marsh is in a very strong state, which makes no sense for the argonians to get out of there. On the contrary, due to the lore of Red Mountain, there are many NPCs that are dunmer. But although there are not many Argonians, those examples that I put make it clear that the few that are there, they are in a position of power and trust. So discrimination does not seem to be a high factor with the Argonians
      We must remember that in Skyrim there are many negative comments towards all races that are not nords, so it is a mistake to fall into the cherry picking to try to say that the nords refer to the argonians in a worse way. But something that stands out a lot is that almost the majority of the negative comments that random NPCs say are against Imperials and Elves. Which makes sense due to the civil war with the Empire and the long history of conflicts against the elves
      Another element to support the idea that the Argonians do not suffer so much discrimination is found in Oblivion. In this game a certain disposition was implemented between the different races, and the Argonians were among the races that did not have positive or negative elements with other races. On the contrary, the Dunmer had -10 with the Argonians and Altmer, and -5 with all the other races. So with this dynamic, the designers showed the type of conflicts and discrimination that different races usually have. From a lore point of view, it also makes sense, because the Dunmers have been slavers, have been in several wars with humans, and are often elitist, on the contrary, the Argonians tend to keep away from conflicts, and do not usually have severe problems with the other races.

      @@void9399 first of all i would like to say that i am loving this conversation about some of my favorite games, thank you for this Gabriel.
      as to oblivion, the Argonians lore wise were neutral because of their aggression towards the Daedra (the Daedra had to close all the portals in Black Marsh because the Argonians were so effective that they counter invaded the Daedric realms), and that they had trade relations to the empire, but live in an alien way in an alien environment. i mean, in the video we are having a discussion on, it is said that the other races have a hard time relating to Argonians because they don't emote in the same way most folk do. where as openly Daedric worshiping Dunmer were seen negatively during the oblivion crisis, i don't think it had much to do with them being Dunmer themselves but rather the Dunmer were seen as conspirators to the Daedra(which was not the case, just an easy target)
      back to skyrim: gulum-ei is not in control of the east empire company warehouse in any regard, he works there as a front for his thieves guild operation, and in the thieves guild quest to follow him, he takes an unknown back entrance into bandit controled territory, vittoria vici is the current... i guess "foreman" would be the correct term(depending on the dark brotherhood quest status) any time you need to have items released that are being held by the east empire company in solitude, you talk to her. to the point you made about the Argonian mages, you are absolutely correct that the college does not discriminate(besides the school of restoration), the archmage is a Dunmer afterall (or...was). on to talen-jei and keerava are under the employ of Maven black-briar. they get generally listed as owners because they are the merchants tied to that location. maven tells you during the thieves guild questline that she owns the bee and barb as well as the brewery they don't claim to buy the mead, only that they need to get more form her. you are also right that there are drastically less Argonian NPCs than Dunmer which leads me to the "quantity" portion of your argument, that the small amount of Argonians we see in game hold positions of trust and a modicum of power. to this i refer you to my list of several locations where Dunmer do in fact solely OWN and operate their businesses (the list numbered eight if i'm not mistaken) where as there are only two instances of Argonians holding positions of anything other than indentured servitude, or menial labor. those being the aforementioned Modesi, Talen-Jei, and Keerava. on your stance claiming that the reason they don't let Argonians into windhelm for the sole reason of preventing conflict, i ask for proof, as i have sunken hundreds upon hundreds of hours into the game and have never once heard any sort of dialogue that points to this or even mentions it. fact of the matter is the Argonian workers in windhelm have no property to own and the Dunmer do.
      finally the "cherry-picking" you refer to also acknowledged that the Nords call out hateful thing towards all races that are not themselves Nords. i quoted the lines: "skyrim belongs to the Nords!" and the vastly over-used "damn elves!". i don't see how that was cherry-picking, my point there was to show that the nords still call the elves "elves" while they don't seem to care enough about the Argonians to label them anything other than animals, and threaten to mutilate their corpses to make clothing. they do this with the Khajit as well calling them "cats". all in all, i believe that Argonians are treated worse throught skyrim specifically and in a worse manner that the Dunmer. i hope you read this carefully and that you see my point of view, and even if you don't i hope you have as much fun as i did holding this debate with you.
