This was amazing! I didn’t know that the shadow side had its own transition color, or rather, that the light into the shadow transition color could be two hues, I’m still processing 😂 I will save and re-watch this one. Thank you for making this video!!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Such an important element in contrast, and the vital relationships in painting. Art really is a mastercraft. It's not just about making a great picture 🖼️
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you Ian. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
You are very welcome
Excellent tutorial once again. A keeper. Thanks.
I'm glad it was helpful.
Garish, yes sometimes I get lost and the result is a bleeding mess, thank for showing us the transition between the colours, much appreciated.
I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you. What a revelation. I can now understand and SEE what is in front of me.
I'm glad it was helpful.
Beautiful demonstration!
Thanks so much
Excellent lesson, thank you Ian, another "aha" moment
I'm delighted you found it helpful.
I found this video to be helpful to me. I did not know about how to "pop" transition areas of light to dark in this way. Thanks for sharing it.
I'm delighted you found it helpful.
Ohhhh a lightbulb moment for me. Thankyou!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
This is such a game changer in a work of art! Thank you for your wonderful talent and teaching skills you so generously share with us. 🙏🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
You're welcome!
Great video and explanation. Such an important concept for all painters. I rely on neutral / muted color in my abstract paintings, and I think about them as "complex" colors versus "clear" bright colors. Combining the muted, complex colors with bright ones as you do here really can make a painting sing. Thanks for sharing the info!
I'm delighted you found it helpful. Thanks so much.
Such useful info as always Ian, thanks for your generosity in sharing!
I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you for being so generous with your expertise & knowledge. Highly appreciated! 😇
I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
I just received your book, "Mastering Composition" today. I am so excited to study and enjoy it. Thank you.
Hope you enjoy it!
Great demonstration of what you were talking about! I don’t think I would have ‘gotten it’ without the demo. Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Life got in the way for me and haven't been able to watch this until today (Wed). As usual Ian, I marvel at your control over your brush, especially with long continuous strokes of one color. I'm afraid (with this lovely set up) I'd end up with a messy oval as I tried and tried to get those crisp edges. Love watching you paint, it's just so inspiring! Thank you Ian.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Wow! I had never even noticed transition colors around me and now I am seeing them everywhere! Can't be unseen now!
I like that. Can't unsee it now.
I've watched this a couple of times...so helpful, thank you Ian. The demonstration in particular tells me how to do it in real life.
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing lesson! Many thanks Ian. I’m doing a challenge on light and shadow and will incorporate this!
I'm delighted you found it helpful.
Thank you Ian. I consider you one of the best art teachers on TH-cam. You have been helpful like my former college professors. An artist can never learn enough, so this is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. All the best.
Perfect timing. I just received two books about Josef Albers.
This lesson was extremely informative, thank you so much Ian. I love vibrant colors but did't use it effectively. Now I know how to tackle my next project!
I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us so generously and in an easy to understand way.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you so much for your guidance. Only yesterday I was thinking of doing better transitions and voila here is the tutorial. Full of gratitude for this wonderful example. Will try it out soon. Best wishes.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Excellent tuition, thank you so much.😊
You're welcome
Makes me think of the neon light effect OR filter...good idea for my next art project
I'm glad it was helpful.
This demo is awesome. I have your book on Mastering Composition and though transition colors are mentioned, it didn't give me enough information. This demo did. Thanks.
Hi Diana, delighted you found both the book and video helpful. I had 144 pages and somethings just got left out. All the best.
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition This video was especially helpful and I can appreciate the issue with limited pages. I was a contract illustrator for 30 years. I work primarily in watercolors, so trying to figure out how I can add those transition colors. Perhaps mixed media?
Bob Ross of veggies.
Happy carrots!
I’ve watched this video twice already this morning. It is very helpful. I struggle with transition colors, either creating transitions too stark or too weak. I turned to studying Albers & Itten and looking closely at the work of artists for understanding. After watching this, I have a different and simpler understanding. Thank you for this and all of your videos.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you for making this video Ian.

This is one of the reasons I love Diebenkorn’s still life’s
Outstanding
Glad it was helpful.
Thanks Ian, this was a literal out loud AHA moment!! I was struggling with creating some digital art backgrounds in a Procreate piece to be honest and just cold not figure out what was wrong and this literally solved my problem. Who knew transition colours made SO much difference. I have taken a lot of art classes and this is the first time this has been explained and demonstrated so well, and even though I don't use oils your demo was so relevant. I really appreciate your time and energy in making these videos for us.
so glad you found it helpful. All the best.
Great! Thank you.
Glad you liked it.

What a winning concept!! Thank you Ian❤
I'm glad it was helpful.
Thanks Ian
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Well, this is naturally what happens with light and dark the most true color which shows the most vibrancy is right at the edge between the shadow and the light.
Thank you Ian
You're welcome!
Thanks for this great tip and demo.
I'm glad it was helpful.
Very enlightening. Thank you.
You're very welcome
Great demo thank you Ian

I'm delighted you enjoyed it.
Thank you, I paint watercolor, but know your idea can also be used by me.
I have many students who work in watercolor. The ideas are foundational for every medium.
Amazing video!! You make painting look so simple 😭I feel as though i have painting knowledge but lack the practice. I just cant bring myself to paint due to fear of messing up. Any tips??
Practice! Then each piece won't be so precious that you'll be afraid of messing it up.
This is a great concept. Does this only work in still life settings?
HI David, it is most obvious in still life, but happens as light cuts across a face for example, Or can. Or the transition colors between shadow and light in a landscape.
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thank you, Ive observed this in art in the past as more of an outline. Reinhold Weiss used this concept and made this more of an outline. This really does make things pop, as you said. Look forward to learning more. There is an art walk tonight, will make some more observations there. Much appreciated! David
My question is a bit different. I found a youtube video on the Apelles Palette, or Zorn palette. What do you think of it for landscapes? I see alot for portraits and none on landscapes.
Hi Rosemarie, the Zorn palette is for portraits. If you look at Zorn's paintings of the landscape he is obviously using all kinds of other colors. Even if portraits if he needs a hit of color for a piece of cloth say he uses whatever he needs. The Zorn palette is a way of simplifying flesh tones. That is its function.
By "intensity", do you mean to say that the transition color is more saturated?
Yes exactly. Intensity, saturation and chroma are all synonymous.
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thanks for the clarification!
What do you think of the fauves?
Way too over the top on color intensity for my taste.
@@IanRobertsMasteringCompositionwho are some of your favorite colorists?
