Most useful lesson in composition that I have ever seen. Clear, concise, and well illustrated. Many kudos! I am now going to study your other linked videos on composition because of the outstanding quality of this one. ☮️💙🙏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
I think it's the realistic looking water, too. The color draws people in.
The colors are what drew me in!
Your composition tips are finally getting through to me.
I owe many apologies to my old high school art teacher Tom Wilcox.
He tried man , he tried
You have such a talent for communicating. Thank you for clearly explaining the things that it could take years to understand!
Composition is king, but the simplification of the brushwork is what appeals to me in the paintings you showed here.
I don’t think it it the person as much as the break through of blue sky in in the luscious trees that catch my eye , surrounding the person , Thanks very informative and inspiring.
I haven’t seen a ton of your paintings, but this is definitely the best one I’ve seen. Beautiful painting and great tips!
As an artist myself, I constantly try to challenge myself every time I paint and I just loooove creating amazing compositions but this video really helps on how I must perceive my art when It comes to the viewer. Really helpful thank you so much! Also What I really like about this painting of yours is that you also dragged some green into the sky and it kind of really drag the hole painting as one and not multiple subjects that don’t align together, also help to relax the eyes a bit and to rely even more on the vocal point of this masterpiece ❤
I really need to work on my landscapes, I hope to try this one soon! I'm a travel and landscape photographer but when I try to translate my work into painting, I really struggle. Your landscape course is next on my list 🙂
Phil Starke would be a great resource for you too. He talks a lot about how to work from photos.
@@arachosia Thank you!
Opposite for me
@@Cakebabyy So interesting! Everyone is different and struggles can vary. Which I find so fascinating. This is why I love speaking with other artists.
@@MandyMichels yes! Painting landscapes are my strength, photography omg not so much. My son does photography and he’s tried to help me but I just can’t quite capture what I want. Usually when he sees something he can make it look better. With me, people are like, what is it? Isn’t that funny?
Chris has taught me so many useful skills that I continue to use when I paint. He clearly states what is important for each painting session he teaches on Patreon. He is consistent in his approach and what makes his videos so important to me is that I can watch them in an hour and get the painting done that same day. I find that I get better and better with each session and that the proof is in the paintings I have done and the positive comments they receive.. If you are considering trying a Patreon subscription for a month, it would be well worth it IMO to see if its for you.
It was the water for me. Thanks for a very informative and clear video!
VERY helpful Chris. I loved going through the process with you, it will help immensely in planning future paintings. Planning is the key.
Watching your video, I suddenly noticed that the composition of the beach painting is almost perfectly done in a golden ratio. Shame that I can't comment with a picture, because it tried it out in Photoshop and you would surprised to see how well it follows that rule. That might also be another reason why people like it.
This painting vatch our hearts because of harmony in subject and colours which create mood , emotion.
Thank you for lesson.
Outstanding Chris, thank you. You really showed us how an artist approaches a scene- you loaned us your eyes.
This was so much helpful information in a compact video, I’m going to have to watch again and then pursue your composition videos. Excellent teaching style! 👏👏
I've found a lot of your videos to be very helpful and informative, but THIS video was exactly what I needed right now!
Awesome! Thank you!
This is one of the best videos you’ve ever done! Or maybe this is the one I need the most?
Great tutorial on how to create a great painting using focal point, direcitonal force, and the process on how to paint. I will probably buy your course after I finish the others.
wow, that was a great lesson! thank you
I find myself getting bound to the details of a particular scene, but if I can determine the most appealing element, then I can adjust/remove/move as needed. Thanks very much, a great video.
Wow! What a well articulated explanation to help create more dynamic compositions! Thanks so much!
One of your very best tutorials, Chris! Lovely painting and so helpful❤
Ooooh. Edgar Payne. Best book on landscape composition.
Great video, Chris! I particularly love your channel for the compositional coaching that you provide. The encouragement, examples (of good and bad), as well as the practicalities of using source material as a guide to ultimately produce a really great and memorable painting that's not a plain copy of the original is fantastic. You always help shake me out of my natural "copyist" habit that was great to build skills (initially) but really is just the first, basic step on the way to great art. Perfect is not necessarily interesting or memorable. For instance, even photographers retouch photos! Love your soft realism work. Cheers!
That is beautiful and inspiring 🙌🏻♥️
Thanks mate, a brilliant video, beautiful painting, thanks so much for sharing your amazing talent. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺.
Thank you so much 😀
Love your work.. as always!
I so look forward to every video. So informative! You make these cocepts so easy to grasp.🎉
I like my landscapes to have a human element, not just nature. For instance, a painting of the Matterhorn dominating the background with some ancient human-built structures in the foreground. The sharp straight lines of buildings contrast the irregularities of the mountainous vista.
Wow really awesome explanations
Thank you so much, your videos are so helpful😊
Ummm … 🧐 is that a Nicolas Cage collage 🤩
The thumbnail made me click, Nicolas Cage made me stay.
Your mic is all full of paint. I love it.
I love seeing your process! Great video!
Glad you enjoy it!
I’d like to see the final painting.
Spectacular lesson and painting Chris.
Thank you! Cheers!
A very helpful video. So inspiring. Thank you.
Love to hear this!
Wow, thank you so much
Really nice!!!! So werl done
Fantastic Video, thank you
The one thing that's always been difficult for me is composition. Years in art school did nothing to improve it. So this is great. Thanks very much for the free guide. I just got it and I will take a good look at it tomorrow. This will give me something to look forward to the rest of the summer! I wanted to ask what kind of camera you use. I used a DSLR for years then just started using my phone camera recently. I also paint "imaginary" scenes such as illustrations for children's books, undersea compositions and that sort of thing. I have to make them up. So having an idea what looks best is going to help. Thanks again!
So much important info...thank you!
You are so welcome!
So helpful!
Great teaching tutorial! Thanks for the help. :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much. ✌🏼
Welcome!
I put that one up against Tischler
Hey Coach- what happened to your easel? I noticed you're using a clip on the upper right corner. Keep up the good work! Peace. Out.
Hi Chris, Have you ever worked with pastels?Much of how one works in oils is similar but I wish you had some advice for pastel painting. I think you are a wonderful artist and an amazing Instructor.
It’s the light on the water.
Thanks dude ❤
Any time
I feel like I've painted that exact scene @2:00 - is it from a photo online?
Great vid. However, you say you need the rocks to push you into the scene more, whereas they pull me out (different direction): my eyes get attracted to the 'noise' in the corner and thus move from the focal point outwards... Isn't it about striking a balance between bits that grab your attention and the shape of the bits/ edges leading you to the focal point? Not sure the rocks do this for you but they do provie a nice balance; otherwise you'd never get 'unstuck' from the focal point.
PS the water is excellent! Love it
Hi, Chris! Great video as usual!
Whenever you release your business webinar, will you let us know by publishing a video here?
The business webinar of for anyone who had bought my portrait course before May 20th and emails have gone out to register for the webinar. If you haven’t gotten one maybe check your spam folder
@@paintcoach hi, Chris. I bought it last year, but could not find the email in the spam folder. I'm afraid it was deleted automatically. Is there a way I can get this email? I'm waiting for your business course since you announced it.
Please let me know
@@paintcoach I'm looking at it now, and realized I purchased the basics of oil painting, not the portrait one 😢
Can you oil paint a portrait on black canvas
Just came across your video. Interested, though I am a beginner acrylic painter. Can I still use your technique just substitute with acrylics. Paint indoor in my condo, no ventilation. Would like to do wet on wet acrylics even palette knife impressionistic landscapes. Welcome your thoughts and suggestions. Nice vids!
👍👍👍
Where is the reference image from?
I took it at the park at the base of the Skyway bridge
@@paintcoach Can I copy these pictures and draw my own?
You have a fiancé?! Dang, you look young as heck.
The sky tree holes are way too bright! Tree holes must be much less bright than the actual sky!
I believe that you over cropped. Everything in the original photo leads the viewer’s eye to the lightest light and the darkest dark, which is at the top of the reverse “C” shape. For my taste, I would have included all of the reversed “C” shape which helps lead the eye to, and emphasize the strongest part of the painting. Just a thought, and beautiful painting nonetheless.
Your composition tips are finally getting through to me.
