- There's one new #iOS17 feature coming that perhaps you don't know about yet. It's one that Apple neglected to mention at all in its WWDC 2023 keynote, and one that potentially bulldozes a hole right through the iPhone's walled garden.
Sometime during the lifespan of iOS 17, #sideloading and alternative app stores will come to the iPhone. Apple doesn't want to do this, but if it wants to keep selling iPhones, it's gonna have to. It's a big, huge deal that's been a LONG time coming, with a fascinating backstory involving greed, billionaire back-biting and some of the biggest apps around.

I never had iPhone before, but lightning is much better than usb-c, because my phone and cable is more than 5 years old, and it still grips the connector tightly and makes proper contact, unlike usb-c, which after half a year wobbles, slips out, and has a faulty contact, it doesn't always make contact. I was also very surprised by this, but it is true. On the other hand, I would also strongly support side loading and third-party applications and stores, because it is not good to spend on everything, something and many other things would be available.
@beni_plays then apple shpild allow everyone to use lightning, right now no one can use it without paying a hefty sum to the big apple.

Sideloading was never a security issue for a number of reasons: MacOS was open from the start and still is without issue. If someone is afraid they can stay in the AppStore and not move from there, then in the end, it's just a matter of choice.
The public could have forced Apple to allow sideloading long ago if, faced with this problem, they turned to the competition, but apparently Apple consumers are comfortable this way.
Monopolies can be destroyed very quickly if people realized the power of decision they have.

MacOS is not open. Especially in the latest version (Sonoma) they disabled AltServer so now I can’t side load anything. Especially any Mac with a T2 security chip is especially difficult to install unsigned software.

But that's exactly my point, as long as users are comfortable with it, Apple will continue to do the same.
People on android sideload apps everyday.. the only that infected is the one that download apps that were sent by someone on messaging apps

It’s not a big issue on Android cuz they locked it behind several restrictions… Apple doesn’t like that.
The European Union made 2 good decisins:
1. The USB-C obligation
2. The force to tolerate Third-Party apps.
Apple owes the EU for forcing them to make their devices more appealing to more consumers

More people may buy it but Apple will hemorrhage money for losing lightning and sideloading. That being said they will still be a multi trillion dollar company. But although I’m thanking the eu I can certainly say that Apple is not

I would happily switch to iphone if we get side loading and file explorer in iphones.
Ironically the new version of MacOS (Sonoma) removed legacy mail plugins that AltServer relies on to side load apps. AltServer released a statement saying they are aware and are working on a new method to sideload on to iOS.

I bought an iPad Pro for work and study but I discovered that with a Dual Sense controller it's also an insanely amazing gaming platform. If only Apple allowed us to install emulators.
For me I would like Apple to be more open with its control over the device itself. Stuff like reducing the volume reduction on apps when on calls, active background processes able to work for any app, more settings to customize the experience in general.
If Apple finally releases the ability to sideload third-party apps and people start porting Revanced and other stuff to iOS, I'm done with Android. iOS has came a long way and was optimized since day one. Now it even supports game controllers and whatnot. Meanwhile, I always felt like the Android counterpart needs much more processing power and RAM to even compete with iPhone flagships. Android was always a slow, buggy mess. I had the S4, S6, S7E, S8 and S10 and it never changed. They always were blazing fast, however some months later they began to lag and stall. And that given that I am an Android dev and know what I'm doing. I disable things I don't need, leave free space, etc. I even rooted it to gain some controls over the CPU/GPU with a custom kernel. It kinda helped, but still... iOS doesn't need all that and "just works" - fast.
With all of that said, Android, especially on Samsung phones, is being massively dumbed down. They removed everything I loved Android for. 3.5mm Jack, IR Blasters, removable batteries, etc. Even Root/Magisk is going away with forced signatures. I really have nothing to loose anymore. They want to compete with iOS, but are not even on the same level. Java will never be as fast as C.
All in all... Again... If Apple allows third-party Apps and I see that it will stay that way, I might switch sooner or later.

You could sideload 3rd party apps on IOS through Altstore/Sideloadly since IOS 14. And IOS already has a TH-cam Vanced, uYouPlus (which I use)

I'm at the same place... Hell I'm switching to IOS in few months 😢 but I love android. And it's not android's fault that it's loosing its charm but it's OEMs fault that they are killing android.
For real currently confused between iPad pro and samsung S8 , if iPad allowed some ways to download mod apps , then I will go for iPad blindly , only thing I will miss is SD card slot 😢

Man, I didn't even know that Epic parodied Apple's own ad to use against them! That's actually hilarious, even if most of Fortnite's player base had never even seen that original ad.
It's also notable that the original 1984 styled advertisement was actually from Apple for their Macintosh and aired during Superbowl XVIII (only the 18th Superbowl! 🏈).
I just know there'll be a version of Fdroid for iOS.
I hope people in the UK and US will be able to do this too, otherwise it’s ridiculous.
It would be so funny if in September apple released the new iphone and only the European one had the sideloading feature and the usb C, but lets hope it doesnt come to that.
The side loading feature would have to be worldwide because if someone moves to Europe it would be weird and VPNs and all that stuff, but I can see them doing that for the lighting port

I have read articles that basically said apple would most likely release this only in EU and make sure VPNs are not reliable in terms of getting access to sideloading. It's sad but I hope it doesn't come to that. At the end of the day there is many sources and most are wrong. It's up to us to decide which seems most plausible
Sideloading apps could be totally a local thing. But USBC is most likely than not to become a global feature.
I think it would be cheaper to implement one port worldwide

That’s so BS. By this argument Epic should allow anyone to upload skins and other things without charging anything. Tesla should allow any apps to be installed and so on.

From what I understand the EU law affects products released after march 2024 which means it would affect iOS 18 - but I could be wrong i haven't read the law for a couple months
Nope, it will affect iOS 17. Something, as iOS 17 is in beta right now and will release to the public some time in September when the new iPhone is announced, a beta 1 of iOS 18 will be announced at WWDC 2024 which is usually held in June-July which means the law will go into effect before iOS 18 is announced.
I thought it need to be implemented by December 28, 2024…

The deadline is May 2024, they must have it up and running way before that, so EU can review it and make sure it follows guidelines.

Infact Apple does have something like Google Play Protect on macOS. That's why there's no need for anti virus on Mac.
*sigh* there's no need for antivirus on anything and Windows has defender too, Macs not needing an antivirus is a myth, it is required as much as any other device, that being it doesn't need one
Mac's don't get a lot of viruses because they are not the majority of devices. Macs are about 30% of the market while windows is around 68% of the market

Sideloading has always been possible. With free dev account and Xcode. How did you skip over that factor?
Xcode only runs on MacOS though.
You'll probably have to put the app on a special apple sim card that you put in and then find something hidden deep in the accessibility settings to install it

The app stores are a massively monopolistic anti-competitive tech prison where they can control anything anyone makes, down to their policy, or they don't get to exist.
Finally the public can get a real ad blocker and free stream and casting. Custom launcher soon apps no longer touch

So far it's nothing. Apple didn't confirm anything, it's just something they supposedly need to do before March 24 but to this day there's no information about how or even if Apple will implement it (they should but you know how these legal things can be fight in court).
If Apple only made it work in Europe, everyone will just flip the setting to Europe to get it

If I had to guess. Side loading will be possible but you’d have to run the ipa file through iTunes or some approved equivalent. Maybe they’ll keep the 7 day resign rule.

If that's how they did it then you could argue that sideloading is technically already on iPhone. I can sign and install any ipa file for 7 days with a non-developer account right now.
If Apple makes it a hassle to sideload apps in Europe, they WILL be in violation of European Law and will be fined for it. They won't be able to escape this time (just like Google won't be able to prevent OEMs from making all their bloatware uninstallable on Android).
Their best option will be marketing. And because 99.9% of iOS users are dumb AF, an aggressive marketing campaign to scare them will likely be enough. Heck, I have tech savvy friends who are still iSheep and don't even want Apple to have that possibility on the iPhone because they're scared of "the malware from Android".

They literally had an open border policy that took back a year later we kept buying oil from Russia for no reason. The eu literally tried to force micro usb to every phone some years earlier. Also don’t fool your self android is just as closed off as iOS, don’t like being able to change the colors fool you. There is built in temple try and literally most aspects of both systems are closed source, don’t story anything you wouldn’t want to be leaked or the government to know on a smartphone in general.

That would kill off all financial incentive to continue, you understand how asinine this idea would be? When companies inevitably say "to hell with this" and quit doing business, it could cause the already stagnent EU economy to fall even lower.

One major problem is that apple has often allowed apps which scam their users to exist on iOS and even allowed them to run ad-campaigns. Their walled garden always have had weeds and poison ivys. And apple sucks in case of side loading even for developers, you can only keep your own developed apps for 30 days, and 90 days in case you pay them $100 per year for testflight.

If an iOS device becomes less secure with side loading, it means that iOS has severe know security vulnerabilities (if they're unknown, the manual review process won't catch them either) whose only line of defence is a manual review process. A process that's highly flawed. I've had apps rejected for something that they've not complained about in earlier version, meaning that the one that reviewed the earlier versions, didn't fully review the app. Which makes you question what else they're letting through.
If this is Apples approach to security no one should ever use an Apple device because this means Apple's whole design philosophy around security is flawed, and their devices are probably littered with security holes.
But more likely, it's just Apple bullshitting the consumers because they want to keep them in the their grasp.

iPhone is the most selling product of Apple and if they can grab cash from any product, it is this one.
As people who buy Macs, know why they are doing it and what they need for their workflow, but majority of iPhone users buy iPhones for show off/peer pressure.

EU Privacy/Security requirements are probably even more stringent than the US and even then they realize the importance of allowing people a choice and the USB-C requirement was wise move.

9:00 They will probably realise it with the phones region which you can set at will. Changing it to France for example will deactivate downclocking the device „to save battery life“ or rather why it was banned in France. Because they intentionally worsened the phones over time by software limitations to encourage you to buy a new device.
I hope they extend this to all supported OSes (15/16/17)

Apple isn't going to announce anything untill they are at the deadline, or they have a way to spin it like it was their idea in the first place. Like with the iphone 15's USB C port, we all know it was a forced move, but they certainly talked it up like it was their plan in the first place.

Ironically I am not bothered to use the latest Apple OS devices, because I bought a lot already. What Apple should factor in is.... I would buy newer devices with the latest OS if they allow me to buy fave apps like "Saints and Sinners Bowling" from other providers, and so it would boost their newer iphone and iPad and Ipod sales, making them more money. But..... I really think it's bad they will not make phones with easy change batteries, tha is criminal, maybe literally. They are removing the right of poorer people to "make do and mend" with an older device. That is immoral.
