During the drag race at around 1:50 you can see that the power of the Model 3 is limited (5 dots), battery only at 57%. I wonder what would have been the result with full battery and power.
It would definitely have beaten the Merc and also a bit quicker in the auto cross. It’s shown on dynos that it pulls harder above ~45mph. 95% is no different than 100, but it’s a smidge more hp than 90, and subsequently so at 90 vs 80, a bit lower at 70, furthermore at 60, and so on. You can tell also in the software at the screen showing dots on the moving black line to the right.
Hans von Hansens the only thing TM could adversely affect is battery temp due to the extra cooling it provides. But that’s not gonna be an issue because with sustained full throttle the temps will be quite elevated, particularly if it starts off the high speed run when warmed up properly. So anyhow, if the computer sees too high of a temp it’ll limit power. That’s part of the reason they added TM.

The Tesla Model 3 is the most fun car I've driven. Performance is insane. I still like the more sedate Model S. The big screen. Lots of buttons. I think if I had the Model 3 for a week I might be converted. The idea of having the speed and all the controls on the centre dash touch screen seemed a bit alien on the first test drive. After 10 mins it seemed completely natural. Great visibility too. Phillip.

Rossrful you have to have a warm engine too and the ev car was only charged to 50% here. At 100% charge this would be even more of a win. A cold engine/exhaust spits condensation and gargles and the oil is too viscous when cold, so not sure why you are only putting that on the battery. A win is a win, and ice lost here (except for the 4 feet win for the amg that took half a mile to barely do it). Credit where credits due. Also if you go awd on the other cars they just lose more power through the transmission and the smack down is more embarrassing. There’s a reason why there are so few awd racers that rely on laggy engines.

Yep. I drive a Model S p85d with insane+. Last week I was at a traffic light behind a Model 3 performance. Next to that pulled up a BMW M5 with a lot of noise and theater. Green light. Model 3 shoots off, I have to pace my paddle just a little to not hit the 3, pass the BMW, and drive next to the 3 to the next traffic light. We look at each other and laugh. No chance BMW. So next light the BMW is behind me, insane+ turned on. Bye! The model 3 could almost keep up with my 692 horsepower, it's that fast. Maybe just a half a car length of difference. The BMW made a lot of noise l, but was nowhere to be seen and gave up. Next light: both of us drove of with a light foot. Laughing our asses off.

But how much juice did it use ? that ask must be like everything in life and come at a cost, it must surely speed up the power usage dramatically. Only over the long term will people see that electric cars for most people simply won't work, and the longer someone has an electric car the more it will be connected to it's charging port, the very same as most laptops tablets and phones. When i bought my new laptop i could get 4-5hr's usage before it required charging, now it's 5 yr's old i get about 40 mins use, a car will be the very same as it ages.

I road in a model 3 performance at a track with upgraded suspension and tires... the speed was mind numbing, but I agree with everything Chris says. You could really feel the weight and lack of balance compared with other purpose built cars in its class.... that being said, it ran 5 seconds around the circuit better than my 700hp Saleen mustang simply because it can accelerate at such an astonishing pace compared with my rwd mustang
"Weight" is a consequence of higher speed. And "lack of balance" too. There are several mods, like custom alinging, sway bars, shocks and springs that will greatly increase M3P performance on track.
I used to own a modified mustang before I switched to Tesla. My 3 Performance is on Mountain pass performance coilovers with zero g wheels on pirellis. My Y Performance is stock. I have an E46 manual M3 with full Dinan suspension and mods for the weekends.

Personally, I don’t see how any Tesla has soul at all, the interior’s are the most boring things ever, the looks are subjective but in my opinion a bit boring as well. I’d choose any of these cars over a model 3 any day of the week.

As a vehicle however, the Tesla is cheaper, is battery powered, require no oil changes/filtration repairs, has bio-weapon defense modes, can travel up to 650 km on one charge, is way more technologically advanced, has the capability to drive itself, and that's just to name some of its perks If you're a petrol/engine head or car enthusiast, yeah AMG probs takes the w (obviously) it even wins looks wise as well, but as a car, Tesla flies ahead in basically all other aspects

Plaid is a beast. And power no longer fall off. That tech should be in the model 3/y in 12-24 months. They comparing a 5 seater family car to the Chiron. The plaid should be compared to a bmw 5 series or amg e class instead.

Those AMGs are fast they have top speed most times makes other vehicles leap off the start line because of their lighter weight but those AMGs have top speed they will catch up with you later

@karma tam Good that you ask, after checking in on the other channels, it would seem TG has, once again, faked the numbers to disadvantage the Tesla. The main culprit being that they claimed a 0.4 seconds gap between the two cars at the 1/4 mile, despite the fact that the cars were nearly side by side on the video (so more like 0.1 to 0.15 seconds of a gap at most). Really disappointed.
Honestly I think it doesn't matter that the Mercedes caught up at 130 MPH, that is way over any legal limit except in Germany, and even there it is rare to hit those speeds. In every real world situation you are just gone with the Tesla before the others can even wake their engines up. And it is way way way cheaper then the others. You need to be braindead to pay that much more just to be able to say, "hey I am faster at 135 MPH than you"
It's not just that you fanboy. When you buy a Merc you buy luxury, badge, bragging rights, a beautiful car, fun. The Tesla on the other hand is just fast from a standing point.
In real world you wouldnt be drag racing anyway. I know electric cars are faster than petrol in terms of acceleration, but sorrry, driving is more than that. Do you see how F1 nowadays is more boring that 15 years ago despite of being faster? Same with tesla. Ugly looking car, no sound. I would take any of the others, speacially the Giulia, over the Tesla any day. Geno Geno when you buy a Tesla, you get built in Netflix, Hulu, TH-cam, Spotify, and an autopilot system that is leagues better than any other manufacturer. I love my Mercedes s550 but once you have a Tesla there’s no going back. Absolutely no way I’ll be buying any other car after getting a model 3 performance.

@@bshl3866 I did a test drive in a friend's car and although the electric push feels great, it doesn't make up for the things I look for in a car. As I said, the exterior is sooll boring, and I dislike too the interior with that big screen and no dedicated controls for the clima. At that price point I want a car that shoes that, and the quality and desing of the Merc interior, or even BMW, and obviously the looks, are way better than the Tesla. Dont get me wrong, I know someday I will have an electric car, I just hope is not as boring as the Model 3. Ps: Dont compare the Mustang to these three, I would even pick the Tesla over the Mustang.

In California, the state with by far the most electric cars, only 1% of power used is from coal. when Audi RS4 raced a Tesla, it was neck and neck for the first 3 seconds, and it was against a Tesla model X P100D which have 70% more horsepower than the model 3 performance here (770hp vs 444hp) . here, those rear wheel drive cars didn't have a chance off the line. The BMW has a top speed of 174mph and 4.0 from 0-60, the Mercedes Benz had a top speed of 180mph and 3.9 from 0-60, and the Alfa Romeo has a top speed of 191mph and 3.8 from 0-60.

Yep, and that’s why Tesla is quite useless. If you really push it a few times the battery loses a lot of power. Petrol cars just keep on going (and so does a Porsche Taycan). Tesla also overheats quickly when pushed to the limit.

You need to get some experience to drive tesla model 3 in track mode. You do approach corners differently in tesla model 3 due way traction work when "Track mode" is enabled.

the '.....' dots you see in the Tesla's display at 1:50 are NOT only due to the charge level being at 57% (which definitely impacts high speed torque output, but more on that in a bit); it is a funtion also of the battery temp, and for the ICE folks, think of your beloved engine in your fave beauty of a car, where you'd give it to me, cold, and I right away drag race it at full beans max attack to 150mph, without warming anything up at all. The Battery Mgmt System is doing it's thing. The fact that this run had FIVE dots, is indicative that it was VERY power limited, at all speeds below ~50mph. It was likely too cold or too hot. Tsk tsk, shucks, definitely not a good representation of the capability. This run was done before the latest power update, which demonstrably made the higher speed pulling stronger, not just the 0-60 (which also improved). In fact we're not even sure if this was done with the prior power update installed that came out (around March or April). Overall conclusion: We all demand you do this again with the latest update circa Nov 2019 onwards, and you show us during the run the bar to ensure there are no dots! Trust me C63S Benz fans, the outcome would be very different ...

The only advantage an electric 4WD car vs most gas cars is the 1/4 drag race and it even lost in that....lmao. They're shit on the track and shit at anything beyond the short 1/4 mile. Look at how the C63 pulled passed the Model 3 and imagine is the race was longer. Mercedes are known to be pretty dogshit off the line too because they're proper luxury cars and focused more for track racing with RWD (the Model 3 is much slower on Laguna Seca than the C63S).

Just realized, at 1:50 you will note that full power is being limited, car is probably capped off at 90% power there. Had they done a run where the car was at 100% available capacity, it would’ve most likely won.
I’ve only ever raced someone to maybe 20kmh over the speed limit from a standstill in my 33 years. The tesla is king of the streets in the REAL world . That is Just amazing. To put it in perspective it takes a teslas max speed before it gets passed by these cars !
Now model 3 Performance has 476hp (500hp in a couple of weeks) and this show that accelaration was limited... (The dots in the power bar) Not an even match

Gap really? Can you speak from experience? I’ve got a Model 3 performance as well as a Carrera T, E92 M3, S2000 and Rubicon Hard Rock, all with sticks. The sports cars get tracked regularly and the Jeep is off road more than on road. I think the Tesla is just as much fun as all of them.
i love petrol cars and drove M4 and C63, now I have an M3P. the most fun of this three cars i have/had with the Tesla. acceleration and the fun you have with it is insane.
I have a Model 3 Performance as well as an M3 and 911. I love the C63 as well. The Tesla does not have the looks, sound, fit and finish of the German cars. The Tesla is a good daily driver though and saves money on gas. Gas is near $5 per gallon now. I am driving the Tesla a lot more.
Anyone notice the Model 3 Performance was limiting its power? Notice the dots appearing on the power/regen line (left and right of the shown speed). Wonder if that played a part.
50% is a very realistic everyday battery level, if you want a kick of acceleration, you should not need to charge and launch prep the car for 20 minuttes before a launch.

I even hate the BMW M models that needed you to go through menues to get 100hp extra and activate sport suspension, gearbox and engine, 3 different places in the car computer, before it was ready.

Because these cars do, in quite a few cases, see usage scenarios at speeds well-beyond those observed in the quarter mile. But this wasn't a win for petrol as much as it was an impressive display of how rapidly electric is advancing.

The real problem is it takes Netflix and TH-cam and Whoopie cushions to try and make them emotive engaging products, in this area they are a fat zero... it will be down to the mainstream brands to make cars exciting if they can. Ovidiu Diumea Sure, I get it. But if it wins on acceleration in any sensible test (0-60, 40-80 etc) show it! Find tests where it doesn’t win (without being contrived). Set up a slalom where it’s weight might be an issue. And if it wins everything but in a boring way, show that! Show how it’s less engaging for the driver. Show someone’s feet, manual gears - dropping down for engine braking etc... If petrol has a future, show us why.

Impressive results for the Tesla being at 57%. In the drag race @1:50, you can see that your acceleration is reduced. Give a nice charge to the Tesla and warm up the battery and it would’ve probably won the drag race
To me it's the other way around. Cars like the Merc, BMW etc are all examples of conformity and the status quo. Exactly "old man" traits. Choosing the Tesla is to be a part of the development of the future. I wouldn't even choose e-cars from those manufactures because they are reactionary companies only doing it because they feel they have to. Disgustingly old fashioned thinking. Sure the Tesla's handling might not be quite there yet, and it might have some issues with battery longevity under high power but it's only a matter of time before things like that are sorted, at least to a level that is equal or better than IC engines. And those developmental timelines are only telescoping faster and faster.

But I don’t think it’s progressing people’s love of cars. Electric cars are kind of minimal cars. Less moving parts, less noise.. even the cabin is design minimally. Once you start taking things out of cars A) you’re adopting an ideologically motivated design choice which in my opinion is just a trend and B) you are removing inputs for our senses (auditory, feel). Less car will equal a lesser attachment possibly signalling the end of car enthusiasts and motor sports.

That drag race was like a competition with the Tesla with one hand tied behind its back. Knowingly can't win the quarter mile, so rig it so petrol cars can have a chance with a longer track and lower battery...lol. It's like saying we know Mike Tyson will win at the fist fight, so we need to starve him for 3 days first to make it fair.

During the drag race at around 1:50 you can see that the power of the Model 3 is limited (5 dots), battery only at 57%. I wonder what would have been the result with full battery and power.
There was recently another power increase too. Free 5% increase in performance via over the air update.

It would definitely have beaten the Merc and also a bit quicker in the auto cross. It’s shown on dynos that it pulls harder above ~45mph. 95% is no different than 100, but it’s a smidge more hp than 90, and subsequently so at 90 vs 80, a bit lower at 70, furthermore at 60, and so on. You can tell also in the software at the screen showing dots on the moving black line to the right.
Yet the porsche taycan can do this at any battery percentage (I know its 3x the cost)

Wirmish i heard track mode isnt helpful in drag races and could even make it slower.
Hans von Hansens the only thing TM could adversely affect is battery temp due to the extra cooling it provides. But that’s not gonna be an issue because with sustained full throttle the temps will be quite elevated, particularly if it starts off the high speed run when warmed up properly. So anyhow, if the computer sees too high of a temp it’ll limit power. That’s part of the reason they added TM.

The Tesla Model 3 is the most fun car I've driven. Performance is insane. I still like the more sedate Model S. The big screen. Lots of buttons. I think if I had the Model 3 for a week I might be converted. The idea of having the speed and all the controls on the centre dash touch screen seemed a bit alien on the first test drive. After 10 mins it seemed completely natural. Great visibility too.

Rossrful you have to have a warm engine too and the ev car was only charged to 50% here. At 100% charge this would be even more of a win. A cold engine/exhaust spits condensation and gargles and the oil is too viscous when cold, so not sure why you are only putting that on the battery. A win is a win, and ice lost here (except for the 4 feet win for the amg that took half a mile to barely do it). Credit where credits due.
Also if you go awd on the other cars they just lose more power through the transmission and the smack down is more embarrassing. There’s a reason why there are so few awd racers that rely on laggy engines.

Yep. I drive a Model S p85d with insane+. Last week I was at a traffic light behind a Model 3 performance. Next to that pulled up a BMW M5 with a lot of noise and theater. Green light. Model 3 shoots off, I have to pace my paddle just a little to not hit the 3, pass the BMW, and drive next to the 3 to the next traffic light. We look at each other and laugh. No chance BMW. So next light the BMW is behind me, insane+ turned on. Bye! The model 3 could almost keep up with my 692 horsepower, it's that fast. Maybe just a half a car length of difference. The BMW made a lot of noise l, but was nowhere to be seen and gave up. Next light: both of us drove of with a light foot. Laughing our asses off.

At 1:31 when Chris launched the Tesla I thought he cheated for half a second. The way the model 3 launches is just crazy.
But how much juice did it use ? that ask must be like everything in life and come at a cost, it must surely speed up the power usage dramatically.
Only over the long term will people see that electric cars for most people simply won't work, and the longer someone has an electric car the more it will be connected to it's charging port, the very same as most laptops tablets and phones.
When i bought my new laptop i could get 4-5hr's usage before it required charging, now it's 5 yr's old i get about 40 mins use, a car will be the very same as it ages.

I road in a model 3 performance at a track with upgraded suspension and tires... the speed was mind numbing, but I agree with everything Chris says. You could really feel the weight and lack of balance compared with other purpose built cars in its class.... that being said, it ran 5 seconds around the circuit better than my 700hp Saleen mustang simply because it can accelerate at such an astonishing pace compared with my rwd mustang

"Weight" is a consequence of higher speed. And "lack of balance" too. There are several mods, like custom alinging, sway bars, shocks and springs that will greatly increase M3P performance on track.
I used to own a modified mustang before I switched to Tesla. My 3 Performance is on Mountain pass performance coilovers with zero g wheels on pirellis. My Y Performance is stock. I have an E46 manual M3 with full Dinan suspension and mods for the weekends.

As a vehicle however, the Tesla is cheaper, is battery powered, require no oil changes/filtration repairs, has bio-weapon defense modes, can travel up to 650 km on one charge, is way more technologically advanced, has the capability to drive itself, and that's just to name some of its perks
If you're a petrol/engine head or car enthusiast, yeah AMG probs takes the w (obviously) it even wins looks wise as well, but as a car, Tesla flies ahead in basically all other aspects

Plaid is a beast. And power no longer fall off. That tech should be in the model 3/y in 12-24 months. They comparing a 5 seater family car to the Chiron. The plaid should be compared to a bmw 5 series or amg e class instead.

@karma tam Good that you ask, after checking in on the other channels, it would seem TG has, once again, faked the numbers to disadvantage the Tesla. The main culprit being that they claimed a 0.4 seconds gap between the two cars at the 1/4 mile, despite the fact that the cars were nearly side by side on the video (so more like 0.1 to 0.15 seconds of a gap at most). Really disappointed.

Honestly I think it doesn't matter that the Mercedes caught up at 130 MPH, that is way over any legal limit except in Germany, and even there it is rare to hit those speeds.
In every real world situation you are just gone with the Tesla before the others can even wake their engines up. And it is way way way cheaper then the others.
You need to be braindead to pay that much more just to be able to say, "hey I am faster at 135 MPH than you"

As I said, the exterior is sooll boring, and I dislike too the interior with that big screen and no dedicated controls for the clima. At that price point I want a car that shoes that, and the quality and desing of the Merc interior, or even BMW, and obviously the looks, are way better than the Tesla.
Dont get me wrong, I know someday I will have an electric car, I just hope is not as boring as the Model 3.

when Audi RS4 raced a Tesla, it was neck and neck for the first 3 seconds, and it was against a Tesla model X P100D which have 70% more horsepower than the model 3 performance here (770hp vs 444hp) . here, those rear wheel drive cars didn't have a chance off the line. Tesla got to a 100 km/h almost a second before them, and since that moment it was lost.

The BMW has a top speed of 174mph and 4.0 from 0-60, the Mercedes Benz had a top speed of 180mph and 3.9 from 0-60, and the Alfa Romeo has a top speed of 191mph and 3.8 from 0-60.
I mean who’s really gonna do a 0-100mph on the streets? Most of the time on the streets it’s 1/8 of a mile and some times barley 1/4 mile. Yes on a closed track others will creep up to the model 3, but on the public roads model 3 will dust its competitors

Yep, and that’s why Tesla is quite useless. If you really push it a few times the battery loses a lot of power. Petrol cars just keep on going (and so does a Porsche Taycan). Tesla also overheats quickly when pushed to the limit.

You need to get some experience to drive tesla model 3 in track mode. You do approach corners differently in tesla model 3 due way traction work when "Track mode" is enabled.
No experience can eliminate the boat loads of body roll that car has...

the '.....' dots you see in the Tesla's display at 1:50 are NOT only due to the charge level being at 57% (which definitely impacts high speed torque output, but more on that in a bit); it is a funtion also of the battery temp, and for the ICE folks, think of your beloved engine in your fave beauty of a car, where you'd give it to me, cold, and I right away drag race it at full beans max attack to 150mph, without warming anything up at all. The Battery Mgmt System is doing it's thing. The fact that this run had FIVE dots, is indicative that it was VERY power limited, at all speeds below ~50mph. It was likely too cold or too hot. Tsk tsk, shucks, definitely not a good representation of the capability. This run was done before the latest power update, which demonstrably made the higher speed pulling stronger, not just the 0-60 (which also improved). In fact we're not even sure if this was done with the prior power update installed that came out (around March or April). Overall conclusion: We all demand you do this again with the latest update circa Nov 2019 onwards, and you show us during the run the bar to ensure there are no dots! Trust me C63S Benz fans, the outcome would be very different ...

Mercedes are known to be pretty dogshit off the line too because they're proper luxury cars and focused more for track racing with RWD (the Model 3 is much slower on Laguna Seca than the C63S).

I’ve only ever raced someone to maybe 20kmh over the speed limit from a standstill in my 33 years. The tesla is king of the streets in the REAL world . That is Just amazing. To put it in perspective it takes a teslas max speed before it gets passed by these cars !

Gap really? Can you speak from experience? I’ve got a Model 3 performance as well as a Carrera T, E92 M3, S2000 and Rubicon Hard Rock, all with sticks. The sports cars get tracked regularly and the Jeep is off road more than on road. I think the Tesla is just as much fun as all of them.

i love petrol cars and drove M4 and C63, now I have an M3P. the most fun of this three cars i have/had with the Tesla. acceleration and the fun you have with it is insane.
I have a Model 3 Performance as well as an M3 and 911. I love the C63 as well. The Tesla does not have the looks, sound, fit and finish of the German cars. The Tesla is a good daily driver though and saves money on gas. Gas is near $5 per gallon now. I am driving the Tesla a lot more.

50% is a very realistic everyday battery level, if you want a kick of acceleration, you should not need to charge and launch prep the car for 20 minuttes before a launch.

Most people do not want to bother with babysitting the car, to get the perfect drag time, if a fast and furious car parks next to you at the lights.
I even hate the BMW M models that needed you to go through menues to get 100hp extra and activate sport suspension, gearbox and engine, 3 different places in the car computer, before it was ready.

it’s very honest to say “we had to change the rules so that we could make petrol win”, but you have to ask, Why? Why invent a test (that’s nearlly double the UK speed limit) just to fudge the result. Again, Chris was totally honest about it but, why do it?
Because these cars do, in quite a few cases, see usage scenarios at speeds well-beyond those observed in the quarter mile. But this wasn't a win for petrol as much as it was an impressive display of how rapidly electric is advancing.
because it was fun... nothing else... everybody knows EV's will be faster in all areas one day. The real problem is it takes Netflix and TH-cam and Whoopie cushions to try and make them emotive engaging products, in this area they are a fat zero... it will be down to the mainstream brands to make cars exciting if they can. I don't think Tesla knows how.

Ovidiu Diumea Sure, I get it. But if it wins on acceleration in any sensible test (0-60, 40-80 etc) show it! Find tests where it doesn’t win (without being contrived). Set up a slalom where it’s weight might be an issue. And if it wins everything but in a boring way, show that! Show how it’s less engaging for the driver. Show someone’s feet, manual gears - dropping down for engine braking etc... If petrol has a future, show us why.

Impressive results for the Tesla being at 57%. In the drag race @1:50, you can see that your acceleration is reduced. Give a nice charge to the Tesla and warm up the battery and it would’ve probably won the drag race

To me it's the other way around. Cars like the Merc, BMW etc are all examples of conformity and the status quo. Exactly "old man" traits. Choosing the Tesla is to be a part of the development of the future. I wouldn't even choose e-cars from those manufactures because they are reactionary companies only doing it because they feel they have to. Disgustingly old fashioned thinking.
Sure the Tesla's handling might not be quite there yet, and it might have some issues with battery longevity under high power but it's only a matter of time before things like that are sorted, at least to a level that is equal or better than IC engines. And those developmental timelines are only telescoping faster and faster.

But I don’t think it’s progressing people’s love of cars. Electric cars are kind of minimal cars. Less moving parts, less noise.. even the cabin is design minimally. Once you start taking things out of cars A) you’re adopting an ideologically motivated design choice which in my opinion is just a trend and B) you are removing inputs for our senses (auditory, feel). Less car will equal a lesser attachment possibly signalling the end of car enthusiasts and motor sports.

That drag race was like a competition with the Tesla with one hand tied behind its back. Knowingly can't win the quarter mile, so rig it so petrol cars can have a chance with a longer track and lower battery...lol.
