      Well, it took some time for Tesla to develop large scale casting. Ford and others could jump straight to that. And Ford is talking about using some form of unboxed assembly. Front, back, middle, right, and left. More pieces than what Tesla has talked about. A better idea than Tesla's? Who knows.
      Where the non-Teslas seem to be badly lagging is not controlling all the software in their products. At the moment suppliers ship chips and firmware/software with parts and legacy can't just tweak those built in functions like Tesla can.
      Of course, now that Tesla has demonstrated the advantage and some suppliers are selling parts to Tesla sans internal smarts other companies should have little trouble getting the same sort of parts.
      Ford is talking about installing the CPU right after the paint shop visit. Then letting the computer do the testing and recording for that individual car going forward. Picked that one up from Tesla.

    Unfortunately five years will be way too late. In five years cybercab will have started to make an appreciable dent in new car sales as a whole. If people can take a cybercab to run most errands then their old ICE or personal EV cars can last longer. New car sales will drop for this reason. There will also be many city and suburb dwellers who decide to forgo car purchase all together if cybercab meets their needs. They will frame in their garages to expand the living space in their homes rather than have to move as families grow.
    Because of this dual effect I expect new car sales to drop by as much as 50% by 2030.... the remaining sales will be mostly EVs with some ICE trucks still sold in some locations.
    The limiting factor on this future will be electric power generation and how fast it can be increased with solar and wind and storage.

    • @bobwallace9753
      @bobwallace9753 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yep. This is the monster under the bed that's actually a monster under the bed. Massive disruption to car ownership in our future.
      Add to that, Tesla is building cars designed to far outlast conventional cars. If a traditional ICEV lasts about 150,000 miles and EVs last 300,000 or longer that will start cutting demand in half.
      And I expect Tesla's robotaxi will be designed as a million mile vehicle.

      It shouldn't take an established company like Ford with deep pockets as long to duplicate what a startup company took 14 years to develop. That's provided that seen- it-all old managers don't interfere with the engineering R&D. Knowing that something is possible and having samples to examine is a huge advantage. Ford does not have to duplicate FSD in 3-4 years. There are lots of people in the US that will be very reluctant to let a vehicle drive them around for at least a decade.

      " That's provided that seen- it-all old managers don't interfere with the engineering R&D." And don't interfere with tooling, production, and advertising. And there be the rub.
      Look at what happened at VW and Nissan. They both had CEOs who attempted to move their companies to EVs and they got chased off.
      If a legacy company decided to, they could design a Model 3/Y type EV in two to three years. Tear down a Tesla and copy. Then it would take a year or so to reconfigure a factory. And another year or two to ramp up production.
      I'll set the probability of Tesla robotaxis no later than five years from now at 80%+. Tesla robotaxi is the point where the car market starts a massive demand decrease. Huge demand for robotaxis but rapidly dropping demand for new privately owned cars.
      A very large decrease in new, non-robo, car demand = failure for companies with significant debt overhang.

    For telling what Jim Farley the only legacy manager that speaks with personal integrity was saying in Germany Herbert Diess was fired by the old school Piëch-Porsche family still thinking in the founders time brown vision of man-Agement. Three out of 8 systems qualities were bad already in 1994; who they handle faults, personal innovation and decisions, last but not least who they handle truth about reality which was directly leading and was known by the criminal cartel of the five to Diesel-Gate. Now Piëch-Porsche families are saving their family silver on playing other dirty games not leading to a rethinking of how to operate Volkswagen Group. They think still to be to big to fail and have all German media and even Highschools, Universities and so called ‚independent‘ science institutions like Fraunhofer and most tier one suppliers under their pressure and control. They for 40 years have not been free to work on the present or future. A disruption however was obvious in China after the old European and Japanese junk sent and produced there that nationalism grew and a well trained and educated class of young entrepreneurs and engineers just sized the opportunity as China thinks long term and not like we do quarterly fixed on immediate results!

    Jim has a good vision, for the most part. (This spake Underqualified Anonymous Commenter.)
    But he's an autonomy skeptic. He does not think it's important to get autonomous driving software into Fords in the 2020s.
    Or at least, that's his stance to the public. I don't know what he discloses in private.
    Robotaxies are one thing. I can perhaps grasp why Ford might prefer to leave robotaxies to other manufacturers. Maybe.
    But consumer vehicles will become autonomous, too. It's going to save a lot of lives. It's the new luxury - much better than premium leather seats or whatever it is luxury automakers are schlepping into their products to up the snob factor.
    When Tesla has that, its competitors will need it, too.
    They are not ready for that. At all.
    Right now FSD's price is keeping most consumers at arm's length from the technology. But that will change. Once it's good enough - soon, I think - Elon will reduce the price in phases to get better market penetration.
    That feature will sell a lot of cars to consumers. A *lot.*
    Ford will not be happy to be on the outside looking in.

      Not until then, I think. Basically, he's counting on regulators to keep his products relevant without autonomy.

      I would be extremely surprised to find out that Jim and Elon have not already had unofficial talks about Ford using Tesla FSD. Jim seems to have dropped the legacy BS and openly recognizes that Elon led and is leading. Ford was the first to sign up for Supercharger use. And, I'm pretty sure, Ford has been working on FSD for many years and understands that you can't produce real FSD by people writing code.
      You do realize that autonomous driving has already been approved, do you not? Tesla just needs to clean up edge cases and bring data.

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@bobwallace9753 In private... It makes sense to me that Jim and Elon have discussed it.
      That bit about 'already approved' is naive.
      A few states, notably Florida, have passed bills 'permitting' autonomous vehicles. But they all leave many, many unanswered questions. There are still laws in the books on those states spelling out which roads are regulated by the state and which are the purview of local governments - and the authority of local governments to regulate for their roadways has not been abridged. So right away, there is a gap in permissions.
      That's only one gap. There are others.
      Nobody has defined how police interactions will take place. Liability for compliance with traffic laws and for accidents are not defined. Who gets a ticket for a violation? And how will police obtain compliance for lawful orders? And who is responsible in the event of a traffic violation? A crash? Or an injury? There are ID rules in all states that are different for drivers and passengers. What if *only* passengers are on board? What powers will police have to ID people?
      None of that is unsolvable. But none of it has been solved state-wide. Detailed legislation and regulations will be needed.
      Pilot programs skip past those gaps. And they are not permitted outside of a small geofenced area. But Tesla wants to go *everywhere* with potentially millions of autonomous cars. I'm here to tell you, no state is prepared for that with its legal and regulatory regime.
      There isn't even a boilerplate law states can copy and paste at that level of detail, I don't think.
      And we haven't even gotten to NHTSA. They have the national regulatory authority to stop Tesla in its tracks, if they want to. And Biden is okay with inconveniencing Elon. There's the little matter of unions dividing them.
      No, this is not going to be simple or quick.
      Jim knows this.
      I suspect that if Jim expected imminent national go-anywhere approval (which would step on states' constitutional rights), he would already be telling us about negotiating a deal.
      Lobbyists with deep pockets will fight hard against Tesla in every jurisdiction.
      Best we can hope for in the near term is a pilot program Luke Waymo's.

    • @bobwallace9753
      @bobwallace9753 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There are Waymo robotaxis operating in multiple US cities. And they are expanding. 'already approved' is not naive
      Break a traffic law and the driver gets the ticket. If Waymo or Tesla software is doing the driving then they will be held responsible for an infraction. Passengers in a taxi don't get ticketed if a red light is run.
      Traffic laws in the US are determined by states, not the federal government. And as an aside, I suspect Biden will start recognizing and praising Tesla after he wins in November. Right now Biden needs every union vote he can get in swing states.

    The only way Ford can survive is to partner with Tesla. GM and Japanese makers are going bankrupt simply because the cost of a car is driven down by increasing volume and non-EV makers can’t reach a scale where they can be competitive. They will always be double or quadruple the price of their competitors AND cannot make up revenue and profits on the service and parts side. Their money will evaporate quickly then boom…. Bankruptcy and liquidation. They will not reorganize. Massive collapse of the auto industry will happen in next few years. Ford did make a good decision to hire the main Tesla engineer over the model Y and let him operate separately from Ford to do things differently. Ford will be one of the last to survive but probably won’t make it due to starting 10 years too late.

    My frank opinion on the Cybertruck is that it will go the way of the Model X and Model S. It will shrink because it's inefficient in mass and very very expensive. It's styling will likely develop when they get better with Stainless Steel but they will have to chase a cheaper vehicle when Rivian hits the mass market. Rivian WILL out compete the Cybertruck.

      The price will come down as Tesla sells all the Founder's Editions that deep pocket people want. It's a big vehicle but some people want large. Rivian has to scale and that is difficult.

      It shouldn't be hard. Elon Musk has said many times that he made many mistakes during Tesla's "development" process - which continues to this day. What will make or break Ford or any other legacy maker is whether they're willing to embrace rapidly making and learning from their mistakes in development before they attempt to go into large-scale production.

    Very refreshing to hear a CEO of a legacy auto maker tell it like it is for a change. Very rare these days of constant spin and evasionary double speak by others. Cudos to Ford’s Jim Farley - echoing @tomwinston6758.
