Vlog 31 - BMW M3/M4 S55 Valve Cover Replacement Tutorial (PCV Valve Failure)

  • The BMWs are known to have issues with PCV valve failure. The PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation and the valve is a mechanical regulator of pressure for the engine. Unfortunately, when this fails it can cause issues with the engine. The main symptom for this failure is a high pitch squeaking noise coming from the engine, which is the result of a vacuum leak. As typical BMW would have it, this valve is not easily replaced and is built into the valve cover, requiring a replacement of the entire valve cover assembly.
    Most M car owners are under warranty and can get this replaced for free, but for those who are in my situation without warranty, this is a full detailed approach to replacing the valve cover. This job at a dealership is quoted to be anywhere from $1800-$2200. With this tutorial you can replace this yourself at home for ~$600 and some time on the weekend (roughly 6 hours including breaks). This is the first TH-cam documented S55 valve cover replacement video, so hopefully this can help give back to the S55 community and save some of you $$$money! Link for parts are below.

      Duuuuude!! I'm so happy to hear this! Doing this job yourself is such a money saver and also makes you feel good not relying on the dealer for it. This video has saved many people since posting, so it makes me proud to see all of you going this route and doing the job on your own. I'm on the east coast, but Orlando is only 50 mins away. Next time I go to an Orlando Bimmer Club meet or a West Palm Beach Cars & Coffee event, I'll let you know!

    Great video. The community needed this. If you own a BMW you going to change a VCG, oil filter housing gasket, and eventually an oil pan gasket. My valve cover started leaking a few weeks ago so now it’s time to fix it and replace a few other things. Going to knock out the gasket, valve cover, spark plugs, coils, oil filter housing gasket, and a Mosselman oil thermostat. Just get it all out the way. Gonna be a long day but this video is a life saver. Glad to see you got it done with no issues and glad to see others are getting through it too. Saves roughly $2k in BMW labor.

      Thank you Mthusiast Media! I hoped the video would help others out and save everyone some money. Yes, I'm still running this valve cover and haven't had issues. It's definitely a long day in the garage for this one, but totally worth the time. If you haven't started the job yet, I wish you good luck and let me know if you have questions during the install.

    • @swallowmeknob
      @swallowmeknob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you know you had a problem in the first place? Have you felt any burning smell? I keep getting a burning smell on my M4, which I thought it could be oil leaking from the valve cover, but it smells more like plastic/rubber burning and I don’t have this noise described.

    • @tjwinsc
      @tjwinsc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@swallowmeknob Did you ever find what the issue was with your M4?? I have the same burning oil smell and I'm pretty sure it's the valve cover gasket that's leaking, I ordered a new gasket, but this is a lot of work so wanted to make sure I'm only doing this job once.

    • @swallowmeknob
      @swallowmeknob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tjwinsc it was the valve cover gasket, bought one from BMW which is quite cheap, the labour to change it is expensive. Mine is a low mileage (27k) if yours is a high mileage car, the cover can be warped and I would recommend changing the cover as well, to avoid paying the labour twice as the labour only cost the same as the cover.

  • @corey4582
    @corey4582 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for posting this! I just had this issue appear a couple days ago on my '15 F83. BMW quoted me $3,390 to change the valve cover. I have a 5k mile road trip in a couple weeks and I need to take care of this.

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Corey, glad it was helpful! I had to make this video as I felt nobody talks about this issue and it seems like it’s common for the older F8X chassis vehicles as we start putting more mileage on them. It’s ridiculous how much the dealer wants for a job that’s pretty straight forward to do on your own. Just takes time and patience. Let me know if you have questions along the way and good luck in your trip!

    Hey bro, what is your first name - feel weird addressing you as “Awesomoto,” but your video was awesome. I don’t have an M4, I have a 135i with only about 11k miles on it, but loved this video. Believe it or not, ended up here after some stupid Reddit car repair thread comments where the OP got some ridiculous quote for repairs on his 2018 M4. They wanted over $4k to replace a malfunctioning headlight and $2,109 for a valve cover gasket replacement (just the gasket).
    Some guys in the forum were claiming this was talking about doing this job in 1-2 hours well others were quoting book time of 8-9 hours. Now, book would have to account for the time it takes to scrape the old gasket and reapply a new gasket… which is at least another hour. So, I could see this being 6 or 7 book hours, if using old valve cover. You made the right choice by just buying a new cover. Btw, ECS is great, but do you realize FCP Euro offers a lifetime warranty on almost everything they sell (except things like oil, for example)?
    Thanks for the video, you’re clearly a skilled technician. Just wanted to add a few comments, if I may:
    • Given your skill level and high end vehicles, maybe time for some upgraded tools. Highly recommend a good digital torque wrench, esp when doing sensitive work like valve cover torquing. Also, get yourself a flex head ratchet and a universal joint socket… 1/4” stuff is your friend in the engine bay.
    •Why not put up 2 videos - one like this and a longer detailed version where you go step-by-step? Or, in the alternative, add separate step-by-step videos (multiple) for some of the more complicated things you do?
    • Do you have your own high end scan tool? BMW wants you to “adapt” all kinds of stuff, like a battery replacement for ex. A video on just a full battery install would help a lot of BMW owners as battery replacement on a BMW is kinda complicated.
    Anywho, long winded response - appreciate your well done video and your contribution to the BMW owner community. I also love that you respond to questions - don’t see enough of that in other maintenance videos. You earned a thumbs up and a subscriber! Btw, noticed your PA license plate hanging on wall. Were you born in PA?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      RJ!
      Wow, all I can say is thank you for the kind response and attention to detail...you really analyzed this project and I appreciate that!
      Yes, this was more like a 8-9 hour job doing it myself (for the first time) so one should set aside this much time (and maybe 1-2 hours of margin) for doing the job. I hear you on the FCP Euro comment and since this video I've made the switch to purchasing all my parts from them...they are amazing. I recently did an ABS sensor video replacement in my latest vlog were I was able to get the sensor from them at a good deal.
      - I agree, with you and I certainly could use some tool upgrades lol. I've taken note on your recommendations and I truly appreciate your advise on the matter as I'm a self taught DIY mechanic just trying to learn as much as I can about the vehicles I drive and how to maintenance them.
      - I do have all the raw footage from this install (not time lapsed) and I considered uploading a more raw version so that it could literally serves as a step by step video.
      - Unfortunately, I don't have a high end scan tool and its something that would have made troubleshooting that ABS sensor much easier. Depending on what future work I do on the M4 I may have to get one to help troubleshoot.
      I'm glad you noticed that I respond to all comments. It's my goal to never lose sight of that responsibility of being a content creator and this channel is something I want people in the community to utilize as a reference when working on their vehicles. Yep, I'm a central PA native living in Florida now.
      Thanks again for your detailed response and helpful feedback!

    This video was a huge help to me over the weekend. A friend and I replaced the gasket on my m4. It took the whole day but was a great learning experience. I would add though that since mine is RHD, we had to remove the wipers and the cowl at the bottom of the windshield in order that the cover went back on without any impediment. Upon removal it was hitting the wiper motor and cowl but just removing the cowl and zip tieing the battery cable up (small cover beside the positive terminal comes off to give more slack) it was very easy to get the cover back on and seated correctly. Your tip of using something plastic to pry up the cover came in very handy too by way of a trim removal tool. Did you have a burnt rubber smell coming through the vents after this job? Also that vent hose you removed to the front of the engine at 7:14, BMW TIS says not to do that but to remove the screw and bolt at the other end. I did it the same way you did and the whole thing crushed in my hands it was so brittle!

    i have a hughe prolbem with my m4, it pushes Oil through the PCV into the Air Intake, which gets into the Intake Manifold and then Burns in there which causes excessive oil Loss and big smoke clouds out the back, it only happens after letting the car sit for a few mins or a few hours and then driving again.

      Hey Kellogs, Sorry for the late response on this. It sounds like you may have more than just pcv valve issue, but if you hear the squeaking vacuum leak noise like I show in the video and loosening the oil cap makes the sound go away, then I'd say you likely have the pcv issue. That is a much cheaper place to start than replacing turbos. Let me know what happens when you get the car looked at. I'm curious to know what the issue is in case I have something like this come up.

      @@Awesomoto I have had my Car checked this Week by BMW M in Munich since they took over the Case through some Contacts to a Higher Friend who works for Rolls Royce, they cant seem to find the issue for the Leaking oil it has the Same software (Factory Software from when it was Delivered and so on nothing suspicious) But also a weird thing Started to come up again when i got my Car back. When the Engine is at Operating Temp and i check the Oil Level it shows different Oil Levels everytime i do the Check, sometimes it Shows max level and after 30 Miles it shows almost at Minimum and 40 more Miles later it Shows inbetween Min and Max and so on... Well anyways i have a Friend with an M4 2015 just like mine, he works for BMW as a Engineer and 2000 Miles ago he got the Same issue, he ended up bringing it to BMW in Munich just like me they Changed: (Valve Cover and Gasked, the Whole Air intake, Almost Every Sensor, Every oil pressure hose on the Engine, Boost Pipes, and so on..... all because almosteverything was full of oil. He ended up Paying 3600€ after a Discount of 35-40%. But nothing of that Changed the Problem and hes sold the Car because hes sick of it :=) Only thing left basically is the Turbos :D

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to hear this helped you out! It haunted me trying to figure it out and couldn’t find much info on it. It’s best not to drive too much with it because the crank pressure builds up and has to escape through other areas like gaskets and valves. You could potentially have rear main seal issues as it tends to want to escape from there. Let me know if you have any more questions or need help troubleshooting. Thanks for reaching out!

  • @Daniel-qs6bz
    @Daniel-qs6bz ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, thanks for this great video. I'm sitting here contemplating on whether I dare to attempt this. It would be a new "achievement unlocked" for me as I believe I have the same issue on my -17 55K M4. I see the valve cover is 700$ and the seal 30$, did anyone consider replacing the seal on the cover? Wouldn't that have been sufficient? You also refer to valve, is the valve built in to the cover or what am I missing here?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daniel! I believe in you and think you can pull this off. Just set aside a full day and have some patience with the process...you got this!
      Unfortunately, the issue is due to the PCV valve which is built into the valve cover on this engine, so replacing the seal on the cover won't fix the issue. The squeaking you hear is due to pressure build up and it can't be released by the PCV valve since it fails in the closed position (usually). If it were a bad seal on the cover, pressure wouldn't build up and the squeal wouldn't occur.
      Let me know if you end up tackling the job and if you have questions along the way.
