I've been running an F82 S55 primarily as a track car for about 6 years, estimate it's covered around 15k track miles. BMW did an amazing job with the cooling, oil surge protection and general track readiness of these cars. I used to log everything but no longer bother as it works so well.
I've never known a car to be so stable on track with cooling and I've tracked so many cars. The only problem I've had was a coil (replaced all 6). Remember watching a video with one of the engineers responsible for building the F8X. He said the brief was to build a car that could take sustained track use without overheating, my experience says they did exactly this. The road cars run the same cooling as the GT4 cars, same engine and gearbox too afaik.

I can confirm! I was on a number of trackdays with pretty hot weather and the oil temps are constantly around 110°C. And as the turbos are water cooled with an electrical waterpump you are pretty safe here, too.
Regular oil changes and maintanance and you are good to go :)

I'm at mid-60 K on my 2018 F80. It's a beast of an engine. I keep up on all the maintenance oil changes roughly every 2000 mi. Running it on flex-fuel stage 2 tune this thing is a blast to drive. I put it through hell daily driving it taking it to the drift track and the road course track and it just keeps on going, bro. There are people at this point running this engine up to 200,000 mi with maybe 1 or two of the issues you mentioned like PCV valve etc. which is really better than a lot of other commuter cars out there which is surprising considering all the abuse these cars can handle and keep running fine. Hats off to BMW on the S55.

I have a '15 m4 and recently had to replace the valve cover assembly due to oil leaking onto my exhaust. Car had roughly 46k miles on it. I paid to have it done and did the valve cover assembly, along with the valvetronic piece/hose, and I had a leaky coolant expansion tank. BMW quoted me about $6k for the job but I found a specialist and got it done for $3100 all OEM parts. This is one of my dream cars and I did expect it to be expensive to fix but the whole reason I was comfortable buying it is because I know its a much more reliable platform compared to its predecessors. This video will be super helpful for me in the future for any potential issues that may arise.

Really nice comprehensive video! I’ve had my 2016 F82 Competition for 6 trouble-free years. I’m at 54000 miles and I change my oil at around 5000 miles (plus other maintenance ahead of schedule). Love the car and I still get a big smile every time the garage door goes up. I know there will be some maintenance expenses soon but it’s worth it, in my opinion. I plan on keeping this car for many years since it is simply the best car I’ve ever owned! Still turns heads and super fun to drive! 👍🏁😊

Had an M4 comp for three years, every year I replace all the filters, oil and do four wheel alignment. 50k on the clock no issues at all and I drive it up in the revs. In owning I’ve only replaced the rear springs thanks to a pot hole and I’ve had two rear tyres. That’s it. This year I’ll be doing the sparks as recommended.

I bought my 17 f80 comp dct in the 20k mile range. I'm at almost 95k miles now. My charge cooler failed at 49k. I've changed plugs, fluids, charge cooler, chargepipes (preventative), and brakes.
I have a front end thud (def suspension related. Undiagnosed specifically) when I hit bumps even at low speeds which doesn't seem to affect drive ability of the car. I also have hi speed brake wobble which new rotors will surely fix. Plan on keeping the car and driving a lot and hard for the foreseeable future

Most oem parts were upgraded to aftermarket for more reliability. It’s fair to say you will have touch on everything on this video and more by 100k. Upgrade to eu5 injector if you can and stick with stock intake. It will save misfire and hesitation on startup. Sick video FCP

@@jonasbaine3538 Not an expert but I guess it depends on usage.
The B58 is found in any 40i post 2015. Can't remember it's exact horsepower figures, but the least powerful version should be over 300 bhp.
It has great tuning potential too. Can't give exact limits, but best on online videos. It's tuned to 500-700 whp. It's a solid engine.
The S58 is simply put a high performance. From what I know it's superior to the B58 in literally every way since it's found in your G series M2, M3 and M4. It's just more expensive than the B58, because of the cars it's in.
      So in short.
      If you're wealthy: S58
If not, but still want good performance: B58

About the crank hub and it seeming to affect DCT cars more: I've seen surveys that do seem to indicate that DCT cars are affected by that part slipping about twice as often as manual cars. BUT! BMW sold 4 times as many DCT cars as manual. With that in mind it would seem to indicate that the DCT cars are actually half as likely to have this issue. While the DCT is capable of super fast shifts, it's also not going to have a clumsy/aggressive driver dumping the clutch on upshifts or ever having a non rev-matched downshift like you can with a manual. Just food for thought...

    • @ohtwo23

These cars are fairly reliable when it comes to high performance BMWs. 3+ years with about 50K miles done on mine with stock hub with a good mix up hard track driving too. The key is to keep it as stock as possible when it comes to tuning, and preventively upgrade the weak points with better than OEM parts such as the Wagner intercooler. Many aftermarket parts, whether suspension, cooling, etc honestly make the car worse but keep on top of maintenance and take care of the key items such as plastic chargepipes etc and you’re golden.

It is a very good engine, once the flaws are fixed.
I don't think it is 'the best' M engine though, as the newer S58 engine is a more developed, better, more modern engine.
I had the B58 in my previous car, an M140i. This was a fantastic engine, and after I tuned it to 455bhp/634nm, it was just a beast.

Great Video, I own an F82 M4 for a few months now and I love it, only 40.000 km, so hopefully not much maintenance in the near future, Request: could you do video on how to replace the rear bearings for this car, I have search a lot, but I cannot find any videoa on this anywhere, E46, E9x, but not for the F8x.

I would love to have a bmw m4 or m3 but I’ve seen too many bimmers broken down and the ones that are on the road are constantly getting work done … sooooooo expensive to keep them running cherry.

Have to pay play buddy. You shouldn't be looking at any performance car if you don't have the money or hand-skill. You see a lot of BMWs in general because they are the #1 selling luxury car in the world by volume.

Love performance but this is planned obsolescence, which is found pretty much every where now. 8 years ago I spoked to some Germans who worked on the automotive industry and also an American engineer who was based in Germany. They all told me that German cars are really built for 70 to 80k miles. That's crazy considering the price tag on these things

Would it be a good idea to periodically check the torque on the crank hub bolt to make sure that it is torqued down and tight? I have a 2018 M4 currently with 32000 miles on it. I am the second owner. Other than oil changes, l haven’t had any issues with the car, but that crank hub scares me. Thanks.

@tjackman Thanks man, I'm very grateful I get to own one. In my opinion, it's one of the best values on the second-hand market. They've come down in price compared to last year, and when you look at that price segment it's hard to beat. It's ultra low mile at under 8k, so fingers crossed I get to enjoy it worry free for years to come. Keep working at it, I never thought I'd get this, and if I can, you or anyone else surely can.

Why do 40i guys always try to use the word S58 in same sentence nobody says n55 s55. Your b58 shares literally nothing except for the shell of the short block only it's got nothing in common with S58 😂 nothing swaps overs nothing fits.
You guys really need to stop mentioning m motors with your b58 truck engine. It's strong it's cool it's not an M engine.
