Just bought 1 in blue 1999 with 24500 miles on it and it's a real clean one can't wait for a change in the weather and the road racing season in Ireland I'm sure it will get some admiration from the biking community here
I have had many R1s of different models but in my opinion the first ones are the best. Not the fastest, not the best handling by modern standards but they have an edge and a soul that newer ones lack. I still have my wite and red one. Beautiful.
There is nothing soft about the original R1. Pin the throttle in first gear and tell me it doesn't try to kill you lol. Nice bike man! I've always loved those things!
Chance the dämper and the "level-stick" from the swing arm (from the 2002-2004 R1"rn09" is perfect!) a stering-dämper and new tyre "Metzeler M9rr" on the first R1 and you think its a new bike!! no more big problem with "high-sider" no stering-shaking, go to secoud hand the dämper and level-stick secound hand market you kust pay around 120€ and a stering-dämper sec.ha. around 200€ thats 320€ for a new bike feehling, and the new tyres! Than you have a save first R1!! Sorry for my bad english! Reiner from Germany
Agreed, got a 99 R1 and there's no doubt the 98 changed everything, I also own a ZX7R and it killed the 750 class overnight, not to mention if you look at the engineering, it obliterated it's rivals by a milestone, first Yamaha to have LCD Speedo, swingarm design and stacked gearbox. It led to other manufacturers producing their own 1000cc machines of which we still see today
I got married & went over 20 plus years without a motorcycle! My friend has a BUSA! Kept seeing it & finally decided “I want a bike again too!” I found a 2001 R1 with only 6,100 miles on it! (Bought 2022 July) I’ve been happy driving it ! Mint condition runs like a scalded dog! I drove it yesterday! Pulled out on the highway & a vehicle topped the hill trying to pass me! The bike is so fast the vehicle didn’t get to pass! The bike picked up speed so fast I literally dusted them in 2nd -3rd gear!? Met at a stop light…. They blew their horn at me in anger as I made a right turn at the intersection!😅😂😂(they kept going straight) It was hilarious knowing they couldn’t catch me like they wanted to! People need to realize most 4 wheeled vehicles are not gonna beat a sport bike on the straight away! Get over yourselves 😅😂
No - the 98 was great but the 2K was better. It was the 3rd year of the same bike but with 150 changes - all subtle but some pretty major including reworked frame geometry and density not to mention re-valved and redesigned from forks to name just a few... Having owned both the 2000 was noticeably better to ride - smoother all around and it looked meaner with the more aggressive front and rear plastics. I didn't like the straight chopped rear fairing on my 98.... I like the angled 2000 much better. I will never ditch my 01 that i have now - I made the mistake of selling my 2000. Not this time..
Indeed, the 98/99 and 2K/01 are two different sets of machines. The 98/99 version is a wild animal. The 2K/01 is similar but refined. You cant just swap engine parts between the sets. Even the oil channels are different. Still have 2x 2Ks. Both in red, white and black. Carbed and analog, its just you and your machine. No computer, no traction controls, no launch control nor ABS that gets in between you and your machine.
Got the blue one. Love the red white one very much as well! The white has nice shading effect. The Ducate 916 was its ancestor imho. Also a beauty at its days :)
Previous owner (‘99) here. Have a good listen kids. Unfortunately, the carbs on this one require synching. No, that motor doesn’t sound “good”, regardless what the camera guy says. Rose colored glasses…This particular machine requires a tune-up. 👍 Gas tank would bruise your chest when tucking…but otherwise incredible machines.
Hi man Im Sixto Croes from Aruba in the Caribbean N.A. i bought one but i had a dream to get one. its my first bike they sad its a trash, feeling bad they sad that its a bike that have only the body and engine and of cours 2 weels. Dont have tank Carburator seats shield gauge anyway its dus not have much what you think shall i keep it or restore it. Thnx
very common and very expensive to fix ..but the bike is sooo good my 02 is having second gear issues intermittently i will be doing the repairs and refreshing the engine while in there this spring
I rode one, bought original in 98, over 20years, it can be as docile as a pussy cat, or it can launch you like an aircraft carrier catapult. I just traded in recently for an 05 R1. The R1, any R1, is like flying an F-16 through canyons, on open rural back roads. Some of the greatest experiences of my life. I rode the YZF-1000, and FZR-1000s previously.
Had a 2000 model, absolutely blistering machine,(in the day),regret not buying the first one, albeit i test rode one on an open day, different story and time sadly!WHEEEELY? LMAO
Been restoring a parted out 99 R1. Finding parts. Taken a lot of time and it came back to life after doing a valve job to restore compression and replacing the entire wiring harness, spark plugs and caps and pick up, battery and switches to have it have spark. It's been in the shop for months, but confident it will be road worthy again.
@@AZperfcarlife if not done already have the transmission worked on 2nd gear will pop out if you are mid range or higher and hammer the throttle it needs a shim kit had to get mine fixed found out very common issue with the 99 r1s

The ZX7 was slow, and the 2000 GSXR 750 beat the R1 and the Honda 929 that year in topspeed🤷♂️
@@foxkill7 it came out 2 years after the R1, no wonder it was better.

That's the thing. I think many prefer the original unrefined version BEFORE Yamaha got to work taming the bike and settling it down.

Mate I've have mine since 1999
Ya don't need a damper
They are the best bike ever
Basics simple simply the best
Never had a damper on my 98, blitzed rural back roads in Vermont, only got into a head shake, once, rode it out, easily.
