    DISCLAIMER: I am not paid to promote any specific products or brands; I just use the products I find work best for me through my experiences. There is no reason for me to promote a bad product, as then I would not enjoy using it, not like the result on my model, and not be proud of publicizing it in a video. There's also no point in me doing this to keep up relations with a company if the only benefit would be getting more of the same products that I didn't like. I have not used every product out there, but from what I have used, I keep using the products I like, and that's why I use them in my videos. You can use whatever other products you would like to and you can feel that they are better - that is your opinion, and is perfectly fine by me, thus I hope that feeling is reciprocated.

    I know its several years late but to answer your question about the roof plug. The 4 bolt plug was a Miag feature added from May 1944 - Sep/Oct 1944. The solid plug from the inside was an Alkett feature from the same time frame.

    Very detailed, in depth and thorough kit review of this interesting version of the StuG III. Your wealth of knowledge on this vehicle is greatly appreciated for those who are looking to improve their eye for detail regarding StuG's. This will be booked marked for future reference should this kit find its way into the stash. I really like the American captured version livery, as I assume the Olive Drab would be field applied and thus not as durable as the standard factory baked on Olive Drab, and therefore might give way for some really interesting weathering and chipping possibilities with dunkelgelb showing through.
    Excellent work Evan, cheers!

    I was so disappointed that the muzzle brake featured on the box art, is not what is inside the kit. The muzzle brake is the early war version, which forces the builder to look for after market parts or try to scratch build something. Why Dragon can't get this right, I don't know, but the muzzle brake is the first thing we look at in photos to judge when a stug photo was taken during the war. They include the wrong one in this kit.

    • @Panzermeister36
      @Panzermeister36  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. I had to purchase about 8 aftermarket StuG gun barrels recently to correct all my Dragon StuG kits in the stash. It's disappointing to see that Dragon never fixed this on any of their StuG kits.

    squash some heat cured FIMO between 2 sheets of baking paper and roll it out thin oblong for rear plate.Peel off one side,pattern/damage it then cure gently/quickly in low heat oven 5mins...home made attak zimm,thats tuff and bendy and cuttable.I make it so you can see through it if you hold it up to light at the joins in patterns.As thick or thin as you like.It looks good thinner at top getting fatter toward bottom...there i finally explained it.

    Great kit and great video, but what color are you going to paint it, because I doubt it was painted Olive Drab, by the looks of the original picture, I think Dragon was confused with the Ersatz StuG which was painted Olive Drab by the Germans.

    Looks like a great kit. Only one thing though. The main gun barrel is not slide molded. If it were, you would see a “bump” in the tree just like there is for the MG-42, which is obviously slide molded.

    Thanks for the review Evan....on part MA6 or 8, I would use the smooth one, it's just a flange that goes under the engine intakes, as I'm sure you know. Never seen any with non-slip attached though. Dragon does some weird things from time to time, but either way don't see why it would need the non-slip? It's actually a part of the fenders.

    • @villesaarenketo2506
      @villesaarenketo2506 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tamiya's finnish Stug has that non-slip one and so does the actual tank. I've seen it IRL.

    Helpful Thanks. Do you have any info on Stug G Dragon kit 6581 ?

    • @Panzermeister36
      @Panzermeister36  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've built that kit twice. Its a good build but if you care about accuracy it's all wrong. It needs the tool locations changed, and zimmerit added, plus the hull is a MIAG factory build while the rest is Alkett factory, which is just weird. You can make it an accurate vehicle from about April to May 1943 with the stuff in the box though.

    • @infozencentre
      @infozencentre 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that. I thought the premise that Dragon has for calling it the September production is that Zimmerit application basically stopped in September? Since Stugs were often recovered and field repaired and turned into hybrids do you think i'ts a reasonable explanation for the Miag/Alkett combination?

  • @thedeadlinger6992
    @thedeadlinger6992 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Concrete armor was used against some HE weapons, like the Panzerfaust (captured by allied forces), and maybe, just a tiny bit maybe, against HE Rounds, but concrete armor never proved to protect against AP Rounds.

    • @Panzermeister36
      @Panzermeister36  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheDeadLinger HEAT/shaped charge/hollow charge weapons like the Panzerfaust will cut right through concrete like it's nothing. The only way to protect against those warheads is to either deflect the jet of molten copper with specially shaped ceramic inserts between armored plates, or spaced armour to allow the jet to dissipate. Concrete will simply shatter during the initial impact of the shell, and therefore will provide no resistance to the Munroe Effect. Arguably, the shattering of the concrete would draw energy from kinetic energy shells such as standard AP, but still not as much as normal steel would. So concrete would have no effect on HEAT since the initial impact only serves to detonate the shaped charge, so drawing energy from the initial impact does nothing.

  • @andreaslarka1633

    The biggest problem with this and the other zimmerited Dragon StuG kits is the inaccurate front armor, apparently based on their early StuG kit. However, in the kit is also included accurate(ish) non-zimmerited parts that can be used as a guide to correct the zimmerited ones or - maybe a better idea - that can be used together with an Atak zimmerit set to create a decent front armor. But used as-is and out of the box the zimmerited front parts are IMHO quite horrible!
    For some reason Dragon has chosen to make the interlocked front armor with the higher hull sides (see page 100 in the Müller-Zimmerman book). No problem per say, but you'll need to check your references twice before building. They used the same front for their "May 1943" StuG, which of course is completely wrong as this feature arrived almost one year later! Quite an easy fix for any modeler, just do some cutting and adding of styrene and you are done.
    When modeling a kit with the interlocked hull and 80mm front armor one should also use the interlocked rear armor, the part you were wondering about at the 45 minutes mark. They should also have the similar but non-zimmerited part in the box.
    To my knowledge most of the zimmerited StuGs did not have zimmerit on the rear deck air intakes. Of course with German stuff one can never say never, but one should check ones references and pictures of the StuG one is building.
    What more? If the plastic parts are the same as in the 6633 kit the muzzle brake is from the early kit, i.e. wrong for this time-frame. Go Dragon...

    • @Panzermeister36
      @Panzermeister36  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh my, hail the StuG expert! I am a big fan of your site sir; your work is awesome.
      I believe they reference the correct muzzle break but I'll have to double check. The bow armour is only 50mm thick yeah, but it's not too noticeable compared to other issues. I might use the kit 80mm bow plate and then get an Atak set for the zimmerit there, on the rear hull, and on the fender fronts and rears. As for the toolbox, I'm referencing this photo in particular:
      www.google.ca/search?tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1536&bih=759&ei=QL_LWouxCMSUtQXAgproBg&q=stug+iii+g+zimmerit&oq=stug+iii+g+zimmerit&gs_l=img.3...903.7127.0.7464.38.14.2.22.0.0.92.978.13.13.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..1.12.820.0..0j35i39k1j0i30k1j0i5i30k1j0i8i30k1j0i24k1.0.ljnukkULqk0#imgrc=mQeXZMwsenu5NM:

    • @andreaslarka1633
      @andreaslarka1633 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your nice words. I myself think the biggest problem up front is the too long sloped upper armor. When you notice it you can't unsee it...
      As for the toolbox I did some research after (!) writing my comment and I did find some pics of a zimmerited box. Hence the edited comment. Thus you are right and I was wrr... I was wro... I mean, I was the opposite of right... ;) We learn as long as we live!

      Dack Hacksaw : I do know a thing or two about StuGs, but I quite seldom comment on models or reviews. This due to the fact that way too many "reviews" are too simple and the model is more or less judged on how "cool" it is...
      But when I see a serious review like this where the reviewer clearly has done his homework I might comment. Not to show off (or count rivets) but to exchange thoughts and info.

      i bought the new ryefield panther w/int. for £62.A lot of money.But compared to modern Dragon kits that's only about £10 more for a 72 step 1500 part build with 25 options,clear hull and turret,LEAD wire and an ABER sized PE fretS.It is worth the money considering even Tamiya with RB metal barrel and PE wouldnt be too much cheaper.I hope its a sign of things to come.I just ordered a Universal/bren gun carrier from Riich models for £30.Looks a challenge and not crazy expensive.Happy building.
