Why is Pakistan expelling Afghan refugees? | Inside Story

  • Hundreds of thousands of Afghans are being forced to leave Pakistan as part of a government crackdown.
Many have lived there for decades and consider it their home.
But the Pakistani government blames Afghans for a surge in attacks by armed groups.
Human Rights groups say the deportations violate international law and that many refugees face dangers-- if they're forced to return to Afghanistan.
    Is this politically motivated?
And how will Taliban officials deal with it?
    Presenter: James Bays
    Guests:
Nilofer Afridi Qazi - Social Worker by trade who's also a Public Policy Specialist.
Faiz Zaland - Professor of Political Science at Kabul University, who's also the Chief Executive of the Peace, Development and Democracy Organisation.
Devon Cone - Senior Advocate for Women and Girls at Refugees International.

Don't burn your neighbor's house or they will come to your house! I am sure you guys are young to talk, about 30 or 50 years! Pakistan itself is 70 years old! Pakistan's Punjab, and Sind is a centre of terrorism created by east India company to serve the colonial ambitions of western powers. The Pakistan military and establishment is supported, trained, and funded by the British. The brits divided two nations "India and Afghanistan" to make up for a base that can continue terrorist operations. This is no longer the case for Pakistan! They can't milk the western governments anymore and can't create "terrorism" to attract funding from the west. The new world powers in Asia are China, Russia and India who are aware of Pakistan's existence! Propaganda against poor people of Afghanistan no longer works. The whole world knows that Pakistan is a terrorist training camp! from extremist Arabs, to being a base for extremist groups, and the leader of Al Qaida! So, everyone knows what Pakistan military is doing! Pakistan will and is in the verge of breaking apart! The military leaders are using the same tactic that right wing politicians use in the west use! blame the migrants for all the wrongdoing, shortcoming, and corruption of military. Good luck to the people of both nations! also, there is a long distance between Arab countries and Afghanistan! if no one knew geography! also, Parts of Pakistan historically culturally belongs to Afghanistan and Punjab and Sind is India! this is history lesson 101.

They are sending Afghans who are poor and needy. This is against Allah's command to migrate and the Sunnah of the Prophet PUBH to welcome refugees. Their strategy is not Islamic but purely economical for worldly gain. Anyway they fail to realize that when you do good - God returns in abundances. Their strategies are purely materialistic . So, let them have their plans, God too has a plan and God is the best of planners.

And secondly, it's not only Pakistan, Iran, Germany and other countries that are also sending these illegal afghanies. Why no one talking about them?

It seems you didn't watch the program. After 2007, PAK no longer issued POR cards. Thus, there was no way fit them to obtain citizenship. Even if an Afghan man marries a Pakistani woman, he cannot obtain citizenship. Only an Afghan woman marrying a Pakistani man can get citizenship. Afghan men married to Pakistani women now must return, this will cause family separation.

02- These refugees have been in Pakistan for more than 35 years, Pakistan provide them humanitarian assistance with internal resources as well as from the support of International community.
03- Now, Pakistan think that some proxies in Afghanistan including TTP are the security threat to the people and Pakistan state, it has been proven that TTP has been involved in terrorist activities in Pakistan for killing civilians, security personnels and destroying the infrastructure.
04- Pakistan have been providing solid proof to international community that Afghanistan land has been used for terrorist activities in Pakistan.
05- International Community and UN should come forward and recognize the legit Govt. in Afghanistan to build peace, re-build infrastructure that has been destroyed during wars in Afghanistan and empower local people for a long term and long lasting peace and stability.

Most of the comments here miss the actual point.
1.Even Afghans, including the Taliban, dont argue that PAK is not allowed to send the refugees back to AFG. In fact, now there is peace and stability in AFG and most of the refugees should return and develop AFG.
    2. The problem is how PAK goes about the process and the Afghan man alludes to it.
    3. The return should be better managed. 10K returnees a day is too many to handle and organize, especially by a poor and war damaged country like AFG. PAK doesnt work with the Afghan govt to better manage the returns like Iran and Turkey do.
    4. The refugees should be allowed to take their property, vehicles, and livestock with them but PAK takes it all and only allows them about $170. That is theft and against Islam and international law.
    5. On top of that, PAK forces every person to pay $830 exit fee, regardless if they return to AFG or leave for another country bc of asylum, etc. When they don't have the money, they jail family members or force them to take debt. This is against Islam and international law.
    6. Even ppl with legal documents are forcefully deported, forced to pay bribes, or jailed and assaulted.
    6. Due to the haphazard and unorganized manner of return, families get separated, ppl lose their children, women are returned while their husbands, sons, etc., are jailed or vice versa.
    7. Instead of getting upset, Pakistanis should ask their govt to manage the return in a more humane manner so there will be less criticism.
    8. Finally, the international community, instead of just pointing their fingers at an economically struggling country like PAK, should recognize the govt of AFG, lift all sanctions and help them rebuild their country so more refugees will want to return to their own country. The majority of Afghans wanting to leave AFG now do so for economic reasons and the west actually hinders econimc growth in AFG.

This issue of Afghan refugees needs to be seen in it's factual perspective.
Back in late seventies, millions of these brethren refugees were welcomed here.
Now, the realities are almost completely changed. From the last couple of years, Pakistan is facing worst financial crunch of it's history. Secondly, Pakistan is the target of a lethal campaign of terrorism, both in terms of loss of precious human lives as well as a constant threat to law & order situation and stability. Every time the responsibility of these inhumane attacks is claimed by the terrorist groups operating from the soil of Afghanistan.
It is because of these compelling factors, Pakistan is now left with no choice but to ask the refugees to return back to Afghanistan where there is a stable government of their own.

There doesn't exist any law called "International law ". If you are powerful enough then there is no International law to be followed. Israel attacked Iranian consulate in Syria and this Israeli attack was a brazen violation of International law. America after 9/11 attacked Iraq in clear violation of International law. The question is whether Pakistan should follow the so-called International law or ensure its security? The answer is very clear that the Afghans are no more refugees and they must go back to their own country and Pakistan cannot afford to bleed at their hands.

As a Pakistani, I must say that I disagree with this policy. This kind of mass deportation of Afghan families is unacceptable. As the panelists said, many of them have been born here and have been living in Pakistan for more than 40 years with established businesses and jobs. Even if some had to be deported, they should've had a strict criteria where those individuals were actual security threats but deporting in this way cannot be supported.
The newer arrivals of 800,000 Afghans since 2021 could've been vetted more strongly since they had not yet developed any real ties to Pakistan. Many of those Afghans who served in the security forces or NATO translators could've been sent to Western countries. But nobody has the right to disrupt families' lives in this way. But our "Permanent Powers" apparently don't care about humanity or human rights, unfortunately.

No country of the world like Pakistan has accommodated Afghan people specifically after 1979 Soviet war. People of Afghanistan rush to Pakistan without documents and settled and most of them having Pakistani nationality permanently and i am the eye witness of many families in may area. Now Pakistan will welcome Afghan people those will visit Pakistan on passport like other countries and it is need of time and to counter terrorism and to stable Pakistan.

I am a Pakistani ex-pat who visited the country recently for several month. I had a chance to look at the reality on the ground. In all honesty, 99% of all security issues in the country are caused by the very people who call themselves Pakistanis, who otherwise swear to love and protect the country. The self-proclaimed patriotic elite creates the circumstances that that create lawlessness, corruption, and much social, political and economic turmoil in the country. The police and other government officials see their positions as venues to forcibly take bribes, harass innocent people, and create rule of the jungle. The powerful shamelessly use government resources for personal gains. All this in the name of the country. The Afghans, on the other hand, were mostly peaceful, most hard working people in the country.
