I love all of the pieces in your sketchbook! Your color combinations always look so beautiful and balanced. You have inspired me to try abstract art. I was wondering if you feel you have been inspired by aboriginal Australian art, because the dots and dashes you make remind me of the way they paint a lot of dots in their paintings. I love their artwork and yours, too! I'm glad you were safe when applying the fixative, outdoors and wearing a highly protective mask. Your cat is so cute - I just hope he/she didn't actually drink any paint water! Thanks for sharing this wonderful sketchbook. 💙😺🖌🎨🧡
It's really interesting how you used different supplies to see what you liked. I thoroughly enjoyed this sketchbook tour and your explanations. Thank you!
So happy i finally discovered your channel. There are not many real mixed media channels out there and this is the direction my art is taking me. Subscribed!❤
One of my favourite things is looking at other artists sketchbooks; yours is inspirational. I particularly like the pages that remind me of the Australian bush colours. Thank you for sharing your sketchbook.
We are in the middle of a heat wave here in SW Michigan so spending more time indoors right now. I am catching up on your FB posts etc. I am really enjoying 5-part your series this week. I LOVE your trick of using thin masking tape to make a perfect grid. (I have been measuring to get that look and your trick seems SO much easier.) I've also been using white pencils and white China markers but am now anxious to try out the white POCA pens you mention. THANK YOU for sharing your great ideas and sketchbooks.
So inspiring and informative Laura thank you. I've been trying to work out what kind of sketchbook i should get and am looking forward to the 5 day elements challenge. 😂
I loved all of your sketches. And even tho they are sketches, I could easily imagened them on a wall! Thank you for sharing. I just started following you, and so far I love eveything I watched! Keep up the good work!
I love the feeling that comes from filling in a sketch book completely. It’s such a great feeling of accomplishment. Beautiful work Laura. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve just found you and really happy that I have! I love your thoughtful and beautiful work and your way - clear and calm - of presenting it. The double page spreads in the Seawhite book work so well - worth getting the super-thick 350gsm paper. I love bright colours but really responded on an emotional level to your gorgeous neutral spreads. Thank you. I’ve subscribed and will look out for your upcoming April challenge.
So lovely to read your comment, I feel the same way about the earthy spreads. Just something about them resonates with me. Not long now until the challenge :)
Thanks so much, Laura! Your Sketchbook Tour was so inspiring and your tips are helpful going further! In there are so tasteful compositions and color combinations. I loved it.😍
Thank you, I like your sketchbook. I am teaching myself watercolor painting here in California. Your mixing mediums inspires me. I was a oil painter when a child, young adult & maybe I will find that again, but watercolors are beautiful as they run, blend. Now I am trying to move from representational works to abstract, finding myself blocked. Going to get out sketchbook. I hope I can find the 350gsm you use.
I’ve been in an art stump where I have ideas but I can’t execute them. So this video made me think I’ll go back to the watercolor and spontaneous mixed media to take some of the pressure off
Spontaneous mixed media is a great place to linger while ideas are forming and sketchbooks are a great substrate or loose paper. Have fun with it & let it all out!!
Thank you! Yes, I do! From time to time, I come across a page I really love, and I take it out and pop it in a frame. I have no qualms about doing that at all!
I love the play and color combinations that you used in this sketchbook. I thought I was the only one that leaves a couple of pages blank. 🙄 I have several 'finished' sketchbooks but sometimes I too go back and add more to various drawings or mixed media pieces. Some of my sketchbooks span several years. It is interesting to me to see how my style and use of color changes over time. Thank you for another inspiring video.
I have my nearly filled sketchbooks in front of me to remind me how much I have achieved AND what is possible. - keep going I tell myself Do something, write notes, draw a line, paint a blob stick ephemera
This was beautiful to watch. I love the muted brown pages, the two page spread really spoke to me for some reason as did the ocean inspired pages somewhat but not quite in the same way. I know I can’t paint in your style but I love the beauty and the wonder of nature that you can show through the very thoughtful distillation of both your mediums and choices. This experimentation book is no longer a Sketchbook but an Art book in its own right. Thank you for sharing this video.
Thank you Miriam for such a lovely and thoughtful comment. I felt very excited and at home with those pages too, the return to more muted colours and nature-inspired spreads felt really good!!
@@LauraHornArt Do you know Laura, that is a very encouraging comment right there, about those pages. I have found that sometimes after trying new things, a return to old loves is often enhanced in unexpected and fresh ways.
Noted! And yes, they were my favourite pages too! I felt like I found what I was looking for towards the end of the sketchbook. The Ecoline Markers were a real surprise, I wish they were lightfast.
Looking through your sketchbook is really inspiring. Was this work directly related to your most recent class? I love watercolours still and took one of your early classes to help me dive in a few years back. One suggestion for using gouache is to use it instead of markers to create some of your top layer mark making. White gouache and a small detailed brush instead of your usual white posca or gel pen for instance. I love gouache for it's matte, opaque appearance. Like watercolour, you have to find your groove with it. I'm enjoying your regular posts on TH-cam and looking forward to your upcoming challenge. Rachelle, Gold Coast xo
Thanks Rachelle, it’s a bit of a mix of ideas from my last two classes. I have tried the gouache in that way, but haven’t quite developed the knack for it! I’ll keep trying 🎨😊
Laura, I enjoyed this a lot. I’m also a watercolor artist and find my sketchbooks such a valuable tool. But, where do you store your sketchbooks and how often do you go to them for reference? ClaudiaSJI
Hi Claudia, glad you enjoyed the video. I just store my sketchbooks on a shelf in my studio or even just on my table. I use them regularly. Some artists don't, but I find reference material to be a really important part of my process and often use sketchbooks to inform my paintings. I find just flicking through a sketchbook is a great way to get inspired and start a new painting.
Hi Laura - only just discovered your channel so please forgive me if you have addressed this elsewhere, but what mixed media fixatives would you recommend, if you use any other than the grease proof paper? or do you find that the Sennelier pastel fixative works for all media? I have forever been hunting for a good mixed media fixing option that wouldn’t stain some of the media or melt others. Everything seems to negatively affect something!
The tour was very hard to view. Too much camera flipping back and forth. Making one feel carsick 😢 would just love to see the artwork. Instead of multiple views and angles. Though the art work was very good
Good idea, taking pix of tree bark for shape and texture inspiration. Thank you!
Beautiful.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the tour!

Glad you've been enjoying the videos, I never have the patience for measuring grids, the tape makes it so much easier!!

Loving your sketchbook tour! :)
Gorgeous pages in your sketchbook 😊
Tree trunks to inspire ark making. Fantastic idea!
Glad you enjoyed! Trees are just so inspiring for all kinds of art-making! I love them, and I am fortunate to live in a very tree-filled area 🌳🌳🌳
I loved all of your sketches. And even tho they are sketches, I could easily imagened them on a wall! Thank you for sharing. I just started following you, and so far I love eveything I watched! Keep up the good work!

Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved this video😁 Have never used a sketchbook, but it looks so much fun! I am really looking forward to the free sketch challenge🤩🥰😍
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the challenge, not long now!
really love the expressive and very original way you abstract the elements from nature, water, trees, landscape. this sketchbook was wonderful to see.
Thank you so much, somehow it always comes back to nature!!
I loved this 💜

Really enjoyed this tour thru your sketch book. Do you ever decide to pull out a particular page and just frame it? Your work is truly lovely!
Thank you! Yes, I do! From time to time, I come across a page I really love, and I take it out and pop it in a frame. I have no qualms about doing that at all!
Loved this. Thanks for sharing ❤
I love every single video you put out!!!!!
Aww, thanks so much Peggy!
Love it all. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I love your videos! More please!

Thank you. Your sketchbook is amazing! I can't wait for the challenge.
Thank you, the challenge is going to be so fun on TH-cam!
gorgeous hands and nails! thank you for sharing! I'm psyched to take your class soon ;)
Thank you, it's funny how people notice your hands in TH-cam videos, better put some hand cream on! Hope to see you in class soon :)
Thankyou 😊 I am enjoying your tutorials, I am doing mixed media and just love the not knowing the outcome of the finish project. Greetings from UK
Wonderful! The freedom of mixed-media is what drew me in, so many possibilities, and there's really no wrong way to do things! Have fun with it x

Thank you, I don’t know what it is about the last few pages. I have another sketchbook that has a few blanks in it! Must get to that one soon 😊
Loved your sketchbook so much! 😮 very inspiring!
Thank you! I'm so glad you found it inspiring!
Awesome

It’s so good to keep them close by and to just add little bits here and there when you have spare minutes!
Here AGAIN.since m previous comment I have done loss of drawing stamping and gluebook.
Yes here again n delighted to be. I am enjoying writing notes in different languages.
I am glad to be here n nice to read my own comments@@LauraHornArt
It was a beautiful video. I love the sketchbook art. ❤
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome. Very Inspiring Laura!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
You can add a layer of matte medium without disturbing your work with a gelli plate and this will fix the page
Thanks, that’s a great tip. I never ever thought of that!
👏👏👏👏

I find myself leaving the last few pages too
Would love to see a short video on the eco line and water combo! Those were my favorite pages!

Your limited palettes, taste in colours and your simplified style wow me every time!

It is very tricky! I mostly use the Sennelier one and find that it works pretty well on the other media too.
