Bach composed Unaccompanied Cello suites between 1717-1723 in Köthen, Germany. These most interpreted and known Cello Works, consist of 6 suites. (BWV1007, BWV1008, BWV1009, BWV1010, BWV1011, BWV1012)
Solo (unaccompanied) suites consist of six movements/parts: prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, minuets or bourrées or gavottes, gigue
Each suite starts with prelude and all the other movements are based on baroque dance types.

Took my son, and my daughter's boyfriend to hear him in Toronto last 2 months ago (yes, things happen other than Rob Ford). He didn't play any Bach (we have the violincello suites on cd) but did a wonderful Shostakovich suite - the notes and chords emerged from nothingness - what playing!

I've been playing the cello since 1960, and I can assure you: Bach wrote suites for unaccompanied cello. Britten wrote suites for unaccompanied cello. Reger wrote suites for unaccompanied cello.... Shostakovich wrote a sonata for cello and piano, and a concerto for cello and orchestra. But a Shostakovich cello suite? It doesn't exist!
