I absolutely love this piece. Had the good fortune to play it with a very good cellist but this is the ultimate recording. I haven't found anybody who comes close to Natalia Gutman in conveying this darkness and desperation.
Incandescently wonderful. This is a masterpiece and Natalia Gutman is possibly the most ideal cellist (there is also Heinrich Schiff). the work requires the most direct and unflinching approach to its tragedy, violence and ultimately grace. It also requires an equally magisterial pianist and Lobanov with Gutman (and Paul Gulda with Schiff) provide this. Elisso Wirsaladse another dimension....
There was a recording put out featuring Alexandre Ivaskin and Tamas Vesmas in NZ that was very good too. I have to say this recording here though is superb - Pleased to have heard it.
Whilst I agree with the quality of the Gutman and Schiff recordings, may i also suggest that you should listen to Maria Kliegel's ? Schnittke praised her interpretations and, in my view, they are indeed worth studying. Less fire than Gutman, less depth than Schiff but an amazing sound and wonderful meditative mood. Enjoy !
Most profound play of this masterpiece I've ever heard.

Schnittke, for me, is the greatest composer of the late 20th century, and a beacon to guide the 21st.
this may be my favorite Schnittke composition, which is saying a lot. and a great version, excellent audio quality. Thanks!
I love Schnittke cause he's the perfect postmodern lovechild of German and Russian musical ideals
Greatness , simply .
Просто -Спасибо большое
и ИМ,и вам!
Striking music, very powerful.

thank you! this is fantastic!
Gutman y Lobanov hicieron una gran versión. Pienso que hoy la suya es canónica.
This sonata really is Gutman's. Schnittke wrote it for her; no-one else plays it like she does (not even Schiff!)

I love everything about this! Does anyone know where I can find the CD of this recording?
