You have to hand it to him - the sheer range of the man. One minute he's in the 1720's with Pantomime and the next he's doing a 1920's Charleston - and both of them so exquisitely orchestrated.
Let's not forget that this particular recording is an "arrangement". Frank Strobel, arr. I say this only to give thanks to the tireless and skilled arrangers who plumb the very depths of their own souls to give life to a new arrangement of original materials.

My first experience of Schnittke was many years ago : (K)ein Sommernachtstraum (1985). I couldn't get the music out of my head. From sweet to sinister to bombastic, to circus and back to sweet and delicate - the mind altering dissonance in his music is beyond words and stays in the mind. His (K)ein Sommernachtstraum (1985). has recently been used, along with his Requiem in the ballet Dracula. The performance by Northern Ballet in Leeds in the UK at the Usher Hall was perfection; the dancers, the choreography, stage sets/design/costumes, actually complemented the incredible music. If you can find this performance (no others come up to this level of excellence) you will never forget it. I was lucky enough to record the complete ballet and am completely addicted to it.
I didn't know that Suite in Old Style used in this film. Schnittke is a genius composer! His music transmits all shades of the modern multifaceted world.
What I find amazing is Schnittke's range of styles. You would swear most of his pieces were written not just by different composers, but also totally different musical eras.
I'll get my dentist to play this when I next have to see him. It must be odd being in a job where so many people are frightened to see you.

Fun mix of guitar and classical. In the beginning maybe Jazz and classic. Definitely unusual music, and with a gentle tone from Schnittke. But most classic and so much unexpected.

Actually the film score came first (1965) and then Schnittke transformed it into the Suite in Old Style (1972).

Holy crap. So Adventure of a Dentist was filmed by Elem Klimov. The man who also filmed 'Come and See'. I can't believe it. Did Schnittke not score for Come and See as well?
No, 'cause he was stroked by the illness. Music was composed by the organ player Oleg Yanchenko.

По сравнению с множеством иных советских фильмовых музЫк, эта на удивление невыразительна - просто абсолютно незапоминающийся фон. Интересно, а сам автор чувствовал разницу между своими потугами и классическим кино-наследием, ну скажем, Шостаковича и Свиридова?
Явственно видно, что автор (как это часто бывает) не заморачивался вдохновенным погружением в киноматерьял (который вполне никакой!) а просто воткнул в него уже нацарапанные штюкены в квази-барочном стайле, которые очевидно писал то-ли в качестве упражнений, то-ли от делать нефига. И смешно и грустно, ей-богу!
