  • This week we take a look at our buddy Sam's swing. Sam has been reforming his softball swing over the last year or so. From a baseball swing, to a big uppercut swing, to, now, a flat bat path swing, he has put it in the work to keep improving and it shows. Watch as we break down the swing and get feedback from the man himself!

Great stuff! If you're looking for new ideas on videos, I'd love to see one on how you guys approach hitting in USSSA vs ASA. There isn't a lot of stuff out there on this. Grip, stance and location in the box, timing, type of bat used (heavier vs lighter, end load vs balanced), etc. I'm most curious in how the pitch arc difference between the two changes your approach. Do you think the USSSA grip that most of the pros use (drop and overlap fingers) plays as well in ASA? Is contact more important in ASA due to the height of the pitch? Am I overthinking all of this?

Great idea! We'll definitely add that one to the list. As a brief answer, I would say the approach is the same for both but strategies definitely vary. We are still primarily focused on getting on base but there are definitely some adjustments that have to be made with the varying pitch heights and strike zones. Great questions!

That guy looks like he is ready for some big league hits to go along with his big league plays

For sure! Gotta to love it when a guy is never satisfied and always trying to get better.

Just from watching the first swing a few times.
You are limiting your hips by 1 starting with back foot turned away from you and 2 by stepping in towards the plate.

Agreed. They talked about it a little on the first one and talked about being thinking about hitting oppo, but the second one looks almost exactly the same and would have gotten more barrel with a step straight to the pitcher even with the late swing. The 3rd one that was actually hit oppo has even more step towards the plate to an amount that looks more than is needed to me (almost on the hands and get close to stepping in front of the plate) so I think focusing on baseline stepping straight to the pitcher would definitely be an easy consistency fix.

Need to find a place that sells that rug because some the batters boxes at some fields are really bad.. lol

I totally agree. When batters boxes don't get taken care of they are terrible to hit out of. You can find these online but they can be expensive. Probably worth it if you know it won't get stolen or torn up.

When the mats get torn up they are even worse than a rough dirt box IMO, but they are definitely solid until then.

Sam loves the game of softball and shows it on his face while he is out there playing!
