Compound and polish are really determined by what paint you have (hard or soft). For hard paints, CarPro clearcut is your best choice for a one step. For softer paints, the Griots line is your best route. Also, when doing a correction, 3-4 dime size drops is all you need. But make sure you wear a light on your head to see when the swirls are gone. You can look through the compound as its breaking down. Going up and down makes nice designs but you want to keep going until the swirls are gone. If you want a line of products that will handle any paint you come across, CarPro ClearCut, Essence, Fixer and Reflect. Cant go wrong!
@@poppaluv simple. Single stage paint will bleed when you polish it, because there is no clearcoat on it so the paint comes off on the pad. Your year is single stage. @@308sir nothing. Whereas a random orbital goes in mini circles over an area of a larger circle, hence random orbital rotation. A rotary, is like a drill.
I try to keep up with protection on my vehicles. A) I wash, B)I clay- with Mothers SpeedClay 2.0 C)I polish- but I dont use a full polish product. I use a Ryobi 6 inch 18V orbital buffer which I own a cordless model & a corded one. My Polish of choice is Mothers Micro-Polishing Glaze (Step 2). Then, D) my favorite final product is Meguiars Hi-Tech Yellow Wax (#26). If you Clay with anything. Use Mothers Step 2. Use Meguiars #26. You will have a super smooth, shiny vehicle. Try it!
I have to say… This video was super useful! I’m glad to have seen someone properly explaining how to use an orbital. I actually own the same one for my business so this is great!!
A great "2-step" compound/polish is Menzerna IP 2000. I used it on my black 300C; and it really cut down the amount of time that I used to take in working out swirls. I applied it with a Griots Garage DA random orbital polisher and Lake Country pads. Afterward, the Menzerna, you can either apply a fine polish, before going to the wax finish, or go straight to the wax finish. It depends on what results you're looking for.

Wipe down after polishing with a IPA product (isopropyl alcohol) to remove polishing oils and residues. I like to use Carpro eraser. That will leave it with a squeeky clean surface ready to accept your favorite ceramic coating/sealant/wax
Sonax is my favorite line of polishes. The cutmax is amazing for heavy defects. The Sonax 04-06 is like perfect finish but 04-06 is made specifically for DA polishers and perfect finish is made for rotary but they both work great on either machine. For really hard paint the best is the Rupes UHS polish and pad combo hands down. You want to be careful using a tape line for a 50/50 because it can create a hard line in the paint that can be difficult to remove. Some polishes will be less effective when used with a detail spray because they were formulated to work without any other chemicals. Some clay bars will break down faster if a soap is used as a lubricant. Detail spray does not get the paint perfectly clean because they contain polymers such as gloss enhancers and lubricants. IPA solution or a paint prep spray is best. I have a youtube channel where I talk about some of this stuff, hopefully it will help you get better results but it looks like you got pretty good results anyway! Cheers!
One step polishing.. Meguiar's Ultimate Polish on green Buff and Shine pads works great. Nice cut, great finish, super easy wipe off. I start with three pea sized drops, and reload with one or two. I have a few little tips I've picked up that have really helped. First is just a suggestion I wish I'd done: test on a not so nice car before trying on your really nice car. My first was the trunk lid of my nice bmw and in retrospect is was scary. But I was lucky. Other tips: on first use of the pad work the polish into the pad by hand to "prime" it. After every few sections, blow the pad out to get any picked up grit out. Polishes: Retail: Meg's ultimate compound is closer to a professional polish. Breaks down nicely and doesn't really need a follow-up with polish. Will remove some scratches nicely and leave a great finish. Ultimate polish is good too if you just want to enhance the look. "Professional": 3d one is both a compound and polish. Intended for microfiber pads but will work with foam and not too aggressive when used with foam pad. Jescar has some good stuff too. I love their correcting compound but it's aggressive so not really what you're asking for. To be honest though, for beginners I always recommend meguiars ultimate compound and polish. They are "safer" dumbed down versions of their professional line. The compound would have knocked out what you were working on on this car in one section pass of 5 passes. More pressure for first two passes, then less and less over next three. The abrasives break down after first two passes, then the next three passes polish more and more as you let up pressure each pass until the third (5th total) pass is just weight of polisher Use either their "cutting" yellow pad or an orange medium cut pad (or whatever color for your brand) or even a polishing pad and shouldn't need anything more.

Polishing uses abrasive products to remove imperfections from your paint. Waxing adds the shine to the exterior of your vehicle, as well as, a layer of protection from the elements. Ultimately, polishing prepares the car to be waxed.
Nice result for second grade equipment and polish. It's the prep work and effort that makes the best results though. I think you'll love the ceramic products from Meguires.
1 quick hint about polishing. I polished for years until I realized the hard way that you can only polish in 1 certain direction. Left to the Right. (Do not polish Up and Down ) the car will look like it has had lousy bodywork done to it. Waves occur.
If you have a good polisher and a compound it can remove swirls fast but you need to polish it after to give it a mirror finish it’s a faster process but just 2 steps instead of one like this
@@DOCTOR_KIA A compound removes swirls but leaves a rougher surface (usually holograms too) so it needs to be polished to give it a smooth, glossy finish hence why it's called a 2-step. Anyway Stauffer here is doing a 1-step polish however it doesn't remove all the swirls and light scratches rather ones that are visible to the naked eye in natural light.
200kmile3v you can remove swirls faster with a compound liquid but it will give it a hazy finish. After that you can polish it with a polish liquid to give it a mirror finish. He’s doing a one step it takes longer because the cut of the polish grit is softer than compound.
Detail spray is only adding a layer of protection to the swirls your trying to remove. Can’t stress enough how much panel prep is needed in this process. Specially after clay bar process and in between polishing/compound passes using non filler agents. If the compound/polish has fillers in it you don’t want to use panel prep because it will remove what your trying to fill in. Just some info for the garage guys🤙
I've just bought a Chrysler 300C 5dr estate...Think I'm gonna need a large packed lunch and a couple of weeks off work to do mine, but I'm really looking farward to it. Great video.
Small heads up, i had a detail shop tell me you dont want to use clay unless the car really has alot of contaminants as it can also take off the clearcoat
For me, Start with speed 3 and yellow pad. Finish with speed 6 Orange pad.If rubbing selection is good, it will take very less time as compared with you.
I can't wait to get my Alfa Spider show ready. This has been very informative. I am a bit worried about burning the paint because I don't have an orbital polisher and have limited speed control. I'll practice on something before tackling the Alfa and the Jag.
Nice job. Couldn't tell from the video but it appears you didn't change the HF backing plate. I highly recommend doing so and going with a 5" instead of a 6". It'll give you a bit more control.
Haven’t gotten into polishers yet, but I’ve recently discovered clay, spray detailer, and I’ve been using mothers cmaligornia gold wax for years. Truck after a week of vacation and many hours in my driveway, she looks a hell of a lot better than she did even a year ago when I took receipt of it.
Thanks for making this. I'm planning to do this as my summer project (currently in school) on my accord sport. Any recommendations on using the compound to get rid of swirls? There are a lot of choices out there and I'm a beginner on this. Don't want to spend 400 plus dollars to have someone do it.
Few days ago I used autoglym super resin polish on mercedes 197 obsidian black color. DA polisher is carwise and pad is sonax red one. It looks good. For many years i used wurth p10 and p20 compounds. Nice video.
This should’ve been compounded first.... in your left/right comparison, you can clearly see the right side still had scratches. The paint has added depth and a mirror like finish due to the fact that you used a polish.... that’s exactly what a polish does. Clearly your swirls and scratches are deeper than what your eyes can see and you need to hit it with a compound, then a polish. Do not use dish soap as a lubricant. You can use car soap and water as lubricant when clay barring. Always prime your buff/polishing pads with product by spreading the product evenly throughout the pad THEN put dime-sized dots of product to spread on paint surface. And use 50/50 IPA and water spray to remove the oils after polishing/compounding. Happy detailing and keep learning!
Why not use dish soap for clay bar lubricant and why not use dish soap to remove the remaining polish. It should just be getting all of the oils off the car
Polish does very little “ cutting “ to remove swirls and minor scratches. Also the type of pad used has an impact on the ability to hide the swirls. A mild cutting compound with the right type of pad would improve the results. The polish brings out the shine and a wax or sealant protects the shine and gives the gloss some longevity. Your vehicle’s surface wasn’t in that bad a condition to start with. I use a small amount of the “ soap “ I use to wash the car in the water for claying. The Detail Spray itself is also good for claying. The Sonax products are good, you’ll be happy with it.
After polishing do you put a ceramic coat over the wax? Does ceramic coating really work? Is one better than the other? If a windshield is in good condition do you wax windshields?
I appreciate the video. Thank you. Question. Does it matter if your vehicle has any kind of coating or clear coat on it or does this type of polishing work regardless? Thank you.
Griot's Garage B.O.S.S. polishes all across the board the results are amazing. For a higher end finish Menzerna is a + when it comes to finishes bit on the pricey side..🌟
I agree with you, I've had good results with Poor Boys products. Though the products I keep falling back on for de swirling and polishing are Meguiars Ultimate Compound, followed by their Ultimate Polish. I find the results very predictable and consistent, importantly I've never damaged paintwork with this combination used with DA polisher and foam pads - avoiding pressure, let the product do the work.
Thanks so much for making a walkthrough on how to..now I need to do the exact same thing to my abused, neglected car paint 😖 thanks again.. cheers and keep them videos coming 👍 subscribed.
Clay is not putty. Quick detailer forms a protective layer on the paint so dont use that before polishing. You're using a black finishing pad to cut paint.
He could have just use water and car wash soap as a lubricant. Using a detailer spray is usually after you want the residue gone. He cracked me up trying to use a black finishing pad for applying a three-in-one which is all he was doing was laying wax instead of actually compounding or paint correcting.
I don't know how I ended here...well, I kinda saw the detailing of the marketplace car, and then I got sucked in...I'm thinking of doing this to my car...I just don't have the products you use
Been detailing for ten years but learnt the ropes in a smash repairers, I run a rupes polisher, and I use juice compounds (Aussie company) or freacla c3 if I need a hardcore cutting compound.
The orbiter you have back plate- is that a 4 inch? If so where did you buy it?? Nice camera view of before and after very detail on how close you go to the hood with a flashlight. Most people just show it in the sun light.
After polishing, compounding, or any correction work, using an alcohol solution (IPA) removes all oils and residues from the paint surface. For the claybar process, they make specific lubricants for that process as well as different levels of clay. The more aggressive clay you use, the greater the chance of scratching. They will be removed during polishing but a basic clay compound is usually sufficient. I personally dont use detail sprays because they leave a film behind with artificial gloss enhancers.
Great job! Maybe step up to the new griots G9 polisher. Way better than a Harbor Master and using Orange Lake County cutting pad.. should get a better cut and clarity.
God bless you. I used to do this job and made a ton of money. I quit after a few years because it's not for everyone. Exterior detailing is not= to Interior detailing. If you have the stomach to do Interiors.... you have bigger balls than those resting in front of Target Stores because some people are NASTY AS F!!!!! I'VE SEEN IT ALL FROM DEAD CATS TO PUKE CAKED ON CARPET FOR YEARS COOKING IN THE HOT SUN TO EVEN OLD USED UP TAMPONS KEPT IN JARS!!!!! I'll never do Interiors ever again.
You used to much product. 3 or 4 drops of Sonax is all what you need. Sonax is not my first choice for a job like you did. The result would be better with Griot's perfecting cream in the Boss system or Mckee 360. They both do a fantastic job. By the way Griot is a lot cheaper than Sonax. The review on Sona x are not that good. Next time try using a orange or white pad with your sonax cream it will remove more swirls and scratches and it will finish well too. I learned a lot with many years of experience and working on different cars. By the way very good video and keep up the good work. What I wrote is not complaining but just try to make your life easier.
I just go my order delivered. I have to wait until warm weather. I am going to try a white beveled pad and a buff&Shine Uro 50/50 pad. What pad are you using?

I like to use McKees 37 polish. It isn't for the bad scratches but has a very nice shine on my black car!
I like the sound of that, will look into it! Thanks!
So how many months will it take to polish the whole car?
~2 days
If you have a good polisher and a compound it can remove swirls fast but you need to polish it after to give it a mirror finish it’s a faster process but just 2 steps instead of one like this
What do you mean polish after? Isn’t he polishing it right now
@@DOCTOR_KIA A compound removes swirls but leaves a rougher surface (usually holograms too) so it needs to be polished to give it a smooth, glossy finish hence why it's called a 2-step.
He’s doing a one step it takes longer because the cut of the polish grit is softer than compound.
conqueror 3 in 1 paint correction system is great brought my car up like showroom condition
Just some info for the garage guys🤙
what is detail spray?
@@aumy3602 ipa spray
I've just bought a Chrysler 300C 5dr estate...Think I'm gonna need a large packed lunch and a couple of weeks off work to do mine, but I'm really looking farward to it. Great video.
martyn green you have lockdown , wish granted
Small heads up, i had a detail shop tell me you dont want to use clay unless the car really has alot of contaminants as it can also take off the clearcoat
It doesn't remove clear coat but it will strip wax and sealant
@@chrisk5271 which is what you want because you're going to be applying polish then fresh wax on your car after this.
Great narration.
For me, Start with speed 3 and yellow pad. Finish with speed 6 Orange pad.If rubbing selection is good, it will take very less time as compared with you.
What polish was you using in this video? Thanks for showing this.
I polished mine and ended up with some DA haze. Was my first time so I'm going to go over it again soon.
It'll give you a bit more control.
no. as long a your pad is the same side as the backing plate your all good.
Outstanding work 👏 I was drawn in from the very beginning. Phenomenal 👌
Whatever you’re paying for the music it’s worth every penny! Great video
Before i use meguiars compound... But now i tried turtle ceramic wax and polish and i love it
While washing clay at the same time saves time and with the car soap same results. Been claying for 20 plus years
But its harder to see through the car soap for claying I would assume? Saving time-yes.
Nice video.
3:06 "Lubricity" definitely made me immediately pause
😂 same
ME TOO
Love this video gave me some confidence I’ll be giving it a shot tomorrow
Excellent…thank you.
I imagine you smell the paper after you wipe, don't you?
Now I feel I can polish now, great video. Should I put a spray wax after polish?
I now hate O’Riley auto parts because of the insane frequency of their ads. Great video though, thank you!
Yes f to the o on the relentless robotic ads
For me it is Wix..LMAO
o riley is too cheap to update the song. It's been the same for 20 yrs.
Fucking see their ads and it kills me because I live in a state with 0 locations
Do yourself a favor and get TH-cam Red
Polish does very little “ cutting “ to remove swirls and minor scratches. Also the type of pad used has an impact on the ability to hide the swirls. A mild cutting compound with the right type of pad would improve the results. The polish brings out the shine and a wax or sealant protects the shine and gives the gloss some longevity. Your vehicle’s surface wasn’t in that bad a condition to start with. I use a small amount of the “ soap “ I use to wash the car in the water for claying. The Detail Spray itself is also good for claying. The Sonax products are good, you’ll be happy with it.
Roo-Pez. Sonax Perf Fin, is nice. HD Speed, one of the best AIOs, as is AngelWax Enigma.
Will look I got those, thanks for the suggestion!
My go-to one step polish is Lat 26 Degrees medium compound.
Buy a 5" back plate and 5.5"-6" pads
I was wondering if you could do a video on detailing the engine compartment of a hybrid.
Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it as a beginner. Wish me luck on my first DA polish next weekend! Regards ~ Mike
Hope it went good man
After polishing do you put a ceramic coat over the wax? Does ceramic coating really work? Is one better than the other? If a windshield is in good condition do you wax windshields?
After polish I go ceramic on cars. there is a big difference between brands and I'll be having my own coming soon.
5 videos so far and no one explains which pads to use and the difference.
Its like its their ancient Chinese secret
I still would love to know.... Did you ever find out?
I appreciate the video. Thank you. Question. Does it matter if your vehicle has any kind of coating or clear coat on it or does this type of polishing work regardless? Thank you.
Adam’s polishes one step
Griot's Garage B.O.S.S. polishes all across the board the results are amazing.
For a higher end finish Menzerna is a + when it comes to finishes bit on the pricey side..🌟
I dont have a car what am I doing here. Great video thou!!!
A do it better here in Africa.
Lmfao 😂😂 I used to see lions fighting over food on discovery channel and it has nothing to do with me😂😂😂😂😂😂
Queen Kyah I don’t have a car either, but I do have a car washing business, and am trying to learn how to polish
Knowledge is power
Thanks for this sharing with your recommendations . Great !👍
What does a detail spray consist of
Water and isopropyl alcohol
I agree with you, I've had good results with Poor Boys products. Though the products I keep falling back on for de swirling and polishing are Meguiars Ultimate Compound, followed by their Ultimate Polish. I find the results very predictable and consistent, importantly I've never damaged paintwork with this combination used with DA polisher and foam pads - avoiding pressure, let the product do the work.
I would say try Renewit by showcar. It's a real good one step polish as well
Thanks for the suggestion!
Ssd
is it ceramic?
What’s a quick detail spray? Like a non-wax spray that you use in between washes??
Thanks so much for making a walkthrough on how to..now I need to do the exact same thing to my abused, neglected car paint 😖 thanks again.. cheers and keep them videos coming 👍 subscribed.
Great video sir ty
Clay is not putty.
Quick detailer forms a protective layer on the paint so dont use that before polishing.
You're using a black finishing pad to cut paint.
He could have just use water and car wash soap as a lubricant. Using a detailer spray is usually after you want the residue gone. He cracked me up trying to use a black finishing pad for applying a three-in-one which is all he was doing was laying wax instead of actually compounding or paint correcting.
i like your products because we have the same color vehicle
I don't know how I ended here...well, I kinda saw the detailing of the marketplace car, and then I got sucked in...I'm thinking of doing this to my car...I just don't have the products you use
si eu la fel :))
Been detailing for ten years but learnt the ropes in a smash repairers, I run a rupes polisher, and I use juice compounds (Aussie company) or freacla c3 if I need a hardcore cutting compound.
Thank tip also recommand for paint enhancement?
Your done, you park in your driveway. Ahhhh. Then you hear a lawnmower !!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Always a good idea to throw some carnauba wax, a ceramic coating or something else on top bc the all you gotta do is hose it down and dry
The orbiter you have back plate- is that a 4 inch? If so where did you buy it?? Nice camera view of before and after very detail on how close you go to the hood with a flashlight. Most people just show it in the sun light.
Ok I see at the end you mentioned McGuire's lol cool! 👍
The different steps are explained so perfectly. It's very useful for beginners like us . Thanks for sharing.

Why detail spray and not an IPA? Thanks for the video
Only because I feel better about the lubricant properties when cleaning up after clay. Own personal preference really
I thought IPAs are for removing waxes and other polishes. It’s not meant to be a proper lubricant needed for clay barring.
What’s ipa?
@@wammles1237 its short for isopropyl alcohol, found at any convenience store.
Great job! Maybe step up to the new griots G9 polisher. Way better than a Harbor Master and using Orange Lake County cutting pad.. should get a better cut and clarity.
Pretty wild seeing how far you've come and how much you've improved compared to the last polish video I saw where you did that red civic.
I have both sonax and perfection cream. Almost done with sonax but gonna use perfection cream next! Excited for the results!!
I’m looking forward to seeing the Mequires vid
I did not see any difference before and after, what is the tape thing👀
must be blind
It’s a racing stripe
Kurt, when he had the light on and went right to left, you could see swirls on the left and none on the right.
The new turtle wax polish and wax is a great one step
I just go my order delivered. I have to wait until warm weather. I am going to try a white beveled pad and a buff&Shine Uro 50/50 pad. What pad are you using?
Video Idea: Do an interior detail on the Mercedes Benz
Well made video in 21:9 resolution. Good job!
