A "Real" old timer will remember the days when the jump seat was just a thoroughly used 5 gallon metal grease bucket and the lid was an optional luxury ...

The 1st 3 trucks that I drove a B model Mack and then 2 R model Macks, didn't even come with the optional metal bucket...lol

The lack of a lid could make the bucket more useful than just a passenger seat.
Especially after a night of wings and beer. 😉

@Jim Michael Mack quadruplex, triplex, duplex and the extended range with 5 reverse speeds but my favorite was a spicer 5x4 with an airshift valve controlling the 4 spd auxiliary, there was short driveshaft between the 5 and 4, 318 Detroit 2 cycle

Get MBTS to record some of his comments and other thoughts and while in the shop turn it on to fill the silent shop with a little noise now and then.
I love learning how things are done, but I dont think I will be working on transmission in the near future.
    Take care

Good work fellas! When I used to work on those we would put the whole thing together with it sitting vertically. It made lining things up a lot easier. We would also put a shim or two under the clutch brake in case things were a bit worn. Then we could just cut them out with snips if they weren't needed.

You can blame MBTS for the crooked carrier bearing since he was guiding the drive shaft in, and that's no yoke, I mean joke. It took time but you probably saved yourself a ton of money by doing it yourself. Good job and stay safe.

You took just a little bit longer installing the clutch on the Puppy Dog compared to the 42 seconds it takes to install a clutch on line at work for a 2 litre engine, but you had 8 10mm bolts compared to the 6 8mm bolts so I’ll give you that. 😉
    🤣😂🤣😂

On a test drive after a clutch replacement I did, (bob tailing) heard a loud bang, bang rattling and vibrations !!! And truck got all kinds a of Squirrelly. And thinking just blew drive lines, Pushed and clutch and hit the brakes. Truck slid fish tailed all over the road. Then after stopping look back found were blew two rear tires on last axle. Was a relief thinking Well I didn't spit the drive lines out! Left some cool skid marks on road that stayed long time. Only I knew how they got there!

That is onebig mother of a transmission. I’m curious who makes that transmission. Is it an EATON? Is there a separate transfer case or is that all included in that case. Is there 4 gears each plus reverse plus doubling the number of gears with high and low range to 8 forward speeds and 2 reverse. How many gear sets did you put in. I didn’t quite figure out what those 1/4” rods were all about? Maybe that was part of the synchronizing mechanism. I was totally surprised that there would be any timing marks between gears but I guess there is awe spot because the number of teeth from different speeds need to be aligned. Why wouldn’t the gear set manufacturer have permanent drilled holes for match.i love the sound of Your MACK TRUCK. What is the life left in Your rear Differentials and when will You have to do a partial rebuild of
Your engine in truck and how about injector pump rebuild? I guess that in Your case that you drive it until it breaks because
Your truck never gets too far away from Your base of operation and garage. You sure are a very talented man as a mechanic, machine operator on most equipment, excavation specialist, demolition, and being a former large contractor You are well qualified to make decisions for all Your Clients. OK I have blown enough smoke but I really mean it. You are much too busy to respond to any of the questions I asked and they really aren’t important to me but if you ever do a review it would be interesting to know if the Engine and Cab are the only things made by Mack or is it all Mack. I guessing a new Mack Truck to replace Yours would be $150,000. Your gear parts less than 3 grand and your labour and shop 7 grand. Haul Truck to Mack Dealer and end up with a 20 grand Bill if not more to replace everything if You want warranty. What is the show that has restricted access all about the stick?

Mikey... when Aaron turned the camera with you sitting on the floor... I saw the spill and thought, “Oh no! Mike has done spilt his Pepsi and had a total melt down!” Fortunately, it was only a beer.
I used to have a 1952 Farmall A. It had a habit of locking up when shifting out of reverse. It had the same type of shifting forks that you showed on the bottom of your shifter. The one for reverse was worn. It would ride up and pop out of place leaving the transmission in both forward and reverse at the same time. To stop it, I got really good at not driving into dead ends and parking on hills so I could roll backward without using reverse. I also got really good at popping the lid off the transmission cover, sliding the gear with a screwdriver to align the fork and putting the cover back on.
I put up with it for about a year while calling all over the country trying to find a replacement... (before the internet). I told my nephew about it and he said no problem, just bring it out and, I’ll build it up with the welder.
Well sir, he laid the ugliest popcorn looking bead you ever saw on it and brought it to me. I looked at it and asked , “What am I supposed to do with this?”
His reply, “I told you I’d weld it. I never said I’d machine it. You’re the college graduate. I’m sure you can finish it.”
Well, I borrowed calipers and micrometers from work, bought my first angle grinder and a selection files. Then I began a machining job under a shade tree in my backyard that would make Bill Gates look like a mere Windows washer. And to my total surprise and satisfaction I got it working as good as new in one long weekend.
After that... I never touched another transmission... not even the one sitting outside, next to my neighbors garage that he’d turned upside down for his wife to use as a planter. Except... for the time I unscrewed the top off of it and showed a buddy my handiwork... while we were drinking one too many beers!
So, my transmission story and yours both involved beer. I’m betting that a lot of them do!!!

I got a good one for you. Ol log hauler, he was a lil different kinda fellow out there in left field kind you know, but he always ran old peterbuilt cabover for 30 years or better. He keep patching it up and roll on. It finally got to the point it just wasn't worth patching he was going to give up. Loggers talked him into getting another truck and coming back out to woods, he did and he found him a old freightliner big truck ol he was proud of that thing. Big Detroit motor 15 speed locker rears. It had it all even air ride chassis. He goes and gets his first load of logs leaves the woods gets going down the road starts hearing a noise, said the transmission going out, so heads home pulls the transmission sends it to the shop, they call him back say nothing wrong with transmission. He puts it back in trys again same thing, he says got to be my rearends. Goes back home pulls hogheads. Can't find nothing wrong. He puts it back together. Gets frustrated and gives up says hell with. Truck sat there couple months atleast his buddy stopped by they got to talking about it and he went over looking at it and the son of gun had the airbags deflated and didn't know it. Had the driveline angle off causing the chatter. Lol sorry long message.

Did they order the truck with an Eaton instead of a Mack transmission? The last Mack tractor I drove had a triple counter shaft Mack 13speed in it. The only problem working on trucks is the weight of the parts, I helped a friend work on a motorcycle transmission and was starting to second guess going to school to be a truck mechanic instead of a motorcycle mechanic. At least you got her running again.

As you finish is the point I would find a gasket I forgot to install in the clutch and have to start over. I think this took a lot of guts to take on. I'm impressed once again by my favorite channel.

I just got doing this something this weekend. But I needed a new flywheel too. The little kitty cat decided to spit the locking wire out of the flywheel bolts

Why do I get the feeling that things wouldn't have gone so smooth if Kleeman was involved in replacing those gears, except for collecting them from the dealers 😂

How did you keep MBTS from welding stuff together in there!

    • @Crewsy
      @Crewsy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I bet it was tough Chris. Mike probably had to hide the MIG welder or shut off the breaker that Aaron couldn’t reach without dragging his 6x6 booster block over to, to be able to reach.
Going to miss MBTS for a while. At least on this channel.

okay using the wire brush on the grinder wizzing the case clean and throwing grit into a open gear case is just a bad idea, use a razor blade to scrape those surfaces clean instead of throwing grit around

OK, you may not like this but. From a couple of your other videos, you could have been home doing 'housework', vacuuming, washing windows, laundry, supper, teaching the kids WHILE 'she' could have rebuilt the trans. Oh and keep in mind, you could have dropped the MACK off and gave up a couple weeks pay and had it done. NO disrespect intended, just sayin.
I love how you break down what you do and take the time to show us the details. Good job guys! Sonny (CT)
