Matt, you have a video that shows you disassembling the actuating linkage for the steering clutches. That video can resolve any questions you have about how it goes back together, because it shows how things were when you got the cat.

One of of the linkage sides was broken and locked up originally, the other half threw me off because the stud that the spring rides on was bent. I put the bent stud back on with the spring and the feel was completely different, so the old video was actually throwing me off. The backwards handles was my bad, it got confusing because in the original video the cover was upside down.

when you use a punch to make a gasket, usually it's done on a block of hard wood ,using the end face, this helps with the hole making, but also makes your tool last a life time ,instead of hitting a steel bench and blunting it . little things helps keep your took box healthy :-)

this is a cool project, I admire your passion. NOW the moist important part is painting, I suggest to get a Mapp gas torch and heat any metal that your going to paint just before you paint it, the heating will drive out the moisture in the metal, you will see the metal get wet then dry as it goes from room temp to warm, the paintwork will stick way better and the warm parts will assist in a better cure for the paint

I did this kind of work for years... about your age then. Now I can't tell you what I had for lunch. I do believe I would not paint any parts inside the transmission as it may dissolve and plug filters. They make a primer for metal that doesn't come off. I know that they make that primer in many colors so you can coordinate the colors on it. I'm 72 now and haven't touched to many wrenches since I got crippled up.Like you said, other people have worked on it and how they assembled it could of been way wrong. I got into machines and found many bolts that vibrate out and land down below so before I just washed everything away, I kinda panned the dirt for parts that fall into the crevices. Heck I found a ring in the oil/grease in a transmission on one. A jewelry ring... actually some decent gold but no name so it was mine till I lost it in travels

The groove in the bearing is a grease groove. If you put loctite in the groove it will ruin the bearing.

    • @PacificNorthwestHillbilly
      @PacificNorthwestHillbilly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The grooves aren't being used, there is absolutely no way to regrease these bearings once installed. Probably should have made this as clear as I did in previous videos.

Epoxy mixed with a filler, such as colloidal silica, makes a good repair material for pitted metal where you are trying to get a gasket to seal against a smooth surface. The cork you are using looks fine, but it's going to be difficult to get it to seal without first creating a smooth surface that it seats against. West Systems makes a great epoxy system for just such applications. Commonly used for marine applications, but would work great for this application. Let it set up for 24 hours, then sand with orbital sander to get perfect surface on that transmission cover.

Thanks for the longer more detailed video Matt, she's really starting to look good now! The cork gasket, I think they only remove as much as they do is to stop bits falling into the cavity and cut cost, so I think it will be good the way you have done it, time will tell. I also think what the "expert" commenters forget sometimes is that you dont become a master by never making a mistake or trying something different, you just become somewhat knowledgeable about doing it the "right" way, so dont worry what they think if they give you crap for it. Example, I bet you have a better chance of assembling that linkage again if you had to do it all over.

You're making nice progress! I think I've stated this before.. I can see easily getting overwhelmed with this project with all those parts/pieces. Organization has to be the number one goal. Bag and tag, etc.
    Keep up the good work!

Nice work Matt. I own a Cat excavator but really don't have a need (didn't say want) for a tractor/bulldozer. But for some reason my (retired) engineer brain is utterly fascinated with your and Toby's rebuilds of these old Cat D series. I certainly appreciate Toby's want to stay as original as possible but I also applaud your updates thus far. Again, nice work.

I would have had to video all this while dismantling. I can't remember where I was yesterday much less all those parts locations. Man, that's gonna be so awesome when you're done. 🙌🏻

That pitted cover surface area use some JB weld then sand it down smooth.
I've used it for that dozens of times with some metal fibers imbedded in it.
Even on my Harleys engine, boat engines and small engines.
    Works like a champ.
Just make sure the pits are free of paint, corrosion and other crap with brake cleaner.

Really enjoy the series, got another little quick tip for ya. You pointed out the pitting on some of your gasket surfaces. I learned a long time ago from an equipment owner operator to use Devcon two part metal epoxy on surfaces such as that. It’s the toughest and best thing I’ve ever seen for such applications and it’s machinable after it sets up. The same operator still has a 977 track loader with a 14 x 16 inch plate Devconned to the underside of the transmission that has been on the machine since I was 9 years old when his dad knocked a window in the Trans with a stump, that was 35 years ago and it’s still tickin.

Great video! You're going to start dreaming in Highway Yellow soon..... Best way to buy brake cleaner in in 5 litre bottles and then buy a hand bottle sprayer. Wurth do these. Much cheaper in the long run.

Thanks again for going to the extra effort to share with us. Cat has green loctite called 'bearing mount'. I've already preached the wonders of Cat 6V-6640 gasket maker for the pitted surfaces. It really is that good. I use it on gasketless transfer case halves. They seal without a leak and come apart without a fight.
