How does one truck piss off so many Wives / Girl friends.....LMAO. This episode should be named " How to earn your Man Card " We have all been there. I have laughed so hard on this one. it brought me to tears. Keep up the good work Guys.
You’re right I’m watching this and having a good laugh. The trick is, there is a short bolt in the front of block. You take it out and put one of the fuel pump bolts in and that is what holds the fuel pump push rod up.
He took the AIR pump out so (if memory serves) the short bolt is not there and he'll have an oil leak. Another problem with those years are bad pump push rods that love to eat the cam.
I was a vehicle mechanic in the Air Force for 20 years. The old 6.2/6.5 diesels on the Humvees and M-Series CUCVs (M1008 Chevy Pickup and M1009 Chevy Blazer) had mechanical fuel pumps. We would put thick grease on the push rod and slide it back in (doesn't hurt to turn the engine so the push rod can be fully inserted). Stays in place so you can put the pump on. Saves a lot of aggravation and avoids getting the rod jammed and broken.
After 3 episodes of Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering rebuild a D8 blade it's like flipping over to watching Yogi and Boo Boo doing a home mechanics show.
Kurtis is by far the most skilled and talented metal worker on TH-cam. He is in a league all his own. Compared to him most are not going to do as well. That said, Mike and Aaron are the most entertaining.
Getting another wife - Pretty easy (although I'd strongly recommend AGAINST even trying to do so in 2024!) Getting a vintage Chevy truck in 2024 - PRICELESS
remove the 9/16 bolt from the front motor mount and install a longer bolt to lock the push rod in the retracted pos, the rhe pump will install easily. respectfully Craig
I miss my 78 Chevy 4x4 full-time. Dual pipes and headers. High-rise intake, they sound so good. Luckily, my wife loved that truck also. I added 2 inch lift springs to it. There is nothing better on snow or mud. I drove it every day. It was 30 years old when I sold it. The new owner still drives it. Great truck. Great video having some fun.
Take Jenna out for supper some place where they come and take order and even bring the food out to the table. If the six figure haul truck didn't get a 'hell no' , you're good.
Thank you. I remember the Struggles, The first time I Had a Chev fuel pump problem. and The tank switch only stays on the left side when powered no power and it goes back to right side. At least in my trucks case. That is a Sweet truck. Congrats.
This has to be one of the best videos I have watched in a year. Thanks for all the fun. As an old fart I really appreciated remembering driving around with a sweat heart scooted over next to me!
Rebuild that 4 barrel Quad. And loosen the secondary springs then get a performance distributor, 21/2 dual exhaust and an inline fuel filter then a K&N air filler and put the air cleaner lid on upside down. Big difference in fuel economy and performance.
I’d strip the engine top and go with a Holly throttle body and intake update. A tank replacement with a the updated feed pump in it. Because she has so LOW mileage. Which the wifey would be even more angry about, but would change her mind if you let her take the first test drive. If thare’s anyone who could do in Mike will do it. If anything it would be a great updated resale 4 sure.
In 73 I purchased a 3/4 ton Cheyenne long bed with a 454 and 4 speed. For a gasser it was a heck of a motor. I pulled a fifth wheel to Yellowstone in 75 and going up I80 towards Laramie I couldn't get out of 3rd gear. Today I pull a fifth with my Denali Duramax. I went over the Bighorns in August. On I90 which has some long steep grades I held 75 in overdrive.
Cole down here got in the comment about the bolt. One thing about small blocks of that era, a 9/16 fit most of the bolts. 7/16, 1/2, 5/8, and 11/16 got the rest of them. I'd give that rottenchester crummyjet a Viking funeral and put an Edelbrock replacement on. A good set of equal length headers and dual exhaust would make the truck really scream. I've had good luck with asking whether my wife would rather I collect tools and equipment or blonds. Works as long as there is not a "none of the above" option.
Hey guys there a bolt on the front of the block you remove and stick a longer bolt back in and it holds the rod in place while you remove the pump and when putting in the pump it go back in easy
There is an older Cadillac carb that I found and used to sell ti the hot rod guys that didn’t have all the vacuum lines. It was a Quadra jet that was a little larger for the 500 ci cars. The old part number was a Q78. I haven’t looked in years for the cross over. But, it was also the cheapest part number we had by a large margin. It was great. Saved people 300$ over an edlebrock in the early 2000s. I enjoyed this video more than any other because it reminded me of old times. Thank you guys.
Priceless MBTS - Dirt Perfect speechless. Not in bad condition for a 40 year old ute - truck - shine it up a breeze the open road - reminder of the 'old' days when you were young - grand idea.
Watching you fight with the fuel pump push rod is a great time. Thanks for the good laugh. I recall when my old man taught me the easy way with the holding bolt in the front.
When talking about Rodney I don't think Ive ever seen Mike at a loss for words and not sure how not to come back with all Aarons narration and pointers. You guys are great thanks for the chuckles
I have an 83 same colors, But it's a long box and every panel is rusted out. Love the Square body. PS the fuel pump there is a plug on the front of the block take it out screw a longer bolt in there and it hold the rod up.
Not sure if anyone helped you with the fuel pump trick or not but before you take the old one off, there's a bolt on the front of the block that lines up with the push rod shaft. Remove this bolt and install one that's 1/2 inch longer. The end of that bolt will hold the shaft in place while you pull the pump off. Replace the original bolt after you've installed the new pump.
There’s a short bolt you can remove and replace with a longer one in the oil gallery for that fuel pump rod to hold it in place while changing the pump.
There is a bolt on the front of the block you pull out and slip a screwdriver in to hold the fuel pump shaft up so you can install the fuel pump and then reinstall the bolt and it's in
Funny how some things never change with square body’s 😂, love the squares I have a k10, a k20, and a c65. The k10 I drove to way before I had licenses dated my wife in ( married 29 years) and still Dailey it. My c65 I have all the original paperwork from build sheet to dealer papers down to the battery warranty book. Love the episode and thanks for saving the square!
One of the problems you boys seem to have is you two never "re-sell" any of these acquisitions. This truck could make a tidy profit. BUT WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO KEEP THE SPOUSE'S HAPPY is take a few offers once it is restored. You dont HAVE TO SELL IT!!! Just prove it is valuable to your wives.
First gen small blocks have a bolt that you remove in the front and use a longer bolt to lock down the fuel pump shaft. It make Installation much easier
I really miss these old trucks, easy to work on and plenty of room to do it. But when I worked on them you could find parts anywhere. We found an old fuel pump in the neighbors yard one time, slapped it on, and it actually worked. Then we went mudding.
That truck brings back memories. My Dad bought a 1983 Chevy Surburban, the same two-tone as that truck. It is funny to see, again, all of the same vacuum crap hoses under the hood. I'm thinking, buying this will easy the pain when you buy the Case! 😁😁😁
Oooh! Sweet squarebody!! Love it! Been looking for one! Our neighbor has one, original owner, has over 300k miles on it, purrs like a kitten! MBTS, it IS in a garage! And it’s heated too!! The only issue i see is finding parts. I had a 1972 Dodge Colt station wagonI would have LOVE to have kept, but couldn’t find parts you better be writing all this stuff down!!
That’s it I’m not watching another one of your videos, until you post another one! I know I don’t have the coordination for this upgrade. I struggle enough with the offset MMM deck
on SB chevy, you use a bolt in the front side of the block where the pump goes. There are 2 holes on the front. One passes through into the block where the pump rod slides. You screw a bolt into that hole and it holds up the pump rod. Not many know this.
2 ways to handle the little rod on the chevy small block fuel pump. 1 is roll the engine around so the cam doesn't put it in a bind. 2 is coat it with axle grease and push it up in it's slot it won't fall down in your way.
I had an 84 GMC Jimmy for a few years that was the same Color. The previous owner had taken all the smog stuff on and had put an Edelbrock Intake Manifold on it. That thing ran great!
On the front of the block in line with the rod that operates the fuel pump is a bolt. if you take that bolt out and replace it with a longer one it will hold that rod up in place while you put the pump in. then just put the short bolt back in
filmed in July viewed in October. Months after you already solved the issue. The trick with a small block chevy fuel pump is the take the flat plate off and remove the plunger and coat it with a thick layer of grease. then put the plate back on . after it is running again the engine oil will melt the grease into the crankcase like it was never there. There usually is a bolt along the side of the block that can be removed and replaced with a slightly longer bolt that will jam nut plunger up out the way. Just remember to put the original bolt back or you will another set of problems to fix. If the block is hot the grease trick will work less well
As much as ya’ll rock the dirt world, your shop vids are just as entertaining. If you have so much fun doing your job, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Thanks for sharing DP!
Sadly, some ladies just don't understand how us guys love our trucks. I have never owned a full size pick up, but I did have an S10; I loved that truck , did so much with it, & I still miss it!
I had a 76 GMC that went through so many fuel pumps that I carried a spare. I discovered a bolt on the block adjacent to the fuel pump that must be tightened to hold the fuel pump rod before removing the old fuel pump. After four or five pumps I could change it out in less than 15 minutes. I know it is too late to know now, but hopefully if there is a next time it’ll help.
July 18th?!? Holy Smokes! You’re still the reigning champion and holder of the History Channel title 😂 I was trying to figure out what was older, the truck or the video 🤣
Do the 3/8 bolt on the front of the engine. Remove it and insert a longer bolt. Push the push rod up finger tighten the bolt. Install the fuel pump. Take the longer bolt out and replace with the original bolt.
on the front of the engine block on the right side of the block down low there 2 bolts one on top of the other .you can remove one and replace it with a longer one it will hold the fuel pump rod up so you can replace the fuel pump . then replace the short bolt and your done.
On the 350 Chevrolet, there is a bolt on the front of the block you take out. With the rod pushed up all the way use one of the fuel pump bolts to put in that front bolt hole and snugged up just enough to hold the rod. Put pump in and one bolt on them pull the bolt holding rod. Replace bolt with the short bolt on front of engine or you will have an oil leak.
Love those square bodies! Got one too! Mine's a Johnny Cash version! 77 frame, 83 cab, 68 camero 350 engine, 4 barrel Holly carb, a transfer case and a hydraulic dump bed! That thing'll climb a tree with the granny gear 4-speed! Mines Red, but I love that brown/gold version! Here's a prediction: It'll be a Gunner Truck, in a few short years! Great video! Lots of laughs! Thanks Mike & Aaron! Lee
How does one truck piss off so many Wives / Girl friends.....LMAO. This episode should be named " How to earn your Man Card " We have all been there. I have laughed so hard on this one. it brought me to tears. Keep up the good work Guys.
Glad I wasn't the only one crying from laughter.
Amen Brother!😂
right
Is it cos it’s brown?
@iNireus $ lol is more likely than the color.
You’re right I’m watching this and having a good laugh. The trick is, there is a short bolt in the front of block. You take it out and put one of the fuel pump bolts in and that is what holds the fuel pump push rod up.
Hell, I am 80, and that's the first time I heard that. Wish I would have known it then.
He took the AIR pump out so (if memory serves) the short bolt is not there and he'll have an oil leak. Another problem with those years are bad pump push rods that love to eat the cam.
We always use to just put some grease on the shaft
That’s what I was screaming at the screen 😂

So very true…Kurtis is fun to watch and these 2 are just funny to watch 😂

Just made me snort sweet tea out my nose. That hurt!
Funniest thing I've read on U-tube for ages. 👍
Getting another wife - Pretty easy (although I'd strongly recommend AGAINST even trying to do so in 2024!)
Getting a vintage Chevy truck in 2024 - PRICELESS
Square body with tail lights working and gun rack in the rear window. Awesome.
Watching you two is like watching two brothers from different mothers having way to much fun!! Thank you !!!
Look at DPs smile once they took it for a drive. Priceless.
That truck is awesome. Brings me right back to the good ol days. Even has the pew pew rack on the rear window! Memories
remove the 9/16 bolt from the front motor mount and install a longer bolt to lock the push rod in the retracted pos, the rhe pump will install easily. respectfully Craig
It's surprising how many people don't know this little trick, had to see if anyone said it yet.
I miss my 78 Chevy 4x4 full-time. Dual pipes and headers. High-rise intake, they sound so good. Luckily, my wife loved that truck also. I added 2 inch lift springs to it. I was thinking the same about that haul truck,
Never trust a guy that wears Scoobydoo socks to work, they'll get you in trouble every time. 😂😄🤣😃😁😅😂🤣😅😆😄😆🤣
The two of you have made my day! Laughed so hard, Great way to start a new day. Thank you for sharing!😂
I love how you use the jeep to hold the parts for your chevy truck.
Thank you. I remember the Struggles, The first time I Had a Chev fuel pump problem. and The tank switch only stays on the left side when powered no power and it goes back to right side. At least in my trucks case. That is a Sweet truck. Congrats.

That Aaron is a true friend,,,,WIN WIN ! Drop the ball and chain…..
🇺🇸🇨🇱
I think you put an unnecessary 'r' in that fifth word, and then your statement (at least the first part) would be correct.
You guys are too funny! Love the interaction and obvious friendship! Thanks for sharing, be well, be safe!
Rebuild that 4 barrel Quad. And loosen the secondary springs then get a performance distributor, 21/2 dual exhaust and an inline fuel filter then a K&N air filler and put the air cleaner lid on upside down. Big difference in fuel economy and performance.
This video was awesome and so much fun. Tell the little woman that all is cool and that your viewers loved it.

It's the gun rack in the rear window that really seals the deal
You have no idea how much I look forward to you videos makes this old depressed duck a little happier 😊and it's 2nd October 1204am long time
Always have to put grease on the end of the shaft for the fuel pump so it stays up in the block
In 73 I purchased a 3/4 ton Cheyenne long bed with a 454 and 4 speed. For a gasser it was a heck of a motor. How did you buy an 83 and pull a 5th wheel in 75?
@@Jimpen294x0 cause I meant 73 🙃

Yup, use to have a quadrajunk. that cheap pot metal they cast those out of sucked.
Take the factory air filter cover an flip it over ,put the wing nut back on right an listen to the 4 barrels kick in.
Hey guys there a bolt on the front of the block you remove and stick a longer bolt back in and it holds the rod in place while you remove the pump and when putting in the pump it go back in easy
That truck changes the name from the "History Channel" to "Animal Planet"🍻
Mike chasing Aaron around the truck had me laughing so hard that I was crying. LOL

Watching you fight with the fuel pump push rod is a great time. Thanks for the good laugh. I recall when my old man taught me the easy way with the holding bolt in the front.
Now, that's a truck. Got a nice gun rack there for your 12 gauge shotgun awesome.

When Aaron flipped that helmet down at 45 minutes, I was about blinded by the glare😅😅😅
Comment generator, almost as good as no seatbelts!
I can smell that exhaust through the video......brings back memories!!
Not sure if anyone helped you with the fuel pump trick or not but before you take the old one off, there's a bolt on the front of the block that lines up with the push rod shaft. Great video Mr Dirt Perfect and MBTS
I can also tell you, that , because your fuel pump bolts are 9/16, instead of 3/8 head bolts, fuel pump has been replaced at least once!
There’s a short bolt you can remove and replace with a longer one in the oil gallery for that fuel pump rod to hold it in place while changing the pump.
Put a bit of grease on the push rod for the fuel pump to hold it up..or there is a bolt hole in the front of the block to jam up the push rod.
There is a bolt on the front of the block you pull out and slip a screwdriver in to hold the fuel pump shaft up so you can install the fuel pump and then reinstall the bolt and it's in

Slap a Dirt Perfect sticker on everything; then it becomes advertising, and therefore is a tax write off.

Hello from Siesta Key Florida
Put grease on the shaft and push it up it holds it in place long enough to get fuel pump in.
You only need 2 vacuum lines. One for the brake booster and one for the distribution.
If I'm having a bad day,I just tune into you guys and my trouble's seem to vanish laugh's a plenty.
Oooh! Sweet squarebody!! Love it! Been looking for one! Our neighbor has one, original owner, has over 300k miles on it, purrs like a kitten! MBTS, it IS in a garage! And it’s heated too!! Love the truck and the chuckles. You two are great partners.
The vacuum canister is good, it keeps the gas fumes in the car, not open venting from the tank.
I can not believe you actually stopped at the stop sign. :) Thank you and have a great day.
That’s it I’m not watching another one of your videos, until you post another one! I know I don’t have the coordination for this upgrade. I struggle enough with the offset MMM deck
They haven't heard of youtube videos to see how to fix things lol Just having fun with you guys , this one of my favorite channels to watch
Good luck getting the truck running guys

Mike and Aaron, SWEET!!! she may be an old girl at 41 but she still runs and with a bit of clean up and polish, she is sweet!! Great video..
“Want me to show you where I used to put my hand back in the day?” LMAO Mike! 😂

Lol there's a bolt hole on the front that you can hold the push rod up, most people don't know about it, that is usually where it will leak.
filmed in July viewed in October. Months after you already solved the issue. The trick with a small block chevy fuel pump is the take the flat plate off and remove the plunger and coat it with a thick layer of grease. then put the plate back on . after it is running again the engine oil will melt the grease into the crankcase like it was never there. Brilliant! Proper blokes, messing about in the garage with a real machine. Greetings from the UK (which is not the best at the moment). Gives me hope.
The fan shroud is the key. Love the old Chevy. Great Video Guys!!!
If I could afford it I’d be there today to buy that. absolutely love that truck.
As much as ya’ll rock the dirt world, your shop vids are just as entertaining. If you have so much fun doing your job, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Thanks for sharing DP!
I’ve dragged my 84 k10 with me since high school. I’m 38 now and it’s time to give it a refresh. Enjoy your truck Mike!
I had the same problem when I changed the fuel pump on an old 350. Just about drove me crazy !!
The square bodies are a classic. I have a 79 GMC Step Side
I like the old school gun racks in the back window. You certainly don't see them anymore. Old School for sure!
great fun video, glad you got her running..
I had an '85 that I bought new. Same paint scheme in two shades of blue. SWB
with dual tanks but 2 WD. I wish I had never sold it. Great truck.
Sadly, some ladies just don't understand how us guys love our trucks. I have never owned a full size pick up, but I did have an S10; I loved that truck , did so much with it, & I still miss it!
3:08 You can see the manual window crank that can save your life if you end up under water for some reason.
Thanks for saving the old square body.
Mike and Aaron great video! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
You guys are bringing back memories of my past!
You’re still the reigning champion and holder of the History Channel title 😂
I was trying to figure out what was older, the truck or the video 🤣
Corn has grown two fee between the last video and now!
Thats a great truck. I used to have a 1984 GMC Sierra Classic, full power accessories, 2 tanks, 8ft bed, topper - wish I had kept it.
Hey Mike there is a bolt in front of the motor you remove and put a longer one to hold that pin or a big gob of grease would help
You guys had lots of fun on that project. Nice work and great video.!👍🏻
Hi Mike,
Just like everyone else, i found myself smiling throughout the entire video!
And, that's a really nice truck!
Thanks
I love watching Gilligan and the skipper work lol
Do the 3/8 bolt on the front of the engine. Remove it and insert a longer bolt. Push the push rod up finger tighten the bolt. Install the fuel pump. Take the longer bolt out and replace with the original bolt.
on the front of the engine block on the right side of the block down low there 2 bolts one on top of the other .you can remove one and replace it with a longer one it will hold the fuel pump rod up so you can replace the fuel pump . then replace the short bolt and your done.
You have been holding out on us. The History Channel strikes again. Cool Ride!
I’m really conflicted about who to be more afraid of: the wife or the snake. Both are equally dangerous and not to be trifled with.
🤣😂!!
The snake will bite once. The wife will keep biting.
I had a 71 f 100 loved it. The old square bodies just have a great look. Stay safe
One of your best videos. You guys are a dynamic duo! 👍 That truck's a keeper!
If I remember theres a bolt on the front of the engine that you take out and put a longer one that will hold the fuel pump rod in place.
Lee
Great video! Always fun to watch you guys tackle another fun project!
