SMS Rail Lines: Morrisville, PA - Switching in a Polar Vortex

  • Having a weekday morning off, a trip was finally made to the SMS Rail Lines operation in Morrisville, PA to catch some shortline switching action. This branch of the SMS Rail Lines railroad operates out of the Penn Warner Industrial Park, interchanging for multiple businesses with Conrail in Morrisville Yard. On this day, they sent some empty lumber cars up to the yard, and did some switching of tank cars while waiting for inbound loads to come in. SMS is well-known regionally for using their fleet of Baldwin diesels - in Morrisville is DS-4-4-750 #102 - originally built for Youngstown Sheet & Tube in February of 1951. Now working in Morrisville for SMS, watch as the RR performs some switching on this extremely frigid morning. Enjoy!

      @@Bigjimvideo I just recently used Google's Earth feature so to check out the Pureland Industrial Park, remembering what I saw back in 1999, back before SMS built a service facility in Pureland for their fleet of power. Back then, a utility pole at a railroad crossing was their electricity source for any power tools. Their connection to the Conrail Shared Assets Operations had only one track so to access Pureland, not the pair of tracks there today. I saw a prime mover covered up with tarp back then. Too much more to describe!

      Thanks! It's definitely cool to see - a lot of the action that most people see are mainline trains, but you forget sometimes that there are these smaller operations out there.

    They don't waste any time moving around that area, do they! I need to get there one of these days too . . . Thanks for the incentive!

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, they don't. And they're extremely railfan-friendly too.

    The whole area where they were switching will be changing in the next couple weeks. Adding a switch for a new customer and moving the other switches to accommodate the new one.

    Is there a schedule for the trains here? I live a mile north but every time I have came to try to railfan there has been no trains.

      Usually every weekday morning - say around 9 am-ish is when they get started, and they go until they are done with the switching moves for the day - sometimes a few hours, sometimes more, sometimes less. If you go mid-late afternoon or later, you probably won't find them in action - ditto for weekends.

    What does "SMS" mean?

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SMS means...well...SMS. I don't know what/if SMS means anything (and Ive looked).

      I did find a comment as to what SMS stood for, capturing that comment in a screen shot capture. I will try and find it again.
      Update, 10/22/2023: SMS lines is (Jeff) Sutch-McHugh (brothers)-Services. All credit for this information goes out to "FMNUT," one who posts videos here on TH-cam.
      As I read it Mr. Jeff Sutch has partnered up the McHugh Brothers, former owners of the NewHope and Ivyland Railroad in New Jersey. Their railroad supposedly starting out with a pair of Baldwin locomotives. Today, it seems that McHugh does locomotive repair. (I have read a former comment somewhere whereby the Baldwin locomotives are very durable and reliable.)
