TRRS 419: CSX Local Train Y195 Switching PCA

  • In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Y195 is the job responsible for switching out customers around Wyoming Yard. This includes Wolverine Scrap, Hager, Wyoming Warehouse and Columbian Storage. But, it also includes one customer outside of the yard limits: Packaging Corp of America, or PCA for short.
    PCA is located a little over a mile from the yard limits at Lamar, and it usually the first duty of the Y195 crew.
    Today, we see the crew westbound from the yard, passing tied up N913, a coal train for West Olive. The conductor then uncouples the inbound cars and throws the mainline switch to begin the process.
    Along with the foreman and conductor trainee, the threesome pulls three boxes from the plant, and then spots three new ones in their place. Because the plant only holds three cars, extras are routed to Columbian Storage on the City Market lead, to be unloaded there.
    Those extras account for the remaining boxes on their train. The centerbeam will go to Hager Lumber, while the CHs and Gons will go to Wyoming Warehouse.
    After completing their switching moves, the crew puts their train back together, before shoving back to the yard using their Operation Lifesaver caboose, with the conductor on the point, once more passing the tied down N913.
    Consist:
    CSX 2630 [GP38-2]
    16 cars [Mixed]
    CSX 904091 [Operation Lifesaver Caboose]
    Location/Time:
    CSX GRT Sub, Grandville, MI, Along Viaduct St/Ivanrest xing, on 1-2-15 from 11:15 to 11:55 EST

      I haven't shot many like this in awhile because it kinda unnerves the train crews, who fear they'll break a rule and their boss will later find it.

    Very nice.It was very interesting to see the locomotive being operated by remote control.That impatient truck driver almost took out the crossing gate at the beginning.

    Being an engineer with a remote control is like having the ultimate model railroad-it's the same scenario in HO Scale-a DCC equipped locomotive you control with a handheld remote. The only difference is these guys operate 1:1 scale and get paid for their "operating sessions." Great video. I was happy to see the old Guilford (Boston & Maine) boxcar.

    An excellently shot video which also shows the efficiency of the best transport system humans have ever come up with. Self guided and so captivating that few things have ever come close to its appeal. Railways.

    Well shot, and lots of information (for the modellers like me). I am going to incorporate this location and switching action into my new layout that I am building. Thanks very much. I'll be sharing the video on my blog also.

      This should come through as I have posted other links in comments before.
      The post should be up within the next hour.
      Thanks again and keep posting. Love the rail action in your area. I model the US but live now in Australia. Spent 10 years in Texas (Austin and surrounds). Just love how you can reach out and touch the trains in the US. Not the same here in Australia.
      Best wishes

    Man! That looked like one cold day! Remote control what will they think of next trains that go from point to point with a operator in Jacksonville, Lincoln or Fort Worth that's controlling multiple trains. Even better a computer coordinating remotely all the trains in a subdivision. Scary that's sky net stuff.

    Oh man...I wish my warehouse still has this happening...I love trains! But then again the maintenance, and time it takes for the trains to shuffle the cars around, no wonder why only very few warehouses, and other businesses, still have the trains delivering/ and taking the cargo away

    • @mdgfb05
      @mdgfb05 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it actually takes longer to do it with trailers you know like park the trailer open it gt a forklift and take 1 thing at a time out and then organise in the warehouse then ship it out again ( if they do that )

    • @GEES44DC
      @GEES44DC 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more cost effective in most cases to drop a container off. Railroad still has the load but doesn't have the hassle of spotting and pulling the car.

    One more comment. In Mansfield, MA there is a similar customer setup as in this video. There is a customer called Milton's Distribution in Mansfield, MA, and the boxcars go right inside the building, just like in your video. The conductor has to open and close the door before and after they switch them out, respectively.

    • @Ithinkiwill66

    Does the yellow blinking light on top of the engine mean it is being radio controlled? If so, is the operator one of the 3 crewmen or are they somewhere else?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, the yellow light means they're in RC mode. Two of the crewmembers have belt packs for control. The RC is never done by a non-crewmember. The third crewmember in this scene was a conductor trainee.

    Is it normal to just...snap the brake hoses like that? I can't imagine that's good for them

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the airhoses are designed to part in that manner. Doing so, versus a slow release, triggers the car's emergency air brakes, so the cars left behind, while also tied down with handbrakes, are not sitting there with their airbrakes released.
