    I am really confused why no one went for any kind of heavy stax or non blue control spells.

    • @ArgentumEmperio
      @ArgentumEmperio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Because of two reasons:
      1. All control pieces that work and efficiently do their job at the pace cEDH is played at exists with the presumption that there will be a blue player to cover the deficiencies that non-counterspell control cards simply just can't cover for.
      2. Due to most atax pieces being built around skowi sown the opponent tge question becomes what to do in that time. Usually, once again, counterspells are used against key cards tha still despite sfax pieces gets played.
      So... why run star as heavily as one normally would do when yo are equally as likely to draw the cards yo need to win.
      Stax is only as good as the pieces that goes alongside it, so when 5hr alternative is to simply just win... its a rather easy choice wouldn't yo say?

    • @jtyree0226
      @jtyree0226 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ArgentumEmperio
      I get what you’re saying but the whole point of stax is to be one sided or asymmetrical. Slow down opponents while you gain the advantage. This “race to adnauseum” is dumb because you’re expecting to draw all your fast mana in your opening hand and opponents don’t. Doesn’t quit work that way. Interaction believe it or not is good.
      Yes, you can “just win”. But I’d rather slow and stop what opponents are doing. Especially in this case when there’s always a faster deck at table

    • @jacobellis2594
      @jacobellis2594 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jtyree0226 the problem with that is the consistiant card draw that blue provides. With Stars decks you need a sufficiant amount of card draw to outpace your opponents. If they are all playing linear decks the stax player will not have enough time to draw into the win. While the linear decks can draw into mana. Also with kr'rick being such a strong choice it negates a lot of what would be done with the staff pieces.

      @@PlayingWithPowerMTG I must admit as interesting as it was to see how quote unquote necessary blue is for a balanced game, I do vastly prefer watching slightly longer games of interaction and complex stack buildup, It makes for more interesting decision trees which is part of the fun of cEDH if you ask me, the pseudo goldfishing in this game was kind of like playing by yourself in a way.... Especially when you're a poor elfball player versus an all-black pool your deck is kind of designed to lose in this scenario.... Has the same issue as Kinnan, except monoblack pay life for mana adnaus drag racing totally runs it over... Doesn't even have the option of slow rolling so it doesn't get all its dorks removed and then comboing off in one turn once it has some pieces set up cuz it has no chance to compete with the speed of yawgies lad.

      Agreed. Took all the risk out of forbidden tutors. And I know it’s tier one. So was flash hulk and all the players wanted it banned. This is almost easier. You do have to resolve two spells with one more mana but the opportunity cost is lower since the forbidden tutors were playable before the ban and you don’t need to run dead cards in your deck unlike hulk piles where you have to run dead cards.

    OK so I ran into this the other day. Karn says "activated abilities" right? So I had a card that said when the activate abilities of artifacts or creatures draw a card and was told that tapping something for mana isn't an activated ability. Still kinda learning the massive rule book of this game so help?

    • @ben.shields
      @ben.shields 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll help you out, do you know the names of the cards for examples?

    • @ben.shields
      @ben.shields 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Was it Runic Armasaur? It says "Whenever an opponent activates an ability of a creature or land that isn't a mana ability, you may draw a card."
      If we look at the text of mana abilities on creatures (Elvish Mystic says "{T}: Add {G}.") or artifacts (Sol Ring says "{T}: Add {C}{C}.") we see that these ARE activated abilities.
      If I google "activated abilities, the mtg.gamepedia wiki has some nice summaries. It quotes the rules saying {Activated abilities are written as “[Cost]: [Effect.] [Activation instructions (if any).]”}.
      In this case the [Cost] for Elvish Mystic and Sol Ring is the {T} tap symbol. This is followed by a colon character : and then the [Effect] is to either add a green mana {G} or two colorless mana {C}{C}.
      However! Runic Armasaur says only cares about creatures and lands, not artifacts. Finally, Runic Armasaur says "that isn't a mana ability".
      If I google "mtg mana ability" and check mtg.gamepedia wiki again, it quotes the rules saying that a Mana Ability is "An activated or triggered ability that could create mana and doesn’t use the stack."
      Bringing it all together, tapping lands, creatures, or artifacts for mana is using mana abilities. Mana abilities ARE activated abilities. But Runic Armasaur does not trigger on mana abilities, so you can't draw off of them. (You could draw off of someone cracking a fetch land, they say "{T}, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Flooded Strand: Search your library..." which again has the activated ability form of [Cost] : [Effect]. They are lands and the effect doesn't add mana to your mana pool, so Runic Armasaur triggers and lets you draw)
      Have fun learning more!

    • @kirstiehope
      @kirstiehope 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With K'rrik out you still can't pay colorless mana costs (like for say an Aetherflux Reservoir you really want to cast). If Celebrant is out with K'rrik, the Celebrant becomes pay 3 life for 1 mana. You can use it to pay for anything, even the non B costs, if you have enough life and K'rrik on the table.

    @playing with power MTG - How was the infinite loop done
    I can't understand it

    • @kirstiehope
      @kirstiehope 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first loop requires Krrik in play, buried alive, an animate spell and having 10 or more life after casting Buried Alive and the animate spell. You animate Chainer (with Dance of the Dead in this case) and then require no further mana because you activate Chainer (BBB cost) by paying 6 life with Krrik and then pay another 3 life (as part of the Chainer cost) for a total of 9 life to bring Grey merchant into play. You gain a bunch of life from that ( usually 21 if there are 3 opponents). Then you use chainer to bring carrion feeder into play, sac grey merchant to carrion feeder and use chainer to again bring grey merchant back. You can do that infinitely to drain the table for infinite damage from Grey Merchant as long as you are gaining more than 9 life from grey merchant each time and have enough life to start the combo.
      The second combo is Aetherflux Reservoir, Bolas' Citadel, and Sensei's Divining Top all in play. Once those are all on board you can tap the divining top to draw a card and put Sensei's Divining Top on top of your library. You then pay one life with Bolas Citadel to cast it for free. With Aetherflux Reservoir in play you gain more than 1 life every time you do this and you can do it over and over, gaining more life each time (the life gain from Reservoir will be 1 then 2 then 3 then 4, etc). As soon as you reach 151+ life (assuming 3 opponents) you can then use the Aetherflux reservoir to do 50 damage to each opponent. This is not quite an infinite loop as you would run out of cards in your library eventually by using the divining top over and over but you can gain hundreds of life before that happens so it is more than enough to kill everyone with Aetherflux Reservoir.

      theres loads of interaction that could have stopped these combos, removal, tax, gy hate, even a well timed skull crack could have saved the table
      blue isnt necessary, it just has the most flexible answers and stack interaction, doesnt mean the other colors cant stop a combo lol, with 3 opponents its a little worrying nobody had a single answer in 2 games

    I had a fun idea floating in my had for interesting content you can do, for every match (in a three game series) the only deck building restriction is you cannot use cards that was used in a previous match (by any player excluding basic lands) so game 1 would be your everyday cedh match, game 2, now probably your common counterspells and combo pieces are “banned” and so forth,
    Knowing this do you bring game 1 a diverse deck to “deny” your opponents options? Well now we are talking strategy...
    Cheers,
