  • Hello, I screen recorded this video from Dr. Brian May’s Instagram stories so I could use his teachings and learn the “Bohemian Rhapsody” guitar solo myself. Since, a lot of people missed out on his story, I decided to publish screen - recording of his explanation on TH-cam so that everyone can learn the solo from the man himself. In this video he explains how to perform the solo on his iconic/ original “Red special” electric guitar that he constructed with his father. Dr. Brian Harold May is the lead guitarist of the legendary Classic rock band, QUEEN.
Brian Harold May CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and astrophysicist. He is the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen.
May was a co-founder of Queen with lead singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor, having previously performed with Taylor in the band Smile, which he had joined while he was at university. Within five years of their formation in 1970 and the recruitment of bass player John Deacon completing the lineup, Queen had become one of the biggest rock bands in the world with the success of the album A Night at the Opera and its single "Bohemian Rhapsody". From the mid-1970s until the early 1990s, Queen were an almost constant presence in the UK charts and played at some of the biggest venues in the world, including giving an acclaimed performance at Live Aid in 1985. As a member of Queen, May became regarded as a virtuoso musician and he was identified with a distinctive sound created through his layered guitar work, often using a home-built electric guitar called the Red Special.[3] May wrote numerous hits for Queen, including "We Will Rock You", "I Want It All", "Fat Bottomed Girls", "Flash", "Hammer to Fall", "Save Me", "Who Wants to Live Forever", "Too Much Love Will Kill You", and "The Show Must Go On".
The Red Special is the electric guitar designed and built by Queen's guitarist Brian May and his father, Harold, when Brian was a teenager in the early 1960s.
Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

I disagree. He was very influential and important to the band with a huge deal in their succes, but a great guitarist? Meh, he wrote some incredible songs but technically he was mediocre and usually too wasted to even play normally just like Hendrix.
It`s hard to say who`s the greatest but i`d rank Shawn Lane and Buckethead easily in the top 5 for both song writing and technical skills. Maybe throw Van Halen in there together with Malmsteen and i`d still have one very hard to fill spot with so many great players out there....

CPolishing is right. I’m not a huge Queen fan but I recognize Brian May as a living legend. I would definitely rank him as “one of the greatest guitarists of all time”. Not top 5 and probably not top 10, but recognizably great none the less. Newer players like Buckethead, Petrucci and HermanLi are technically impressive but they aren’t inspiring new players to the level that May, Page, Clapton, Nugent, Hendrix, Blackmore, Gibbons or Slash have. We’re not claiming any of their ranking, rather simply that May is a guitarist worth recognizing out of the history of everyone that’s ever picked up a guitar.

These lead solos we're in the background of my mind throughout the early 70s. Eventually I learned how to play and how to do pull-ons and pull-offs and all the fancy stuff. I really appreciate you coming onto TH-cam and sharing your talents far as I'm concerned you made the way for people like me to come and play the guitar. yeah....... i would have replied with "yeah.... get fucked.......... as if "
      LOL
back in the 80s they were untouchable gods in the heaven's
      There was no you tube
      there was no V.I.P. Package
There was no Meet and Greet
I mean unless you were a cancer patient and your dying wish was to meet Brian May, and even then...... LOL
No.... Meeting them was unheard of , Let alone having a personal guitar lesson
No.... No way in the world
Now, i ironically have personally had an amazing experience (just quickly)
      Jimmy Page and Robert Plant
Long story short I used to work at a pizza shop in western sydney maybe around , ohh i don't know , perhaps 30 years ago, give or take
we used to go down to a local bowling club where this bar maid used to work, she's a friend of mine
WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW LOL for a very long time was She was the cousin of Robert plant.
one (i think ) new years, it could have been Xmas though, can't remember i'm pretty sure New years eve or maybe a few days after new years, i asked her what she did for the holidays , she said , time with the family , she pulls out some polaroids ( which meant... she had pictures taken from a polaroid camera.... GOOGLE IT )
and in one of them is robert plant, my drink almost went up my nose when i saw it
i remember thinking it was a carboard cut out LOL (Because we had that shit in the 80s, My sister got a photo once taken with Madonna (cardboard cut out) so i figured that was that.
but no... She was roberts cousin
so anyone , i eventually go to meet robert AT HIS HOUSE (Amazing huh )
anyone, the price i paid was this .....
      - No photos'
      - No Autographs
      - no talk of stairway to heaven
of course i agreed to behave
anyway it was supposed to happen the following year when they came back from touring and had their family time and she was going to get the ok from Robert that she was "Bringing a friend" to the family get together
so between Led Zep not coming home for 5 years and her stringing me along
I WAITED 6 YEARS (i had almost given up hope that it was going to happen, to be honest)
then she said, ok you came come this year, it was like 2 months off , i was over the fucking moon (as you can imagine)
anyway , the deal was , i was to come to the house and basically just say hi to robert and i didn't expect anything further because it was his family time, i was respectful i said hi this and that, and was ready to leave.
Robert then invites me to the BBQ, i can't even explain what i was thinking. one one side, i didn't want to impose and be rude, on the other side, hell yes i wanted to stay ,but only if i wasn't being rude
i ended up staying there around 4 or 5 hours , we had a cool time, Needless to say i cannot even fucking begin to explain the level of cool that this was on and (it wasn't discussed ) but Jimmy was at the party as well. my conflict was LOL, i wasn't allowed to talk about stairway or tell him how cool i thought the song was and all that so i tried really hard to shut up. i introduced myself, i started talking about how i'm a guitarist and this and that and how they influenced me greatly etc etc, Jimmy ends up giving me like a quick 10min lesson
I mean... fuck me...... I got to hold and play Jimmy's Les Paul
so yeah... GETTING BACK TO THE POINT OF GODS
i had to sell my fucking soul to make this happen and even then it wasn't really guaranteed and then it sort of sprung up out of the blue just as i thought it was never going to happen
      and yeah..... it then did
but now... having brian may give us a personal tutorial in his shorts LOL
like you said...... WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IN A MILLION YEARS THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN
      no fucking way
      but .... it did
Anyway , i forever have a fucking cool story to tell the grandkids
and then i have a slew of people who will call bullshit on it .... LOL
      who gives a shit
at the end of the day through a freak coincidence in life and as a result of meeting a bar maid that i thought was a regular person , this turns into that and this goes with that a suzanne (LOL... I HOPE YOU GET THE REFERENCE) AND THEN WHAM... and suddenly life takes me to the home of Robert plant
and in what universe did i ever think that would happen ? NOT A SINGLE ONE
Now, in my line of work, i've met many celebritites, but i'll be honest, Robert and Jimmy were one of the one's that i could truly say were fucking awesome
some that i met didn't mean much to me , others were not a big deal, others were just part of work and the normality of it
but this , this was beyond cool and i will forever be thankful to the gods of rock that aligned the planets to make this even possible
      but back to brian
yeah , it's one thing for me to have had what i had and how hard that was to happen
BUT THIS..... WE DIDN'T EVEN ASK FOR THIS
SO YEAH.. THIS IS TRULY AMAZING and the fact that you can have any celebrity rock god doing this
      James hetfield
      Jon Bon Jovi
      it's truly amazing
anyway, i'm gonna shut up now LOL
sorry, it was meant to be a quick comment, i got carried away
but hey , i generally do when i tell this story because you can't just say i met robert, People won't believe it, it sounds like bullshit

Amazing that Brian doesn't get talked about enough as one of the greatest rock guitarists. I hate to use him as an example but his melodic lines and ability to make the guitar sing like an operatic soprano, is far superior to George Harrison. And most consider him a brilliant guitarist. So glad genius Brian has come back strong from all his health issues. He is such a quality human being and humanist needed badly in these uncertain times.

Its mainly bc then hed be up there with the likes of hendrix, gilmour, jimmy paige etc who are all definitely a level above him in writing both riffs and solos

    • @rman52
      @rman52 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@headphoneman10 Sorry but I don't consider Hendrix, Page, and especially Gilmore better at writing or playing riffs than Brian. Of course Hendrix was amazing. But while his solos are technically fantastic, he doesn't make the guitar sing like Brian. Everyone in Zep were brilliant players. An all star team of great musicians. But I would still rather listen to Brian do a solo than Page. But his riffs are out of this world. I don't see Gilmore as great as some others. Plus he is an ahole like everyone in that band. In prog, ELP, King Crimson, Yes, and Rush were so much better than Gilmores girls.

@@rman52 are u joking? Whatever u think about him as a person, david gilmours solos ar some of the greatest of all time. The solos on songs like comfortably numb, time, mother are incredible. Sure shine on u crazy diamond, probably the most iconic prog song of all time is mostly just a long gilmour solo. And also hendrix wrote a lot of great riffs, theres a reason many ppl still consider him the goat

Interesting! I just found this after trying to play along with Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time. I was surprised to find it’s in Bb so I guess Mr May must have tuned up a semitone allowing him to play open A/D/E shapes.

Grazie infinitamente grazie e grati a voi.
Un piccolo fans nell'immenso popolo dei GRANDISSIMI QUEEN.
