Crossroads - Eugene's Trick Bag Lesson (Analysis)
• Crossroads - Eugene's ...
In this video, I'll show you how to play Eugene's Trick Bag (Paganini Caprice 5) on electric guitar. This one is probably the most accurate Steve Vai's - Paganini 5th Caprice Crossroads Lesson tab you can find.
Paganini Caprice 5 is one of 24 pieces composed by virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini in the early 19th century. The piece is known for its incredible speed and extremely high technical difficulty. Paganini is said to have been able to play it on one string, but there is no evidence to support or refute this. The piece is also associated with the movie Crossroads as "Eugene's Trick Bag", which was written and performed by Steve Vai and heavily inspired by the caprice. (wikipedia)
This video is Eugene's Trick Bag lesson video.
Picking selections maybe not be the best but this transcription will be useful for you and I am planning to records a performance video.

After numerous times throughout the years of trying to play this piece at half speed I can now say that I finally can't play this.
haha
Thats why they have 1/4 speed ; )
Welcome to the club!
you're lying if you say you can't play at least 0:53 to 1:11 even after trying for years
yes u can bro keep playing!!
Guys play it in 2x speed then it sounds exactly like how Steve Vai played it
Thank you for discovering this
Oh yeah!😊
bro thanks
I was kinda happy he played it nice and slow. Great video to tuck away to learn this piece.
@@JoeTalaga Agreed it almost sounded like he slowed it down in post
Thank you for recoding this at half speed for teaching instead of showing off. Great video! Been working at this for weeks now.
People already thought Paganini was demon-possessed on the violin. I can't imagine what they would think if he was given an electric guitar
Totally! If i had a time machine i would travel back in time and give all the classical composers electric guitars.
It would have been useless because there was no electricity. Think about it dude
A violin in the right hands can sound just as hard
Considering Paganini played classical guitar, he's probably wonder why someone gave him an inferior type of guitar
That is just amazingly mesmerising and intoxicating. Thank you Ozz. I ll try this when I retire. My wife almost left when I was practicing Summer by Vivaldi lol.
Thank you🤘🤣
Greting from rusli have a nice day my brothers
Thats funny
Ditch the wife

At half speed this is still an extremely challenging piece! thanks for posting this and demonstrating that even at lower tempo you can still make something sound very musical and put it at the reach of hobbyists and students wanting to explore and learn. 👍👍
This is what happens when musicians actually put time and energy into writing their music.
.
Always cracks me up when people are talking about how some modern artist released a whole album in a week as if that's a good/impressive thing...
I'm watching and listening and I"m like, 'Is he gonna miss anything?'.... And then I got to the end and it was like, 'Nope. He didn't miss anything!".. That was about as spot on as it gets, sir. I appreciate all the leg work you did to get this JEM ;) to the masses.
after 3- 4 weeks of practicing about 1 - 2 hours per day and taking breaks. I can play this at x1.24 its peed. Keep making progress!
1.24 it's peed? I would see a Dr. 😂
@@johnmason9221 lmao 🤣
Great to see a fully transcribed version of this, played slow, with clean view of picking hand and fingering hand. Top marks! I'll have another crack at it :)
This is quite literally *THE* most perfect rendition/tutorial out there. Nicely done.
Thank you!
Actually there are a few places where the fingering could be a bit better, just to make things easier when at full speed in my opinion
What? It's half speed. How on earth is this a perfect rendition?
In terms of accuracy.
Paganini was a true master, thanks for doing the hard work on this piece of music.
Thank you so much! It’s really nice to see the notes lined up with the fingers in almost Slo-mo. I’m trying to learn this song and it’s so hard to get the tabs to match with my head hears to match what my fingers will do lol. Slowing it down helps
Não vou sossegar enquanto eu não tirar esse solo maravilhoso...Muito obrigado por postar esse excelente tutorial 🙏🙏🙏
I've been trying to play this since the movie came out. Your videos are incredible, thank you for sharing your talents!

Great lesson and tab! Got my next project. Thank you!
Absolutely perfect man, congratulations and thank you!
Amazing lesson as usual ! Need to try this out.
Thank you🙏🤘
i thought it said “no need to try this out” bc i was like ON GOD

Your welcome. Enjoy!
"What's a matter boy, can't talk? Bet can't play none either?" One of the best scenes in any movie ever!!!
Gonna give this a go, thanks for your hard work! 🙏
thx for that dude, awesome job
Excellent Job Ozz Guitar ! Very clean playing with tabs that are easy to see. In my opinion this is now the best, no B.S. Eugene's Trick Bag guitar video on youtube. I like'd & will share just keep em commin bro!
I'm a big fan of the movie. my high school classmate was awesome guitar player and played this piece for our talent show. I was inspired and learned it myself. Fast forward 34 years later I forgot the whole thing. I'm back to relearn. LOL. thank god for youtube cuz back then I think I found the guitar tab from a magazine 😂
That is one spot on transcription brilliant 👍
Wow that was so good
Espetacular, parabéns.
Listooooo! A aprenderlo y a mejorar como guitarrista...
Muchas gracias x lo que compartis y enseñas. Bendiciones.Saludos!
Thanks!!!
Thank you for sharing the tab!
Thanks for this man
Even at half speed it sounds incredible. Flawless.

You gave me flashbacks memories from when I used to play this theme when i was in High School.
at first attempt in one day i am honestly saying i have learned this pice at half speed accurately thanks brother
Extraordinario , gracias por permitirnos apreciar la belleza de cada nota....
Awesome video bro. Thx for all u do🫡
Thank you very much for uploading the tabs of this piece of art. I subscribed to your YT and im looking foward to see more videos!!!
Muy muy bueno..por fin alguien qe TOCA CLARO ..DESPACIO..Y ENTENDIBLE..para los que qeremos aprender algo tan complejo en la guitarra..FELICITACIONES POR EL VIDEO..!!
After hearing it at half speed, I think that I enjoy even more the original version, thanks a lot for this! Really appreciated!!
I've noticed that many shred pieces sound better when played a bit slower.
Very good job. Its nice to listen this piece in slow way, totally neccesary to understand every part. This is the way about how to srudy and practice. Congratulations
Uhhh increíble!!! Gracias por las tablaturas y el ejemplo!!! Lo intentare hasta q salga!!! Saludos y gracias! Bien tocado!
te salio?
This is absolutely fantastic and a great lesson method. I have always hoped Vai would do and release a full length version of Caprice #5. It is such a great piece.
why would you rather have a lesson from vai? he clearly wasn't quite up to it as can be seen in the movie.
@@mattmobile7882 He was having an off day.
Very impressive, thanks for making this video! 👍
Love this piece
Thanks for this excellent lesson and the comprehensible speed....... at full tilt it would be beyond it. !!!!!

just beautiful, both in accuracy and tone. I'm struck by how much of that pholiphia g.o.a.t song sounds like its phrased off these a min arrp varients.
Very cool!)
Glad I found this as I am attempting to learn it, though not holding out hope of ever playing at full tempo. I think it sounds far better at this speed as the notes are clear and the melody stands out. Might be able to play it at this tempo after 10 years of practice!
Keep at it I learnt this many years ago . I found that the easiest way was to break it down in segments learning each at a time print it out then get yourself some highlights pens and break break it down 4 notes at a time
@@pemj7360 thanks for the advice. Will certainly do this. Cheers.
Me: Change speed at 2x..
Also me: Aahhh yessss 🤤
Amazing lesson dude thanks 👍🏻👍🏻🤟🏻

@@veryopen-mindedperson5276 yes i am
I think 1,75X is the most accurate speed to replicate the original version, sounds too fast in 2x for me.
Awesome cool sounding specially for me the diminished part🤘
this video is sick, and also super helpful

Something to practice...watching it full speed seems impossible to do...u give me hope!!!❤❤❤
Appreciated this guitar lesson
I remember when the film crossroads came out . I was 18 then and wanted to learn to play this very tune Eugene's bag of tricks as we k ew it back then . I had a westone series 2 lead 24 fret guitar. I played this tune to death and my fingers bled lol 😆 😂 nice to see its still being learnt. Finger pluckers have more fun
Your tone is very good. Lets each individual note stand out instead of being drowned in mud.
Thank you. Most of the guys didn't like..
Well i like it very much! Hoping for a video on how you did the tone! Thanks
Sounds great to me!
amazing, very useful way, thanks
hello good I came to say that your guitar solo is very good, there was a brazilian band called mamomas asasinas her guitarist bento hinoto presented a part of this solo was very top search I recommend it 100%
Eugene's fingers were a paid actor but his fretting positioning was actually pretty accurate damn.
He played it like a classical guitarist would on an electric guitar!
Bro hit the 25th fret note on a 21 fret tele
Well, it was the Louisiana Voodoo Charm.
Thanks for this!
Beautiful Ibanez and rendition!
Speed it up to 2x then it is the original speed
I’ve been doing this so wrong for so long!! Thank you! Back to the start for me! 😂

I was waiting for long time for this. Thank you so much from Japan!!
Thank you🙋🏻♂️
I remember me and my friend watching Crossroads back in 86' when it came out. We both played guitar and were huge fans of Steve.
And then the dual scene happens.
I remember both of us laughin' watchin' Ralph pretend to play this part. He's one of the most uncoordinated actors I've ever seen.
And they had his character playin' this piece in the most difficult way possible! Lots of clever editing lol! But what had us rollin' on the floor was watchin' Steve play it for real so effortlessly, you'd think he was yawning while takin' a piss!!
And all of a sudden he starts to get fumble fingers! It must of been more difficult for him to pretend to fuck up than it was for him to play it without fuckin' up!!! 😅
yeh --And all of a sudden he starts to get fumble fingers! It must of been more difficult for him to pretend to fuck up than it was for him to play it without fuckin' up!!! 😅
@@ShpookyMetal Yeah Steve was pretty bad at making it look like he screwed up. Not an actor :)
Great service to humanity and bedroom guitarists 😝✌️🎸🎸

Don't tell me you're gonna do a 2X full rendition of this type of piece again? cause' it sounds GOOOOOOD!!!
I'll try :)

There is only do.

btw. I'm liking your content so i decided to subscribe :)
Only thing I can see in my head right now is Steve Vai giving that look to Ralph Macchio right before it all starts going downhill.
This is epic..gotta commit to this one..
Sent shivers down my spine. I know what I am doing today!
Is this one of the hardest things to play on guitar? Nevertheless, it sounds epic
I don:'t know is it hardest but it's not easy :)
@@OzzGuitar that's for sure.. awesome video by the way
Hardest is such a strange question to ask. I would guess you'd have to go with very fast tempo, combined with a variety of playing techniques (alternate picking, outside/ inside picking, legato, sweeping, pinches, bends, tremolo, multi-finger tapping, etc.). Generally speaking the faster something is, and the more the pitch changes, the harder it is. You're probably into some of the more bizarre tech death stuff, even a simple phrase is hard at 300bpm. But even then, maybe not. Jason Richardson has said the hardest thing he wrote was the country section of Hos Down because the tempo is just very fast. He's also an excellent player, and writes a lot of interesting and complex guitar parts. A famous standout is the fast section of the River Dragon Has Come solo by Nevermore; actually playing it accurately in time is quite difficult. There are some solo guitar artists like Angel Vivaldi, etc. that play some pretty wild stuff. I'm not sure if the question has an adequate answer. Even a lot of the fast guys, if you said improvise a solo over a complex jazz chord progression, or play something in some odd timings they would struggle, but working jazz guys could do it all day. There are also classical songs that weren't really written to be arranged on the guitar, but generally they can be adapted. It just depends.
Imagine listen to pagganini in his days ,playing his"special " violin !!
They must have thought he was posessed !😅
actually they did. Many thought it was the devil that gave him his musical skill. Do a Google search. :D
