What is the most economical kibble you recommend for a multiple-dog household? Especially when they are large breed dogs and eat a lot. With inflation, it is getting harder and harder to feed our pets without going broke.
I've fed Victor for a few years now. The salmon and sweet potato formula. No problems. Also the cats get the cat food. All's well. They also get other add ins. Im stickin with Victor. There's a WHOLE LOT of other crap brands I would have showed before Victor and Orijen.
Victor is an amazing brand the four brands that she mentioned are actually amazing brands for dogs I have been feeding my dogs diamond for 11 years nothing wrong with it
@@mikeybyrnzie2683I’ve heard that Victor doesn’t do actual trial testing nor do they comply with any wasva guidelines (don’t misinterpret with “approved” as wasva DOES NOT endorse or approve dog food brands openly, they do however have guidelines you can follow on choosing dog food)
I had a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix that lived for 17 years on Purina. Now I have a goldendoodle that loves Purina Pro Plan with fresh veggies such as peas, green beans, sweet potatoes, and broccoli. I also give him cooked chicken breast that I buy from a small meat market where you can watch butchers cut up and wrap the meat. He’s 9 months old and is healthy! I pray that he continues to be
@@katej2538hey there !! Which bag of orijen food did you feed your Mal ? I have a 7 year old Mal and we fed her orijen but switched her up and currently eats Muenster Milling
Purina is quality, balanced diet. Goats milk is extremely high fat content, and xan cause pancreatitis. I don't believe this person knows what she is discussing. I hear a huge amount of misinformation with a very few true things given.
I was feeding my dog Orijen food and I really believed in the company and their philosophy, but then they sold out. I kept an empty bag from before the sellout to compare if it changed, and the ingredients have changed a lot for the worse and it still costs $140 per bag. Now, my dog doesn't like it and his stools are much different, also for the worse. I have decided to switch him to Carna4 along with freeze dried and fresh meals. It's so disappointing when these companies make promises to our pets and to us and then break those promises and let us down. I wish no one any ill will, but part of me hopes that enough people will stop paying for Orijen to send a message. The people who truly care and keep it real are the ones who deserve to have our business. Thanks for all you are doing for us, Rachel!
Thanks for this comment! I'm currently looking for human grade food for my puppy and was about to try this brand but now I know all the pre-sellout-food is gone ...will continue to keep looking.
We had planned on feeding my puppy Orijen, but we switched to Open Farm as soon as I heard about the Mars acquisition. He loves his Salmon kibble with freeze dried raw toppers and bone broth. We rotate through the different proteins so he gets a little bit of everything!
This would be more helpful if you compared similar priced foods and gave some lower priced options. Sure, people who feed Victor would like to feed Carna4 or Open Farm- but they are around $50 or more for ten pounds of food. It would be cheaper to feed a balanced fresh food diet. The human providing care isn't always doing so well financially, and we all need to compromise to survive. I'd like to hear about the best foods that are priced similar to Victor. It seemed like reasonable value at that price point and that when combined with fresh food this was an affordable, decent diet. It's not like people feeding this stuff don't wish we could do better. Not only do poor people benefit from having pets in their life, most dogs are adopted and needed any home, and not every home can provide top of the line food and health care but that doesn't mean it isn't a loving home and better than the shelter or death. I love dogs; but having worked at a kennel/doggy daycare, I've seen people spend more on their dog than I spent on my college education and yet their dog is obese, untrained and in need of their time and bonding. Our society's priorities are insane.
Thanks to you, Dr. Becker and Dr. Ian Billinghurst, I switched my puppy early on from kibble to gently cooked and raw food. He eats Raised Right, Viva, and Bones and Co. He is nearly 8 months old and doing amazing!
This is amazing! Those are 3 of my VERY favorite foods! You are doing an awesome job, and btw, it's pretty cool to be mentioned in the same sentence as these other legends. Thank you for making my day
My Uncle had an Irish Setter that lived to like 22 years old. It lived on a cattle ranch, got to run around the ranch all day and eat the innards of cattle. Just saying. Everything about city life is less than ideal for a dog. I try to supplement my dogs diet with a little calf liver every now and then.
@@jeffk464 Unless the calf liver comes from healthy range cattle, then I would never let my dog within sniffing range of calf liver, as the standard grocery store stuff is loaded with toxic hormones and antibiotics that are carcinogenic, the liver attempts to strain toxins from the blood.
Love you Rachel but I disagree with your approach on this. There's probably 100+ foods you could have added to the list before Orijen. I get they were acquired and that's valuable info so people can watch their labels, but to put the food on this list when it's clearly not a worst kibble nor has formula changed ... was wrong. Probably scared a few people off a high quality kibble as well. At least the "Amazing Grains" formula is ... the original formula has lentils. I'm sure you did it to get clicks .. I don’t know? Because that food doesn't fit the title of your video. As always, I appreciate your content but did not care for this video.
I’ve been using Regional Red for my fur babies and I agree I think she was wrong to include orijen! Even after orijen was in the list for the DCM my vet said it was a high quality kibble and that more research needed to be done. I also top food with tuckers.
A year ago she rated Orijen Amazing Grains a top 5 kibble brand. She’s 100% doing this for views. This also makes researching legit puppy/dog diet way harder for us average dog owners.
10# bag of chicken leg quarters runs 0.69/lb where I live. Eggs are cheap(ish). Liver is cheap. Veggies are cheap. Shop the markdown meats and sales. Its really not that expensive at all to make a homemade raw diet, and you'll save a fortune on vet bills too. 👍
I've battled kidney disease in my daschund for a few months, and tomorrow I'll have to end the battle for her. We had a massive snow storm and I can't get out today. I held her all last night as she ached in my lap all night- I'm so sad, wish I was positive it is Purina, I started making my own meals and 4 dogs love it. I waited too late for her, and one other, my little guy chihuahua tested for kidney disease. But he tested better so I hope he's with me longer. I'm sad, and angry. The crap they throw in the food, and ours, and no accountability. Sound familiar pfizer!!
I am just seeing your comment. My little Chihuahua mix was 15 1/2 years old when he was diagnosed with pancratitis and kidney disease. Spent a few days at the vet and they had started him on Hill's Science Diet K/D. I bought the Hill's dry and a few cans to feed him with at home. He wouldn't eat it! Of course, the vet was baffled because she told me he was eating it fine while he was there. I researched online and found pet-parent reviews about Dr. Harvey's Miracle Diet to treat kidney disease. I ordered a sample, added a healthy protein, and my little guy loved it and my other dog, too. Continued feeding Dr. Harvey's and about 6 months later, his test results came back that he no longer had kidney disease! My vet told me she had never seen that happen before! Of course, I was thrilled and I knew it had to be the food I was feeding him. I never went back to feeding my dogs kibble and they stayed on Dr. Harvey's until they passed away. Dr. Harvey's can be purchased online directly from the website or ordered from Amazon. To get the free samples, just contact them through the website. I hope your furbabies are doing better now.
Raw food diets often cause kidney disease, so don't be so sure it was the Purina. Kidney disease/failure is fairly common in dogs/cats no matter what you feed them.
I love you for doing this along side rodney habib, dr.baker and some others. This is very helpful and hopefully these big corporations will learn to start making food that is actually food. We must share this and maximize the awareness
@@Albaseer100 no thanks I don’t need distractions am only taking rachael’s words for quality.. if ur claims are legit (i doubt looking at your profile pic choice) get rachael to review it .. otherwise go find a better job than seeking watch clicks .. who are you again?
It's has been years since I've had furry friend. But, my heart is healed and open again. I have a playlist just for pooches and your videos make up most of that playlist because I learned so much from you and you're nice a person. So, thank you kindly for sharing your wisdom. I'm about a year a way from getting my doggie. I don't want to learn as I go like I did the first time around, therefore, been watching your educational videos so, when that great day comes, I will be ready to go. Cheers, from Toronto. Have a great day!
I know the pain well, it can be so hard. My heart goes out to you, and I am honored to be a small part of your new journey. Please keep me updated, thank you!
SO much easy to understand info here! Thank you! I’ve had a feeling for awhile we just aren’t able to read thru the deceptive labeling anymore.. I’m still new here but have learned so much from this video alone of mistakes I’m making, (along with going broke!) 😩 I believe in rotating dry now along with fresh & I can tell you when you think you’ve purchased the best and the dog sniffs it and backs up, trust them. There’s something in there they aren’t supposed to have (at least in my opinion so far.) Again, thanks for hard work!
Currently testing new foods...I swore by Acana, but noticed QUICKLY how my babies reacted to the food recently. I've had sudden upset tummy issues after the Mars takeover. Currently trying Stella & Chewy...babies are all digging it and immediate changes noticed for the better after only the 1st bag.
Huh, very interesting. I have been feeding my 5 year old dog Acana (first 3 years) and most recently Origen (last two years) because of all the recommendations and what i thought to be quality ingredients. I decided on this food as it had limited ingredients and i could avoid chicken which seemed to stop the paw licking and itching she had initially. The last few months she has gone back to licking and chewing at her skin and paws like crazy. Of course paying for vet visits is not very helpful as they say "we see this all the time in dogs" and "it could be a number of things" so it just comes down to trying different foods to see what works best. I just got SquarePet because it was recommended but I don't love the ingredients but maybe the hydrolyzed protein is what will help my dog not be so itchy? I'm giving it a chance though but I will check out the dog food that Rachel recommends for sure.
Very informative. We do feed our dogs Orijen and so far we have no issues. Our poodle mix is THE most picky eater...he doesn't even eat any barf. He does love cooked chicken and has been eating Orijen without any issues.
I cook for my 5 dogs every single day. They get fresh turkey, beef, lamb, rice, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, apples, blueberries, eggs, and goat milk yogurt. They also get a super high quality dehydrated dry dog food to nibble on (Rawz). They're all super healthy and happy.
its great you cook for your dogs so much better than any kibble but i wouldnt feed rice as its a grain and a carb which dogs can not digest it can cause leaky gut which then can lead to other problems
Hi, hoping you see this. So I supplement w homemade organic food- but my question is- I'm wanting to go all homemade, how much should I feed them? I have great pyrenees eating 4-6 cups a day- free feeding. Any suggestions?
@debracoones1161 Great question. I usually just let my dogs eat until they're full(just don't let them over eat). Usually, about 2 cups for my beagles and 3 cups for my large pit bull. Just an FYI, I also feed them salmon from time to time and mostly include steel cut oats when I'm not using rice or barley. Also, don't forget to include calcium, such as ground up egg shells. The goats milk yogurt also provides calcium. And lastly, I always keep human grade freeze dried kibble available for them throughout the day. Good luck. You'll really see an improvement in your dog's health and energy levels.
I'm in a group and they throw around that purina iams science diet are wsava compliant. But I cant comprehend the soy and corn etc. Can you touch on this wsava and why these people are dictating these foods to be so healthy
Im having a really difficult. My vets in the area are terrible. Forced to get vaccines, very expensive, Spock is a chihuahua mix and itches incessantly. They recommend benadryl or apoquel. I bought Farmer’s dog , but Spock doesn’t like it. Where do I go from here?
I would go to an independent pet store that gives out samples or sells small packages of food to try out. Also some independent stores may exchange bags if your dog doesn't like it. My dog loves Open Farm and Simple Petfood Project
I have to add : Benadryl can be deadly . I can’t trust my VETERINARIAN any more after he insisted that ROYAL CANADIAN is his recommendation . Just as can’t trust most politicians ha ha ha
I’ve been feeding my 4 dogs Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice for years now. Actually switched on a recommendation from The Dog Food Advisor. And $40 for 40 pounds at Tractor Supply is an awesome deal for a quality food. No issues or complaints from the dogs. 🤷🏼♂️ 🐕 💙👍🏻✌🏻
They recalled all there dry dog food last month, about the time my vet said it looks like your LGD has fungal and stop feeding it that brand dog food and keep a sealed jar for me and You… he is sending it to be tested in England 🏴
Purina Pro Plan sensitive Skin and stomach is a great food..I would not recommend any other Pro Plan foods. The salmon they buy on the commodity market so it’s usually the best . We add sardines and veggies to our Pro plan. You have to be very careful with Dairy products it gives them the poops. BTW- all kibbles are owned by 5 dog food companies.
Dear Rachel, I want to thank you for being so passionate about teaching us what you have learned over the years about caring for our dogs in the best ways we can. You are so very giving, and I for one, so appreciate you. Thank you so very very much. You seem like a real sweetheart!! ❤🤗
My dog suffered allergies switched grain free orijen within 3 days his hair was Shiney. Less to no sweeping of dog hair on floor his energy was increased and playful and he picked the plate! Vs spitting it out like he did for Rachel nutri and pedigree. Hw loves is and his poop is great! Love that I found orijen! No more allergies!
I’ve been feeding my retriever border collie mix, purina pro plan since she was a puppy. She will be 15 years old on November 7. I will continue to feed her that food, but thank you for the discussion on different types of foods.
The owner of my local pet store, not a chain, said that the freak out about origin and arcana is not warranted. At least not right now. So look at the bag before you just automatically dismiss it. She says that so far the ingredients are staying the same and everything is the same so I wouldn't be throwing the baby out with the bathwater just yet on those brands.
@nogames8982 Exactly! Although she says Orijen uses feed grade meat, that is not what the mfg says. That package she used (Regional Red Amazing Grains) is a great food and only about 18% carbs unlike a lot of kibble that is 40% carbs. Until I find candy in my dogs bag or she doesn’t eat it anymore, I sticking with Orijen.
@@kylasbibi I don't quite understand the hard backlash against this company just because of rumors. If they start coming out with an inferior product than fine slam them all you want. But to put that food on this list, I think is utter BS. she could've literally picked hundreds of other brands so I think this was just a really bad choice.
@@nogames8982I remember when Merrick was bought by Nestle in 2015. It’s was a good dog food. At the time Merrick was very close to Orijen. It took a while but Merrick lowered their meat content, then upped the carbs. I would not buy now. If I see that kind of change in Orijen, then I will look for another dog food. I will say at this time, she was totally wrong putting Orijen on this list with foods we all know are lesser foods. Not to mention she provided info about Orijen that was inaccurate. It just makes me wonder 1) why did she do that and 2) what does she have against Champion pet foods
Have a Mal who has gone off her Orijen Red post acquisition. Vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety. D/C'd kibble for gently cooked and she has greatly improved. Still monitoring but am done with dry dog foods. Premium price for inferior practices and ingredients IMO.
I love Diamond Naturals dry food for cats and I also use Tuna and Solid Gold dry cat food. It is hard to get Diamond Naturals now in stores. Rice is lower in gluten. Gluten is in wheat/barley/rye....oats/corn/rice. Gluten may hurt the gut lining so less nutrients absorb. Corn/soy/canola oil is GMO with Roundup. Sensitive stomach is due to gluten etc.
I don’t have dogs or cats, I have tegus which are omnivorous lizards and do very well on high quality cat or dog food but never kibble but because of this I do a lot of research into what makes a good quality cat and dog food. I do a blend of 70% fresh raw for cats with 30% freeze dried raw (I put different varieties of F.D to give them different micronutrients) plus added fruit and veg of my choosing. I find your channel very informative, thanks for the videos.
I rotate their food . Raw twice a week , using the SOJOS Mix a Meal., Carla 4 , then SOJOS freeze dry , Curious why SOJOS is never mentioned in your programs. ?
Why are vets recommending some of these brands? I have a 15 week old Pug and my vet has recommended Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin, Hill Science Diet, and Eukanuba. My vet doesn't recommend any of the fresh food brands like Farmer's Dog and Ollie.
The reason vets recommend these foods is because these foods put massive amounts into vet schools. They are familiar with these brands. Purina, Royal Canin and Hills Science diet have very deep pockets. Now that isn’t to say that some of their food is not decent. However, IMHO there are plenty of brands out there that are better.
Has a scientist ever cured anything I only give kudos to this doctor because he knows his s*** other than that a doctor is just a franchisee but this particular one knows how life works
Another informative video. My cats eat mostly chicken thighs or raw ground beef, with bone broth on both. Once a week a tin of sardines. No more dry food. One cat stopped eating it anyway.
Is Open Farm willing to disclose who actually manufactures their food yet? I requested that information about a year ago and they responded (in writing) saying that they won’t disclose that information because it’s “proprietary.” All they would say was that it’s a manufacturer in the Midwest with 30+ years experience. That’s a hard pass, for me. If a company won’t disclose who the manufacturer is, it makes me think they’re hiding something.
Any smart pet good company won't tell u their supplier... open farm is on Susan thixtons list and their suppliers all have to provide continuous verification documents for quality
I've used Diamonds Naturals Lamb and rice for 10 years now my dogs love it and i have a 13yr old lab and a 9yr old lab and a 4 yr old Puggle all doing good on it so would not switch!!!
But Purina, along with Royal Canin, Hill's (worldwide), Eukanuba & IAMS (not in the UK/Europe) are five safe food brands that follow guidelines by WSAVA.
Orijen's ingredient lists have already changed from what they used to be. They now use synthetics to make up for the change. It used to be that they only supplemented with copper and zinc, if I recall correctly. They also used to make their meals in-house, so don't be surprised if it is now streamlined and sourced from other untraceable meal renderers. Their line that doesn't currently use meals is their Fit & Trim. Just in general, another reason why you don't want conventional grains or fillers is that these crops are often sprayed with glyphosate before harvest in order to dry it out for dictating when they can be ready for harvest.
I’m not disagreeing with your review but I had a question. Why do so many veterinarians recommend Purina Pro Plan? Recently my vet recommended Purina for an anal Gland infection. They recommended Salmon and sensitive skin or Fiber Balance from Purina. It’s frustrating as a dog owner to see so many disagreements on the best food to feed your dog.
This comment is old, but for anyone else who is baffled by the apparent disconnect between vets and online pet food gurus and don't buy in to the "kick back" conspiracy theories: the answer is science. The foods recommended by vets normally have had the most testing done. So, while they may not be the best food, vets know they're safe and that they work. The same can not be said for these more indie dog foods that have zero testing done on them and rely on consumers thinking they sound healthy. Also being more trusting of science, vets understand that so called "fillers" such as rice and maize have lots of nutritional benefits. And dogs being "scavengers" does not mean that dogs 100 years ago were on a BARF diet. tldr; if your vet recommends Purina Pro Plan then unless your dog really doesn't agree with it, it's a perfectly good food to be feeding them.
@@celticwelshhave to disagree. Vets, like doctors learn very little about actual nutrition. A dog food rep comes in and sells them on their marketing spiel and the more they sell the bigger discount or “rewards” they get. I have 20 years experience working in a vet hospital, licensed veterinary technician and certified animal dietitian. Look at the ingredients in pro plan. Speaks for itself.
YOUR SOOOO HELPFULL !! Im getting a shipoo very soon and breeder tells me shes on kibble, in the back of my head ive ALWAYS KNEW AND FELT HOMEMADE FOOD IS ALWAYS BEST ! But since im not really sure on what to feed and amounts i would like to use half kibble/ half fresh just until I know what is best !! ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO SWITCH TO FRESH FOODS !!??
There is a book titled Gulp. It talks about the human digestive system, but there's a chapter in there that, although I'm sure it wasn't intended, is a great anti-kibble, informational source. He basically talks about how companies spray a bunch of other crap onto their food because they've taken all the taste of nutrition out of it by making it. Quite interesting.
I make kibble for a living here in the uk but I fed my dog's raw some high quality kibble is ok but if on a budget try 50% raw 50% good grain free kibble it's a decent compromise and add sardines twice a week
@@tinyjewel1989 about ten a week and add a raw egg with ground down shell for calcium . I did not go by my dog's weight just do what' you feel is right
Great video, thank you! I bought Purina for me dogs, almost instantly my dogs had diarrhoea. I thought they were just unwell and was so bad, my dogs were seriously dehydrated. After about 5 days, I stopped feeding them Purina. The next day they were back to themselves. I now only feed my dogs with local Australian brand products with no fillers!
@@RachelFusarothank you for your very aducational video. My 16 month Sheepadoodle is on the raw diet. Excluding chicken, because he is allergic to it. Last week I found sign of allergie in his eyes. And he is a good eater. Than you.
As soon as Victor dog food is back on the shelf I am going back to that brand. The stools are perfect, the coat is beautiful, my dog thrives on Victor. I switched to diamonds naturals while the recall is going but stools seem mushy and my Aussie’s coat is not as shiny. If victor does not come back I will switch to Eukanuba, or Nutro.
I have a german shepherd that has to be on a low protein diet. Best under 23% she develops bladder stones that develop with a high protein diet. I regularly have to test her pH urine to make sure she is still in the "normal range". I know you don't like low protein diets, but some furbabies need it. Thank you for putting this video together
Yes, I can barely afford my dog food but I would rather starve than let him go without so my dog food cost quite a bit because he's so big. I'm afraid the Purina I have been feeding him has been harming him cuz there's so much out about Purina now making dogs sick. Scooby isn't sick but has two tumors and they came about sometime after I changed his dog food to Purina. So now I'm trying to figure out what the best brand would be but all these people asking which best food to buy aren't being answered. Does anyone know a good brand? I know it's going to cost more than Purina but I would like to find the best for the least.
I have a Labrador that is allergic to turkey, white & sweet potatoes, soybeans, wheat grain, brewer's yeast, peanuts and peas. My vet has suggested to stay away from all fowl because of the turkey. I also do not want grain-free. The only food that I could find that doesn't include any of these is the Purina Pro Plan Adult sensitive skin & stomach in the salmon and rice flavor. I would really like a higher end food, but they all contain her "allergic" ingredients. I'm considering making all of her food myself. She has already lost most of her fur from her sides down. We are very stressed over this and would be grateful for suggestions. Thank-you in advance!!
Could you do a segment on how you can feed 2 large spinones cost efficiently. I can not afford to feed only raw or fresh food. I need to split it with a good kibble.
I cook for my 3 dogs…with vegetables, chicken or turkey and brown rice with turmeric, black pepper and ginger which are all great for dogs. They do also have a little bit of kibble Purina Pro. Blueberries Sardines in water, tuna also in water. Sometimes eggs..always have protein for them 🥺

I'm shocked to see Proplan, as most shelters and vets that are social media present advocate for that brand. I don't use it, but most individuals trust their shelter/vet recommendation.
Remember this is only her opinion. I know plenty of dogs that have eaten proplan and are happy healthy dogs. Pro plan is a great food for most dogs and affordable for many dog families
@@SarahSchneider2 She never stated that the dogs wouldn't be happy and healthy on any of the said diets. Humans can be happy and healthy eating French fries and chocolate milkshakes daily but it doesn't mean that that is an appropriate diet to sustain life.
They have millions if not billions of marketing dollars, and i used to respect them but after learning from dozens of veterinarians, scientists & formulators (watch those interviews here: th-cam.com/play/PLpZYLEY5gyrv-MpO9xOz8RmDfia9gwTjg.html&si=bHx4WHInjWILey-p) my mind completely changed
My dog has a congenital condition called microvascular dysplasia. A liver malfunction that limits his ability to filter contaminants in his bloodstream (that primarily come from protein... especially protein that has steroids and antibiotics). So, he still needs protein in his diet that comes from other sources besides meat. What's a suggestion for accomplishing that?
I would be interested in a review of fresh food brands. They are not something I would feed, however I know many who do. They look better than kibble but they still look carb laden and filled with things I avoid like wheat, legumes and potatoes. And they are usually loaded with synthetic vitamins and minerals. Raised Right is the only one that looks decent that I have found.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Rachel! My goldendoodle rejects all brands of kibbles, and only wants to eat real food. Luckily, I found a brand of food that my picky eater will eat, and I am pleased with the nutrients it's made with. " Superfood Complete" from Badlands Ranch, the company is own by Katherine Heigl.
Vet told me not to give grain free to my dog with pancreatitis. She was vomiting and completely lost appetite was losing weight quickly. In which case you should use digestive formula canned food and go to the vet get meds
Completely agree with @lady6772. I've had 2 dogs on Purina pro plan, lived to 15 and 16. I think the "stay away from Purina" has been a bit overblown. Raw food is also great but I have had nothing but good experiences with Purina pro plan.
Oh no! I thought orjien was one of the best. At least in kibbles. Can you recommend something in the same price range? Orjien is pretty expensive for us already so we can’t really go higher in price. Any ideas? We’re feeding two big dogs
@@WillowTheGreatDane I would add sardines to it. Dogs get like that as they age. There are a few other salmon dog foods that are pretty good, but we always add more protein to our dogs food. It’s a great base, but you have to be very careful with treats. Lots of dogs won’t eat things if they are eating something else.
That’s a great food! Especially for any dogs that have skin issues. Nestles has owned Purina for 20 years. They buy the salmon for their food on the commodities market. Don’t charge your dogs food. If your dog is doing well, stay with it
What do you think of canned food? Is this more nutritious because it would not be heated to such extreme temperatures and compromise the nutrition to make it shelf stable?
I feed Gypsy Carna4 and she also gets healthy food toppers .. Love how you call the good and bad about food and treats .. Sites for limited ingredient healthy snacks ..
Carna4 is great, and so happy you are feeding toppers! Could you do a segment on how you can feed 2 large golden retrievers cost efficiently. I can not afford to feed only raw or fresh food. I need to split it with a good kibble. I would love to know what your monthly pet food cost is. Watching these videos can make me feel like a horrible pet owner, but as a school teacher, almost 2,000 a mobth is just not doable😢
Love this. I experienced quite a journey in my search for the right dog food for my pups. Went from Blue to Purina to Orijen to now Carna4. LOVE cana4. Previously, my vet wanted to prescribe apoquel/cytopoint. I said no. Made the switch to Carna4 2 months ago and got a clean bill of health from my vet who stated my pup’s skin and coat looked GREAT!! Previously, tons of hot spots, infections, brittle fur to now sleazy shiny fur :)
Orijen claimed formulas didn’t change which I agree but what I notice is their “wild cough Alaskan salmon” and other items like that has been removed which tells me their ingredient quality went down
Thank you for solving my years of research, I was feeding zignature lamb and they changed recipe, they said for the better but my dogs said not good. I have 3 cane Corsos and I want to treat them best I can. I do put them first but I'm struggling with illness and can't work much. I don't think I can afford orijen right now, any suggestions please
Also if a blood result comes back in the vet tells you if their protein s are a little high should you be feeding high protein dog food especially in 9 down to 7 even 4 yr old dogs?
I recently stopped kibble altogether. I am feeding organ meat, eggs, chicken, ground beef or turkey and sweet potatoes. The dogs love it! I don't really know if I'm saving much money, probably some but I feel way better about what my dog's are eating so there's that
I feel the same way Tara. We just adopted an 11 year old, female standard poodle and I decided she would eat what we eat,of course minus the foods we know not to feed dogs. I wonder when did feeding a dog become so complicated. Before commercial dog food started to be processed around the1920’s, what did dogs eat for centuries? Good meat, vegetables from the garden , a little rice and potatoes, eggs and organ meat. It’s just me ,my husband and our lovely dog. Most of what we eat is organic, local and free range. If it’s good enough for us, It’s good enough for her. So happy to read your comment. Plain old simple common sense. Have a great day.😊
I do not see the “ links down below “ that say which foods you recommend. I go through a 40 lb bag each week, because I own a Grumble of Ten Pugs, and I have been a pug breeder for 30 years. I have been feeding them Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult - What other kibble do you recommend that is the same price as Diamond Naturals? I thought Diamond Naturals was an excellent food. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly, and educating us on these ingredient list, and marketing ploys! Thank you so much, Wanda Cobb Wanda’s Precious Pugs
My cane Corso was on Victor for years and did amazing on it. I tried several other brands of kibble & he had bad allergies and breakouts. Victor to me was the best prior to the recall We even tried raw feeding and cooking food. And he has lots of loose stool and throws up I don't know what to do😩😣🤦🏽♀️
@@Iwill_Mike smh so unfortunate our poor babies I heard Victor corrected the problem. I'm not sure if that's true, but if it is, i'm gonna go right back on it

I use Royal Canin for my 6 Giant Schnauzers and haven't been entirely thrilled. It's costing me a fortune and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a replacement. Appreciate your responses
What is the most economical kibble you recommend for a multiple-dog household? Especially when they are large breed dogs and eat a lot. With inflation, it is getting harder and harder to feed our pets without going broke.
My dogs are doing great on Victor with ultra oil mixed in with greek yogurt and fresh veggies.

I've fed Victor for a few years now. The salmon and sweet potato formula. No problems. Also the cats get the cat food. All's well. They also get other add ins. Im stickin with Victor. There's a WHOLE LOT of other crap brands I would have showed before Victor and Orijen.

I had a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix that lived for 17 years on Purina. Now I have a goldendoodle that loves Purina Pro Plan with fresh veggies such as peas, green beans, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.
I keep hearing this, but the one sold in Europe has the same ingredients as Canada. Did they change the US ingredients!

We had planned on feeding my puppy Orijen, but we switched to Open Farm as soon as I heard about the Mars acquisition. He loves his Salmon kibble with freeze dried raw toppers and bone broth. We rotate through the different proteins so he gets a little bit of everything!

why would you not reccommend these brands
I'll go with open farm mix. My dal is 10 years old, what vitamins, topper or supplements do you recommend??? @@RachelFusaro
Exactly! Well said Carna 4 is $175 for a 25lb bag and that’s the chicken.
Yep she needs to touch on this
Could not have said any better.
Once mars took over orijen my 2 dogs started developing skin allergies. I got them on pulsar.
I agree with you, I buy Orijen and it has the same ingredients. I think this is all scaremongering!
I would not use any dog food
Raw diet beef liver sardines fruit strifbeans carrots blueberry's some eggs with eggshells raw chicken wings pumpkin organ meat

Acana has the highest cases of Diet-Associated Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Dogs.
@@lisalo.lisalo Is there a list of companies that have incidence with DCM in dogs?
Try Rawz. It's an awesome dry kibble.

She says that so far the ingredients are staying the same and everything is the same so I wouldn't be throwing the baby out with the bathwater just yet on those brands.
@nogames8982 Exactly! Although she says Orijen uses feed grade meat, that is not what the mfg says. I love Diamond Naturals dry food for cats and I also use Tuna and Solid Gold dry cat food. It is hard to get Diamond Naturals now in stores. Rice is lower in gluten. Small Batch raw or freeze dried. My babies love it.
Yeah, my dog only eats dry kibble if I add canned food to it or hand feed her.
I agree and will not buy it
Any smart pet good company won't tell u their supplier... open farm is on Susan thixtons list and their suppliers all have to provide continuous verification documents for quality

Would like to see what you think of Wysong. After looking over many, seemed to be the best quality for price.
But Purina, along with Royal Canin, Hill's (worldwide), Eukanuba & IAMS (not in the UK/Europe) are five safe food brands that follow guidelines by WSAVA.
What are the recommended brands?
Orijen's ingredient lists have already changed from what they used to be. They now use synthetics to make up for the change. It used to be that they only supplemented with copper and zinc, if I recall correctly. They also used to make their meals in-house, so don't be surprised if it is now streamlined and sourced from other untraceable meal renderers. Their line that doesn't currently use meals is their Fit & Trim. Just in general, another reason why you don't want conventional grains or fillers is that these crops are often sprayed with glyphosate before harvest in order to dry it out for dictating when they can be ready for harvest.

That's not true
Is there any decent dog kibble that is not ridiculously overpriced?
I’m not disagreeing with your review but I had a question. Why do so many veterinarians recommend Purina Pro Plan? Recently my vet recommended Purina for an anal Gland infection. They recommended Salmon and sensitive skin or Fiber Balance from Purina. It’s frustrating as a dog owner to see so many disagreements on the best food to feed your dog.
Kick backs
check their M.O.
@@celticwelsh just something to consider....and be aware of "follow the money", as science is bought and paid for, for the most part

I believe the term for that 'spray' is Digestive, it makes it so the animals will eat it and become addicted to it

Yeah, me too! I'm using Diamond now, but I'm going back Victor asap
Have u made the switch?
I have a german shepherd that has to be on a low protein diet. Best under 23% she develops bladder stones that develop with a high protein diet. I regularly have to test her pH urine to make sure she is still in the "normal range". I know you don't like low protein diets, but some furbabies need it.
Thank you for putting this video together
What about for people who arent loaded? What do you recommend dry food wise that i can buy for 100 and under 40lbs or more. I have a large dog
Victor has several versions with 30%+ protein percentages & lower carbs that are marketed toward working dogs.
Victor was recalled a few weeks ago, we fed our rotties and had to switch out
Hi Rachel, what is your take on Natures logic kibble? i trust your information
Could you do a segment on how you can feed 2 large spinones cost efficiently. I can not afford to feed only raw or fresh food. I need to split it with a good kibble.
I been feeding my dog with Orijen beberé they sell out my dog used to enjoy his meal but now I have to cook a beef stock to mex with their food
I cook for my 3 dogs…with vegetables, chicken or turkey and brown rice with turmeric, black pepper and ginger which are all great for dogs. They do also have a little bit of kibble Purina Pro. Blueberries
Sardines in water, tuna also in water. Sometimes eggs..always have protein for them 🥺
Nulo Freestyle Adult Dog Food, Premium All Natural Grain-Free Dry Small Kibble Dog Food any good? i recently found your channel and would like to buy better food for my frenchie i recently bough a bag of Nulo because it was recommended to me thanks.
I'm shocked to see Proplan, as most shelters and vets that are social media present advocate for that brand. I don't use it, but most individuals trust their shelter/vet recommendation.
I suspect shelters often get donations from Purina and when someone adopts a pet, they likely just continue with it, assuming it must be good.
Pro plan is not that good bynproducts
What logical foresight you've had, considering what's going on right now with Purina suppliers.
I just switched to Acana but it now shows "pork meat meal". I wonder if this is the start of the changes
Are you willing to take a look into this Purium dog food and cat ?
I would be interested in a review of fresh food brands. They are not something I would feed, however I know many who do. They look better than kibble but they still look carb laden and filled with things I avoid like wheat, legumes and potatoes. And they are usually loaded with synthetic vitamins and minerals. Raised Right is the only one that looks decent that I have found.

@ArifulIslam-bx9wl Thanks. I make my own but some people I know are looking for fresh food brands.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Rachel! My goldendoodle rejects all brands of kibbles, and only wants to eat real food. Luckily, I found a brand of food that my picky eater will eat, and I am pleased with the nutrients it's made with. " Superfood Complete" from Badlands Ranch, the company is own by Katherine Heigl.

we feed our dogs Badland's too. They luv it. Add fresh fruits and veggies.
The question you have to ask is how does your dog do on the food? How do their poops look?
@@PortWaterDogs4Eva They’ve been eating it forever. But lately they won’t eat. They dump they’re food over and it’s so annoying and confusing
@@PortWaterDogs4Eva huh okay. We’ve added sardines before, but our poodle mix still doesn’t eat that well. She’s only about a year old
@@WillowTheGreatDane a dog will never starve itself. Don’t free feed. Put food out for 15 min then take it away. Your poodle is messing with you!
We have a Bernese that has a sensitive stomach and the only thjng we have found he can eat is Purina Salmon food. Can you recommend a food for him?
That’s a great food! Especially for any dogs that have skin issues. Nestles has owned Purina for 20 years.
They buy the salmon for their food on the commodities market. Don’t charge your dogs food. If your dog is doing well, stay with it
Stick to salmon-only foods but look for food using a high percentage of salmon.
Greetings Ms Fusaro can you please tell me which adult and puppy food do you prefer?
I make my own dog food. Ground beef, boiled broccoli, corn, peas, carrots, eggs and rice. I call it doggie fried rice
Does it cost more to do that? Do u use all organic 🤔
@@tnt62997It's cheap. I don't even feed myself organic, but if you can afford it, go for it.
@@tnt62997no. You make in large batches and put it in a Tupperware.
Dogs shall not eat raw egg white.
@@brave1671 yup. Cooked eggs grinded up. Shell included for calcium
I was in Tractor supply the other day and saw a 50 pound sack of dog food for $10.99
Wow. Bad
I had a chichuahua loved to 20 years old . Ate pedigree since day one . Never had cancer or anything . She died one night when she went to slept .
And thank you, I try to share a fair opinion on products because my intention is never to "bash a brand," rather, my goal is to share in the information so pet owners can make informed decisions. Here are my fav treats: www.rachelfusaro.com/product_category/tasty-treats/

FOOD CAN HEAL, this is another amazing testament to that! Thank you for sharing, you will surely inspire many others
@@RachelFusaro 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 thank you for all that you do!
What is your opinion on Fermina? That’s what I’m feeding now after orijen sold their company, my dogs stomach become a mess.
I go through a 40 lb bag each week, because I own a Grumble of Ten
Pugs, and I have been a pug breeder for 30 years.
Thank you so much,

Sorghum and barley are ancient grains, and excellent for canine heart health.
My cane Corso was on Victor for years and did amazing on it. I tried several other brands of kibble & he had bad allergies and breakouts. Victor to me was the best prior to the recall We even tried raw feeding and cooking food. And he has lots of loose stool and throws up I don't know what to do😩😣🤦🏽♀️
in the same boat! went to wellness complete health lamb, and his coat/skin is not doing too well. Switching soon, yet again.
@@Iwill_Mike smh so unfortunate our poor babies I heard Victor corrected the problem. I'm not sure if that's true, but if it is, i'm gonna go right back on it
okay ive been feeding my dog purina pro for a while now. what woukd you recommend as an alternative kther than raw food diet.

I use Royal Canin for my 6 Giant Schnauzers and haven't been entirely thrilled. It's costing me a fortune and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a replacement. Appreciate your responses
Hi if you are in Australia and buy Royal Canin from our local pet shops. I strongly suggest changing to Eureka and check out Wolfit box.
Where do you get chicken hearts and livers?
