edit 7/7/2023: I already realize they have a free plan, unfortunately it still sucks because the low poly models you get from it are virtually useless.
Also I am blatantly aware that Adobe doesn't own shapr3d but 108+ people that liked the comment got the joke, I'm sorry you did not.
Mannn, I miss the days of just outright owning software. :/ This is my #1 dislike about Shapr3D.

Subscription software is nothing more than extorting more money out of people for the same or less updates, I welcome you to compile a list of updates on Adobe before and after subscription fees. You will see they do the same amount of work essentially but make way more $$$ in the process. Subscription software firmly beats up the little guy-hobbyists and thickens the Enterprise wallets more than ever before.
@@kenny6614 after windows Adobe photoshop was the biggest pirated software so not really opinion. And a hobbies can use coral draw or any of the hundreds of hobby software. Pro brands have a pro client base and much like a builder needs tools hw has to pay, won't go far with a £3 spanner set

That was a joy to watch! When you look on the Facebook groups a lot of people love printing but tend to stick to downloaded decorational models and confess to not knowing where to start with designing functional 3d prints. This video was a great example of how easy it can be to quickly produce a simple functional design and isn't as scary as often thought! Great job!! :D
Even if 3D printers become cheap enough AND reliable enough to be considered like basic appliances where you don’t need to futz with them and fix them yourself, I believe even with the most user-friendly 3D modeling software, it’s just too involved and intimidating for most people to start. This is why I remain unconvinced 3D printers will be in more than a tiny fraction of homes in the next 20 years, unless there is suddenly such a major shift in both technology and mass manufacturing that things that aren’t 3D-printed aren’t available unless you pay a crazy amount.
I loved the (free) program and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The program is solid and a joy to work with on the iPad with the pencil. I doodled and created a replacement for my rock band battery cover that broke. Worked perfectly and it was my first ever experience “modeling.”
I Wish they’d simply charge a one time fee though. 50 bucks. Amazing. $100, sure. Even $200…I’m in. I’d pay for easily…one time…but the monthly is just too much. Just one more thing. They’re alienating normal folks like me from buying but who don’t use it every day.

Super great job, Jessy! So humble of you to admit that your not good at 3D modeling but this video shows that you are! Ok, the iPad sculpting to make the fridgepart was kinda cringy (being a 3D artist myself) but what a huge difference now!
Great improvement, taking measurements and doing it the more proper/easy way using CAD-modeling. Keep up the learning! 🤘🏻

Uncle Jessy! I'm right there with you on Shapr3D! Picked it up because I know I need to eventually get comfortable with CAD / solid body modeling, and found it to be a pleasure to use!
(Now... getting more organic shapes is not the easiest, but still very much possible.)

I too have had difficulty with more organic shapes but with trial and error i've gotten better!
I've enjoyed Tinkercad, it's free, and very basic but works fine for the stuff I need it for. Created some feet for my snare drum, rope tension drum, like Civil War stuff you might see at your favorite local olde timey museum (Genesee country village is our local favorite). Used a micrometer, similar process to the one used here, and saved as STL, sliced with the Anycubic slicer, and printed on resin printer with some of that stronger resin mixed with normal black resin. Worked great. Also, made a fife using the same method, but the 3d printer we have can't print tall enough, so had to make it three pieces and engineer a joint with a little built-in clip which worked great in Tinkercad, ditto a clamp for the interior of a shop light that had to way to anchor the electric wires and a bunch of other one-off random stuff. BUT I can see that if I needed anything more complex, it would get sloppy and harder and harder as complexity increases with Tinkercad.
You said you aren't very good but honestly you did a great job explaining while you were doing it. That speaks alot to the ease of Shapr and your ability to comprehend instructions.

I just wish they had like a “kinda pro” option for those of us that just want tools for modeling functional parts for 3D printing. Their Pro pricing is so darn expensive.

I do like how you split the screen to see how you are working the tablet, very useful idea. Overall, very good video, specially showing the exporting part at the end. Well done.
For parts that don't work well on the first go and aren't mission critical to be the exact dimensions, I like to use a hair dryer to shape them if possible so that I don't have to remodel and reprint and scrap the parts. For example, applying some heat to that groove and pushing in a little on the side can help add a bit more friction.
I started using this a month ago after running into an ad on Facebook. Its been great for quickly drafting projects or products for clients.
It's a fantastic app (the full version).
It's just a real pity it's only available via subscription.
If you're a professional, then you might not mind paying 200+ USD a year, but as a home user, dipping in occasionally to design and print something off at home, that's a lot of cheese!
I'm sure they're losing out on a load of potential (none professional) customers, who'd be prepared to pay a one off fee.
After playing around with it, I'd happily pay 80USD.
I'll pay a subscription for something I use every month, like Netflix or Apple Music, not this.
And Netflix and apple music don't cost 30 a month together either. $200/year is a bit much for a hobbyist
Fusion is free and more powerful no real professionals are going to be using this beyond joe blow small business

I'm probably too used to my Solidworks modeling pipeline, but it's good to see more and more actually ergonomic tools stepping on professional cad's tail, for the sake of competition and solving stagnation of the existing, "market leading" CAD tools.
I also still suck at resin printing xD, but I'm slowly getting to know it with my Saturn S setup.
I love shapr 3D. I got my job to use it and also teach a basic class. Thanks for this vid. You Rock!

@@UncleJessy A work around would be a server based slicer that you access through the browseron the ipad
Put a thin rubber sticker on the underside of that section that the tube goes in as that will help with grip.

love the software but I couldn't justify the price point. I wasn't designing as much as I thought I was going to and actually paid a month or two without even designing anything. It's worth the money if you're a pretty serious designer.

Yep can’t justify paying for something that I use infrequently. If there was a one off small price for private users then I’d buy it. On the other hand went for another program that is free, without ads, and fully functioning without time limits……..Design Spark Mechanical (DSM)…….great tutorials, quick learning.
If you’re only using it for 3d printing, you can, possibly the most powerful 3d modeling software out there, for free in a student license. It’s made by Siemens and called NX. We use it aerospace, and a lot of automotive and power gen companies use it as well.
It’s sad they don’t have an “enthusiast” subscription that allows a limited number of models and hi-res STL export. Maybe when they’ve added more pro features it will give them scope to separate the subs levels and offer a cheaper point of entry. I never renewed after my first year deal ran out, switched to fusion360 on my Mac as it just didn’t make sense to pay for something you use a handful of times a year.
Fusion is just as easy and it's free

To be honest , as a kinda experienced CAD user(autocad, solidworks,inventor), I was excited to check out sharp3d when I got my iPad compatible with Apple Pencil. But I was really confused on how to use the program and I think my desktop apps are actually more efficient for me. Once you get used to drawing with mouse and keyboard, it feels kinda absurd to actually draw with pencil, especially on that glossy screen. Additionally, your power is very limited when dealing specific curves such as aerofoils and so on, so to me, it wasn’t the best choice.

Tinkercad is my free goto for almost every simple functional print... I've made some pretty complex models with it as well, but it's so simple to use 😅
Yea. I feel this. I’ve been pretty surprised how much I was able to get out of tinkercad. But I’ve definitely been running into the upper limits of what it can do. Especially when it comes to object complexity. Was really hoping there’s be a good cheaper alternative that’s actually as intuitive as Tcad

Nice! I had to make a spool holder for my weed trimmer and used TinkerCAD. I might need to get a pen for my iPad and play around when I have down time at work.
I’m been using Shapr3D since Dec 2020. I know it’s expensive for home users, but for me it’s worth it. I love being able to design on my iPad. It’s not perfect, and it’s evolving, but overall I’ve been extremely happy with it.
I'd be real interested to see you print some with PETG. I've had a heck of a time with my Neptune 2 trying to get things to come out right.
3d printing really becomes amazing when combined with 3d modelling for situations such as Jesse ran into here.
I dont understand the pricing for though. No beginner is going to pay that much a month, and any pro is very likely using blender, or fusion etc.
Use the low res free version if you are a beginner, upgrade when you are ready to sell your bits
Shapr3D has been great for me... the fact that I can use it on my iPad anywhere means that i can allocate a lot more time to making things. It's a lot more accessible than having to go to a desktop computer or carry around a laptop. At least that's how it is for me.

Not being able to slice is the only hickup in my workflow. I can sketch, design and send a print via octoprint all on the iPad. Great vid!
Great vid as always. Shapr3d looks like a nice program, but like you said, it ain't cheap. I think it is a bit expensive for the normal hobbyist though.

I get that the price is turning a lot of ppl off, but especially for students that still have a year or two to go about, seems like a good thing to mess around with. Especially if youre like me and got a 2 in 1 laptop for uni [windows laptop/tablet hybrid thingy with a pen].
Shapr3D is so good and intuitive. Also have good education free access 👍👍👍

My most used app, or should I say more or less the only used app on my iPad. They developing really fast and add useful features along the road.
There is still missing a lot but they are on a good way and it’s insane what you can do with it if used correctly.

I work with Fusion 360, Maya and other VR stuff... but this looks so ridiculously easy. I'm going to try it!

AstroPrint is a web-based slicer that piggybacks on cura. I personally use it on my Android, iPhone or Chromebook.
Great example of entry 3d modeling. im a novice as well but i use the Free version of Fusion 360.
I love the Shapr3d, just that they make it as a (quite expenive) subscripton app, really irritates me. And that I can't export in proper quality because of that.
Hi Greg, we hear you, but unfortunately we haven't figured out it yet how we could go even lower with the price. Shapr3D already provides fantastic value for the price, and while we understand that the price does not fit for your needs, it would be very tricky for us to go even lower.

@@Shapr3d I think if you make it free for hobbyists it'll give your software more exposure. There's a reason why everyone knows what Blender is. It's basically advertising. If any hobbyists go pro then they'll be loyal experienced customers. Even if high quality models were limited to about 5 a month that would be good.

Which is not help me at all (for I am not a student, and I am pretty sure that is true for some other hobbyist people too, who would like to use it), and the problem with the subsctiption business modell for a software is still there even if it is free for students.

This program made on Siemens “Parasolid” core, like many other including Onshape, Desingspark mechanical, Siemens NX an etc. Seriously, doesn’t matter, which program you use, if you can use the full potential of this program.

I worked as a 3D CAD technician for a couple of years. I use Solidworks to make my models. Will have to give Shapr a shot! Looks great for touch interface which Solidworks is... let's just say- Not so great at.
Print-To-3D. Really nicely featured slicer for iPad. Just an FYI.
I've been using that software for about 2 weeks. It's nice. PC has its issues with seeing everything but it's a good program. I think the price is a bit too much. I would get it if it wasn't so pricey as I don't use it a whole lot.
Finally, a demo showing how to use 3D CAD and 3D printing to solve an actual problem ! And it didn't work the first time so we know it's real 🙂

Onshape is also supposed to be IPad compatible. I’ve used it on PC pretty successfully.

Question about the Elegoo Neptune 2 (either original or 2S)- Can it print PETG and flexibles? I want to print practacle prints as well that my resin printer would be a bad choice for.
If you are a teacher or student you can get a free educational license for the full app. It just needs to be renewed every year. I have this for my iPad. I use fusion 360 on my desktop and shaper when I'm on the go.
I use this software also and it is expensive and super easy to use. Way better then learning fusion 360. How I combat the price point is I have a list of things to make on my iPad. Once I get the list to 10 items or have something I need sooner rather then later and I’ll pay for a month and then through that month I go ahead and model all of my saved items. Then cancel at the end of the month and start my list over. This keeps me from over spending and making 3D printing not worth it.
For those who dont own a 3D printer... @0:40 His 'problem' could of been solved with JB weld.
Its a puddy that hardens to the same strength as steel. I fixed a platic wheel on my Grocery Trolly Cart with it, and now its tronger then it was brand new.
The fact that you even tried to use super glue on a part that holds all the pressure is rookie behaviour.

My career was a Machinist and the layout is very simular from the design but not converting to machine code language like in CNC!
Fish have fillets (fill-a's) shapes have fillets (fill-ets)
Actually it’s fish “filet” with one L. “Fillet” with 2 L’s is the CAD term.
I always use fusion but I’ll have to check out shapr. I could finally justify my Apple Pencil ✏️ purchase.

When and if is Elegoo going to make a printer with a larger bed. Like 300x300x400? I have a Neptune 2s, love it, but needed a larger bed so I bought a Longer LK5 Pro. I would have preferred to stay with Elegoo but they don't make a non-resin printer with that large of a build volume. Put a bug in their ear.

Thanks for a great intro to this software, but given their free and paid options, might as well spent the time learning Fusion 360 and get everything including the kitchen sink. Real work is done on a laptop/desktop anyways.

You should have taken the chance to improve the design reinforcing the weak points of the original piece. For example, the 90° corner between the circular base and the outer side of the tube could be improved with a large bezel so there is no corner that can break but a thick volume.
