    I am 82, have played over 60 years, have a 16-17 handicap from tees ranging from 6100-6400. I play forged blades with traditional lofts. Driver is a Callaway Epic GBB Sub Zero 10.5 loft with Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ R1 shaft 54 grams. I carry 195 to 205, so get total ranging from 210 to 225 with an occasional 230-235 if the fairways are firm. Totally agree with your advice about 7 woods. Given the impact of age on swing speed and length, and seeing that pros like Dustin Johnson carry both 7 and 9 woods that they use instead of long irons to get more height and greater angle of descent so the ball will stop on long approaches, last year I bought a 21 degree Callaway Epic Max 7 wood and this year added a Callaway Paradym 24 degree 9 wood. They have replaced my 3 and 4 irons and even made the 5 iron optional. I also have an Epic Max 5 wood and 3 wood, and often find it better to use the 5 rather than the 3. I also changed my iron shafts from 120 gram stiff flex Royal Precision Rifle Lite to 87.5 gram Nippon NS Pro Zelos 8 stiff steel shafts. The good thing about golf is you can keep learning to improve all your life. I have been working a lot on my iron swing this year using excellent TH-cam videos from a half dozen really good coaches and the practice bays at my local PGA Superstore with Foresight GC Hawk launch monitors so I can see actual data for each club. One of the hardest things for me to learn and execute properly has been getting my weight on to my left leg before completing the backswing so that I can rotate and contact the ball with shaft lean. I have had considerable success with my irons. However, I now seem to be having some trouble with my 7 and 9 woods and getting them into the high trajectories they should reach. So I wonder if there is a difference between the correct swing and weight shift for say a 7 iron and the swing and weight shift for a fairway wood. That brought me to your video. You seem to shift your weight on to your left leg in about the same way as you would with an iron. but there may be things I am missing. Other than where the ball is placed at address in relation to your left foot, are there other differences in the swing?

    I have more luck hitting the ball set up in the middle spot between my legs....like hitting irons. I will give your technique a try, however. I went with ball in the middle for the obvious reason of not wanting to hit ground behind the ball.

    • @riley9577
      @riley9577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@J_pearce01 been doing that alot recently especially on chips sensational tip . phill mickelson says never chip out the middle of your stance all your weight on your left foot or as much as you can and play it off front foot for height and less roll or back foot for less height more roll out .. For full wedge shots or iron shots if you can feel as if your whacking downwards on it you'll hit the best shots of your life . few of my begginer friends try and hit the ball upwards which results in blading it with the bottom of the club 90% of the time

    Hi Pete
    I have adopted this technique from your previous videos and I must say that as long as I concentrate on keeping a solid swing and not rock back, as you said,, I am smacking my 5 wood 200 yards, not bad for 20 handicap. My own advice with fairway woods would be start with the highest lofted one in your bag and get confident with the technique then move up the clubs. It worked for me. Another well defined short video, I love this series keep it up mate 😍

    Are some woods more suited to being hit of the ground rather than the tee regarding face shape,etc? Is there space for a 7 wood below a 3 iron in the bag?

    • @allanthomson8969
      @allanthomson8969 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A deeper face, ie taller from the bottom of the face to the top, will be better off the tee. Shallower faces are easier to hit from the ground but easy to sky off a tee.

    Hi Pete, loved the video! I’ve been really struggling to hit my fairway woods of the deck recently so I’m keen to go try this out.
    I would love more set up videos! I’m usually quite a big hitter with my driver, but have recently found some issues with the consistency of my set up (grip, stance, ball position, takeaway etc.). Love what you’re doing with the swing quest channel, keep it up!

    • @sitaylor
      @sitaylor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well they are different lofts so you should. A 1 iron is the equivalent to a 3 wood. A 4 iron is actually a 9 wood in most sets.

    With the increasing popularity of 5 woods and 7 woods, I'm unsure where my hybrid now fits in. Why or when would you use a 4 hybrid (22 degree) vs a 3 or 5 wood if you could get those in a similar loft?

    • @michaelbateson8636
      @michaelbateson8636 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm starting with a gapping session soon as I've bought a new driver, and irons 5-gw. There is quite a bit of yardage to fill between driver 245-265 and 5 iron 170-185. 21 degree hybrid would fill 200-210 the maybe a 17 degree wood for 220-235.

    • @Bergerac82
      @Bergerac82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For most golfers a hybrid is more versatile in shot shape and more playable from a variety of lies.
      I can play a 21 degree hybrid from a fairway bunker, but there’s no way I’d be hitting a fairway wood with the same confidence.
      Actual bag is 3i and then 3w, but that’s just preference.

    Could i ask why better players, especially tour players seen to hit fairways woods with a divot, not lawn size but there is definitely a slight decent in strike. Is that something us mere mid handicappers (14) need to consider or get the basics done first? I've had a 7 wood for well over 15 years in one form or another. Brilliant clubs.

    Hi Peter! I have a question. Well 2 actually. 1st one is is the swing different? Because my swing it like an iron, always dig into the ground and it goes like 20 feet. The second question is how do I stop the slice? I don’t slice any of my clubs but if I do connect with the ball on a Threewood, it’s going right every time

    Also wondered about a ‘top 5 things to know when you’re on the golf course’ - pitch marks, how to mark your ball, what rules are for hazards etc. Appreciate this could be a little dry but done in the right way, I think it could be really useful for beginner golfers like myself who haven’t got experienced guys on course with them to learn these things from!
