Me too! I've had mine out for about a month. The tracker was tracking early. Last year my first male was on April 28th. Today was a female.

I took your advice and removed plants from my containers . I did exactly what you said not to do. Filled them with 6 plants. So now 1 plant with containers all around. Thank you for helping us beginners ❤
We'll be having our 1st 70s temps this week, possibly even 80F...still going to be too chilled at night though till June. I'm hoping all my tomato seedlings will get bigger with these warmer temps. They've stayed alive, but just like the dogs & I...they want to bask outdoors. I only planted 1 zucchini inside about 5 wks. ago. It's about the size its Mum was last season when I purchased her. I chanced growing it way too early, but anyone that gardens knows...it's how we learn what works. The only tomato seeds that aren't doing well for me are those I saved from my very productive Early Girl. It sucks because I'd planned to give them away to our local food pantry so they could hand them out to struggling families. The Mum plant did so well last season that I gave away much of the harvest to our pantry. Supporting our town's pantry is very important to me. I'm hoping some volunteers will take advantage of my offer for garden space in exchange for helping me keep the garden going on my most agonizing days. This is the 1st town I've lived in whose food pantry doesn't have property for a community garden. I don't have a lot of $, but I have a very sunny backyard full of earthworms. I don't know what you do with your extra seedlings, so if your area has a community garden...perhaps your local pantry would be grateful in receiving them. Take care, ~ Covah

After you fertilize the females eat the male flowers : make a batter of flour, salt , water & egg mix together ; add a stick of mozzarella inside male flower after pulling out the stamen stuff - shallow fry til golden brown - a real treat!😊

Without deer fencing, I think you will have problems. I have a garden at the edge of a thick forest, plenty of deer. We will be putting up deer fencing soon, but in the meantime I use pinwheels. You can buy these from the Dollar Tree centers and have placed them in my tubs.
This is a temporary fix, but it does seem to work. Have not had any deer problems since we put them up so far at least. I use large ones and the shiny ones placed among the plants where they can catch even the slightest of breezes. Flags work as well.

I've been cleaning up my garden area and found a tomato plant from last year! I'm in 7b. It's been in the 20's at night and down in the teens this winter. It was in a grow bag half full of soil and compost. I'll be using more bags this fall.
My mom lives in 6b. The tomatoes are coming up every year for her these past couple of years! Pretty cool! But she's a Virgo and not having garden rows works on her nerves 🤣🤷♀️

Thought of you this evening when I took my carrot scraps from dinner and coffee grounds out back to one of my beds. Tossed them out..looked at a potted fig that I plan on planting in that spot and put the pot on the scraps! 😆 Been learning from you for around 5 years now, thanks so much!
I grow a lot of papayas, just cover the top of cut with a can or bucket without holes; new shoots will sprout on trunk….

I love the rose scented geranium and have gradually been integrating veggies plantings with perennial flowers and herbs. I am not sure but it seems to me that this mixing of strong smelling herbs & flowers with veggie crops discourages (confuses) pests (like cabbage moth) or other problem bugs. That is the theory any way and I do have fewer problems.
Hey Robbie, I know you know what yer doing, but bcuz it's staying cold, couldn't you drape the rolls of clear plastic over the tubing to make like a greenhouse? Used to be $7 for a 25ft roll at Walmart but now like $20 a roll I think. Husky brand. I'm not talking covering all of your entire massive garden areas, just certain plants you want to protect from the wet and cold.
Just a heads up... Don't let plastic come in contact with plants if threat of frost is expected. It might actually cause the plant to freeze. You can drape plastic over newspaper or sheets as long as it doesn't touch.

I live in an Australian small town Robbie and my Father in law was a small child in early 1900s. He said that when he was a child the farmers always planted the tomatoes and let them run along the ground. So guess that’s how they grew them back then I don’t know if they put hay under them or not.

I am probably going to have to go back and see how you do this, but the way you layer pots in totes is mind blowing. I am definitely wondering how you water everything, and how long it takes you to do it.

I have noticed that there are couple things you don't seem to be growing that I thought would do well in your area.. petunias. I can't seem to get them to germinate - yet and they were one of my mom's favorite. A couple of roots, jicama and celeriac... summer and winter maybe? and roses.

I think a raccoon came by last night and tried to get into my 2 'compost in place' pitchers!! It's a tall, skinny rectangular one with a flip lid. Both the lids were up, but not off! Maybe my container was deep enough the little bugger couldn't reach the bottom! I placed them in a galvanized trough that is about 30 inches high. It's an old livestock watering trough. Oh God please! NO raccoons! The bug pests are enough.

I grew some potatoes in a cardboard box, last year. The bottom rotted out, as expected, but a gopher dug up from underneath, and ate the potatoes. 😄 Haha
@snowbirdgardener6 put a piece of screen or cheap chicken wire on the bottom of your box before filling it. I like screen because you can cut it with scissors ✂️ rather than wire cutters
Lay some hardware under your box next time to help prevent the gopher from snatching your potatoes

Good afternoon Robbie, I have been busy transplanting my zinnia sprouts here in Yacolt Washington ,we had a couple of 70 plus degrees, Now back in the 50's for the next couple of weeks, ugh
I saw my first hummingbird today! It's finally time, everyone!! Weird though, normally I see a male ruby throat first. This year, a female was first. Although it's been chilly, I haven't been watching my feeders like a hawk. I also spotted a rose breasted grosbeak. That's a first at my feeders. Woohooo!

Thanks for your videos & tips. I'm in zone 8 Washington state. For the first time I've started lettuce & kale. I've rewatched some of your seed-starting tip videos to help me.
I've also started a chayote squash inside & now the temps are just about right to move it outside, set up more supports for it & hope it will produce the fruit in a couple of months. Do you or Gary have any experience with growing chayote or various ways to eat/prepare it? I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

Keto people use it alot to mimic apples. You peel it, cube it. Boil it (can use 2-3 apple tea bags in the water) until tender. Then use similar to apples for pie filling, etc.
I keep buying them + forgetting I have them. I may try to grow them as well. I'm in West Tx. It is very dry here. I'll have to stay on top of watering everything I plant. Good luck!

I love how creative you are with your garden! It's amazing too how some of these plants you forgot about are still thriving. I live in Georgia and have only spots of sun in my front and back yards because of the trees, so I don't know if mine will do as well. I have some Rosemary that has been drying up despite my watering it well, so I'm not sure what's wrong. My Basil is doing well in the same bed.

@@arthuurwong49 Take 6 cups peeled and grated zucchini and cook on a low boil for 15 minutes. Then add 6 cups of sugar, 1 medium can crushed pineapple and 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Boil for an additional 15 minutes and then can it like jelly. Oh so yummy!

All I know is they called it Romaine Lettuce, planted once and now the seeds regrow all year. I grow them different as the season changes, sun or shade
Be careful of the plastic chair. The legs will give way 1st. With the sunny, rain, snow, strong wind it wears out real fast. For short term use but stackable, lightweight, trash bag holder & barricade.

You can eat the male zucchini flowers after you take the pollen off - remove the flowers, remove & wash the flowers, remove the stamens, fill with a strip of mozzarella cheese, twist flower closed, make a thick batter with an egg, salt & pepper flour - dip flour & shallow fry in 1/2 “ oil yum- cheesy edible flower😊

I have never been a big squash lover & particularly not zucchini. What in the world do you do with the amount of zucchini you grow & how do you prepare it so it is pleasant to eat? I love all of your videos & have learned so much about your method of planting. I used to live in So. California and just about anything grows. I miss the night blooming Jasmine. It won’t grow here in So. Arkansas, it’s zone 8. 😢😢😢

Some cucumbers have both male and female flowers, some cucumbers have only female flowers. Tomatoes have male and female parts in the same flower. If you grow indoors, you must manually pollinate by tapping the tomato flowers gently and using a tiny brush to take pollen from male cucumber flowers to female cucumber flowers. If you happen to have a cucumber that only has female flowers, you need another cucumber plant that has both so that they can cross pollinate.

Robbie, I'm just one person and eat 1x day. With ALL the food you and Gary grow you've got to have so much extra, that is likely to happen to me! Do you donate to the food bank, give to neighbors, or just compost it? I'm not sure if food banks will accept fresh produce from a home grower.
