Second time I’ve left a comment. Don’t care about the purists with regard to the track or the dancing ability. For me this is an OUTSTANDING piece of video history depicting young people dancing with enthusiasm and skill. They did not have the technology that exists today to deliberate on there performance etc. What comes across is the sheer enjoyment of having fun dancing to music they could express themselves too.

You had some great moves! I love the guys spinning. It dazzles me that many of these wonderful soul songs were popular in Northern England but weren't hits in the US--at least not in Southern California where I lived. Years later, I 'd find out that some of my favorite soul songs that were flops in the US were cherished by kids in England. I should have been there! KTF.

What I loved about Northern Soul is that young lads danced their socks off.
Each dancer had a blast.

I visited Wigan Casino a few times just to watch these wonderful young people dance to what would become my favourite Northern Soul song. Time of my life. Also went to The Golden Torch in Stoke and The Place - anyone remember them? Kudos to any Northern Soul clubs and fans who are ‘keeping the faith’ all these years later.

We were all so skinny - full of energy - legs kicking all over the place - only had to stop for water now and then. Yes this track wasnt soulful but the film of the dancers is brilliant - great piece of history. Wish I had half the energy I had then. Wouldn't change it for the world. KTF !!

I was a 12 year old at Deansfield high school , wolves . when this was shown and it sent us into a northern soul frenzy , the influence of Gethro , Jacko and some of the older kids still at school who were into northern had a massive influence on me and my mates . first went to wigan as a 15 year old and kept going to the end . Still have a dance now on the scooter rallies . Total respect to these guys , certainly started it for me
Gethro Jacko and Steve I remember at the Wulfrun Hall Wolverhampton..1976 giving it some welly to luther ingram..
But I also remember playing Deansfield (1968) in the semi final cricket match (we was Danesfield) I was 10 years old...anyway KTF and let's have some Tomangoes..😊
I was into northern soul from the early 70's and I still am, living in stoke on trent, had to be 😊 this is how we danced, practiced all week, danced all weekend, an amazing time in my life, so thankful I was there..KTF
I remember this on top of the pops in 1975 .It was played at discos at that time .good times.
I remember it well. My brother Meryyn Brimble used to go to Wigan casino every weekend. I remember him packing his little hold-all. Ironing his shirts and Baggy trousers. He lived for the weekend. Tragically he was killed at work on a farm by a tractor in Bisthorpe Nottingham in the late 70’s.
At our local youth club we was the only two in the floor dancing when Northern soul came on, I watched Merv and tried hard, he was the best dancer ever.
Him and Gary his mate in heaven now. Rest in peace. Keep The Faith !! 🙏♥️
He was almost 18 when he died.

It wasn't just about navel gazing and rare soul then. It was about the beat and the laughs and the girls and the dancing and friendships for life and it was so special. Our amazing scene. A young persons dancing scene. I danced many times to this, and still feel blessed to have gone to the Casino so many times, who cares what it was, yes it wasn't soul but for a while it was a Northern Soul dancer and it was an amazing time. We went to the Mecca , the Locarno, Yate etc too. Yate was the friendliest of them all but nowhere could beat the buzz of the Casino. The alternative now? flash mobs from old people in shopping centres and NS dance lessons.No thanks! And yeah I'm still dancing, just not quite as fast or as often!
ps Gethro's book is one of the best, most honest books about the scene too.

This was northern dancing as I remember, probably a few more acrobatics ( because it was televised) than at the Casino, very few of the other clips on here come close.

We used to stay the weekend with my aunt in Winsford in the 60s and 70s, my cousin, she was a few years older than me said lets go to a dance in Stoke, this was about Whit bank holiday 1972, so she took me to a club, it was the Torch somewhere in Stoke where they played this soul music to dance to. At this time (i was 15) i was a boot boy and loved reggae, I fell in love with this soiul music (I fancied my cousin too) I didn't dance as was too shy, but the music stayed with me
Malcolm Coghill......The club you are referring to was originally called the 'Golden Torch Ballroom' but was better known as the 'Torch' on the Northern scene. It was located on Hose Street in Tunstall [one of the 'Five Towns' of Stoke] and I was privileged enough to attend it. In fact, I was even there on the night it closed down due to fire in March 1973.
The Torch was initially established as a Mod club by its owner Chris Burton before it began hosting all-nighters - sadly it didn't really survive too long after it became a NS club as it was constantly being raided by the local police for overcrowding and drugs.
But whilst it was open, it was in my opinion the best NS all-nighter I ever went to! The crowd were already 'veterans' of the Soul Scene and the atmosphere was electric! I have never ever felt anything like it before or since!
And the dancing was spectacular! [some of the dancers were more like acrobats and were actually back-flipping off the balconies!] You simply had to experience it yourself to truly appreciate just how incredible it was.
I had first heard about it in early 1972 from a DJ who was always playing 'Tunstall Tunes' at our local Labour Club! [this was before Dave Godin famously named the music as 'Northern Soul' and we just called it 'Uptempo soul' before that. The Torch had some of the best DJ's at the time - Colin Curtis, Keith Minshull, Tony Jebson, Alan day, Ian Levine etc]
Although I never got to go to the Torch as much as I would have liked [I was only 16 at the time so it was difficult to travel all that way at my age] the Torch will always be a really special place to me - and some of the 'Tunstall Tunes' [Lenis Guess, Dalton Bros, Johnny Wyatt, Lou Johnson, Bobby Wells, Herb Ward, Bob & Earl etc] are still amongst my all-time favourites!

I was at the first " All - Dayer " at the Winter Gardens, Cleethorpes ! I was always into Soul and Reggae but this kicked off the All - Nighters at the Gardens and then the Pier. 65 now, still love the vibes. Keep the Faith ! Great memories..

This was not the only track that wasn’t strictly soul music, but was still a big hit for Northern Soul fans on the dance floor in the 70s. The Hawaii Five-O theme was also very popular.

As I remember, this song was a bit of a Northern Soul anthem at the time. I was around 15 then, living in Hertfordshire, I wasn’t particularly into it, I was always more into rock music but I had classmates (one in particular) whose lives seemed to revolve around it. Wearing the clothes, collecting the records and above all making the weekend pilgrimage usually up north, usually to Wigan Casino. I remember he got some stick for splitting his trousers while dancing one. But he sure could dance. He was a clever kid who was doing well at school until that point. when he seemed to turn his back on it all and lose himself in all of this. So I guess he never made it to university or fulfilled others expectations. I came across him recently, it turns out he became an international DJ and producer and has done very well. Passion does shine through in the end.
At least they put a decent song on the B side. Still had me transfixed when I saw this on TOTP back in the 70’s though.

I went all the way to Stoke from Widnes on the back of a Lambretta ld125 and they wouldn't let me in because I looked too young.
Spent the night in a bus stop until my mate came out at god knows o'clock, (thoughtless******). You did well to get into the Casino at 15 yo ..believe me. Great days, still love it . Ktf

Thanks for uploading this clip. I remember learning how to do northern soul dancing by watching it. When my request for Footsee was played at the local disco, I'd be the only one dancing to it. I never dreamed then , that I would do the Footsee dance at my 60th birthday party.

Fantastic dancing old school!!! these dancers had soul you cannot manufacture this youngsters May try to imitate but they will never know that feeling we had back in the day when you walked in to a soul do and heard those great sounds how you felt when you walked in through the doors and felt at home omg what a feeling you can tell the who the old soulies are ! It’s in their blood the moves you can just tell no fabrication ! Just pure soul in the soul nothing ! no one ! can imitate

I loved the clip when I first saw it. Was a Casino regular from nearly the beginning till it went down the pan around 78. Some very arrogant, rude people posting such awfull things about the clip. We were young, full of energy and just because we we were not old enough to go to the Wheel or Torch them who were think they are better than anyone else. What an odd scene the Northern Scene was and still is!

Just as you have your opinion that the Casino went down the pan post 78 you must let others have their opinions too. There was some amazing soulful tunes (And DJs) at WC post 78. And you must remember that this time at Wigan was very emotional and cause heated arguments on the scene. It tore the scene apart with it causing alot of truly soulful peeps to leave it completely. DJs also. What I will say about the song tho is that even tho Russ put this on everyones playlist and it was played umpteen times a night it still fulled the floor and emptied M's and they all trotted back as soon as it finished lol A strange site to behold.

It came at just the right moment to inspire me to find out more about the scene, the dancing, the music. Looking back ok you can slag off the tune, but along the lines of what Charlie Taylor says, it led on to so much more. For me a lifelong interest in the many and varied sides of soul music and the interest of records.

Stuff the critics, Jethro. Without this I'd never have heard of The Salvadors, The Millionaires, Gene Toones etc. This made me curious, made me search into what was going on. The day trippers disappeared as soon as they appeared, but it garnered an interest for many of us. I love seeing this. It reminds me of how I got into Northern Soul.
Stuff those who say "not like in our day" or "Shit dancing" etc. Who put them in charge of how things should be?

So this is what I missed growing up in America. I was born in Wigan, but left at 9 yrs in 1960. I was back in 68, 72, 81, 84, 92 and 2000 and never knew about this. How fun! Bern

Great video. But what it doesn’t show is...us girls in our homemade, high waisted long skirts, dancing in platform shoes. I’ve still the damaged ankles to prove it. Long Live the Northern Soul nights in the Drill Hall, Lincoln, U.K. ( They may be a bit too posh to acknowledge those times now!)

I went to Wigan casino many times from 75 onwards. Best time of my life. Many people don’t get what northern soul was about. All northern soul videos on TH-cam showing how to dance to the soul music are the best.
when you hear the live version from wigan with everyone clapping sounds loads better,the dancers was self taught in front of the bedroom mirror the only way to hear your favorite toons was by going to the nighters and if lucky you got a tape to share with all your mates ,lol thanksfor the memory Vee

My gateway was Motown at the age of 12 in 1975 ,, Temptations first greatest hits album, then I had the bug for more Motown, I was addicted for a couple if years, then when I started going to my local youth club one of my mates who was couple of years older than me was going to Wigan at the time , he would bring some in his northern records and spin then on the youth club record player , I fell in love with these records immediately ..

Made my debut at the casino in spring 1979 aged 16 , first record I dance to at the casino was the velvet stains, nightmare of a tempo for my first outing on the legendary dancefloor lol...
I may have missed the halcyon days of the casino , but those last 2 years of the casino when I attended were the best 2 years of my clubbing life ,
Still getting out and dancing at the age of 57 .. if I take my last breath on a dancefloor I'll die happy!!
But nothing compare to the big house , even though they did spin some crap at times lol .
Remember this .. got into the 'scene' a few years later .. Wales & Cheshire Soul Club my first event at The Carousel probs .. local do's prior .. 13yrs. old then 14 yrs. old at Wigan 1st time round ... don't have an issue with anything which makes people dance and have great time. :-)

This brings back memories! Was never really into it myself, it was always rock music and motorbikes for me, but I remember a lot of the kids doing this back in ‘75-,76 and particularly one buy who split his trousers on the dance floor. Some of those dance moves were pretty cool. Northern Soul was a strange phenomenon, a weird mix of dance-oriented Motown/R&B and a Northern working class image, focused purely on the dancing and fuelled by soft drinks and ice pops, and pills as I later learned. At a time when for most of us, a night out was synonymous with going out on “the pull” whilst discovering the joys of alcohol., this new obsession seemed rather strange back in the day.
The original Northern Soul dancers of the time were absolutely brilliant. Fantastic moves that I personally could never master or even get close to.

Always wanted to see this-the TOTP appearance seems to have caused a micro-sensation at the time, and when I first came to the UK in the late 70s, folks were still talking about it, notwithstanding the actual song
First days of Wigan this was a full on blocked out your mind, verballing, heap of steaming atmosphere, if you don’t understand you weren’t there.its nothing to do with soul music but a lot of northern isn’t.
Now these are real dancers, there is so little out there now of proper movers and this is indeed a rare find, great to watch, I used to be the shape of these people here lol prob not more than 9 stone , where did the energy come from, we must have been nuclear powered
Was just thinking that, some really great footwork and everyone seems very much in harmony and no jostling others nor trying to grab the limelight. Really wonderful nostalgia. I was just slightly too young but caught a lot of those singles that didn't make the chart at some point duing my youth club days, our DJ kept the faith.

This track came out in 1975 however the original track came out in 1968 it was called footsie and it was by the chosen few on roulette records. It was messed about with for the 1975 version at a time when northern soul had become a bit commercial. Having said that the song does have a place in northern history.

There used to about 10 of us from Leyland went to the casino early 1974,we used to get the 113 bus to Wigan from Hough Lane at 10.30pm,the casino didn't open in them days till 2pm,so we just hung about avoiding all the piss heads.

I learnt about northern soul dancing, by watching Footsee on TOTP. I was the only one who did the dance at my local disco.
I used to do that jumping up and landing with knees bent . Not now lol 54 with knackered knees wrists and elbows great at the time but suffering now
I Went to Wigan Casino 1976/77 and there were always people saying that the Torch and the Wheel were better days, i just loved my time and will always remember dancing to records like Tony Christie[Nobody in the world]Little Anthony and imperials[It,s not the same]Babe Ruth [Elusive]Velvet Satins[Nothing can compare to you]all the best to Northern soul fans everywhere ktf
