I'm British person who's experienced this from the other side: I was the foreigner when I studied at a Spanish university & worked in France. I'm a qualified teacher & one of my roles was to look after the language assistants at my school. I've found that wherever you are in the world, locals will be interested in you because you're different & we're a curious species. Just be open with people, smile, answer them when they talk to you, ask them questions, show interest in them & the British way of life, ask advice too or for clarification in what something means or how something is done.
If you're really struggling to meet people, go to a university or further education college, to the language department & put up a note saying you want to do a conversation exchange with someone learning the language of your home country. You meet up (remember to keep it safe!) & speak for equal times in English & your native language. I did this in Spain when I was a student, & the people I met introduced me to others until I had large circle of friends. The first guy I met was a mature guy just looking to pickup an English girl as he thought we were easy! I only met him once. I hit the jackpot with the second guy, who was a student 1 year younger than me who introduced me to his female cousin. The 3 of us have been friends for 30 years now.
It was easier in France because I was working, teaching English in a language school for adults. I made a good group of friends there, from my age to within 10-15 years older than me, but also people who'd retired & were learning English to keep their brains active who sort of adopted me as their English grand-daughter, inviting me for meals & taking me on day trips, introducing me to their families, etc. They were lovely. My group of old ladies & 1 man (aged 75-90) were always doing things together. They went on a week's trip to Paris & invited me but I couldn't get time off work. They brought me back a gorgeous present, a silver ring from one of the museum, a replica of one owned by Cleopatra. They thought it would fit with my style. I was a punk, with black hair & extreme make-up. I still treasure the ring.
It's funny, but everywhere I go, I end up with at least 1good friend who is elderly. In Spain, it was my landlady's mum, who was in her 80s. She was fascinated with my makeup & asked me to do it on her once, so I did. One night, I spiked her hair into liberty spikes & put full black Siouxsie-Sioux style makeup on her & she loved it. She actually went out to meet her friends like that & I was asked to meet them all for a 'girly night'. It was fun!
We're all humans at the end of the day, & we have more similarities than differences, no matter which country we're from. You've got a fantastic opportunity by living in a foreign country. Make the most of it. 🙂

Hey Arnaud. EFL teacer here. When you ask questions in English, don't forget to invert the subject and the verb. Unlike French, we don't usually just use tonation to indicate a question, we also bring the verb behind the subject (ie You are./Are you?).

@@ArnaudFromFrance While it may be true that there are specifics about word order, even natives sometimes swap them around and most of all, no matter the word order we'll generally understand what you're trying to say. Don't ever worry about getting it perfect, we'd rather you attempt to speak than worry too much about grammatical rules. I have many friends from different countries, some barely spoke English at first, but we managed to communicate, and their English improved with practice.

As a foreigner in the UK, I found it difficult to have friends in real life without relying on an online medium ( social media platforms and apps..). Although I went to university and was involved in extracurricular activities, I still didn't manage to have close friendships for many reasons and one of them is drinking alcohol.

In a previous incarnation I worked with French exchange students for nearly 20 years. I was friends with them all, they taught me how to swear like a Frenchman and I helped with their English. The best way is just to say chat with us, weather firstly xD
But never ever worry about pronunciation, we will fill in the gaps and steer you. But also don't worry about the arseholes you will meet; every country has them!

Coming from the opposite direction - I'm a little older but I worked in an international chemical company and I liked nothing better than making foreign friends... I made French, German and Italian friends. All they needed to do was not be scared when a strange English guy started talking to them. 😂😂😂

Hey Arnaud, I'm glad I found your channel, and as a Brit who briefly lived in France, speaking, speaking and speaking helps a lot from my perspective. The problem with some cultures is they can be suspicious of us, in my experience Chinese also have a particular problem with their diction and pronunciation and if they made the effort to mix a little, this would improve. Of course, pronunciation isn't the be all and end all of everything, but some of the pronunciation here from your interviewees was so poor, I couldn't understand without the subtitles, so if they want to get good jobs here, I would advise they get out more and try to improve on that by mixing with us Brits to learn the real working English. We're a friendly, open minded lot, and love the pub.... Where better to get to know people and improve your English!? Anyway, I have just subscribed to your channel and I look forward to seeing more videos. Rich 🙂

@@who798 It makes sense in the context of many remoaners, including some politicians, describing all leave voters as racist xenophobes. I continue to be grateful that the UK has, more or less, left the EU.
