That was really good. The other kid was getting all the air time, but that one zinger is the most memorable of that clip! Americans neither use banter nor taking the piss as descriptors for that sort of engagement. We know what banter means, but it's just not used all that much. Taking the piss means something entirely different though!

Being English is the best thing in the world though.
I've been around a bit, my globe-scratch map looks fuller every day. I love Italy (especially Italy), France, Germany, The USA and I wouldn't change them for the world.
But when I get home to England it's just so beautiful. I love how lush and green it is, despite the rain, because of the rain even. I love English people's sense of humour.
I'm not talking about Britain(/London) and Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. I'm not any of those things. I do love them all dearly too.
There's that thing that goes around the internet about "If you could, which country would you choose to be from?"
I uhm and ahh a bit, maybe the USA, Australia or Italy. But the answer is always the same:
I love being English, I'd choose to be from England.
One thing I think is really great about England is that it assimilates everyone and everything and makes it part of English culture. Then English culture is that much richer for having absorbed something else.
I think there is a tendency to conflate British and English to a large degree, especially in London. Then there's also the stereotype of The British Person which is largely based on the upper classes and aristocracy.
The population of England outside of London is 46 million, by far the largest distinct national population in the entire UK. I think that population is largely forgotten about and disregarded when it comes to the media, stereotypes and perceptions of the country.
I also think Englishness has been dealt a poor reputation by certain small segments of the population in the 1980s.
I do think that is all reflected in our humour because we're so self-effacing. Other people try to make jokes about us to insult us without realising how much better we are at insulting ourselves.
I love England.
A good sense of humour is essential for having a healthy view on life. My mom used to say: “Better to lose a good friend than to skip a good joke.” And I’m from Germany, a country whose people are not really famous for their sense of humour.

All it took to achieve this artistry was post-war rationing, nationalisation of industry, socialism, and loss of power on the world stage. If you've ever wondered why Britain was an also ran, music-wise, in the history of European creativity but suddenly rocketed to the top of the list in the 1960s, that's why: societal depression, economic and otherwise. As a Brit these are my positives and negatives about my fellow Brits. Positives: we tend to act politely and considerately towards strangers. We have a sense of "fair play" and don't like people breaking the rules of social etiquette (queue-jumping etc...). We are generally quite law-abiding. Our driving style is usually courteous and not particularly aggressive. Our businesses tend to provide good customer service. We have general good public services and a good level of trust in these (not necessarily in politicians though!). We are increasingly adventurous in our culinary habits and many of us like to try new ingredients and cooking styles. We tend to have a very witty, clever and nuanced sense of humour. Our universities are well-known and well-respected around the world. Negatives: our obsession with class. Our ridiculous superiority complex and mistaken belief that we are still a big player on the world stage. Our laziness with regards to taking a serious interest in other languages and cultures. With regards to England in particular, there is the ignorant attitude of many English people towards the other three home nations (Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) and towards other countries in general. Our main fault is too much xenophobia and racism (more so in England than the other home nations, sadly).

U.K. was voted one of the least racist countries in Europe by an Eu led survey
very good insights, particularly the bad attitude towards the other home nations, but Id strongly disagree on the racism issue. England is like 2 decades ahead of countries like spain or italy, and Ive lived in all those countries and a few more, and the least racist country Ive encountered , with the most advanced attitudes towards race was England far, far ahead of particularly spain.
Love the fact that you got those kids in front of the camera. As for British humor (self-deprecating, a bit "brutal" with friends), I'd have to say that Northern Germans (Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein) do share that trait :-).
I wish I could agree, but people here find it hard to get my sense of humour and they never join in. Banter really isn't a thing here. As much as I agree with you on the northern Germany humour being quite dry and harsh, I would still say it is nothing like British humour.
I've watched this video twice in a row, and still I haven't any clear idea of what they think about themselves 😅.

i know these videos are made for language learners but actually as a Brit this is really interesting to watch. i could watch a lot more just on this one question asking in different places in the uk... I've been living outside the uk for over a decade. I was born on the south coast which is where i think this was filmed..? well. I have to say, I can relate to the older couple who have lived abroad, they were probably in an expat bubble... but i still see their point. you just miss home after a while, you miss your culture, humour etc and it makes you appreciate your home more when you are away. if i had to describe brits on the whole i'd say that they do not have the same awareness of themselves and their appearance as other nations. brits are just content being themselves and being real. we also do have issues with not wanting to upset people and it's a kind of anxiety that we are brought up with, that care for other's emotions... non existent in other countries, which is why we get tired in other countries and miss home. in what other country would someone call me 'my love' at the cash desk of a supermarket? in what other country would a cashier ask me how my week is going? these things only happen in the uk which is why the uk is such a unique place. if you just take london out of the picture, i think london is a culture of its own. i don't get it. Brits are great. We do live in a disconnected bubble, but it's a good one.

@@EasyEnglishVideos I'm living in france, I lived near to Paris for 6 years, now I'm in the countryside near to Lyon so the two places are worlds apart. I come from Bournemouth and usually go home every summer. I'm a tiny youtuber... I want to make a series talking to people in Lyon, also one in Bournemouth. (if you want to see an interesting seeies see Pablo Strong and his London Streets series, it's epic) but I love this kind of cultural comment thing.

You'll get people either telling you why the city is so great or how they dream of leaving... same story in Paris. But I bet if you ask people in the countryside which they prefer they'll say they wouldn't like to live in the city.
Reminds me of a Belgian newspaper article listing '10 reasons to hate Britan' followed by the usual suspects (bad food, perceived self-importance) but capped the article off by reminding their reads that Britan '(was a) Liberator which came to our defence everytime we were invaded' 😎
I'm absolutely proud to be British, I love Scotland, England, northern Ireland and Wales.
Our contribution to mankind throughout history is incomparable to anyone.
Our sense of humour, and friendliness is second to none. I will never hear a bad word against our wee island. 🇬🇧
As spaniard I strongly believe the UK is absolutely amazing indeed and at the same time, both countries are really similar in lots of aspects. I lived there for 5 months and been around other UK locations for business and family and always found good people. But the relevant thing is as you said: the contribution in literature, arts, music, tecnology, maths, physics is very huge. And yep, your self-deprecation is unbeatable.
I saved it once but I don't have the source now so I'm only retelling what I once knew.
A Japanese study ranked countries by their contribution to the world in terms of globally significant inventions and innovations. I do not know what their metrics were.
The United Kingdom came out on top with 54% of globally significant inventions and innovations.
That's more than half, compared to the entire rest of the planet, that is a lot.
I can't remember the rest, obviously, but I don't think many other countries even got into double figures.
Plus, a little bonus factoid:
Even after Brexit, COVID and the ongoing inflation crisis the world seems to be undergoing, the UK still has the 5th largest economy in the world in 2023. Which has actually increased since 2022. Astonishing.

Always love these videos. I watch every week even though I'm a native English speaker. I think a good idea for some videos would be to ask people what they think about the other UK countries (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

Every time I return to the UK I feel like I can finally breathe again. I can't really grasp what it is that makes me feel so good when I'm there, but it certainly has to do with the beauty of acceptance and tolerance that one can sense everywhere. No matter how you look, dress, don't dress, if you're coming around the corner with or without make up, dressed in pyjamas or whatever else your creative spirit's made you wear, people look at you like you are completely fine 💜 Brits have an astoundingly open minded attitude towards travellers and are so sweet, helpful and jolly and witty and polite. This is my humble Swiss opinion. And PS. Never have I ever experienced so many gentlemen letting me hop onto the bus before them 🥰 or holding the door for me.

l am English and I disagree. Different parts of the country react differently. Maybe in more quirky, tolerant, multi-cultural London, but in some northern backwater anyone who is slightly different will most likely get mocked or picked on. Less so nowadays, but it's only in the last decade when it's become more liberal in the north. I left University and lived in Sheffield in the late 1990s and had a music inspired fashion sense and I would get looked at often as a weirdo and still to this day can get called a weirdo. Whereas, if I lived in London, no one would look at me twice and be seen as cool. Different mentalities in different parts of the country.

Very interesting video. I have to say that it's amusing to me to see the captions and how words are spelled. Of particular interest is "erm". In the USA, we'd spell that "um" because there isn't a pronounced r sound in it, and most Americans nearly always pronounce the r, no matter where it lands in a word.
To be honest I kind of do it how it sounds… quite fun to add all the ums… ahs… erms… and ohs….

A lout is someone who displays acts of aggression, now just add many pints of beer on top 😂😂
violent alcoholics, the stereotype is the groups of men on package holidays or travelling to watch football games, in a sort of organised trip for violence. unfortunately this is what Brits are famous for world wide.. that and sunday tea with cucumber sandwiches. it's a bizarre combination tbh. two extremes. are we the royal family, or are we raging alcoholic lunatics..?
They seem to be focusing on 'the English' instead of 'the Brits' But they're quite right about the smalltalk and banter. I think that that varies wildly around the various parts of Britain. I'm from the North of England, and i find people down south completely don't get my banter and seem offended or confused by it. But also the banter in the north of Scotland is far more polite than mine too. and theres far more (half interested, but not really) smalltalk than banter in Northern Ireland.
I’m English. We’re fatalistic and we know full well that life’s a real shit. We are polite but it’s of no help when in say America it’s not useful but a detriment.

The drunk and disorderly behaviour of some Brits, home and abroad, is frown on by many Brits. An English friend of mine once called them "a national disgrace". I wouldn't be so drastic though. They often buy you drinks😁

I grew up with all the old classic British movies shown here in the states. The history, the greatness, the grit. It's all still there in the people. They just don't vote that way anymore, unfortunately. You can still be a beacon in the world and not be ashamed . There's no shame in being proud of your heritage. Britain has a very long story, and shouldn't be defined by those who want to make the ink run until you can't read it anymore. Lager-Louty? Maybe the lady would prefer that all Brits sit around in a circle and read Shakespeare. You should hear the Germans or Italians in an Austrian beer hall!

@@marikaserasini2315 Okay so here's how I'd explain it (I'm from England but also have links to Sicily/Italy)... There are four countries in the United Kingdom... England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Three of those countries are on an island called Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). The fourth country in the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, is on the island called Ireland (an island that is shared with the Republic of Ireland). The term "British" is a broad term, because people from the different countries have slightly different cultural experiences. It's like the way that the culture in Northern Italy is quite different from Southern Italy, even though it has a lot in common. Also, there's a fair amount of rivalry between the different countries, especially with the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish disliking the English because of the English having most of the political power and cultural influence. I'm assuming that P S brought up this point as a lot of people use the term "British" to describe the English, and people from the other nations get overlooked. In short, the United Kingdom is a bit like a family, we have a lot in common and get on most of the time but our differences also cause some friction. It's fine to use the term British, but it's also helpful to remember it describes people from a group of countries.

Come saprei la nazione Regno Unito (United Kingdom) è formata da quattro "regioni", che in realtà hanno governi autonomi: Inghilterra, Scozia e Galles, che si trovano nell'isola principale detta Gran Bretagna (Great Britain o Britain) e dall'Irlanda del Nord, che si trova fisicamente nell'isola vicina, coincidente con l'Irlanda, ma che politicamente appartiene al Regno Unito. Quindi se parliamo di Regno Unito parliamo dell'intera nazione, se parliamo di Bretagna parliamo delle tre "regioni" che si trovano sull'isola principale, detta appunto Gran Bretagna, e se parliamo di Inghilterra stiamo parlano di un'unica "regione" dell'isola. Quindi Britannico (British) significa abitante della Gran Bretagna (inglesi, scozzesi e gallesi) mentre Inglesi sono solo gli abitanti dell'Inghilterra (ma non comprendono scozzesi, gallesi e ovviamente neanche nord irlandesi, che hanno tradizioni e storie culturali specifiche che tengono ad affermane). Molti però confondono e chiamano Inghilterra tutta la Bretagna e inglesi tutti i britannici. Giustamente gli scozzesi e i gallesi ci tengono a precisare che gli inglesi sono solo gli abitanti dell'Inghilterra, ma non tutti i britannici. Spero di essere stato chiaro.

Forse perché, essendo l'Inghilterra il luogo dove si trova Londra ed essendo la parte più popolare per via della grande influenza in musica, cinema ecc, a molti viene spontaneo usare il termine "Inghilterra" per identificare l'intero Regno Unito e "inglese" per tutti i britannici. Si, in effetti è un po' come quando si chiamano "romagnoli" tutti gli abitanti dell'Emilia Romagna, hai ragione. :-)

Just adding to my recent comment: I utterly agree with other comments about our obsession with class. I regret that, much as our monarchy with all its pageantry and trappings are attractive to many visitors to this country, I think that as a nation we are considerably held back by our lingering, outdated deference and pre-occupations with class and heritage. While we continue to have a private school system - perversely called 'public' schools for reasons that are utterly baffling even to most Brits! - which is propped up by an anachronistic, undeserved 'charitable status' - producing many of our so-called 'leaders', e.g. Boris Johnson (!!!), we will struggle to free ourselves from these class-ridden obsessions! If this all makes me sound like a jaundiced, anti-monarchist leftie, I'm honestly NOT...however, if ordinary Brits (including myself) believed in ourselves more as being 'as good as the next person' (rather in the Aussie manner), we might begin to be more confident, forward-looking, and positive (but not about leaving the EU...that was a terrible example of 'lions led by donkeys') ...but then, maybe we wouldn't need the 'brutal', self-deprecating humour!! Now that would be a great loss. 🤥! Ah well, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, and all who sail in her!!

TERRIBLE BEHAVIOURS AGAINST FOREIGNERS
I generally highly rate this channel but I found these interviewees very disappointing, in the sense that many of the interviewees came across as barely articulate! The two young boys were, for me, the best: genuinely funny in a very British way! However, some of the adults were apparently 'tongue-tied' by a poor range of vocabulary and they resorted to a great deal of 'like...like', and similar 'fillers'. Oh, but perhaps that's all part of their intuitive national sense of 'deep irony'...deliberately appearing to be inarticulate!! I'm a fellow Brit; I'm very fond of our famed sense of humour (especially the TRULY DARK sort!!), but also not impressed by some of our less admirable traits, such as the lingering contempt for learning. This shows itself in a tendency of numerous Brits to label almost anything as 'posh' if it has any hint of being tasteful or educated or ...articulate!!
