- Today I Had Special Visitor Vikkie The Carpenters Daughter we chatted all things woodworking diy and TH-cam, we also Sharpened some chisels and Vikkie did her first hand cut Dovetails. The video has been broken down into two parts the first on my channel and the second to follow on Vikkies which will be the Dovetail section.

Great teacher, great student. Interesting to listen to two fellow Yorkshires discussing their approach to woodworking. I am old school in many ways including a sketch pad (paper one) and a drawing board so didn't get on with SketchUp. I do use a separate set of cheap but sharp chisels to go anywhere near old wood or nailed wood. Great video with two YT favourites.

I like the hands on tuition you gave Vikkie on sharpening Karl. Unless I hit a nail, brilliant comment, my thoughts exactly at the same time. Vikkie sharpened that chisel to perfection listening
to the sound of it slicing through the second sheet of paper. I tried Sketchup, I ditched Sketchup. Sketchup was too much thinking and overloaded my old brain cells lol. Enjoyed the video. Tony
I'm the exact same with sketchup Tony that's why Jakob has been given the task. Ye Vikkie did a great job hopefully she won't be hitting any nail soon with her freshly sharpened chisels 😀
@@karlpopewoodcraft I'm using/learning QCAD now as its very similar to QuickCad I used many years ago, it's only 2D but it's good for technical drawings. Give it a try Karl. If Jakob can crack Sketchup he's well on the way to future CNC incorporated material in one way or another. Tony

Hello! Great video! I've got a question about that eclipse style honing guide and I'm never too sure. When using it does the chisel rest on the two metal rails or is pressed into top?

Hi mate, thanks for watching, if I'm understanding your question correctly the chisel is pressed between the guides.
@@karlpopewoodcraft Thank you, the question is a bit of a weird one and I find it difficult to describe. Essentially, I've always been slipping the chisel in the chisel jaws of the guide, and pushing the back of the chisel to the very top of that section so the flat back is resting closest to the plane jaws. But I had a bit of a "hang on am I doing this wrong moment" a couple of weeks ago and started wondering if maybe the chisel should be resting at the base of the chisel section of the honing guide, so that the 'front' (smaller part of the chisel) is resting on the two guide rails, that way it would accommodate chisels with non-bevelled sides.
I realised I could just look at the internet, and I was correct in the first place and I should just ignore my sudden "what if" moment :D Thank you for taking the time to answer!
