Hi Tim, This is my first viewing of your channel, and honestly, I enjoyed your content, description, and format. Simply - Well done. Thank you for your time and effort, it's refreshing. I'll be back for more, keep it up.
I made an aluminum pool cue. Came out great but every time I play pool my hands turn black. Therefore when I made the knob for my MR2 I used delrin with aluminum top. It has a nice feel and looks good too. No blackened hands.
Cars never used to have any numbers on the top of the gear knob. At a certain point in time it was found to be necessary. I could say why but not in front of the GF. I think it looked better blank to make a point.
sweet hair dude! I'm definitely going to make one in my next lathe class. I like the etching idea, but could you make a small bowl out of that material so it can just soak in a puddle of it to leave it alone? I think I'd leave mine alone but if I could I'd mill in the numbers
Haha thanks! And yeah I'm sure you could and I thought of that but I don't know that it would really etch much faster and you wouldn't be able to see how it was going.
I'm sure I could have! I considered using paint before removing the stencil but the etching left it a pretty dark gray anyway. I haven't see Aluminum Black before but I'm going to have to pick some up to play with it.
Ha oh, well I don't think it would have gotten any more etched with the muriatic acid - it would have just kept getting deeper and probably making the design sloppy. Aluminum black would have been a pretty nice follow up though.
Thanks for watching and the feedback! It's tough because I get about the same number of comments who like the music as I do who don't... but then my like:dislike ratio is always pretty good so I figure 90%+ of the people like it the way it is? I'm not sure.. it's hard to please everyone. It's also getting tough to find new songs so maybe I'll stop adding them anyway? Either way I hope you can keep watching!
Aluminium is tricky, polished even more so. So you're either stuck with polishing on a regular (for a shifter, say about a month) interval for about 5 minutes or coating it. However, most clear-coats (spray cans) don't grip very well on bare metal, so you're kind of pushed towards 2-component lacquers. There used to be some chemical (can't find it anymore) that my grandfather used to use which was some foul smelling lacquer that was applied with a cotton ball, which gave a near perfect clear coating on anything you put it on. He used it on PCB's as well, but I can't find it right now, I'll continue to look for it, but don't get your hopes up; a lot of stuff my grandfather used to use that worked wonders isn't available today for the benefit of longevity On the other hand, it might be a nice project for a video to make an anodizing bath. Clear anodizing will however dull the finish a bit, at the gain of durability of course. Personally, I'd go with the anodizing, as I really like how it feels. The second in line would be to keep polishing it with "Belgom ALU" every once in a while. If you have more aluminium parts you want to polish, I highly recommend the stuff, it's like polishing with cream made of angelwings. Get a can (about 12 euro ex delivery) and I promise, you won't be disappointed. Third would be the lacquer, however finding a good one might prove tricky. As promised, I'll keep looking too, see if I can find grandpa's magic ooze :D You could always have it clear powder coated, but I have no idea how the end result would look/feel.
got my own mini lathe today *_* one question, the original toolpost is shit, no discussion needed, but its currently the only thing i have, so i gotta work with it. now i have the main issue with the tools not beeing in the center of the workpiece, do you have to use shim stock or whats the deal here?
I took that off before I even started using it and now only use it for my knurling tool... but yes, from what I've seen, you just have to shim the bottom of the tool to get it to the correct height. Congrats on getting a mini lathe :)
oh shied, thats stupid, why didnt they put screws on the bottom and top, that would make this thing at least usable. but yeh i think i order that quickchange stuff on amazon, not that expensive! so excited about finally having a lathe!
i enjoy your videos, not down with the music but i just turn it down, no worries isnt it great to have the choice to just turn something down if you dont enjoy it! your video your music bud, screw em if they dont like it. please keep putting out your videos.
Thanks! And maybe so, I thought it looked kind of plain otherwise and thought the Jeep logo pattern would be neat. Plus I wanted to try etching something.
it's his life not yours! You seem so concerned about him wearing a seat belt, but I'll bet you support planned parenthood and the killing of babies! figure that one out....
Beautiful shift knob. Thank you for how-to, especially on the etching!
I really appreciate that and thanks for watching! I'm glad it was useful for you :)
That shift knob has made the car faster!! Because Its tha bom!!! Very nice.
I hope you continue to upgrade your TJ.
Shifter knob looks awesome.

Props to you. I absolutely love how this turned out! Keep up the stunning work!
Thank you so much!
Well done mate, etching came out really well and the design is awesome 👌👌
Thank you very much! I'm really happy with how it turned out :)

Lovely work. Great video. Keep them coming.
Thank you
Thanks so much! Will do :)
Good project Tim, I’ll have to try the etching.
nice and elegant project, congrats for your creativity. I have a jeep too, a xj.
Awesome. You may do a handbrake cover to match now!

Not many people your age know how to drive a standard these days or run a lathe.
Probably because they are both nearly obsolete skills.
Good things never leave us.
Good things never leave us.
i really don't see how running a lathe is a obsolete skill
That's because neither of those skills is obsolete.
Very nice! Could you have used something like Aluminum Black to color in the etch before you removed the stencil?
I'm sure I could have! I considered using paint before removing the stencil but the etching left it a pretty dark gray anyway.
I haven't see Aluminum Black before but I'm going to have to pick some up to play with it.
TimNummy tbh I would have just run it through a chemical arch again.
What does that mean?
TimNummy it was meant to say etch but my phone is stupid 😂
Ha oh, well I don't think it would have gotten any more etched with the muriatic acid - it would have just kept getting deeper and probably making the design sloppy. Aluminum black would have been a pretty nice follow up though.
consider shooting with a thin layer of clearcoat polyurethane auto paint, as raw aluminum reacts with salts in skin
Thanks! Probably not a bad idea..
Screws shift knob into jeep. Next episode "I broke my diff, again..." 😉
good job, nice job, nice work, mastercraft
Thanks!
nice ida with the logo.
Thanks!
grate job look forward to more videos.
Thanks!
I completely agree with the person who finds your music off putting. Love the videos though
Thanks for watching and the feedback!

Good stuff mate, I might have a go
Nice work!
Thanks!
OMG….that came out Sweet.
where you buy the muriatic acid?
can you make a stencil same as you did in video for a ford truck 4 speed with reverse to the right and back ,
Which material you have been using for polishing
Plz tell me
great work..... looks awesome.
Hi, How deep can you etch the aluminum?
Nice! Don't forget to put a clearcoating on, or you'll be polishing your knob a lot... or don't if you're into that kind of thing ;)
Just a regular paint clear coat? or is there something special for aluminum?

More video on the lathe ;-)
I would like to etch a smilar design on a stainless steel shift know. What chemical would you recommend for that?
Hydrochloric acid should work well for that :)
Use baking soda to neutralize the acid

Nice seat belt
How do you rate the saniu chuck?
Is there any sort of polish or coating you can put on to keep it shiny/prevent scratches?
I would guess anything you'd use to protect polished aluminum wheels would work nicely.
i enjoy your videos, not down with the music but i just turn it down, no worries isnt it great to have the choice to just turn something down if you dont enjoy it! your video your music bud, screw em if they dont like it. please keep putting out your videos.
very very good
Thanks!
Can you order?
you took too much off from the headlight on the stencil
super gemacht alter
Dude your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car, you might want to take it to the garage to get them to correct that :)
69pilon I was going to say the same thing...
Looks so funny seeing people drive on the left side of a car 🚙
What is the editor you have?
For what? the videos? pictures?
I made the design in an old version of photoshop, but GIMP would do just as well.
Are you secretly slash?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
that's awesome
Thanks!
11:09 name music pls
Awesome machine work design and presentation...... don’t be afraid to cut that hair
nice
It's a gear stick not a shift nob!
tomato, tomato
:)
Very nice work.
I thought you could have left the top without the etch. Anyone who doesn't know your car's gearbox shouldn't be driving your car.
Thanks! And maybe so, I thought it looked kind of plain otherwise and thought the Jeep logo pattern would be neat. Plus I wanted to try etching something.
:O
NO SEATBELT!!!
:O
Oops!
It was a very short, slow test drive - still not an excuse though.
it's his life not yours! You seem so concerned about him wearing a seat belt, but I'll bet you support planned parenthood and the killing of babies! figure that one out....
Jesse Fritz Yeah man, you got it!
Calm down. It was meant funny.
I'm totally fine. Nancy boy.
you need to lose the music kind of made the video Dumb I guess you would say other than that it was a pretty good video
Thanks...
Otimo
Obrigado!
minblowing
I find the music to be quite off-putting, especially the high pitched electronic noise, perhaps you could use classical music instead?
nicktohzyu I like the music in all his videos.
Thanks for the suggestion... I might give that a try next time.
yeah i thought alvin and the chipmunks wasnt funny any more
You are doing a great job, but your music is awful :/
A real man wouldn't have needed a shift pattern and before you say it, his girlfriend OR his mother wouldn't have either!
Which material you have been using for polishing
Plz tell me
I did a video on polishing... th-cam.com/video/VPmIRAz0XhY/w-d-xo.html
