I like the Birchwood Caseys Gun Bluing. I've made numerous projects in my shop and blued them using their product. It always gives a nice rich color. The best part is it's fairly cheap at about $11/bottle.
Nice work. I like your pen project.

hey tim, it looks like your chips were not free from some oily residues, maybe that is also a factor. i blued a centerpunch successfully by heating it up with the torch directly, needs patience and the chances to screw up are pretty high to be honest, but it works great if you take care not to overheat the part.
try a small copper/brass pan filled with brass or copper chips, copper should work great since its highly thermally conductive .)
by the way, i changed the bearings on my lathe to tapered rollerbearings, its an amazing difference and i can recommend you doing this aswell (doesnt cost much) but the turning quality makes a huge step forward!

cool pen I want one now! you should make a version like your scribe so it retracts with the cap always on the back. maybe out of some steel, or brass.

Hello, for 'coloring' steel, when I arc weld, I sometimes brush the weld with a brass brush and it gives the brass color to the weld only. Maybe try it out, but I think you don't heat the part enough

I miss the music, that along with the clever editing made your videos stand out from the rest even more. Any chance of you doing a video about the CB360? engine that you lift off the bench in the intro of the earlier videos? It looks beautifully built.

Can stainless be "blued?" Never mind...I think I "heard" stainless when you actually said "spring."

You don't quench steel to blue it
