    I've owned 7 of these incredible little machines and one man's opinion the 4.0 is one of the best engines ever built! If properly maintained they will easily go 300,000 miles. However, several things you should do as SOON as you get it home, replace; crank position sensor, cam position sensor, MAP sensor, and strap down all three of the PCM plugs. Do this and you're usually good to go for thousands of miles.

      @@darrylrichey9517 mmm I doubt that I tryed everything I could on this jeep and nothing would work and if it did it would be like maybe a week or something and then I be back where I was and it would happen in the pouring rain and I have to get out and wiggle the connection and get it to start back again . Most pain in the ass I ever dealt with I hated that jeep but it was my ex jeep so that's why there alot videos on it too basically was used in the relationship I worked on it alot trying to fix the problems it had and the biggest was the computer and her parents didn't believe me of buying a new computer to fix it and they ended up selling it and buying a ford with more problems and needed a transmission ha witch cost more buying another vehicle plus a new trans . Anyways long story short her dad had the same exact jeep and his started doing the same damn thing and so did her grandparents jeep to . Remove the throttle body (TBI) and disassemble and change 4 orings that go on the shaft, they dry out and let air in, the idle speed is high and also oscillating! I took a tip from a friend and it solved my problem. If you move the shaft up and down with your hand you will see that the idle speed changes. Greetings from Brazil.

      Ended up being a bad computer causing all the issues very very extremely common for these Jeeps the connectors have an issue if you wiggle them the Jeep would cut off and the customer that had this Jeep had two other ones like it and they both did the same exact problem

  • @cookoutnorthwest2495
    @cookoutnorthwest2495 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Swapped out PCM from junkyard. Serial number was off 1 letter but I got it anyway. Hooked up other PCM on my broken down jeep on side of road. And it fired right up. All the ignition switch codes were cleared out too. If it has been taken apart before and opened to be resoldered. Just replace it. You can only dry out and "patch-up" a part a couple times till you have a breakdown.
    If you put a bunch of dielectric grease in the connectors and it runs better than you may get away with it for a little while but that Power Train module will completely die soon.
    This video helped me thanks.

    Just wanted to update, replaced the computer and learned something new about these things. 91 to 98 has a relay box behind the battery. Theres a relay that is labeled asd in there. That controls power to ignition, spark plugs, injectors, and fuel pump. When that goes bad itll cause the jeep to stall while driving and after a few minutes itll recrank and may run may keep stalling. But issues resolved shes been running like a top

    I've got one exact same year make and model, and I already replaced map because it was stalling and backfiring, but for about 4 months it never had a ck en lght, but when it finally did, autozone said I needed map sensor, so I got it and after we put it on, it ran worse, and it still had ck en again, so this time we took it to the OReillys and they told me it's a mis, and they sold me a ignition coil, which didn't really help either. I bought it in December and it's been gradually getting worse, and a few months ago I kept Googling what it could be, and I came across your video, and the I'd give it a and it actually ran for about a week but it still keeps dying on me, and the only way it'll run is when I mess with it, so my question is, does this mean I need to get a new computer?

    • @KnuckleHeadGarage27
      @KnuckleHeadGarage27  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I would say if it has same issues this one did and it would act up if you mess with the computer on the fire wall then more than likely it's the same problem . Very common on these jeeps , this jeep was my ex's and her parents had one same color same year but 4×4 with 4.0 and it did the exact same thing and backfired and blew the muffler apart and then her grandparents got one and it did it too
      After seeing that and many others with same issues I'll never own one lol and I'm not sure if it happens on the v8 jeeps or not but I know it does on the 4.0's

I need to get it running and I guess try to get rid of it,as much as I like the way they look. I found some refurbished ones on ebay for like 130, so I guess I just need to do it asap.

    My 98 ZJ 4.0 starts dying when the engine gets up to temp. Wiggling the connectors on the PCM will kill it too but only after the engine bay is hot, I wonder if heat expands the connector pins just enough for there to be a loose connection? Could I possibly bend the connector pins a little bit so they make contact with the pins better? Or do I just need a new PCM. Thanks 🙏🙏

    • @KnuckleHeadGarage27
      @KnuckleHeadGarage27  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would assume just the circuit board inside is cracked in places or solder joints or just something inside and after the vehicle is running for a certen time its vibrating and causing it to act up as it is trying to warm up . These are very very notorious for this problem I have fixed so so many with this problem after this jeep the 4.0s or v8s both do it

  • @ryanstoll1159

    Having this same problem “again”. Had this problem a couple years ago and replaced the PCM and it worked for a while. Then It would start to cut off again a year or so later so i changed CPS with OEM part and it was good for a while. About 1-2 years later , where I am now, its starting to do it again. I cant wrap my head around it being the PCM or CPS again. But Ive heard something about the factory radio. Because the truck just shuts off, no sputtering or spitting. Just up and turns off. Feels like a grounding or some
    Kind of electrical issue. Any suggestions? Maybe the coil? Thats of the only things i havent replaced.

    • @KnuckleHeadGarage27
      @KnuckleHeadGarage27  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Could be the coil or anything. Really is hard to diagnose without being around it to see in person . Cpuld be needing a tune up or crank sensor. Really not clue and yes the radios ive seen that cause problems. I would go buy a after market one and that way u know that's done plus it be better than stock ones they don't pickup good signal stations. Also seen the radios cause the battery to die over night .

      Check the wire harness coming from the computer where it wraps around the back of the valve cover. There is engine stud on cycled 6 that sticks up and the wiring harness rests on it and it eventually wears through and creates a short. I just fixed mine with some liquid electrical tape, redid the plastic protector and placed a bung over the stud. Check this area before replacing sensors. I had the same symptoms described in the video.

    • @KnuckleHeadGarage27
      @KnuckleHeadGarage27  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I never really had codes or anything . The only thing that did was ignition coil. And I replaced it twice because of problems but main problem was the computer it was all related to that . U could literally wiggle the connectors to it while was running and the jeep with cut up or just cut off stall out and this went on fir months like this until the customer decided to sell instead of buying another computer for it cause vehicle had other issues too . Already had other things done to it . New water pump , new temp sensor , ignition coil , plugs , wires , cap and rotor , serpentine belt , tires , alternator , radiator , cherry bomb muffler because the stock one blew a hole in it from the vehicle backfiring , plus few other things so they just sold it instead. Has transmission problems tho was slipping in first - 2nd gear sometimes would shudder really bad and the lifters or rocker arms would rattle so bad as heard in video. I Believe they got 500 out of it

    • @KnuckleHeadGarage27
      @KnuckleHeadGarage27  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that it could , or the crankshaft sensor .
      But the fuel pump I would get a tester an see what the readings are for pressure an if it is losing fuel or how much actual fuel pressure your getting when u turn the key to prime it .
      Ignition coil could be getting to hot or have crackes in it an causing the problem too

      Sounds like you have a problem with the computer if you open the hood with engine running go over to the firewall where the computer is and wiggle the connectors that go to it if it cuts off or does anything weird Beyond normal then that's your problem. Because that was the problem with this vehicle I had problems with the computer and the wiring to it the connectors if you look up online there's a whole thing about the Jeep Cherokees cutting off and backfiring and having problems and It All Leads back to the computer because they're screws put into the computer from Factory and they are too long and hit and ground out the circuit board inside and fry it and that's what messes them up . I hope you get this. I have a 97 jeep grand Cherokee laredo, 4.0 inline six with right 180k on it. Started as a minor stalling issue, then it would die at 55mph going down the road. Would always restart as soon as I turned the key. So I have replaced, cps, ignition coil, all new distributor, plugs and wires, throttle position sensor. Nothings improved it. It's gotten to the point when it stalls it will crank and crank and if it restarts it shudders and dies. May do it 2 times may do it 50 but eventually you can get it to restart and may not have an issue for the next couple hours. Ordered a computer of flagship1 got to today so hopefully my issue will be resolved

      I had the same thing happen on my 97 and also it's just now starting to act up with dead batteries after sitting at night and the airbag light comes on , the rear defrost light stays on and heater blower after key is clear out of ignition, there's a shorting out or crunchy noise from around the glovebox or firewall, a new rattling noise sounds to be coming from under center console during rough idle or when shutting down the engine or on startup I still can't find , plus now a loud thumping or popping noise in front end when turning left or hitting bumps that's gotten worse over last week, I was actually thinking 🤔 should I sell this thing? But I like the Jeep when all is well and I hear so much good about the engines , mines a 97 with about 155,000 miles , any help besides the major help of this video already I do appreciate, thanks all

Which was exact same case with my dad's jeep same year and model so just wanted to share my experience with other people having this issue to do what others here have suggested and that is to remove throttle body and replace gasket if you are removing it for cleaning and most important idle air control remove that from throttle body for cleaning as well

    Hey there I have a 95 inline 6 and it's cutting off after a few minutes in traffic, or at a stop sign. I've also heard of backing to screws out or replacing the screws with sheet metal screws.
