XJ is great for a teenager. They're inexpensive, engine hard to destroy, it sits up a little bit, fairly safe, 4 wheel drive, parts are easy to find and if there's a fender bender, it still looks good!
My wife and I rebuilt her 2000 XJ AC system last summer. AC works, Heating works, and it took two full days for us to get it done. We had extract the entire dashboard. But it was worth it all. Greetings from Arizona.
Here is another very common problem with most Jeep Cherokee's 97/01 CRUSE CONTROL NOT WORKING along with FRONT HEATING/AIR CONDITIONER VENTS IN DASH. The Fix is a vacuum leak most times located in the vacuum lines running along the passenger side fender, track and touch them all to make sure they are all in tack. You will notice you can get heat from your Defrosters or shooting to the floor but the main vents in the dash don't work. (Vacuum Leak is the fix ). It's not enough to put your Check Engine light on but is enough to stop your (Cruse Control and main Heater/Air Conditioner Vents from working).Owned my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 for at least 6 yr's. One Hour on You Tube and found and fixed the problem. You can find more answers on You Tube then you can get from any Mechanic.
mines a '98. only rust is the suspension which is being changed and lifted 3" next week. my intake manifold is solid, heads are good, all new pumps and hoses, prob gonna do a new clutch fan soon. overall my jeep is solid, i love this thing!
I've had 5 XJ's over the years. Every single one eventually had problems with either the Throttle Position Sensor, Idle air control valve, Crank position sensor .....or more frustrating is if it's the wire leading to one of those sensors. All of these things can lead to stalling , misfiring , dying out or the feeling like you're running out of gas upon acceleration. I've put over 200k on 5 of these since 97 ...all have the same problems. Don't forget driver side door, window wont go up...you have to hit it hard with your elbow, then it goes up. Fix it or leave up up and cracked . And as you asid, rocker panels, floor pans and rear lower quarter panels . Eventually around 270k you end up with a vehicle falling apart around a still solid running engine and tranny ...lol
Just bought the 16 year old her first car. She wanted an XJ and nothing else, so I looked for over a year and found one I liked down in the Portland Oregon area (186k, bone stock, dark green, limited, 2 owner vehicle). I have been tinkering on it over the past couple months. Did all fluids and filters, greasing, dropped the rear drive shaft (slip joint/u-joints), replaced tranny mount, and a few other interior fixes. The thing isn't mint, but its so clean...I swear we have gotten stopped 5 times since we picked it up by people who either want to buy it or talk to us about it. She loves it, and I hope to keep it running solid and taken care of. Thank you for your comment! Anyone know anything about the AC systems? I have confirmed clutch power and low pressure switch function. Also dash AC power as well. I think its just low on R134? But where is the leak? Might just have a shop look at it.
Great video there! I have my first Jeep and it's a '99 XJ and I love that darn thing. You're correct about many of those issues, I've experienced them myself. I pretty much got it all taken care of but you never know when something new creeps up. Everyone I know has Wranglers but I won't sell my hooked up XJ for anything.
Hell yeah! From a fellow WV boy, just bought a 98 Jeep Cherokee for $800, oil pressure does the samething and manifold is loud as hell but 290,000 miles she’s still smooth as butter, no floorpan or frame rust just a small spot on the door
I've been on a spree... last Dec I bought 2 98 xj's. 1 was beautiful, bad engine. Other one... I had to stuff a screw in the rear passenger brake line to make it home it was so gone rusty, but Good engine. So an engine swap later we have a mint 98 xj for 2500 invested plus fluids, basics, and a tire. (Had 3? New tires, 1 old spent Goodyear wrangler). Now I'm digging into the piggy bank to put all new towing shocks all around, as well as fresh steering and "proper" size 215 tires. All this funness because this month I bought another 98 xj scrapper, and a fairly cherry (for the dollars) 4.0 98 ZJ. That all was another 1700, but the ZJ doesn't need the donor yet. It needed a fuel pump and tank clean, lol green crap. And probably a computer because it has a random stall, and no codes. It has fresh plugs, coil, and checked wires. Still need to pull rotor cap and clean grounds, will go to flagship1 for the puter after that, and a few moar idle hours 😅. It is RANDOM. ZJ is also getting a fresh set of factory shocks, steering kit, and the 235 tires from the XJ. Lol. Always some odds and ends im forgetting. And all this to avoid buying 2 cherry late 90's 4 runners for 15+grand+repairs. Lol I'm just tired of having things go wrong I can't fix with the plethora of tools I already have, income jeep 4.0 for the win. 😂
Ball joints are also a huge one for these Jeeps, especially the Death Wobble being caused by it. There's just not enough camber in the wheels the way they used to make them. I've definitely dealt with the fan clutch problem and replaced my oil sending unit. I just recently ran into a coolant leak caused by my thermostat that I thought was my overflow reservoir.
@Cherokee Ronnie. Hi Ronnie, I've got a 1993 Cherokee Country. With a 4.0l, auto trans & 4x4. Came out of Colorado Springs, Colorado, where evidentially they do not use salt on the roads in the winter because this XJ has Zero Rust & I'll say that again, this XJ has Zero Rust... I bought it, September 14th, 2020. So if my math is correct, I've put 721 miles on her at about 7 months to the day. The exhaust manifold, pipes all new from 2019 when the Jeep was last driven. I did notice a lot of new bolts on the engine so I am still going with the previous owner did rebuild, or had it rebuilt while he owned it. He added a 3'' lift & also put a set of 15'' to 16'' rims on it along with some nice tires but since I have the original 15'' Jeep Cherokee rims, with the set of tires, I'm gonna try them on the Jeep because I don't need those aggressive tires, plus between the poor gas mileage & the ride, I'd just like to see how much better the ride will be. As I mentioned above, there is zero rust on the entire vehicle. What would you suggest using to spray on the under-body? I'm going to do that this summer so it doesn't see any road salt the way that it is so with that, I'll wait to hear back from you. Great video & thanks for posting it.. MD.............
Good Job! I have had Cherokees since 1988 and Jeep never solved the common problems with them and when Chrysler got them it went down hill from there! Exhaust manifold, rear main seal are the big ones.
Jeep offered a upgrade for the header that cracks, it’s because the inline six increases and decreases in length as it gets hot and cools cracking the header. the upgrade should have metal expansion baffles at the number 1 and 6 cylinder on the header, allowing it to expand and contract without cracking the header... it’s an easy fix
I have a 2001 Cherokee and I had the problem with the oil pressure gauge you describe. It would be zero sometimes and jump around erratically sometimes. Replaced the sending unit and that fixed it.
Oil Pressure Sending Unit.... That has got to be one of the issue shared by most XL or any Jeep with a 4.0L engine. On our 98 XJ we had, since it was my Wife's XJ, she'd take it in to the local dealership religiously. I remember the Sending Unit would show 5lbs at an idle & 15-20lbs while driving it. Something I already knew was Jeep probably had millions of those suckers in stock, just like the faulty Cam/Crank Sensors on the 2000 F-250 Power Strokes, mine went out 5 times before it was out of warranty. Twice after 100k miles @ $179.00 installed. After a quad-zillion complaints, they finally came out with an updated one, fixing the issue. It also came with a price difference. The old one ranged from $79.00 to $129.00. The updated one came in at $19.00 to $29.00 at any auto parts store.. Imagine that, one that worked & at a quarter of the price... So with all that said, as long as my 1993 XJ w/4.0L isn't knocking, it's the Sending Unit...
Informative video my friend. I just got my 99 xj 215k miles and runs like a dream no rust whatsoever. It does need an oil change heavily and also was wondering what that little rattling sound was. I figured it was the manifold.
One reason my exhaust manifold cracked was the engine mounts were worn out. If you haven't changed them inspect them. They looked good from on top but once I took them out you could see they were all rotted. The rear one will put stress on it and cause them to die an early death.
My first jeep was a 99 XJ with a 4.0 unfortunately the motor was on it’s way up when I got it and eventually it blew. Now I’m on a 98 XJ and it has a knocking sound that seems to be coming from the front of the transmission and it’s really bad when it idles. Other than that it runs great. Love the body style of the 94-01 XJs and they do hold up really well
Jeep xjs have lots of trouble with the emmission control lines that go toward the fuel tank these lines get rusted holes in them and your engine computer says. Small vaccum leak they have to be smoke tested to find which line has the hole in it otherwise your check engine light burns all the time
Have a 99 cherokee 4x4 4.0 that stops dead with no crank after rolling to a stop. Fuse 10 , a 20 amp, in the passengers side kick panel fuse box is blown. I replace the fuse and it starts and run ok. Why would jeep put an engine killing fuse where a wet boot could ground such an important fuse? Would think those fuses are in the engine compartment.

I own a 2000 xj that I got from a next door neighbor that had 57,000 original miles on it and so far (Knock on wood ) I've had no problems with it, but I am curious about one thing, I've not owned a cherokee but I did have a Grand wagoneer, and it turned real easy the steering on the xj takes a bit of muscle at times to turn definitely can't palm it, there's plenty of steering fluid in it, is this typical??
I live in Florida, if you have your cooling system clean and everything there, it won't run that hot. Even in the middle of summer, mine never gets above 220 and I have to be running it hard off road. I have a new stock fan clutch and I made sure to put a shroud on it. I also have ac. You can get these to run at a decent temp.
Bro, the rear springs are crappy also. I'm going to do bastard packs on my two 'XJ's next year. Mine is starting to sag in the rear a little. My '97 more than my '96. Rear leaf springs! LMFAO. And they used those 1800s technology into THIS century. Look it up... horse drawn carriages had leaf springs of the day. Hence the term "carriage." It would "carry." Any brand of vehicle past 1970s that didn't need to carry a thousand pounds in the back (like a hard working pickup truck) that still had rear leaf springs were moron brands. Sure Jeeps NOW have rear coil springs. 50 year later than they could have and should have.
I just bought a 2001 Cherokee Limited. I think mine is in a little better shape but thanks for pointing out the weak spots. I am an old man that got his start as a diesel mechanic. I have been around the 199-232-258 and 4.0l throughout my life. They are a well built engine. I have no coolant loss and good heat coming from the heater. If I eventually get a cracked head is there a better replacement for it. This is going to be my last fun vehicle and want to do quite a few mods to it. I will check out your videos and shoot a few of my own. Thanks for featuring the Cherokee. I had a 90 for a short period of time. I wish I had not traded it off. Dumb!
I have a pretty bad trans leak on my 98 xj, I've been told to check the trans cooler lines and the pan gasket, any recommendations from anyone who's had the same problem? Since I picked it up at the beginning of this weeks I've done the leaf springs, brakes, and stabilizer bar bushings, it's a clean jeep with very little rust surprisingly I'm trying to get it back to its prime but every time I replace something I find something else that needs replaced lmao.
I live in southern NJ I have an xj with 203300 miles on it, its doesn't have a rod knock but it does tick a lot. I'm wondering if I can make it to northern Mississippi after I tune it up for the long trip
I've got a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited - 4.7L V8 - it is beautiful condition, but I can't get it to start. Turn the key on, no gauges move-- it doesn't show fuel level or anything. Went to a fuel station, locked it twice with the FOB, went inside & paid for the gas, filled it up, came out, and it turned over and over but wouldn't actually catch and run... had to tow it home via wrecker. Hasn't run since. It acts like the anti-theft system has disabled it. It does NOT run for one or two seconds after starting and then turn off like so many others. Running out of ideas...
I've found that most of the time the reason that the exhaust manifolds crack is because someone did a poor job of fitting a new exhaust system and it puts too much pressure pushing or pulling on the manifold flange. I've got a 97 with the original manifold and 265,000 miles. But I just bought another 97 with 155,000 and the previous owner just put a new exhaust from the manifold to the tail pipe one week before selling and the manifold is cracked now just two weeks later. Just a poor fit.

At least there, all the people replying to the ''Type Of Oil'' comment give you some good choices. Plus they'll usually give a personal experience with their XJ & what they went to & Why they use what they use. It's always a good idea to see what these (usually guys) have to say on the matter.... im looking at a 2000 for faily cheap. he said it has a missfire and he took it to a shop they said it was a coil and also the 4wd linkage is loose. had 237k think its a good buy? he was told the motor has about 150k but you know how people are. i wanna get into jeeps for a while now. make a cheap good looking rig for a daily/alittle two track ridding and what ever else nothing like deep deep mud. just a fun jeep to drive.
My 00' XJ had a heater core issue TWICE.. I ended up replacing it the 2nd time for free cause it was under warranty, but I'm thinking that water or debris can get behind the firewall into the heater core box and cause the engine to overheat..
I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem but for me when I’m driving it starts to make this pretty loud buzzing/humming sounds but when idle it doesn’t. I think it’s coming from the engine bay but I have no idea. Any opinions what it might be ?
I guess I got lucky... I got a 2000 xj.... no problems....well... overheat I guess, fixed with a new radiator and a 180F thermometer... oil gauge will max out when cold... engine heats up and it's good after a reset, umm 4.0 tick fixed with full synthetic rotella oil... reminds me of an oil change when i hear lifter tick again... usually around 4000 miles... umm... other than that..... it's the only car I've owned that will survive my bull shit abuse off road and take me across the country... literally... California Mojave desert... got in some trouble with sand chop from wind... soft and couldn't stop... so bad I ripped off my overflow hose for radiator and broke my fan shroud... replaced then drove it to Louisiana.... then back... then back... annnndd back again... bout to take a trailer home with it, 160,000 on the jeep now... all stock... run it till it dies... expecting 300,000
bought my 2000 XJ in 2004. Have kept up with regular maintenance. Still runs GREAT. Nothing other than usual worn parts. coming up on 200k, replacing nerf bars, brush bar, new trac bar, still runs great, looks great. still get lots of admiring comments on it. paint job still good, also. I love my XJ, best money ever spent on a vehicle.
2000 4.0 pistons thin from wristpin into oil ring land. Seen many crack, chrysler done this on porpose so they could discontinue prehaps the best engine ever made. Order 96 pistons when rebuilding.

A lot of the problems come from people beating the snot out of them never cleaning or maintaining them , My 01 has 167 k on it and looks & runs like new ! Well better than new I take extra care of it.
i'll add a couple. the plastic piece they put between the window and the raising unit. Why would you put plastic in the most stressful joint of your operation? $$$$$ for the dealerships. Same with that relay [for the electric fan] that's behind the passenger headlight and bumper. If you don't cut a hole into your well, you have to remove the bumper! It's like that cheap pipe on the exhaust. It's almost like they built in failures.
The absolute DUMBEST design of an XJ was an oil filter above a starter. I will add that I own a 2000 xj and a 2006 tacoma. I was stranded more times than I can count in the XJ but never once has my truck let me down. The only reason I still have the Jeep is Im scared to put money in it because the resell is horrible and my Tacoma will outlive me😂
Have a 2001 Cherokee. 4.0l. Feels like cylinders are misfiring but told it could be more and need a possible new engine. Which is crazy. It’s just not running smooth and jumpy.
Good video gave some other things to look at on my 98 I've had it since it was a baby LoL. When I first got it I put on a thick undercoating cause I was in upstate NY, it's about time to redo. That said it just started giving me a problem where I can't get pickup when I step hard on the peddle, and it won't go over 60 with the peddle to the floor n in 4th or 5th gear. Any suggestions?
Hey I have a few questions I just bought a 97 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4... It sounds like the catalytic converter. Well taking my daughter to school the jeep stalled out amd wouldn't start back up and sparks were coming from my exhaust. Do you think its the cat amd the fuel sending unit? Or a plugged filter? Jeep does fine on flat ground.
I had a 96 Grand Cherokee Limited with Quadra-Trac 4WD and it had the front CV axles in it, no feedback from the front end when turning and such...my current 98 Grand Cherokee has U-Joints up front, when you turn with it you feel a lot of feedback from the U-Joints...I'd stick with the CV axles IMO, much smoother operating and no steering feedback especially if you have a full time 4WD setup...I have selec-trac in my 98 ZJ and in full time mode you get the U-Joint Feedback, happens in part-time mode too, but usually in conditions that warrant the use of part-time mode you don't notice it very much. Keep your CV axles.
Got a 1996 has a singing problem were it starts runs then will stall out. Won't start back over. Wait a day it will start up then as soon as I lift foot off gas shuts off. Then it will start stay running all day until I shut it off then no start again what could this be. Thought it was my belt cause last time I tighten it it ran great . I have a new belt now and problems back. Any ideas. And all my dome lights arevon now and won't go off

Great video - thank you. Unfortunately it doesn't cover my issue, namely a "spare" pipe that we found dangling in the engine bay! It looks like it plugs into something, and the other end had what looks like a pressure valve of sorts! Its about a metre long, and is covered in a white material which i think is to heat proof it in the engine bay! Anyone have any idea where this pipe could fit please?
I don't know how long you been messing with Jeeps but everyone that I ever knew that had that Cherokee always had an issue with the Anti-Theft and ECM computer just shut off leave it for half an hour to turn right back on and drive down the road
That is not an Oil Pressure Gauge from a 97/01 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It's from an Older Model, check for yourself. The best thing to do is Buy a Jeep that has not been off road ed. Chrysler made 3 Million of these Jeeps, it's not that hard to find one that (has not been Off Road ed).Also as we all know most Jeep XJ's are set up with a part time 4 wheel drive system / Transfer Case not set up for off roading.
You will probably pay more for one that is bone stock with decent miles on it, but at the same time I'd rather pay more and get something that someone hasn't cobbled together and/or beat the crap out of.
This--- especially once you have a lift, or some heavier tires. That was a shock my first time taking my Jeep on a road trip, damn near shook me off the road.
Braulio Mata if it's stock, you don't have to worry about it really. if you do have a wobble (on a stock), replace the steering stabilizer and shocks and you should be fine.
that steering stabilizer [unlike shocks on the chassis] will delay when it goes bad. so it takes an extra second for the steering to catch up to your movement. very dangerous.

The inline 6 4litre with the Aisin Warner (Toyota) automatic transmission can be a match made in Heaven as long as you take care of them with regular maintenance.
I have a 2001 xj that misses bad when its in the heat soak condition it will miss for about 2 minutes like its vapor locked the jeep never runs hot i insulated the injector lines it didnt hekp

T.J. Karl sounds like it could be your crankshaft position sensor. When you turn the key to the on position, you should hear the fuel pump run for a second before you try to crank. When my CPS went out, the fuel pump did not do this.
I've got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport. It won't start. Computer says ignition coil, I pulled the ignition coil packs out which is all in one unit. Now the clip with four wires in it have no power going to them so there ain't any power going to the ignition coil. How do I get power to those wires and where do they go???
The tailgate latch problem many people are whining about happens when the gas struts become weak. Typically starts showing up after 5+ years in the colder months when the strut pressure is slightly lower (Boyles Law - look it up). Replace the struts and the latch works just fine. In the closed position the struts force the heavy metal door (‘98 onwards) up and takes pressure off the latch. Glass fiber doors on older models were lighter, but had a reputation for failing at the hinges.
Tail light HELP! 1999 Cherokee Sport 4.0L straight 6 manual 4x4 4dr driver side tail light not working. So far I've changed the bulb, changed the fuses, changed the housing and wiring harness still no tail light Brake, signal and back up lights all work properly. multimeter tester shows no "juice" to the tail light socket only (the top socket black rubber socket housing) ANY IDEAS ON WHAT THE ISSUE COULD BE? ??

I got a 99 xj and haven't used it since the check engine light is on. the code is p0171 and haven't been able to find out what's wrong with. It shakes a bit when its on. Any ideas as to what it might be?
Awsome video man. Why would anyone run 5-20 oil that's just plain stupid it's not what it calls for and not work a fraction better mileage you might get running it. 10-30 is what every XJ I've ever owned has called for all 8 of them. I can't speak for the inline 4 or the rare V-6 in very early models but you won't find a 4.0 that calls for 5-20 and if someone does I'd love to see that.
I changed my oil sending unit already and my oil pressure drops from 40 to about 10 or so after like an hour of drive. You think it might be the oil pump ?
Dont forget bad rod bearings on thousands of the 98,s ours went at 64,000 ,to could hear it faintly from new but some bought off judge threw out a class action suit. Will ever buy another jeep or chrysler again.

I own a ‘01. No rust, no CEL, everything works, heads checked. I do have a little seat tear. I love my XJ.

Mine a white 01 and the only rust it has is from when I used a off brand fender flare kit 🤣. But even so rust is easily removable
Mines a 2000 clean as fuck. No rust or dents, interior pretty much spotless except some tears on the driver seat love it.

Just bought the 16 year old her first car. She wanted an XJ and nothing else, so I looked for over a year and found one I liked down in the Portland Oregon area (186k, bone stock, dark green, limited, 2 owner vehicle). I have been tinkering on it over the past couple months. Did all fluids and filters, greasing, dropped the rear drive shaft (slip joint/u-joints), replaced tranny mount, and a few other interior fixes. The thing isn't mint, but its so clean...I swear we have gotten stopped 5 times since we picked it up by people who either want to buy it or talk to us about it. She loves it, and I hope to keep it running solid and taken care of.

Anyone know anything about the AC systems? I have confirmed clutch power and low pressure switch function. Also dash AC power as well. I think its just low on R134? But where is the leak? Might just have a shop look at it.

Great video there! I have my first Jeep and it's a '99 XJ and I love that darn thing. You're correct about many of those issues, I've experienced them myself. I pretty much got it all taken care of but you never know when something new creeps up. Everyone I know has Wranglers but I won't sell my hooked up XJ for anything.
Hell yeah! From a fellow WV boy, just bought a 98 Jeep Cherokee for $800, oil pressure does the samething and manifold is loud as hell but 290,000 miles she’s still smooth as butter, no floorpan or frame rust just a small spot on the door
Just bought a 93 Cherokee for 1500 but it has a 3 inch lift and 31s it has 274k miles but runs great
I've been on a spree... last Dec I bought 2 98 xj's. 1 was beautiful, bad engine. Other one... I had to stuff a screw in the rear passenger brake line to make it home it was so gone rusty, but Good engine. So an engine swap later we have a mint 98 xj for 2500 invested plus fluids, basics, and a tire. (Had 3? New tires, 1 old spent Goodyear wrangler). Now I'm digging into the piggy bank to put all new towing shocks all around, as well as fresh steering and "proper" size 215 tires. All this funness because this month I bought another 98 xj scrapper, and a fairly cherry (for the dollars) 4.0 98 ZJ. That all was another 1700, but the ZJ doesn't need the donor yet. It needed a fuel pump and tank clean, lol green crap. And probably a computer because it has a random stall, and no codes. It has fresh plugs, coil, and checked wires. Still need to pull rotor cap and clean grounds, will go to flagship1 for the puter after that, and a few moar idle hours 😅. It is RANDOM. ZJ is also getting a fresh set of factory shocks, steering kit, and the 235 tires from the XJ. Lol. Always some odds and ends im forgetting. And all this to avoid buying 2 cherry late 90's 4 runners for 15+grand+repairs. Lol I'm just tired of having things go wrong I can't fix with the plethora of tools I already have, income jeep 4.0 for the win. 😂

Ball joints are also a huge one for these Jeeps, especially the Death Wobble being caused by it. There's just not enough camber in the wheels the way they used to make them.
I've definitely dealt with the fan clutch problem and replaced my oil sending unit. I just recently ran into a coolant leak caused by my thermostat that I thought was my overflow reservoir.
@Cherokee Ronnie. Hi Ronnie, I've got a 1993 Cherokee Country. With a 4.0l, auto trans & 4x4. Came out of Colorado Springs, Colorado, where evidentially they do not use salt on the roads in the winter because this XJ has Zero Rust & I'll say that again, this XJ has Zero Rust... I bought it, September 14th, 2020. So if my math is correct, I've put 721 miles on her at about 7 months to the day.
The exhaust manifold, pipes all new from 2019 when the Jeep was last driven. I did notice a lot of new bolts on the engine so I am still going with the previous owner did rebuild, or had it rebuilt while he owned it. He added a 3'' lift & also put a set of 15'' to 16'' rims on it along with some nice tires but since I have the original 15'' Jeep Cherokee rims, with the set of tires, I'm gonna try them on the Jeep because I don't need those aggressive tires, plus between the poor gas mileage & the ride, I'd just like to see how much better the ride will be.
As I mentioned above, there is zero rust on the entire vehicle. What would you suggest using to spray on the under-body? I'm going to do that this summer so it doesn't see any road salt the way that it is so with that, I'll wait to hear back from you. Great video & thanks for posting it.. MD.............
Good Job! I have had Cherokees since 1988 and Jeep never solved the common problems with them and when Chrysler got them it went down hill from there! Exhaust manifold, rear main seal are the big ones.
The tilt steering wheel cable is a very easy fix. Gibson makes a great exhaust manifold alternative. No more cracks and leaks.

Jeep offered a upgrade for the header that cracks, it’s because the inline six increases and decreases in length as it gets hot and cools cracking the header. the upgrade should have metal expansion baffles at the number 1 and 6 cylinder on the header, allowing it to expand and contract without cracking the header... it’s an easy fix
I have a 2001 Cherokee and I had the problem with the oil pressure gauge you describe. It would be zero sometimes and jump around erratically sometimes. Replaced the sending unit and that fixed it.
Oil Pressure Sending Unit.... That has got to be one of the issue shared by most XL or any Jeep with a 4.0L engine. On our 98 XJ we had, since it was my Wife's XJ, she'd take it in to the local dealership religiously. I remember the Sending Unit would show 5lbs at an idle & 15-20lbs while driving it. Something I already knew was Jeep probably had millions of those suckers in stock, just like the faulty Cam/Crank Sensors on the 2000 F-250 Power Strokes, mine went out 5 times before it was out of warranty. Twice after 100k miles @ $179.00 installed. After a quad-zillion complaints, they finally came out with an updated one, fixing the issue. It also came with a price difference. The old one ranged from $79.00 to $129.00. The updated one came in at $19.00 to $29.00 at any auto parts store.. Imagine that, one that worked & at a quarter of the price... So with all that said, as long as my 1993 XJ w/4.0L isn't knocking, it's the Sending Unit...
Informative video my friend. I just got my 99 xj 215k miles and runs like a dream no rust whatsoever. It does need an oil change heavily and also was wondering what that little rattling sound was. I figured it was the manifold.
Mine doing pooping noise does your do that.
One reason my exhaust manifold cracked was the engine mounts were worn out. If you haven't changed them inspect them. They looked good from on top but once I took them out you could see they were all rotted. The rear one will put stress on it and cause them to die an early death.

My first jeep was a 99 XJ with a 4.0 unfortunately the motor was on it’s way up when I got it and eventually it blew. Now I’m on a 98 XJ and it has a knocking sound that seems to be coming from the front of the transmission and it’s really bad when it idles. Other than that it runs great. Love the body style of the 94-01 XJs and they do hold up really well
Jeep xjs have lots of trouble with the emmission control lines that go toward the fuel tank these lines get rusted holes in them and your engine computer says. Small vaccum leak they have to be smoke tested to find which line has the hole in it otherwise your check engine light burns all the time

Good point about people overlooking the fan clutch. You also need to make sure you have your fan shroud installed as well.
2000 Jeep Cherokee has both a Clutch and an electric fan both should be in good operating condition.
Have a 99 cherokee 4x4 4.0 that stops dead with no crank after rolling to a stop. Fuse 10 , a 20 amp, in the passengers side kick panel fuse box is blown. I replace the fuse and it starts and run ok. Why would jeep put an engine killing fuse where a wet boot could ground such an important fuse? Would think those fuses are in the engine compartment.
Hi ronnie, i have a problem with my 99 xj. I have the p0740 code, the TCC solenoid i already dropped the pan, drain and fill, replaced the solenoids but i still have cel. What could be the problem? I also have a new NSS

I own a 2000 xj that I got from a next door neighbor that had 57,000 original miles on it and so far (Knock on wood ) I've had no problems with it, but I am curious about one thing, I've not owned a cherokee but I did have a Grand wagoneer, and it turned real easy the steering on the xj takes a bit of muscle at times to turn definitely can't palm it, there's plenty of steering fluid in it, is this typical??
I live in Florida, if you have your cooling system clean and everything there, it won't run that hot. Even in the middle of summer, mine never gets above 220 and I have to be running it hard off road. I have a new stock fan clutch and I made sure to put a shroud on it. I also have ac. You can get these to run at a decent temp.
95 XJ my problem is I run it like a bat out of hell daily I don't cut it no slack lol

Bro, the rear springs are crappy also. I'm going to do bastard packs on my two 'XJ's next year. Mine is starting to sag in the rear a little. My '97 more than my '96. The '97 gets wheeled more than the '96 so it's going to get the pack's first. Great video as always. Keep on keeping on bro. OlllllllO

J. W. I did that to mine, i used leafs out of a nissan exterra, i think it was an '06, fit in perfectly and raised it up about 3" in the rear

And they used those 1800s technology into THIS century. Look it up... horse drawn carriages had leaf springs of the day. Hence the term "carriage." It would "carry."
Any brand of vehicle past 1970s that didn't need to carry a thousand pounds in the back (like a hard working pickup truck) that still had rear leaf springs were moron brands. Sure Jeeps NOW have rear coil springs. 50 year later than they could have and should have.
I just bought a 2001 Cherokee Limited. I think mine is in a little better shape but thanks for pointing out the weak spots. I am an old man that got his start as a diesel mechanic. I have been around the 199-232-258 and 4.0l throughout my life. They are a well built engine.
I have no coolant loss and good heat coming from the heater. If I eventually get a cracked head is there a better replacement for it. This is going to be my last fun vehicle and want to do quite a few mods to it. I will check out your videos and shoot a few of my own.

The tupy head is a bullet proof head and great replacement for your 0331. I think the 02 and 03 wranglers had the 0331 too
if the head ever cracks get a clearwater head that’s what i have on my jeep after the engine was rebuilt

I have a pretty bad trans leak on my 98 xj, I've been told to check the trans cooler lines and the pan gasket, any recommendations from anyone who's had the same problem? Since I picked it up at the beginning of this weeks I've done the leaf springs, brakes, and stabilizer bar bushings, it's a clean jeep with very little rust surprisingly I'm trying to get it back to its prime but every time I replace something I find something else that needs replaced lmao.
I live in southern NJ I have an xj with 203300 miles on it, its doesn't have a rod knock but it does tick a lot. I'm wondering if I can make it to northern Mississippi after I tune it up for the long trip

I've got a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited - 4.7L V8 - it is beautiful condition, but I can't get it to start. Turn the key on, no gauges move-- it doesn't show fuel level or anything. Went to a fuel station, locked it twice with the FOB, went inside & paid for the gas, filled it up, came out, and it turned over and over but wouldn't actually catch and run... had to tow it home via wrecker. Hasn't run since. It acts like the anti-theft system has disabled it. It does NOT run for one or two seconds after starting and then turn off like so many others. Running out of ideas...

I've found that most of the time the reason that the exhaust manifolds crack is because someone did a poor job of fitting a new exhaust system and it puts too much pressure pushing or pulling on the manifold flange. I've got a 97 with the original manifold and 265,000 miles. But I just bought another 97 with 155,000 and the previous owner just put a new exhaust from the manifold to the tail pipe one week before selling and the manifold is cracked now just two weeks later. Just a poor fit.

At least there, all the people replying to the ''Type Of Oil'' comment give you some good choices. Plus they'll usually give a personal experience with their XJ & what they went to & Why they use what they use. It's always a good idea to see what these (usually guys) have to say on the matter.... My biggest problem with my 98 is that it’s 23 years old. Rust is a constant battle for me. Wish I could get a replacement unibody frame/body.

im looking at a 2000 for faily cheap. he said it has a missfire and he took it to a shop they said it was a coil and also the 4wd linkage is loose. had 237k think its a good buy? he was told the motor has about 150k but you know how people are. i wanna get into jeeps for a while now. make a cheap good looking rig for a daily/alittle two track ridding and what ever else nothing like deep deep mud. just a fun jeep to drive.
My 00' XJ had a heater core issue TWICE.. I ended up replacing it the 2nd time for free cause it was under warranty, but I'm thinking that water or debris can get behind the firewall into the heater core box and cause the engine to overheat..
You probably needed a new radiator and complete flush. If your radiator is rusty, all that crap will go into your new heater core
I have a 97 Cherokee se. Have problems with heat,replace head,thermostat. System seems ok flushed with water no clogs.
I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem but for me when I’m driving it starts to make this pretty loud buzzing/humming sounds but when idle it doesn’t. I think it’s coming from the engine bay but I have no idea. Any opinions what it might be ?
I guess I got lucky... I got a 2000 xj.... no problems....well... overheat I guess, fixed with a new radiator and a 180F thermometer... oil gauge will max out when cold... engine heats up and it's good after a reset, umm 4.0 tick fixed with full synthetic rotella oil... reminds me of an oil change when i hear lifter tick again... usually around 4000 miles... umm... other than that..... it's the only car I've owned that will survive my bull shit abuse off road and take me across the country... literally... California Mojave desert... got in some trouble with sand chop from wind... soft and couldn't stop... so bad I ripped off my overflow hose for radiator and broke my fan shroud... replaced then drove it to Louisiana.... then back... then back... annnndd back again... bout to take a trailer home with it, 160,000 on the jeep now... all stock... run it till it dies... expecting 300,000

Smae here 2000 xj with 258,605 on original driveline, holds great oil pressure and runs amazing for almost 260k miles, and it will go through anything
bought my 2000 XJ in 2004. Have kept up with regular maintenance. Still runs GREAT. Nothing other than usual worn parts. coming up on 200k, replacing nerf bars, brush bar, new trac bar, still runs great, looks great. still get lots of admiring comments on it. paint job still good, also. I love my XJ, best money ever spent on a vehicle.
I bought my 2000 XJ in 2010 . Oil press guage maxes out . Temp guage goes up and down .very difficult to start some times. Please help.
Keep in mind "All" doesnt apply to all. Don't have any of these problems. 2000 XJ Sport 136k.

2000 4.0 pistons thin from wristpin into oil ring land. Seen many crack, chrysler done this on porpose so they could discontinue prehaps the best engine ever made. Order 96 pistons when rebuilding.

A lot of the problems come from people beating the snot out of them never cleaning or maintaining them , My 01 has 167 k on it and looks & runs like new ! Well better than new I take extra care of it.
i'll add a couple. the plastic piece they put between the window and the raising unit. Why would you put plastic in the most stressful joint of your operation? $$$$$ for the dealerships.
Same with that relay [for the electric fan] that's behind the passenger headlight and bumper. If you don't cut a hole into your well, you have to remove the bumper!
It's like that cheap pipe on the exhaust. It's almost like they built in failures.
If you need clutch fan overheat help, buy a Grand Cherokee fan clutch you will instantly hear the difference
The absolute DUMBEST design of an XJ was an oil filter above a starter. I will add that I own a 2000 xj and a 2006 tacoma. I was stranded more times than I can count in the XJ but never once has my truck let me down. The only reason I still have the Jeep is Im scared to put money in it because the resell is horrible and my Tacoma will outlive me😂
The Toyota doesn't even compare to the Xj.The Toyota suspension is junk and it sucks off-road and it will not outlast a 4.0.You must've had a bad one.

Have a 2001 Cherokee. 4.0l. Feels like cylinders are misfiring but told it could be more and need a possible new engine. Which is crazy. It’s just not running smooth and jumpy.
exhaust cracks are caused from worn engine mounts. the engine wobbles and shakes and it breaks the exhaust manifold. trans too as well.

Good video gave some other things to look at on my 98 I've had it since it was a baby LoL. When I first got it I put on a thick undercoating cause I was in upstate NY, it's about time to redo.
That said it just started giving me a problem where I can't get pickup when I step hard on the peddle, and it won't go over 60 with the peddle to the floor n in 4th or 5th gear. Any suggestions?
Hey I have a few questions I just bought a 97 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4... It sounds like the catalytic converter. Well taking my daughter to school the jeep stalled out amd wouldn't start back up and sparks were coming from my exhaust. Do you think its the cat amd the fuel sending unit? Or a plugged filter? Jeep does fine on flat ground.

I just got a 97 TSI I know ur not a Grand Cherokee guy but got it real cheap only problem is the cv boot thinking of going to u-joint any thoughts?
I had a 96 Grand Cherokee Limited with Quadra-Trac 4WD and it had the front CV axles in it, no feedback from the front end when turning and such...my current 98 Grand Cherokee has U-Joints up front, when you turn with it you feel a lot of feedback from the U-Joints...I'd stick with the CV axles IMO, much smoother operating and no steering feedback especially if you have a full time 4WD setup...I have selec-trac in my 98 ZJ and in full time mode you get the U-Joint Feedback, happens in part-time mode too, but usually in conditions that warrant the use of part-time mode you don't notice it very much. Keep your CV axles.
Got a 1996 has a singing problem were it starts runs then will stall out. Won't start back over. Wait a day it will start up then as soon as I lift foot off gas shuts off. Then it will start stay running all day until I shut it off then no start again what could this be. Thought it was my belt cause last time I tighten it it ran great . I have a new belt now and problems back. Any ideas. And all my dome lights arevon now and won't go off

Water pump. The serpentine belt puts a lot of stress on the pulleys, especially the water pump.
Great video - thank you. Unfortunately it doesn't cover my issue, namely a "spare" pipe that we found dangling in the engine bay! It looks like it plugs into something, and the other end had what looks like a pressure valve of sorts! Its about a metre long, and is covered in a white material which i think is to heat proof it in the engine bay! Anyone have any idea where this pipe could fit please?

I don't know how long you been messing with Jeeps but everyone that I ever knew that had that Cherokee always had an issue with the Anti-Theft and ECM computer just shut off leave it for half an hour to turn right back on and drive down the road

That is not an Oil Pressure Gauge from a 97/01 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It's from an Older Model, check for yourself. The best thing to do is Buy a Jeep that has not been off road ed. Chrysler made 3 Million of these Jeeps, it's not that hard to find one that (has not been Off Road ed).Also as we all know most Jeep XJ's are set up with a part time 4 wheel drive system / Transfer Case not set up for off roading.
You will probably pay more for one that is bone stock with decent miles on it, but at the same time I'd rather pay more and get something that someone hasn't cobbled together and/or beat the crap out of.
Don't forget about the death wobble. lol
This--- especially once you have a lift, or some heavier tires. That was a shock my first time taking my Jeep on a road trip, damn near shook me off the road.
Braulio Mata if it's stock, you don't have to worry about it really. if you do have a wobble (on a stock), replace the steering stabilizer and shocks and you should be fine.
that steering stabilizer [unlike shocks on the chassis] will delay when it goes bad. so it takes an extra second for the steering to catch up to your movement. very dangerous.
Had many, drove many no death wobble, that stigma attaches to old cj5s with humpers shoed on.

The inline 6 4litre with the Aisin Warner (Toyota) automatic transmission can be a match made in Heaven as long as you take care of them with regular maintenance.

I just picked up a 2000 cherokee. it's definitely got some issues. I'd love to exchange emails with you cherokee Ronnie. I know I'm going to need some help. for starters sometimes it fires right up, other times it will just crank and crank till the battery is dead? ?
T.J. Karl sounds like it could be your crankshaft position sensor. When you turn the key to the on position, you should hear the fuel pump run for a second before you try to crank. When my CPS went out, the fuel pump did not do this.
I've got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport. It won't start. Computer says ignition coil, I pulled the ignition coil packs out which is all in one unit. Now the clip with four wires in it have no power going to them so there ain't any power going to the ignition coil. How do I get power to those wires and where do they go???
The tailgate latch problem many people are whining about happens when the gas struts become weak. Typically starts showing up after 5+ years in the colder months when the strut pressure is slightly lower (Boyles Law - look it up). Replace the struts and the latch works just fine. In the closed position the struts force the heavy metal door (‘98 onwards) up and takes pressure off the latch. Glass fiber doors on older models were lighter, but had a reputation for failing at the hinges.

Roberta Sheridan probably a bad ground. A bad ground can cause some weird things to happen.
My XJ has none of those issues! it is a 1988. 0 rust.
A missing fan shroud will add to overheating problems.

Probably your fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure with a rental kit from your Auto parts store

Awsome video man. Why would anyone run 5-20 oil that's just plain stupid it's not what it calls for and not work a fraction better mileage you might get running it. 10-30 is what every XJ I've ever owned has called for all 8 of them. I can't speak for the inline 4 or the rare V-6 in very early models but you won't find a 4.0 that calls for 5-20 and if someone does I'd love to see that.

I changed my oil sending unit already and my oil pressure drops from 40 to about 10 or so after like an hour of drive. You think it might be the oil pump ?
No, but did you try cleaning the area inside of the engine where the sending unit hooks up using a tobacco pipe cleaner? Maybe some crud there?

Take out the sending unit, turn the key so it cranks once but don’t let it fire. It should spit out some sludge

Dont forget bad rod bearings on thousands of the 98,s ours went at 64,000 ,to could hear it faintly from new but some bought off judge threw out a class action suit. Will ever buy another jeep or chrysler again.
