Before moving to Portugal, we actually lived (on and off) in Spain for two years. But, for several reasons, we still decided to ultimately move to Portugal. Check out this video to find out why!

Portuguese children learn English (UK) from a small age and start to learn a second foreign language in 7th grade like French or Spanish.
I lived for a few years in Spain and my biggest mistake was not to learn the language before I get there. The interactions at the bank, health care and even stores were really challenging.

Portuguese here my hermano. I was actually happy to see this perspective putting our countries so much more close to each other than many people, on both countries, try so hard to differentiate. Portuguese and Spanish, we will always have our rivalries (which basically today translates To Jokes about each other) but in the end of the day we always walk together. And we do have the saying “nuestros hermanos”. We help each other more than we fight. And the Iberian relaxed way of living will always be the envy of other countries. And we have the best holiday destinations in Europe. And the best weather. And we have chorizo

Taxation, stupid socialist politics and corruption sometimes makes me want to pack my bag and move away from Portugal too. I love my country, I really do. But socialism is not allowing this country to stand up to its potential. The worst part is the hopelessness you get from seeing people always vote for the same people. For the past 47 years the political dispute has always been between the socialists (PS) and the social democrats (PSD) alongside with CDS (which are more coservative social democrats) , followed by the communists (PCP) and, in recent years, the progressists from BE. It really isn't that exciting to live in a country where this is our political scenario.
Luckily, we are now starting to see some right wing parties gain some attention. We seem to finally have broken through the social democrat bubble and we are starting to see parties that defend economic liberalism which gives me hope. Maybe one day...

Even Madrid is not so distant from Lisbon or Porto, and if you want to spend the weekend there is quite easy to go. Expect by train, because international rail links are very bad.

Funny thing, everyone loves living in Portugal, how great it is and all that...the truth is, if you're a foreigner, you come to Portugal and you have earnings from outside, yeah it's a great country to live. But being born in Portugal, growing up in Portugal, getting into the workforce, you suddenly have a huge desire to leave this place. Why? Well here we don't live, we try to survive, wages are insanely low, expenses are high, energy is one of the most expensive in the country, corruption from local and main government are huge, let's not talk about housing and rent for obvious reasons, no prospects of making a career and if you are a freelancer oh boy that is where the "fun" begins. So yeah no wonder most portuguese leave the country with or without univ degrees

One thing you should consider is how easily you can integrate into Spain regardless of the language. Unless you want to be part of the ex-pat community you will find it very difficult to integrate with the locals. It's not easy to be accepted and even if you are white from Northern Europe. As a person of color, I would say take vlogger comments with a pinch of salt when it comes to the light criticism they had on Spain. They chose Portugal for good reasons.

Cool to know. I have been traveling to different countries to search out other places to see what else was all out there. Before covid, I was actually in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 then left to Belgium 🇧🇪 then afterwards, I went to France 🇫🇷 for a few weeks before returning back to America. I’m actually getting ready to leave again in ‘2021 to Ireland 🇮🇪 and then staying a few weeks in Italy 🇮🇹. So again, I’m just traveling and checking out different places at the moment; but this was good information to know. I am definitely looking forward to moving out of the U.S. for good. Thanks guys! 🙏

When I visited Lisbon in 2007, someone had written on a wall ”tourists who like to shout, go to Spain”. This sums it up quite nicely what comes to cultural differences between the two. Spanish people can get really loud where as Portuguese are more calm and in that sense remind me of my fellow Finns.
Excellent video! Visited around 50 countries and lived in 8 and sometimes people ask me my favorite country, the answer is still Portugal (even though I have never lived there). I have visited most of the notable cities in Portugal and all the areas. For the following reasons I rate Portugal so high: (1) People - friendly, honest, modest and calm (2) Infrastructure - It was a joy to do roadtrips in Portugal (3) Scenery - a lot to to see in such a small country (4) Safety (5) Weather (6) Prices (7) Children are valued highly in Portugal so it is to my understanding kids are welcome everywhere and there are lot of playgrounds for them

I've visited Spain, and unfortunately had some very negative race-related incidents occur to me (on multiple ocassions) while visiting. Great video ! As someone who has lived in both as well, in terms of diversity, if you are from a different ethnicity group than white, I would say Portugal is a better pick, probably due to its history of colonies and immigration, it feels normal to see black, brown, Indian, Asian people in different walks of society.
I have lived 10 months in Barcelona and sometimes it felt like for a big portion of the population, people of African descent, carribean or other are only people who just landed crossing the Mediterranean on a speedboat... Really felt being followed by security in some shops or supermarkets at time even though I am what people could call an "expat"... I'm not saying Spain is racist, far from that, just that it felt like some people need a lot of education on human perception, there are many African people who settle in their life legally and who actually have good job and money...
It has never felt awkward in 1 year in Lisbon, but both countries are awesome !

Take into consideration that being a native Spanish speaker will be really easy to learn Portuguese and more than that a lot of people understand Spanish as well. Maybe there will be one or another word that is really different but you will be able to work around it. So, feel free to move and you don’t need to learn Portuguese before you move to manage yourself there, you can easily learn it there. In the other hand if you just know Portuguese and go to Spain nobody will understand you maybe only in Galicia.

According to the Embassy, I have to make a reservation for an accommodation for one full year in order for my D7 Visa to be processed. I can certainly book a long-term rental for a year, but in all likelihood will only be in the unit long enough to find something else i.e., 2-3 months. Are you aware of any obligation to pay for the remainder of the year if I only stay for a few months? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Henry
