As a Portuguese I'm flatered that foreign people appreciate my country. But, I have to say that, most of these prices are not for the average Portuguese. Our minimum salary is 635€ (monthly), being the average around 970€. Tthe foreing demand of real estate in Lisbon, is making the prices going way off the average Portuguese to achieve. People are being pushed to the suburbs where the housing is cheaper. I'm not against the foreign people aquiring real estate. I guess it's good for our economy. We welcome you. But keep this in mind: If you search for a Portuguese ambience in a neighborhood, that may be in extintion. One day you will wake up in a neighborhood that is French, American, English, etc.... but certanly not Portuguese. Saying this, all I ask is that you respect us, and don't see Lisbon only as a playground.
@sevecn yai No I'm not, whatever that is... I said foreigners are welcome, and I mean it. I just wanted to point out that behind those good deals there are old people being evicted from the houses and neighborhood where they've lived all their lives. And asked also for respect. That's not being hater..
@sevecn yai "you also inadvertently pass judgment on foreigners purchasing or renting the properties". That's your conclusion. Not my opinion. I agree with you when you say, people buy or rent because the houses are on the market. No question about it. My call was: Those prices are unreachable the average local citizen. If you buy a house because you like the neighborhood ambiance, be aware... that ambiance may not exist in a near future. What makes a neighborhood are the people... And someday those people are not there... I don't wish that things remain the same. But I doubt that some of the things that happening here are a progress.... I'll give you an example: A chinese guy bought a building in Porto. He tried to evict the tenants (two, I think). There are laws that protect the tenants, which may seem strange in a pure capitalist world. The tenants didn't accept. The next thing he did was to intimidate by force. When it didn't work he put fire to the building. The result was a person killed. He was arrested, of course. This is an extreme example. It's a chinese, but could be a Portuguese. But similiar things happened. If I have to put a judgment is on this. There is demand, prices raise and the landlords want to profit. Thats OK. But there must be ethic.. I can't be against people buying houses when that market dynamic was the trigger to the rehabilitation of numerous buildings, which gave a better look to the cities. Lisbon is now much better than it was, let's say, 20 years ago. There were buildings left to fall... When those spaces gained value, they were recovered. When I ask for respect is in a way that: we have our culture. Respect that. We will respect your's. Don't try to impose your way of living. Eventually we will incorporate some of your culture, the same way other peolpe will incorporate our's. That's natural. But not imposed.. We react to that.... In the real estate business there is something I'm tottaly against. It's just MY understanding of what a city is: Buying just expecting that the value raises. Buying a house and not living on it, it's not just a waste of space. Also empties a city... What makes a city are the people (same as neighborhoods). A city with no people is sad and has no life... In the end that will kill the value of the houses... :-) I hope I could explain my point of view.
@@thatskyteamflyer hi! I travelled to Portugal in August and it was an awesome trip. Life is pretty normal there. Or was...in August at least. Other than masks in stores and on transit.
OMG your Portuguese is improving so much! Well done, guys! But you left out two major neighborhoods - (São Domingos de) Benfica and Alvalade. Both have the two major football stadiums of Lisbon and I daresay of Portugal. Both have many public and private schools. They are mostly family oriented, but because of the stadiums, you also have a bit of tourism. Both have excellent public transportation (metro, and buses to travel within the city and to go outside Lisbon and also direct routes to the airport). Both have very good private and public hospitals and a vibrant city life with plenty of amenities (cinemas/shopping centres, my favorite pastry café "Padaria Portuguesa" ;P and plenty more). The housing prices I don't think are that high as in the neighborhoods you mentioned. Also, in Campo de Ourique, despite being one of my favourite neighborhoods in Lisbon, it's a pain to find a parking space. :( That's the only downside to it. Oh, and btw, in Lapa is where Madonna was living when she was here ;) Hope this is helpful information! Wishing you all the best! I'd love to meet you in person! :D
Spent a day in Portugal as a stopover with a group of friends. We landed quite late, booked into a hotel then went out to find something to eat. A young policeman directed us to a lovely restaurant and nightclub. He later turned up at the nightclub to party with us. A great time was had by all.
I can't believe that I just realized that we never thanked you for this video. I think we even ran into you at an Expats Everywhere meetup in Jardim da Estrela last year. We walked around 800 miles last year in Lisbon alone and each time we return to our neighborhood we know we will not leave. Watching the video now I see you showed Mustarda in Jardim Constantino which has an amazing burger and fries. Muito Obrigado!!

So happy to introduce you to new neighborhoods!
Awesome video, very informative and lot of details like all your videos, thanks 👍👊
Thank you! So glad you liked it!!!
I went to St. Julians school in Caravelles as a kid..lucky me.
As a local, I wouldnt personally chose any of these but only seals the good work you both have done because it is not directed to me but for a different audience, with the advantage of not placing additional price pressure to most of us. As P. Real, C. Ourique and Lapa neighbour hills, I would swap the latter for something different just for additional choice. Great job.
What would you choose that is especially close to some beaches?
Just subscribed though I've watched your videos for quite a while. Just never hit Subscribe but, you mentioned it at the end and I remembered. You two are awesome. I love your attention to detail as I'm similarly minded. Keep it up!
Flying to Lisbon next weekend per your inspiration!!! How I wish we can just randomly run into you there!! 😍

Well done! Portugal has never come to mind as it relates to relocating from the states. Not sure if I'm interested in living there, but I will certainly consider visiting. Retired early myself and my wife retired in 2014. So congrat's to you both and thanks for opening my eye's to another vacation spot.
I love watching your informative videos and hope to meet you guys in person one day :) It would be good if you mentioned crime rates and safety in each neighborhood.

Great content and a good insight into some of Lisbon’s neighborhoods. Now I have to get on google earth and see how they are laid out geographically in relation to the city. Looking forward to visiting for a pre retirement assessment once the world starts to return to some degree of normalcy. I’m a huge fan of your videos and hope to meet you both in person one day.
Thanks Nick! Google earth is a great idea - it will give you a good layout of the neighborhoods! We're hoping everything will return to normal soon - with every safe and healthy. Stay safe!!!
Love your info! Has your list of neighborhoods in the Lisbon changed since you originally aired this video?
I cannot wait for your relocation course!!!
About Lapa, its actually part of Estrela, and it's planed to have a metro station by 2023. I'm sure this will bring value to this neighbourhood's RE.
