Fun fact about this video. They WERE NOT in the same studio when they shot this. Cory Wong and his band were at their studio in Minnesota, and Dirty Loops were in a studio in Europe. They decorated their sets to match each other and every time you see the shot of the whole band together, that's actually two separate shots that are stitched together.
That’s actually insane.
@@teckreactions I know right?! Their level of skill is absolutely mind-blowing. You really need to follow this video up with a reaction to their arrangement of Thriller. It's done on the same album they cut with Cory Wong.
@@teckreactions And the video editor is none other than Aron Mellergård! Talented dude, for sure.
cory wong and vulfpeck is a whole other rabbit hole my man
Awesome
We saw them live and have been playing for 40 years. Everyone in the crowd was a musician. All we kept saying to each other was “we’re not worthy, we’re not worthy”.
"Hit Me" was there first viral song that brought them to the masses. It is amazing. Very pop!
Sweet
Hmm, I think it was the Justin Bieber-cover "Baby".
Their version of Baby - bieber made then explode on internet man

@@teckreactionsIf you want to see a DL live video ”Hit me” from the Montreux jazz festival is of good quality. Also some little ”drum craziness” in the end 😊
Watch Grace Kelly's reaction (the blue haired saxophonist) in the upper left corner at the end of Henrik's solo!
Favorite part
Yes, that is great! 😄
Pure joy.
Cory Wong is a pure funk guy, so it’s unlikely you’ll get shredding solos from him. And although he makes his own stuff with Cory & The Wong Notes, his main claim to fame is as part of the Vulfpeck collective. Highly recommended, if you at all enjoy classic funk, soul, R&B and motown played by superb musicians.
Sweet
Okay you need to listen to a ballad: "Breakdown", "Ring of Saturn" for some Cory Wong on guitar, some of their older stuff f.ex. "Accidentally in love" and one of their cover songs which is what they started out with originally - I personally like "Wake me up"...
On it
I concur.
Also out “World on fire” somewhere near the top of your list. And don’t forget the live performance of Lady Gaga’s “just dance.” That live performance will blow you away.
Would also recommend Breakdown. It’s more focus on the singer in that one.
@@DanSpomerI soo agree, Dan 👍
This one is from the album Turbo, that was released in 2021, and there are other songs on that album where Cory gets to shine too.
Some of the reasons Aron (drums) and Henrik (bass) are so tight is 1) they had the same mentor through high school (even though Aron was a year behind Henrik) and at least Henrik kept playing for that teacher trhrough college as well, and 2) during two years of college they had this absolutely insane routin, where they would practice together for 5-6 hours, 5-6 nights a week, whereof half the time was divided into 1,5 hours of two different 4 bar grooves on repeat, that they found bothersome, and the rest of the time they practiced other stuff. Add to that all the session gigs they've done together and 16 years of Dirty Loops, and they literally have thousands of hours of playing together under their belts.
They’ve been together that long?!
@@teckreactions They started Dirty Loops in 2008, but they've been friends and played together in various projects since high school (and Henrik and Jonah since Henrik was 11 and Jonah 9). As they're in their late thirties now, that's 20+ years.
Go for their version of Thriller next time!

Just saw Dirty Loops in Toronto on Thursday night. Fabulous tight performance.
Isn’t it?
Thank you for introducing me to this Band! I love them!
No problem!!
Am I to be the first one to point out that this video was shot on two continents, Dirty Loops in Sweden and Cory Wong and the horns in the US, with similar lights, rugs and even cameras. Then Aron did the video editing to mix it all together o make it look like they’re in the same room.
Cory Wong is an amazing guitarist, seldom does solos but he’s a master at rhythm guitar playing. Probably got the fastest and loosest right hand wrist in the world. Worth checking out.
What? No way.
@@teckreactions When Cory Wong looks like he's smiling at Henrik or Dirty Loops, he actually had his girlfriend 'in the wings' of the Minneapolis studio, and he's smiling at her. It works really well. He looks very happy.
Best Wishes. ☮
@@gbulmer @teckreactions The other way around. It was Dirty Loops who had Aron's girlfriend posing as Cory, so they'd know where to look. Maybe Cory's side had someone too, but Cory would have said his wife in that case, since he's married.
@@lottawiklund8606 Thank you very much for replying. Thank you even more for the correction. I apologise to Cory Wong's wife. I was repeating misinformation.
Cory looked so happy, and his looks were so convincing, I was willing to believe the explanation, but didn't know he was married.
Thank you again.

@@gbulmer It’s easy to get stuff mixed up. I do it all the time. 😅 No worries! And to get rid of my mix-ups I decided to just discard anything that’s not been said by a direct source that has been actually involved in the work in some way, in an interview or podcast or some such. ☺️
And, this is what happens when someone who subscribed for your Nightwish reactions starts listening to your other videos. I never heard of this and before and was so surprised when I researched and found out they were from Sweden (land of heavy metal). This was really a fun listen, and I do enjoy the fact that I am listening to a musician who know of what he speaks.
Glad you enjoyed!
The bass player was interviewed not too long ago and he mentioned that Aaron writes out some of those bass parts that are so well scripted and played by both.
Crazy.
Need more DL?! 😉
Yes, to one of the worthiest reactors out there ;), there luckily is more and plenty of it.
Just do us the favour and don’t DL-binge on your own, share them with us, because man, your reactions and dissections of Dirty Loops (and friends) are priceless!
Yeah, this one is a banger, a mix of technical and musical brilliance, and I’m glad you’re getting to see the many other sides of Dirty Loops.
This album, Turbo, came about during the COVID years, when rhythm guitarist Cory Wong contacted DLoops and said: “ Hey, I like your stuff, do you guys want to do a song together? A cover of Thriller maybe?” Jonah said ok, and Mr Wong said, heck, let’s do a whole album together. Ok, said the Loops.
Thing was, Cory and his horns were stuck in the US, the Loops in Sweden. No travel, no chance of getting together.
So they wrote, arranged, recorded AND filmed the whole thing on two separate continents. The Loops in Stockholm, Cory in Minneapolis. Even Aron, Henrik and Jonah could t really get together, so they did a lot in three different locations, writing lines, arranging, via FaceTime etc.
There are two interviews, one with Jonah on Stratele Studio’s YT channel, one with Henrik on Cory Wong’s podcasts, explaining more about that venture.
Afterwards Aron, drums, stitched the visuals of the two separate videos together, as he does all of DL’s visual editing.
Some of the songs on this album are more Cory-led, some more Loops-led.
It’s 100% worth checking them all out, they’re all on an insane level.
Only four of them have a video attached, though,: “Follow…”, Thriller”, “Turbo” and “Ring of Saturn”.
Cory Wong is a really brilliant musician in his own right. Lots of podcasts, collaborations and appearances. He’s toured in Europe recently, and those live concerts blew my mind. Some members of his happy band of horns are part of the original Hornheads, who recorded and toured with Prince and other greats. They get to shine more in various of their other tracks on this collab.
This is getting way too long, it’s ridiculous how your reactions get me fired up.
But have you noticed the Baywatch theme at the beginning, right before they rip our heads off with those drum hits? ☺️ no wonder Pamela Anderson had her fingers somewhere in there ;)
And next thing on your list absolutely HAS to be their joint cover of “Thriller”.
This was too good, Matt, thanks a bunch 🙏
Wow. Thanks for the kind words!
Wong doesn't do the wank solo thing. He's like a member of the horn section. Chords and funky stabs. He absolutely knows what he's doing, and somehow his ego doesn't need solos. That little diggity-do diggity-do diggity -do 4-part harmony is the most out in front I've ever heard him.
I love it.
@@teckreactions Actually... he legit plays the tastiest lead I've ever heard in Ring of Saturn. He _sings_ through his guitar. It's beautiful!
Cory Wong is awesome too!!!
I bet.
I saw Cory live a few months ago. One of the best concerts of my life. He’s a super tight and funky rhythm guitarist, and an amazing band leader. Well worth checking out! He has a lot of live recordings on TH-cam with high quality. Would also recommend his project The Fearless Flyers and the song “Assassin”. That one will blow your mind.
Man, you would absolutely dig "World on Fire"

Lot of guys saying you need to check out Cory Wong with Vulfpeck, and I 100% agree-
But as a drummer, you *really* need to do yourself a favor and watch him play with The Fearless Flyers, with Nate Smith on drums. Absolutely sick.
2nd time listening to Dirty Loops and I'm getting more and more intrigued, all due to your channel! Enjoyed the technical observations and enthusiasm, thanks 😀
Welcome aboard!
It just gets better my friend. I've been following them since day one.
Sweet!
Ring of saturn.. is cory wongs time to shine, fun part is that they did not record it in the same place..
Yeah, that song has a dope drum groove in it as well. And it's really cool that they did a whole album without even having seen each other in person, due to Dirty Loops being in Stockholm and the rest in Minneapolis during the covid lockdown.
Sweet
Yes, that song is beautiful I think!
Love love love Dirty Loops, keep up reacting to their music. Its nice to see one who actually reacts and talks about the music. ❤
And - besides Dirty, would love for you to react to Polyphia with Ego Death 😊
I love Polyphia
Cory Wong and the Wongnotes are amazing too. You’d enjoy Petar (their drummer)

Thanks for your reaction! 🙂
Next to you came before Follow the light so maybe that’s why no effect there. (Look at Grace Kellys face/reaction to it at 7.15 😄 )
I think the brass is great! They are that in Thriller too. Parts in that arrangement will surprise you I think 😊
For more DL maybe also see their early work, covering pop songs, where it kind of all began. You’ll see their take on them with the jazz/funk/fusion-like arrangements. I would suggest Baby (great bass solo), Rolling in the deep, Circus, Wake me up.
Thanks!
I recommend 'BITTEN BY THE KITTEN' - though it features just Henrick and Aron. It's a great example of how those two can really lock down a groove together.

@@teckreactionsIt’s a great suggestion! I would add the other songs as well from the same project - Songs for lovers 🙂
The IIIhaa is the trumpet that makes, you can see him doing it the second time. Other fine details that you perhaps missed is the intro.
Baywatch? And of course Henriks triplets after the first line in the chorus. Once you hear it you cant unhear it

This is *such* a great song tho. Nice to see the bass work (before the crazy solo) getting praise.... but then again, I should have expected that from you- I reckon nobody appreciates a great bass player more than a drummer, amIright?! :)
Very much looking forward to your facial expressions when you get to DL & Cory's re-working of "Thriller". ;)
Rock on!
Henrik and Aron play together _all the time._ They're like musical brothers. They have a side project they do together called Songs for Lovers. (It has nothing to do with love songs). Also a fun little mini-rabbit-hole. xD Probably start with "Coffee Break is Over"
Apparently, Cory has no problem with just playing the rhythm guitar. But a tasty little guitar solo would definitely be nice. But rhythm guitar is his thing. I mean that´s what he does the most I think. There are other songs with DL and Cory, where the sax player plays solos. In Turbo he has a great solo on sax and in Ring Of Saturn he has a flute solo. Both are instrumentals and definitely worth checking out. And their cover of MJ´s Thriller is also amazing.
On it
Wong and his crew are amazing.. worth a dive. They have a lot of full length live shows on youtube. If you are looking for show-offy stuff you might not find it with him but its all really tight and locked in music.
The next dirty loops to check out is their early early covers that got them noticed. The black and white estetic cover stuff of the mid 2010s.. rolling in the deep/forever young/wake me up... then check out their first album.
Check out scary pockets too. They have a huge discography of covers... Haha just keep going with the channel. Its fun to watch!
Super good reaction; it is so nice that you explain things most of us most likely don't know or haven't noticed (certainly including me)!
I believe Cory Wong is a "rhythm guitarist", not really going crazy, but really good at what he does, a perfectionist. Check out Ring of Saturn (also from the collar album Turbo) to hear him playing a bit more, and you will sort of float in space near the ring. With Ring of Saturn you get yet "another Dirty Loops", although they are always true to themselves. To be honest, the composition is more a Cory Wong creation than a Dirty Loops one, but it is still a solid collaboration. It is smooooth (maybe there should be even more o's in there).
Sweet
The horn section are part of Cory Wong's Wongnotes (not Wongtones). Three were Prince's studio and touring horn section the 'Hornheads', including arranger Micharl B Nelson.

Check out ”Turbo” over on Cory Wongs channel for more colab with Dirty Loops and there you’ll hear Cory shine a little more on that rhythmic guitar. They did a whole album together with the same title, basically writing it over Skype during Pandemic times. So they have never met each other irl. Crazy! Vulfpeck is great. They have a song named Cory Wong. Cory is one of the greatest funk guitar players.

Follow the Light is not really one of the older ones. It came out after Work Shit Out and Next to You. I think next you should really pick some of their older stuff, like "Hit me" or "The Way She Walks" are some of their older originals. But they started out covering pop hints in a jazzed-up funky style. So maybe check out the covers, too, e.g. "Rolling in the Deep", "Circus", or "Wake me Up".
The list is quickly growing.
Also worth noting... this whole album was recorded on two different continents.
Highly suggest Sleep Token’s The Summoning play through on Drumeo. The drummer, ii, won drummer of the year and a number of other awards on their platform. If you haven’t heard him yet, your mind will be blown.
I’ve seen it. Mind WAS blown.
It's "WongNOTES", not "WongTONES"! Also, this video was recorded it two separate sessions. Cory Wong and his band were not recorded at the same time as Dirty Loops, who (I believe) was on tour at the time.

Yeah, that high note on "grab HOLD, get some con-TROL" is not a midi trigger. Jonah has those notes.
Ehhhh. He clearly triggers it on his keyboard. I don't doubt he has the notes, but they sound too compressed to be natural.
@@teckreactionsCompression is a standard post-production technique. But when you say it was triggered, it sounds like you’re suggesting that he sampled a lower note and then played the higher one with a trigger. While they may use production to line everything up, there is no reason to think that any vocal note on their songs doesn’t actually come out of his mouth.
@@thisguyny8379 That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm simply saying those two specific notes were triggered. His pinky hits the high note on the keyboard and the quick slide into it is pretty obvious. Doesn't mean it's cheating or anything. Just a cool effect. I'm aware of his vocal ability.
I'm also happy to be wrong.
I get the feeling that youre the type of musician that really nerds out over the therory/technical side of things. You should really check out some Animals as Leaders playthrough stuff. I'd start with the drum playthrough for Monomyth and go from there.
