Nice fan game, need to try it. Castlevania The Lecard Chronicles 2 as well is probably one of the best castlevanias games ever made, and its a fan creation as well. Music, story, overall metroidvania design etc. Its a golden age of fan made stuff for classic games.
3:39 "I can see this actually pissing off Castlevania fans" Hi, Castlevania fan here, these new additions are awesome, air control especially makes the biggest difference.
He said it because of the long going beef between retro and Metroid style Castlevania but I think now that we've had so long without any Castlevania most of the fans are just happy with every game
Castlevania 1 and Castlevania SotN are my favorite ones, and they each have their own distinctive style. I thought this was going to be a bit more of a Castlevania 1 remake with some QOL things like better graphics and that air control and such, but it's a lot more than that. I was put off at first, but it seems cool enough. Just way different from what I was expecting lol.
Agreed. There was air control in Castlevania Rebirth (a remake of a Castlevania Gameboy game), and you could turn this off in the game's settings. Can confirm, it makes a big difference.
its not that people would think this game is bad, it just wouldve been more favourable to improve on the original with better level design and more content, not change the core gameplay. for example, a game with no air control always has the same jump distance, and theres alot a level designer can do with that. this fangame is literally just shantae with a simon belmont skin. fun, but could have been more unique.
They weren't "objectively" bad. The stairs functioned the same as walking forward and could even be jumped on. The 'problem' with stairs was falling off of them when you got hit, but that's a skill issue. The jump is literally just a realistic jump. CV1, 2, 3, and 4-to a degree-required you to be deliberate with your attacks and movement. They functioned in the same way how souls requires you to watch your stamina and not just swing or roll with wild, reckless abandon. They punished carelessness. Neither was broken in any way, has impeded speed runners and top-tier players as 'bad mechanics', nor is there an inherent flaw with either mechanic putting limitations on control. All games put arbitrary limits on your controls. In short... Git gud
@@JakeA6956 This. It's something i see a lot of newbies say over and over without stopping to think for five seconds on how EVERY game has arbitrary restrictions to what you can or cannot do. This is only an issue if the level design does not account for your lack of mobility, in which case, the vast majority of time, it does. However, I'm not gonna sit her and pretend some of the earlier titles didn't abuse this fact to make super cheap shots and for you to take a hit while jumping or just putting an enemy super high up where you cant reach and throws objects at you to make you fall while jumping. You start to see those kind of tactics less and less as the series goes on, since they're more of a product of it's time than anything.

Just play Chronicles if you want the (kind of) best way to play Castlevania 1. It can still be ball bustingly hard at certain points but it's still really, really good
One of my favourite things about Castlevania HD was that retro characters like Simon and Getsu Fuma got access to all the movement more modern Metroidvania characters had. With their shorter hitbox they were actually really fun for specific stages too. This is a really cool concept that takes that a bit further.
Honestly I really like this, I think it's a really good way of replaying Castlevania 1 with tons of additions, I don't care if some fans will get pissy about this, I mean that's just the Castlevania fandom in general

I definitely understand the whole "the blur of the CRT makes the artwork smoother" thing, but to me personally, that is not as appealing. I still prefer seeing all the pixels clearly and sharply and like how it looks better that way. But to each his own, of course.
It's not that it makes it smoother, it's that in a lot of cases, they're designed to blend together. Dithering created new shades and colors, sprite work became seemingly more detailed... I'd send some examples, but TH-cam doesn't allow links in comments
@@DarkLink1996. I saw the examples that Vinny showed, and I have seen other examples too. I am just simply saying that I still personally prefer seeing the pixels clearly and I still like how that looks better.

It's pretty small so it can be hard to see things sometimes (especially since nothing is designed with CRTs in mind anymore, obviously), but it fits well next to my main monitor and I'm too cheap to buy an actual second monitor. But yeah, you can get HDMI to AV converters very easily online, and it's usually pretty good for emulating older games on PC.
Seems interesting in its own right I guess. Though I'd rather have an actual just more polished version of the original, it's not like that's what was ever what was atempted here in the first place. I just wish there were more classicvania-inspired stuff nowadays, since metroidvanias are essentially the "first person shooter" of indies of current times (that and rougelikes, that is).
Curse of Darkness was my first Castlevania game. There's fond memories there for me, but I have no desire to play it again because of how much of a grind that game is. If there were a way to half every enemy and boss' health, I'd probably play it again. Otherwise, prepare to wear out the square button.
@@CassiusStelar It's still an obscene amount of mashing versus every other Castlevania, even with the best items you can craft per area explored. Sure, going back to areas is easier, but you also usually have enough health and armor boosts on the way back that you don't even need to attack, unless you're farming those damn weapon crystals. It was just poor conversion to 3d. Instead of figuring out the stage and the attack patterns, they made it more about strike and dodge mechanics with increased enemy health and combos, but with enemy population comparable to other Castlevania games. Just makes it a slog to play. And I fully completed the game. Sometimes I think to go back to it, which lasts a little bit past the shop area before I realize how bored I am. Modifying enemy health would probably fix that outright.
I like castlevania 64 idk. I don't really remember having problems with platforming, and i thought the game was very easy but in a good way. The story was pretty neat. The legacy of darkness or whatever the DLC/sidequel was called, had werewolf guy and i remember really liking the puzzles there
This has me interested, I beat Castlevania NES this year for the first time, man it was so difficult but worth it. I personally really love fan remakes. AM2R and Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit both being so good, and so Castlevania Revamped can sit among those
On the subject of blurry pixel games, the funny thing is that probably a clear majority of games made for low-resolution platforms over the years probably did have pretty crisp pixels. Either because they were made for DOS PCs whose monitors were high enough DPI to target twice that resolution (or other types of computers that could use either a monitor or a TV, and probably had a pretty even ratio among their owner base and _definitely_ the developers were using monitors), or because they were made for handhelds with the same sharp LCDs we use today but with bigger squares. I kind of want to see some side-by-side comparisons like those where they get games that weren't made for TVs playing on one. I'm curious if it improves them too.
Analog is fun! I do some visuals once in a while and I run them onto VHS and back to digital format. There's plenty of plugins available, I know, but the results are still a bit too high fidelity. PLUS, I can smack my VCR during digitizing footage to create temporary distortion, which is pretty cool too :) And also, I just love god awful interlacing that plugins that I've tried just simply don't provide.
tbh, the first thing i would want to change in Castlevania is how the sub weapons work. I really dislike how easy it is to just accidentally pickup a sub weapon you don't want and lose the one you had. it should either require a button press to pick them up or the player should just be able to keep all of them and switch between them.
@@crystalalumina it doesn't help much since you still automatically drop your previous sub-weapon when you touch a new one and there is not always much space to avoid touching the drops, your previous sub-weapon could potentially drop down a pit and become unreachable anyway.
@@elio7610 I've never had those problems with the way it works already and I've played these games a lot, the only issue I've ever had is not finding the sub weapon I want at the moment, but since games like Aria of Sorrow have replaced the system with the soul system, it's even less of an issue
Just beat this game and I liked it. The dev team could make a real original troidvania style game that isn't heavily borrowed if they wanted to. They seem very capable of making something like shovel knight or hollow knight if given a chance. This game seems a bit like an overly difficult long demo. It's not super long, nor super short. A lot of the movement options are just too convenient and you'll find yourself flying or sliding across the screen every screen once you get them because there's no downside to using them. There's no combination to starting or re-using. There's no mana or heart cost. You can just use them whenever you feel like. IMO I think the game would have been a bit better served if the movement options and level geometry were a bit re-tuned such that hearts were used when you used the movement mechanics and you needed to do some kind of basic controller combination to activate them other than just pressing a button and a direction.
@@hayato1886 i like Harmony in concept because its story is so unique compared to other CV games and the movement is very MegaMan-esque, but I just can't stand how much forced warping there is and the lack of actual upgrades in favor of shoehorning in *furniture collecting*
There’s some fun changes here (air control for example) but a lot of this just feels like shoving modern game design ideas into an old thing that doesn’t need them, diluting the actual fun of the original thing. Not to say you *shouldn’t* do experiments like this, but yeah I can’t imagine playing this much beyond a quick curiosity peek.
This is another game that I don't mind watching some poor sap torture themselves on, but I have no plans to play this in the foreseeable future. Difficulty does not always equal fun, kids.
Nothing looks better on CRT. Scan-lines are an inherent downgrade to the quality of any image, pixel or not. Like the Dracula comparison image is so clearly doctored, it's not even the same frame of animation.

I like castlevania 64 idk. I don't really remember having problems with platforming, and i thought the game was very easy but in a good way. The story was pretty neat. The legacy of darkness or whatever the DLC/sidequel was called, had werewolf guy and i remember really liking the puzzles there
People mostly hate it because James and Mike suck at games and they didn't understand how to play it.
That game is overhated, people just kept repeating what their favorite game youtuber said rather than actually try the game
This has me interested, I beat Castlevania NES this year for the first time, man it was so difficult but worth it.
I personally really love fan remakes. AM2R and Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit both being so good, and so Castlevania Revamped can sit among those
Vinny....
PLUS, I can smack my VCR during digitizing footage to create temporary distortion, which is pretty cool too :)
And also, I just love god awful interlacing that plugins that I've tried just simply don't provide.
will never understand why somebody would want no air control
Castlevania and Mega Man are way too underrated
tbh, the first thing i would want to change in Castlevania is how the sub weapons work. I really dislike how easy it is to just accidentally pickup a sub weapon you don't want and lose the one you had. it should either require a button press to pick them up or the player should just be able to keep all of them and switch between them.
They already solved that since Rondo of Blood, when you pick one the other one drops, so you can pick it back if you want
That title is hilarious... ReVamped? This world is incredible. الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر سبحان
the graphics are too bright and hurt my eye balls
I'm a purist, but this looks kinda cool, like an alternate version.
Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance kinda sucky
Also favorite Non-Belmonts are Soma and Johnathan
I like Circle of the Moon but Harmony? I've never even gotten more than an hour into it because I just get bored
I agree. To me this is taking a classic, unique style of platformer and making it uninteresting by copying these overdone metroid style rpg games.
The original castlevania games aren't fun they're slow, clunky, outdated mechanics and overtuned in "difficulty" to drag out playtime
@@cal5365please try to use less made up terms next time to explain you don't understand game design
@@Relzion retro castlevania is dead sorry old man
@@cal5365 Skill issue
This is another game that I don't mind watching some poor sap torture themselves on, but I have no plans to play this in the foreseeable future. Difficulty does not always equal fun, kids.
trying to justify insults by saying it's sarcasm.
1:21:20 you mean yourself? that's just you doing that
Some chat members get easily offended by the dumbest stuff
Nothing looks better on CRT. Scan-lines are an inherent downgrade to the quality of any image, pixel or not. Like the Dracula comparison image is so clearly doctored, it's not even the same frame of animation.
Such an ugly, pointless remake.
it literally looks the exact same as the nes version but better how can you call it ugly?
@@Paccyd33 It looks NOTHING like the NES original.
I've outgrown Vinny. I just can't handle him spouting off brainrot catchphrases and still making dirty jokes about the Teletubbies. Oh well, at least this game looks aces.
this game rules, i hope the stream didnt end early because vinny bummed himself out at the end talking about producing blowup dolls of himself after he dies
looks like good game
