it never feels right. the pain never goes away. forgotten for awhile but never leaves. i wouldn't have it any other way. forever my precious little puppy. ❤️
My dog died a few years ago while in someone else's care. We were on a family vacation and couldn't take her with us. It took me almost an entire week before I could even accept that she was really gone. I kept expecting her to come running out of the woods. Anyway, thanks for sharing something so personal...it makes your videos more real.
I've been binge watching your hike the last few days. This is so sad. I'm sorry for your loss. You were really strong to keep pushing forward on the trail even with everything that was happening
I'm just watching your videos 5 years now after your hike. Had to comment on this one - I'm an animal lover and have had to say good bye to some of my own special canine family members. Have another one sleeping at my feet right now as I type. I know how hard that is and that you still miss her today 5 years later. Love that you kept her collar with you for the rest of your hike.
My sincerest condolences on the loss of your Sugar Belle. family pets are family, especially those raised in your formative years. She will forever live in your heart.
I know that this is 2 years ago, but I am so sorry to hear about your beloved Sugar! :( The pain you feel (and felt) is nothing more than a reflection of the power of your dog's love. Your videos are an inspiration. thanks Dixie!
So sorry for your loss. I just lost my dachshund after 13 years. It is like losing a family member. I feel your pain. I follow you on Instagram as well as you tube. you are so inspiring. Good luck on the trail. Will pray for you and your safe travels.
So, so sorry for your loss. I know it's probably been more than a year by the time I write this, but it probably hurts still the same. I'm sure she couldn't have picked a better Mom/Guardian and gave her the best life she could have possibly had. RIP Sugar Belle.
Jessica, just watched this ... so sorry for your loss ... my dog passed while I was away from home too ... she was definitely a beautiful dog. Thanks for doing the AT, maybe just maybe someday I can (after my 7 kids grow up ... ages 1 - 12) ... I'll live vicariously thru your experience last year :)
I went through this fairly recently too. My dog's ashes are scattered along side my mother's. It comforts me to think they might be together. Pets are family. Rest easy Sugar Belle. Maybe we'll meet on the other side of the veil and I'll tell you how inspiring your doggie mom was to me and the rest of her fans.
Heartfelt condolences for your loss and sorrow - Seen it a few times myself, and its not easy or easy forgotten. She is in a better place, without pain, and running free. As long as you have warm memories, she will live within you. It is how my family copes with our lost 4-footed children.
From one dog lover to another, I admire your dedication to your furbaby and to the AT. I am not a "thru-hiker" but I have been on one section of the AT. But I have been through the loss of a dog and I feel your pain.
I cried my eyes out while reading your post on your blog and I'm crying just as much watching you tell the story. My heart goes out to you and remember, all dogs do go to heaven. Sweet Sugar Belle
I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm just going through your videos and love all of them. It's tough losing a pet because they are so much like family. I look forward to your many more hours of your hike!
So sorry for your loss. I lost my hiking buddy Gimpy,my Australian Shepherd several years ago on Good Friday. He was almost 14 years old. I miss him terribly bad to this day. I don't think I will ever own a dog again. Some things are irreplaceable. My condolences for your loss.
Thank you, Doug! It was pretty awful the way it went down. Losing a pet is always horrible, but I just try to remember the good times. I bet Gimpy had a wonderful life with you :)
My dog passed the beginning of fall 2016, my dad is sick so they did not want another dog because of his own health, a few months later they couldn't do it anymore and they broke down and got a rescue pup! Dogs are family 110%
Great video it was interesting when you spoke of the differences between water, and smells after being on the trail and remembering how to drive was funny. Thanks for sharing those thoughts that most of us probably take for grant or never even give a second thought to.
Just ran across your documentary and have been doing a marathon watching session. Sorry to hear about your pup. From one dog lover to another I know your pain all to well. Lost my 16 yr old Jack Russell, best friend and hiking buddy Petey a few years back. Hearing about Sugar Belle brought back some strong emotions. It's taken 3 new best buddy hiking friends to replace him and the pain from his loss. I'm enjoying watching your trip. Good luck to you!
I know this is a little late, and you're currently on the PCT, but I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my father, my 16 year old cattle dog, and my 10 year old pet squirrel all in past year. I plan on doing a thru hike on the AT next year, and have been watching yours and other channels for inspiration.
We lost our oldest dog in January and it was terrible. We were lucky enough to be with him at the end, but it was the worst experience I have ever endured. Watching you there brought back all the emotions we felt and I am truly sorry for your loss - even though it was a couple of years ago now, I'm sure you still think of her every day. Take care ❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss. I just lost my kitty I got when I got my trailer in soph. year of college 2005. She died 11/13/16, so she lived 11 years too. I cannot imagine how hard that must have been for you to be so far away and trying to make it. I cried watching this.
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT CITY WATER IS TERRIBLE AND THE CLEAN WATER CLEANS YOUR SYSTEMS OUT AND IMPROVES YOUR TASTE AND SMALL AND PEACE OF MIND HOPE YOUR THAT'S SO SAD ABOUT YOUR PUP HOPE YOU FEAL BETTER SOON
I don't know how I came across your channel but I have been BINGE WATCHING it & I came upon this one.. I know I'm months late but this was truly sad & I'm sincerely Sorry for your Loss!!! I'm going to be turning 50 in another year and I'm thinking this is what I'm going to do for the year I turn 50!!! I take it I'm not too old to try The AT & I guess it's only too late when you die!!! I have a year to plan and get in shape.. thanks for the vlogging it's truly inspirational and beautiful scenery! Good luck in your adventures and God bless!!
Sorry about your dog, Sugar -- It was good of you to head home for her. I'm glad you'll be dedicating the rest of your hike to her. I bet it WAS weird passing all the milestones from the AT on I-81...probably felt impressive and insignificant at the same time haha. Looking forward to your next video. ~Ridgewalker
Though this comment comes awhile after your experience, my heart hurts for you. We lost our Sunny the Wonderdog on August 9 last year...and it still causes me to weep. Your courage to continue in spite of this overwhelming loss was great. Heart & hugs.
I live in Shippensburg,PA. I'm from waynesboro,PA it's around mont alto & blue ridge summit the AT runs along there I think, it's inspiring I may do it I need some change in my life!
You already heard this from me a month ago when it happened but I'm very sorry for your loss. I know that pain all too well. I donated towards the final expenses. Wish it could have been more. if we all give a little I know it will help a lot.
I'm so sorry for your loss... I just got to this... I've been following you but just saw the video. I know the feeling all to well. Sometimes its worst than loosing a person... I'm thinking of you. :(
I feel for the things that you r going thru, I have a 16 yr old dog that is on his last legs. My father is 84plus and he is not dooing well. I stopped in April because I want to be with him for the last bit. I hope that you get back on trail soon.
I'm sure all your viewers share your sense of loss. I sure do. Ease your sorrow remembering all the good times with Sugar. Walking is good for sorrow too.
It didn't feel appropriate to like this video but I know Sugar is proud of what you've accomplished and that you persevered through the grievance. I'm sure that her story brought you closer to some hikers along the second half.
I just saw your video on losing your beautiful girl Sugar. So sorry. Glad you got back on the trail. Best of luck out there, hope see you on the trail some day...
I was hard clicking on the like button on this video with Dixie losing Sugar Belle. My heart went out to Dixie. I know losing a pet in the family is like losing a family member. God Bless
It is so hard when you lose a pet - 6 of our cats and dogs have come and gone over the years and it truly is losing a family member. I know your Sugar is in a beautiful place now - God Bless.
Oh man, this was rough! I've got a 9 year old dog, and I know I'm going to be devastated when she dies. I know it's been a while since she's passed, but I know you'll remember her forever.
Sorry to hear about Sugar Belle. I'm sure her memory will never be replaced. I do believe that when a member of our lives goes home to God, their spirit never really leave us but rather, they surround us with an energy that we can tap into when we feel lost, alone, hopeless or scared. Also, by the time I post this, I'm sure I'll be months behind on your update but regardless, have a safe trip and looking forward to your next update. Btw., an episode I never shared with anyone regarding my childhood because of the sacred memory; I had a dog named Princess when I lived in Lancaster, South Carolina and she was my only refuge and friend at home. Hi Dixie. I have been watching your videos and very much enjoying them. I know your Sugar Belle died quite awhile ago but just wanted to say I'm sorry she didn't make it and I feel and know what that's like, and it hurts. Thank you for your vids and am looking forward to finishing with you.
I know that I'm really late with this, but I actually just found your videos today, haha. Anyway, I hate to hear about your dog. I'm planning my thru hike sitting here with mine when I found your videos. Some people have a hard time understanding a dog as part of the family, or any pet for that matter. But I know the feeling all too well and I hope it's an easy transition for you. If it means anything, your videos have really helped me with figuring a few things out about the trail and how to hike the entire thing. So thanks for that.
+segamusic92 Awesome! Glad the videos have been helpful. I'm working on an e-book right now..just a basic 'how to' guide. Sigh, yes dog children imprint a rather ugly scar on the hearts of their owners when they leave us. But, I wouldn't trade the good times and love for anything. Pat that doggy on the head :) Thanks for your kind words!
I would like to say perhaps your senses become normal. In the city it is abnormal. I lived in a log cabin for many years and I feel the same way nothing like spring water
I don't get the challenge with slack packing from the critics. The way I figure, you are still hiking the trail and if you do it with a 40lb pack or a 10lb pack what difference would it make? Would they still consider it cheating if you stay in shelters or at a hostel? Where would the critics stop? Hike your own hike and just enjoy the trail. :)

I would take her with me but she is just a little terrier datschund mix her little legs couldn't cover that distance every day.
Dear God, she has my eyes watering again. I simply do not do very well with emotions, especially like this. I wish I knew when this was going on. I would have helped. So sorry.

My dog died when I was away in the Marine Corps. That was over 25 years ago and I still think of him to this day. I'll always miss my buddy.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice to our country.
Still think of my Golden Retriever who died in 2009
5 years after this was filmed and I'm sittin here getting teary eyed over the loss of your pups.

Just came across this emotional post so it's old news but nevertheless, it was a moving story. Saw a bumper sticker once "Don't make me chose between my friends and my dog" I believe dogs are God's gift to us. I have a special needs son who could not walk or talk ( Doctors and professionals had no answers). A Clydesdale came along and unlocked that mystery... animals have the ability to reach the soul.
